To All Employees,

Time to start it all over again this year. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. While winter has been pretty mild so far, I’m sure we’ll get our fair share of cold and snow before the end of March.

I believe we are in great position to have a terrific 2016. Our engine backlog is solid and we have several great opportunities pending this year too. We have restructured our earthmoving sales division to raise our game in their territory with better coverage, process, support, and leadership. It has been a rough ride the past few months, but I know we are set up for success going forward with Rob Miller taking over as General Sales Manager this year.

We have a lot going on at the branches this year – from opening a new branch in Manassas to reopening our branch in Annapolis Junction. We also have improvement projects going on at Chesapeake Rebuild and potentially in Myersville.

I thank all of you for everything you did in 2015 to help us be successful, and am looking forward to another strong year in 2016, as we should be relatively unaffected by the down markets in oil and gas, and in the mining sector. All the best,

GettinG Back to our roots continued Here are five tips to communicate more effectively in both your professional and personal life:

1. Have a face to face conversation: In our technology oriented world, it becomes so easy to send an email or a quick text message. When you do that, you run the risk that your words will be misinterpreted and the receiver (the person you are trying to communicate with) may misunderstand the tone of your message, and the true meaning of your message. Body language is a key component in the receiver determining the true meaning of what you’re trying to communicate so when possible, have a face to face conversation, or even pick up the phone so that everyone involved may have an open conversation without the hindrances that come along with the technology we use.

2. Become an engaged listener: Communication is not just about you trying to get your own message across, you will become the “receiver” as your peers try to communicate with you. Focus fully on your peer, and not just on the words that they say, their body language, tone of voice, and other non-verbal clues will help you determine the true meaning behind their message. Also, make sure that you provide feedback so that your peer knows that you understand their message correctly and ask questions if you do not understand. Always remember, the “stupid” question is the one that you don’t ask.

3. Be clear and concise: Take the time to organize your thoughts. You will be more effective in relaying your message if your peers do not have to jump through hoops to find the meaning of what you are saying. Be sure to make the most important point at the be-ginning of your conversation.

4. Put away your distractions: When having a conversation and communicating, or even when you are the “receiver”, put your phone down and limit your other distractions. Respect your peer and give them your full attention. Constantly looking at your phone or checking your email when communicating is a sure way for your message to be lost somewhere along the line.

5. Watch your body language: Make eye contact with the person that you are speaking with. Our body language plays a large role in determining the true meaning of a message. It is not effective communication to tell your peer that you are open to a discussion but you keep your arms crossed. Make sure that you are self-reflective, and are able to recognize when your body language is saying something different than your words.

Everyone can improve their communication skills, we just need to get back to our roots and make the effort to do so.

The new location of our Manassas earth moving branch at 9280 Hornbaker Road, officially opened on November 23, 2015. The branch will house the parts location formerly located on Frosty Court as well as a full rental branch and sales operations. Branch Manager Tim Lambert will oversee the facility, with Kevin Ashby and John Buckley as the parts counter personnel. Northern Virginia Rents and Sales Manager, Austin Manuel, with sales reps, Ed Hullett Jr. and Mike Bloebaum work will work from the new office, as well as Rental Coordinator Jenna Hunt, Rental Rep Philip Clifton and Rental Administrator Chris Gatti. Product support reps Ike Ralls, Tom Estep, Bill McMahan and Jason Jenkins all call this new location their home as well. Customers were invited out to the new Manassas location on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, as Alban hosted a Year End Depreciation and Cost of Ownership Seminar, with a Machine Sale Showcase. Customers who RSVP’d and attended the seminar were handed a $50 amazon gift card on the spot! 29 customers attended the seminar which began on the topic of Year End Depreciation led by Chris Atwell, Director, RSM Fixed Asset Management Services. RSM is a certified public accounting firm that Alban does business with as well. Chris discussed the tax benefits of year end depreciation as well as how to maximize tax savings. The next presentation was Cost of Ownership by Austin Manuel (Northern VA Rents and Sales Manager). Austin went through the life cycle of equipment ownership and highlighted ownership costs beyond initial sale pricing and their effect on total life cycle costs and return on investment. After the presentations, customers were treated to a catered lunch by the local Red, Hot and Blue (Memphis style barbeque). Shortly after lunch, custom-ers browsed the yard with over 20 pieces of equipment on display, primarily from our Year End Inventory Reduction Sale. Machines were priced to sell and sales reps worked the yard to answer all questions and offer their expertise to the customers. A very special thanks to Jamie Alban, Tim Lambert, Austin Manuel, Jim Sweeney, Brent Poulton, Ryan John, Donna Shopulski, Amanda Everett, Caitlyn Bradsher, Julie Young, Kevin Ashby, John Buckley, Ed Hullett Sr, John Alexander, Ed Hullett Jr, Mike Bloebaum, Chris Gatti, Philip Clifton, Tom Estep, Bill McMahan, Jason Jenkins, Ike Ralls, Jeff Bowen, Jerry Hoehn, and Tim Myerholtz for your help and support! CoNtINuous ImproVEmENtTeam Alban CAT,

many employees that have been through the new Employee Cultural Orientation program since last spring realize the significance of People, Quality, Velocity and Cost – P-Q-V-C, our “metrics board mantra.”

in our quest to become better than we are today, our trailblazing team, The Awesome Problem solvers, has handed in their annual report on the use of their metrics board tool to enhance Alban business. The Awesome Problem solvers have been utilizing their metrics board and have a great story to share.

As it relates to People, The Awesome Problem solvers’ team goal was to engage their members to a level worthy of a high performing team. Their metrics board has helped them track their participation levels for daily huddles, Quarterly Employee Check-ins, monthly staff meetings and of course their Team safety Engagement.

When all team members actively participate in review of their relevant metrics, perform root Cause Analyses together, rotate the delivery of the safety meeting responsibilities among themselves and deploy successful solutions – that is a high performing Team!

Under Quality, one of their metrics was to improve upon the Customer information Accuracy in their documentation, which was hovering around 72% when they began tracking last spring. by creating and working a customer audit tracking tool through their metrics board, they have improved this metric to 94% at the end of 2015.

OK, everyone do the math – a +22% variance from beginning to end of year translates into a 30.5% improvement people. That’s transforma-tional improvement, team Alban!

for a Velocity metric, their average was running 4 days to process a Credit Application; their goal was to reliably hit 3 days on average. After performing some root Cause Analysis, then putting into action solutions they developed as a team, the end of 2015 saw their average improve to 2 days.

Again with the math, this time a little easier – going from 4 days to 2 days is a 50% improve-ment from where they were.

lastly, they had several Cost metrics they had identified and wanted to improve. One metric, encourage the use of electronic statements saw a rise from 373 statements sent by email in may to 463 statements sent by email in december.

further Cost metrics they wished to tackle were to decrease the number of cash service & cash rental invoice unresolved Days – their goal was to achieve 30 days unresolved for each.

by the numbers, the Cash service days in march were 114 days - improved to 36 days by the end of 2015, while the Cash rental days in march were 224 days - improved to 25 days by end of 2015. huge, huge results from a high performing team!

The metrics board is not the tool that has been the improvement engine - The Awesome Problem solvers Team is solely responsible for their improvement strides. The metrics board is more like a “steering wheel” tool that helps put things into perspective to visualize a clearer path forward in achieving these solid state improvement results.

Great Job,Mike connell

I am sure many of you have made a resolution to get fitter this new year, you’ve joined a gym and are full of burning enthusiasm to make that change; however as statistics show 90% of you that join a gym will go once and only 15% of you will continue going, and after the first month about 5% of you will still be there. But, what if I told you there was another way to change your mind set towards exercise? The US Department of Health and Human Services has recommended we undertake a minimal of 150 minutes moderate aerobic exercise a week to stay healthy and ward away those gibberly horrible things like heart disease and related illness. That breaks down to about 22 minutes of moderate exercise a day.

HQ five times is 50 minutes of that Government recommendation, do it twice and you’ve hit 100 minutes. Yes, it adds up that quick.I’ve been doing this for 65 days as of writing this… And I am down 22lbs*They say it takes up to two months to form a habit, my mindset towards

exercise has changed and I now look forward to it because I am

seeing a positive change. In the near future, now I’ve

strengthened up my knees and back I

will be heading into a gym to tighten up

some of the office spread I’ve grown. This change started with a simple

Daily 10 minute walk.Go give it a go… 10 minutes could save your like.*results are not typical, the Daily 10 was coupled with morning and evening dog walking and a daily 2000 calorie diet.

toys For totsThis past December we hosted our fourth annual collection for Toys for Tots. Our collection ran from November 25th - December 14th. We made the decision this year to not only collect toys, but also be a drop off location. We were able to be a drop off location for all of our Baltimore locations as well as our Edgewood location and our Winchester locations. We were also asked to be on Fox 45 news this year to talk about our efforts of col-lecting. By the end of the collection we collected 500 toys in addition to 2 bikes. Being a drop off location was fantastic I talked to so many giving people outside the company that were looking for a place to drop off their toys. Alban employees were so giving as they always are, and the Marines were extremely grateful and made mention that without companies like Alban they would not be able to do what they do. Thank you to everyone that took the time to participate during this Christmas season and putting a smile on the face of a child. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy Year!
