Dear Parents, Staff and Children,
Farewell Ms Moore
Sadly, at the end of this week we farewell Ms Moore, who will be leaving Sunbury West to take
up a position at another school next term. Ms Moore has been an integral part of the Sunbury
West team for 21 years, having taught most year levels here, as well as Physical Education. Ms
Moore is an extremely hard working teacher and as we know, has a relentless passion for
Numeracy. Ms Moore invests deeply in the students she teaches, ensuring positive outcomes
for all. We thank Ms Moore for being a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend at Sunbury
West and wish her every happiness and success as she embarks on a new journey at her new
school.
Story Dogs
Thankyou to our JSC for hosting the launch of our Story Dogs program in the Year 2 area. We
are thrilled to welcome Loki and Jade to our school as we work in partnership to promote
reading and nurture a love of literature. We were pleased to raise $218 to support the Story
Dogs organisation.
A particularly fun theme for our dress up day, it was great to see so many fantastic and creative
costumes. We look forward to our article in The Leader newspaper.
Thankyou also to Allison for the meal deal day to further support the event.
Chocolate Drive
Our Chocolate Drive is the next event on our FOSW calendar with chocolates going home this
Wednesday. Families will have the opportunity to sell these over the holidays with the drive
concluding on the 19th July.
New Uniform
School Council has now approved our new uniform for 2020. Whilst it is important to maintain
the integrity of the Sunbury West tradition, we feel that it is time to go with a more
contemporary look. Our revised colours will be red, white and black, hopefully making the
purchase of some of the core items like pants and shorts more accessible to families.
We intend to roll out the new uniform to our 2020 Preps, with all other families to opt in over a
period of time which will be confirmed by Council.
Winter Sports
Well done to all our Year 5 /6 students who participated in the Winter Sports Interschool
Competition. Competing in Football, Soccer and Netball, the teams enjoyed varying degrees of
success with everyone experiencing a win on the day. Our students represented our school
with pride and from all reports had a great day.
Wishing all our families the best during the Term 2 vacation period. We look forward to seeing
everyone back at school on the 15th July.

Our Prep students have been very busy...
The Preps have been learning how to be safe this term and what to do when we need help.
We saw what a fire fighter looks like with all their equipment on. I wonder who this is?
Hannah pretended to put out a fire.
Katie came and showed us how to be safe on a plane.
At the fire station we learnt to get down low and go, go, go.

Grade 1/2
Grade 1/2 Sunbury Hop On Hop Off Bus Excursion
The Grade 1/2s have been learning about what a wonderful place Sunbury is to live.
They went on a Hop On, Hop Off Bus tour around Sunbury last Friday. The children
learnt so much about the town they live in and had fun along the way.
Last Friday we went to Emu Bottom. We got to see
George’s house. We got to see all the stuff that the
blacksmith made. We got to have some photos too.

We went on a bus. They had a wagon at Emu Bottom.
We saw George’s house. At Emu Bottom we saw
George’s shed where he cut the sheep.

On Friday we went on our Hop On Hop Off bus. First we went to Emu Bottom. In
1835 George Evans came here. He built
his house in 1836. He had six children.

Hop On Hop Off Bus
On Friday 21st June we went on an ex-
cursion. Firstly we went to Emu Bot-
tom. It was made out of bluestone. Next
we went to the Old Sunbury Courthouse. We had a play at the Old Sunbury Court-
house. Josh was the judge, Summer was Miss Mary Johnson, James had a black
bushy beard. Ben looked like a policeman. Anastasia was Mr Brown. Thirdly we

went to the old gaol. It was freezing. If I was in there I would be freezing – even
cold. Fourthly we went to the new and shiny police station. After that we went to
the Nook to have our snack and have a little play. We left and went to the Village
Green and saw the water fountain and the Clarke family cannon.

Our Excursion
First we went to Emu Bottom. I saw the blacksmith’s bellows. I saw George’s house. I
saw the play. James was the prisoner who had the big bushy beard. He was funny. I
saw the soldiers who died in the war. We went to Galaxyland because we had to eat
our lunch.

On Friday the 21st June we went to the Old Sunbury Courthouse. We had a play. It
was fun. But we first went to Emu Bottom. I
saw a wagon and the shearer’s shed. Next we
went to the old gaol. It was cold and it was

Year 3/4’s
Sand Pit Investigations
3/4T has been busily measuring and designing in the last few weeks, investigating whether a sandpit would fit in the undercover area near the Office building.
First we had to measure the undercover area. We were finding the perimeter measurements. We made our own measuring tapes and then we worked together to find out the length of each wall.
We recorded our thinking and then compared our measurements with each other.
We are now developing sandpit designs that might be suitable for the undercover area.

Year 3/4’s 3/4 Location Unit
In 3/4, we are currently learning about location in Mathematics. Last week, 3/4O
went out into the playground and made a set of directions using all of the language
we brainstormed as a class. For example, some directions included words such as:
above, next to, underneath, behind and forward, just to name a few! They then had
to direct their classmates around the playground, following their list of instructions.

Winter Sports- Netball Girls Team
On Friday the 13th of June the 5\6s had winter sports. They had a choice of netball, soccer or footy. Today we will be talking about the girls netball team. We played 7 minute halves but big schools played 10 minute halves.
The first team we played was Diggers Rest, in the first half we scored 6 goals and they got 1 then in the second half we got 5 and they got 2 so in the first round it was 11 to 3 and we won.
The next round we sadly lost to Heights with a score of 2 to 13. It was quite hard because most people were taller than our whole team. It was sad that we had lost the round against Heights.
Next we were versing Goonawarra they were also really tall. First we were winning with a score of 6-5 but then they caught up and we ended up losing from 10-16.
Next was Our Lady of Mount Carmel most of them were taller but I guess we just have a really small team. In the first half we scored 4-6 we were winning but then we lost from 9-7. We all
had a great time and we wish we could go and do it again.

Winter Sports Mixed Netball Team
What a fantastic day Oscar and I had at winter sports, we surprisingly won 2 of 4 games in the boys mixed team.
The players on our team played different positions such as centre, goal attack, wing attack, goal defence, wing defence, goalkeeper and goal shooter. Our team was Oscar, Bailey, Issy, Charlotte, Tahlia, Mikayla, Ashlee, Olivia and Kayla. The game times were 7 minute halves for small schools and 10 minute halves for big schools.
In the finals for the boys mixed teams it was Diggers Rest vs Killara. Killara won by 17 points- 3-20.
When we all got back the teachers let us play board games and go to all the grade 5/6 rooms - there were music in one room Jenga in another room and UNO in the other.
It was a great day for everyone.

Salesian College Survey
It is an exciting time at Salesian College.
As educators, we are undertaking the important task of reflecting on how the College contributes to our local and global
community, and finding out what our community wants and expects of us going into the future.
We are now turning our thoughts to future of the College and have commenced the journey to develop a new Master Plan,
‘Towards 2030’.
To gain a better insight into community expectations, all members of your school community to participate in a short 15
minute anonymous survey.
The survey is designed to collect data that will inform strategic directions to determine a Master Plan that will see the College transform by exploring new trends, innovations and research that could potentially alter the educational experience
for our students in the decade ahead.
Whilst 2030 may seem like a distant future, it is necessary to start planning now for the predicted changes to student
enrolment, staffing levels, direction of learning and teaching and community expectations.
To access the survey, please click here. This survey will be open until Friday 12 July 2019.
Thank you for your participation. Your feedback is vital to development of a new phase of education in our community.
