The homestead act-law enacted in 1862 that provided 160 acres of land to any citizen or intended citizen

Social Darwinism-grew out of the English naturalist Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, he said that some species flourished and pass their traits down to the next generation

Fredrick law Olmsted-landscape architect planned urban parks in new york, he was selected to plan central park in new york city

Bessemer process-devoleped by the british manufacturer henry bess, this machine involved injecting air into molton iron to remove carbon and other impuritys

Sand creek massacre-it brought peace treatys with the apache, kiowa, and cheyenne the treatys ceded last land they wandred as nomads until a reservation was made for them

Jane adams- was a pioneer settlement worker and founder of hullhouse in chicagoshe was also a public philosopher, soicalist,author and leader in womens sufferage

Joseph pulitzer- a hungarian immagrant who had brought the news paper to new yorkhe pioneered popular innovations such as a large Sunday edition , comic’s,sports, and womens news to the newpaper

Samual gompers- led the cigar makers international unions to join with other craft unions, and was the americanfederation of labor with gompers as president focused on collective bargaining between represenitives of labor and management to reach a written agreements on wages,hours, and working conditions

Dawes act- this act broke up the reservations and gave land to individualnative americans 160 acres each

George Eastman- he introduced his kodak camera the purchase price was 25$ and included a roll of film, once the flim was used up you could send the camera back to the factory and for 10$ the pictures were devoleped and returned with the camera reloaded

Ghostdance- this a was ritual dance that native Americans thought that it would bring their land back, the movement spread rapidly among the Sioux tribe
Wounded knee- on December 28th the 7th Calvary custers old regiment rounded up about350 starving and freezing sioux and took them to a camp at wounded knee in south dakota

w.e.b dubois- the first African American to receive a doctorate from harvard strongly disagreed with Washington gradually dubois founded the niagara movement which insisted that blacks should seek a liberal arts education so that the communtiy would have strong inteligent african americans
William randolph hearst- had purchased the new york morning jounal, hearst who had already owned the san francisiso examiner sought to out do pulitzer by putting exaggeratedtales in the jounal

Orville and wilbur wright- brothers the wright brother’s were bicycle manufactures from dayton, ohio. They experimented with new engines powerful enough to keep heavyer than air crafts along, on december 17th 1903 at kitty hawk, nc their biplane covered 120ft and lasted 12 seconds
