Injury in America Report released by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Science pilot program started for coordinated injury control at CDC (based on recommendation from IOM report). 1987

CDC begins funding Injury Control Research Centers (ICRCs) throughout the United States to study ways to prevent injuries and disabilities. 1989

Injury Control Report released by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Science Congress passes Injury Control Act – authorizing permanent program at CDC and providing direct appropriation. 1992

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is elevated from Division of Injury Epidemiology & Control. 1993 State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association (STIPDA) is formed during Second World Congress on Injury Prevention and Control.

The Secretary's Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control publishes "Injury Control in the 1990s: A National Plan for Action."
