Timeline Astrology Magazine - 13 By Marianne Jacuzzi Whose energy dominates? When planets come together in a constellaon, various factors determine their relave strength, and somemes it’s complicated and difficult to discern which one overpowers the other. But that’s not the case here! Saturn clearly dominates in this Capricorn conjuncon, with far-reaching implicaons for sociees and individuals. What’s true for the Graha Yuddha—when two planets share the same degree—is true for the wider period of conjuncon. In general, when Saturn is involved in a Graha Yuddha, his greater expanse due to his rings usually makes him the victor, even though Jupiter has greater mass. Since Saturn owns Capricorn, his power increases even more, because planets gain strength when residing in their own constellaon. And Jupiter in Capricorn is debilitated, his light the weakest and most compromised therein. His precise point of debilitaon is 5 degrees, exactly where he and Saturn come together in Graha Yuddha. Then magnifying Saturn’s dominance even higher, the point of exact conjuncon happens at the Winter Solsce, when Saturn’s dark energy is naturally the strongest. The shak of Uara Ashadha reinforces the effect of Saturn’s conquest too. Though individuals will be impacted differently, according to their unique birth chart, everyone will experience an intensificaon of Saturnine energy and a diminishment of Jupiter’s light, as indeed will the world at large. Saturn wins this war! Saturn clearly dominates in this Capricorn conjuncon, with far-reaching implicaons It’s significant too that the conjuncon occurs in an earth constellaon, for Saturn indicates earth, another point of confluence for his dominance in 2020 and 2021. Historically, the Jupiter-Saturn Conjuncon occurs in the same element for a large sweep of me, usually around 200 years, its twenty- year periodicity marking that epoch with the quality of the respecve element. Transion periods, when the conjuncon alternates between the previous and subsequent element, link the major periods and vary in length from 60 to140 years. Implicaons for the World The present earth dominant period lasts unl 2199. It began in 1961, though a random fire conjuncon in 2000, near the last degree of Aries, ensured that a bit of fire would contribute as well to the zeitgeist of the new century. That anomaly makes it possible to see the tweneth century as a peculiar and long-lasng transion period, because the movement from fire to earth, which began in 1901, wasn’t truly over unl the end of the tweneth century. Fire favours naonalisc aspiraons, even as they erupt into violence and war; it favours the fight for jusce, independence and liberty; whereas earth fosters the drive for security and material interests, the pursuit of wealth, the exploitaon of resources, and the development of technology. In 1921, the first earth conjuncon in over 600 years followed the violence of World War I, the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Revoluon and the Irish War of Independence. It inaugurated the financial speculaon that led to the devastang crash of Wall Street in 1929. In fact, me could be measured and history studied against the recurring paern of the Jupiter-Saturn Conjuncon. In Mundane Astrology, which analyses history astrologically, this conjuncon is a major theme. And the Jupiter-Saturn Conjuncon in Capricorn in 2020 will be parcularity strong for reasons you’ll see below. Saturn enters Capricorn on 25 January 2020. Jupiter joins him on 30 March, which marks the beginning of the conjuncon. But the mespan is not straighorward, because both Saturn and Jupiter turn retrograde later in the year. Though Saturn remains in Capricorn, Jupiter retrogrades back into Sagiarius on 1 July 2020, where he remains unl 21 November. So the first part of the conjuncon stretches from 30 March unl 1 July. The second part begins on 21 November and lasts unl 6 April 2021, when Jupiter moves into Aquarius. However, Jupiter turns retrograde again! He returns to Capricorn on 15 September 2021. So the third part, runs from 15 September to 21 November 2021. To sum up, Jupiter and Saturn are together in Capricorn: 30 Mar - 1 July 2020 21 Nov 2020 - 6 Apr 2021 15 Sep - 21 Nov 2021 The period when both reside at the same degree, which is known as a Graha Yuddha or planetary war, is as follows: 16 - 18 Dec 2020 — conjuncon at 5° 21 - 24 Dec 2020 — conjuncon at 6° The exact conjuncon falls on 21 December 2020, at 6.20 degrees, in the nakshatra of Uara Ashadha (whose shak or energy is the power to give unstoppable victory). It’s highly significant that this exact conjuncon occurs at the Winter Solsce as well! The energy will be parcularly acute at that apex point, though its effects will permeate throughout the period Saturn and Jupiter are together in Capricorn. J ust as the cycles of Sun and Moon organise me into repeang paerns, so do certain other cosmic cycles create recurring paerns that qualify me and shape desny. The slow-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn and the Nodes) mark phases of experience of long duraon. For insight into the signposts of karmic opportunity, you need to analyse carefully the posion of those planets in transit against your natal chart, because Jupiter remains one year and Saturn two and a half years in a constellaon, plenty of me for their indicaons to condion your consciousness. Depending upon your birth chart, their influence can impact your life in powerful ways. However, when these two giants come together in the same constellaon, which happens approximately every twenty years, the conjuncon they form generates an intense energy that affects everyone, both as individuals and sociees, its compounded force bequeathing a certain flavour to an epoch that creates history. In worldly maers, Jupiter indicatesethics, jusce, and higher principles, which will all be eclipsed by Saturn’sdominance. Financial security, corporate profits and control will takeprecedence. So in terms of mundaneastrology, the advice for 2020 is stayvigilant! Safeguard your personaldata. Be mindful how you use socialmedia, which has stealthilymetamorphosed into a tool ofpropaganda and mind manipulaon. While ensuring a reasonable amountof financial stability for yourself, neverforget the bigger picture of socialjusce, environmental protecon, andhumanitarian outreach to thedisadvantaged. For the enre earthdominant period ahead, the stakes areextremely high for issues aroundclimate change, degradaon of theenvironment and the exncon ofspecies. And now in 2020, just whenour planet needs the ethical visionJupiter bequeaths, his light will bediminished.

Spiritual ImplicaonsHowever, important as these

worldly ramificaons of Saturn’sdominance may be, what maersmost in the truly big picture is thespiritual. For those who’ve dedicatedtheir lives to spiritual evoluon, theJupiter-Saturn Conjuncon has adeeper significance, and from Saturn’spower comes a hidden grace. ThoughJupiter and Saturn both indicatespiritual potenal, they manifestaccording to paths quite opposite toeach other.

As planet of light, abundance, benevolence and fraternity, Jupitergrants the ability to perceive thedivine in every aspect of creaon.

Under the earthinfluence, businessconcerns and largeconglomerates thrive

For those who’vededicated their lives tospiritual evoluon, theJupiter-SaturnConjuncon has adeeper significance

His influence imbues all lifeexperience with a spiritual dimension. It is spirit celebrang maer, for inevery individual, in every detail of themanifestaon, the face of Godradiates.

Thus, Jupiter engages with theworld. He promotes principles of ethicsand jusce, magnanimously striving toserve according to the path of truth.Though material abundance may cometo him in the form of wealth, children, social status and worldly acclaim, awell-aspected Jupiter never aaches tothose gis but employs them to servehigher principles for the good of all. Heindicates advanced knowledge in all itsforms, parcularly those that upli thematerial, such as law, medicine, philosophy and teaching. Jupiter isGuru, a high priest, his spiritualityoriented towards ritual, mantra andworship.

As planet of darkness, limitaon, denial and solitude, Saturn restrictsand frustrates everything to do withthe material world. He brings physicalillness, psychological suffering, financial hardship, mentaldisturbances, loss and pain. Thoughsimple living does fall under Saturn’sdomain, it is not necessarily so foreveryone. Under the influence ofSaturn, certain individuals can risequite high in the world of power andmoney. But contracon is sll there, expressed as discontent, angst andworry. In both cases, either throughmaterial deprivaon or material gain,Saturn fosters some kind of existenaldespair. He teaches the ephemeralityof all things material, orienng theworld-weary heart that is ripe fortransformaon towards renunciaonand transcendence.

Saturn’s path is the “Way of theCross”. It might take a very long me,because Saturn acts slowly andpaently. But eventually, Saturn’s pathculminates in moksha, liberaon fromthe bonds of materiality. Saturn inSanskrit is Shani. Closely linked to LordShiva, Shani (like Shiva) dispels thedistorons and myopia of maya(illusion). He dissolves the veil ofavidya (spiritual ignorance) andgrants realisaon of Ulmate Reality.Through darkness the soul opens tothe radiance of Infinite Light. That isthe essence of the mystery which isSaturn.

As Jupiter (Guru) is the planet ofknowledge, Saturn (Shani) is theplanet of wisdom. Saturn’s dominanceduring the period of the Jupiter-Saturn Conjuncon opens wide thedoor of possibility for profoundspiritual transformaon. It’s theunstoppable victory of eternity overme. This is the hidden graceavailable to all who are ready for itduring this otherwise quitechallenging transit. No maer whatdisturbances you may experienceduring this conjuncon, the firstremedy for you to employ ismetanoia, a profound turning roundof heart. Trust in Saturn! He is theirritant who grows the pearl. Haveconfidence that whatever he bringscontains lessons leading to your InnerAwakening. Shani’s logic runs counterto the world’s. Look deeply into it andsee the pearl of Divine Grace itcontains.

Jupiter-Saturn Conjuncon

In 1941, the Jupiter-Saturnconjuncon occurred again infire, marking the height ofWorld War II and intensifying

independence movements in Africaand India, which would result infreedom from colonial control forIndia and most of Africa over the nexttwenty years. In 1961, the new age ofearth began in earnest, characterisedby a sense of limitless expansion anddevelopment, manifesng as thematerial prosperity of the post-warera. Again in 1981, an earthconjuncon accelerated the trend, with the growth of new technologiesand corporate power expanding inways never seen before, with naonalgovernments themselves becomingsubordinate to the financial interestsof powerful corporaons, andcorporaons solidifying their controlwith digital technologies.

Under the earth influence, businessconcerns and large conglomeratesthrive, giving rise to military prowesswhen corporate interests becomethreatened. Military power feedsupon mass fear and paranoia, whichin turn feed upon a sense of scarcity, another effect of escalang corporatepower, which increases the societaldivide between the affluent and thedisadvantaged. These are all themesof Saturn, which the 2020 conjunconwill heighten even more, exacerbatedby Jupiter’s extreme weakness inCapricorn.
