Timeless Teak for Perfect Garden Furniture

No matter your garden or outdoor style - a town balcony, rolling lawns, rooftop gardens to the backyard decked patio, we all want to have some special place in the sun where we can entertain our friends and family, retreat to for a simple cup of coffee or catch up on a chapter in our book. When we create our outdoor space we need to consider and think about what garden furniture will best suit both our lifestyle and the elements of nature. Wooden garden furniture has an appeal of earthiness that simply complements the green lawn and surrounding plants and flowers and seems to bring it all together naturally.

Not all timbers are created equal. There are only a few varieties of timber that are durable enough to withstand rain and harsh sun rays year in and year out. When it comes to true strength and durability Teak wood is probably the best for making garden furniture. It is more expensive than the more readily available types of wood or timbers like pine, but Teak wood lasts for many years and although is expensive in the initial outlay when buying the garden set, it is in the long run excellent value for money.

Why Teak?

Probably the main reason for Teak being a popular choice for garden furniture is it will stand up to decades of the harsh elements and is considered the king of durable woods. It hardly needs any maintenance – a common misconception is that you need to oil teak regularly to maintain it, when all that is required is a light sanding to remove some dirt, and possibly a coat of Teak oil should you wish to keep it in top condition. The low maintenance is mainly due to the density and straight-grained character of the wood which means it is not predisposed to warping and cracking and because of its naturally occurring oil and mineral content, Teak is also rot resistant. Over time, the surface of the wood will age to a beautiful silvery grey hue. However, if you do prefer to keep the golden surface of Teak garden furniture, simply sand and re-oil with Teak oil.

Outdoor furniture is exposed to not only sun, rain and other harsh weather conditions, but also dust and dirt synonymous with outdoor living. No wood, including reputable hardwood Teak, is resistant to dust and dirt. Therefore, it should be cleaned from time to time to keep it looking beautiful and preventing dirt stains ingraining it. Teak like all wood is unfortunately not stain-resistant either – particularly to red wine and coffee. Spillage of drinks and food is going to occur and is part of outdoor entertaining, so when drinks are messed it is best to wipe up the spill as soon as possible to prevent staining as much as possible. There are several stain removers on the market, but for a stubborn stain and as last resort sand the stain away.

Teak garden furniture is virtually totally impermeable to being attacked by insects and rot and this is because of its high concentrations of natural oils within the wood that repel the insects, mould and fungus. Teak wood has a lovely and pleasant aroma –but it is this smell that actually acts as the insect repellent.
