In Timeless Tales, we hope to emphasize the timeless nature ofAesop’s fables. From their very origin—somewhere between 620 to560 BCE—to present day, the morals and messages from each storyare applicable to any time period. With topics ranging from friend-ship to greed, these fables teach children important life lessons.Children brought up listening to these tales learn right from wrong, and eventually, as they grow older, build their ethics and moralsfrom these lessons. Nicholas Carr, author of international bestseller

The Shallows, writes how words in books not only strengthen ourability to think abstractly, but enrich our experiences of the physi-cal world (75), making it evident how important reading is, even fora child.

These stories have been told in a variety of ways over the gener-ations, and they remain a prominent influence on children; eventoday, individuals can admit to having heard at least one of these

well-known fables. Just as storytellers have passed down their talesin various ways, which include orating, writing, publishing, andfinally uploading onto the Internet as an ebook, so too have thesefables made their way through different mediums and surviveddifferent renditions to be present in our lives today.

Timeless Tales includes a collection of fables that we individuallyselected—fables we have been influenced by throughout our child-hood and whose influence continues to impact our lives today. Forinstance, by reading “The Hare and the Tortoise,” we have not onlylearned that “slow and steady wins the race,” but even about theconsequences of procrastination and cockiness. We each continueto appreciate the values we have gained from these tales and hopeyou and your family, too, will be able to grasp the ageless lessonseach tale present.

To make our publication stand out, we wanted to capture theessence of these tales. We decided to use this idea of “ageless and

timeless tales” as the center for our publication’s design. In order toconvey a sense of timelessness, over one spread, we have each fableprinted twice, the first with a more “Medieval” look and the second

with a more “modern” look. For the “Medieval” look, for example,we would start each page with a drop cap of the first word to draw

the reader’s attention and add to the context of the tale. For the

“modern” look, we will employ various techniques of minimalism, such as “flat” icons and images and solid/ monochromatic color-gra-

dients. While each “Medieval” design is fairly consistent, we usedseveral variations for the “modern” pieces in order to show how

rapidly ideas are evolving today.

Additionally, the cover of any publication plays a significant role inrepresenting the book. Since the main distinguishing factor of this

publication was the timelessness of the stories, we decided a clockwould be an appropriate image. Since each story was printed twice, once with a “Medieval” design and once with a “modern” design,

we used both Roman numerals and a more sleek type on the clock.

Man and his Wife had the good for-

tune to possess a Goose which laid a

Golden Egg every day. Lucky thoughthey were, they soon began to think they were

not getting rich fast enough, and, imagining

the bird must be made of gold inside, they

decided to kill it in order to secure the whole

store of precious metal at once. But whenthey cut it open they found it was just like

any other goose. Thus, they neither got rich

all at once, as they had hoped, nor enjoyed

any longer the daily addition to their wealth.

Much wants more and loses all.

n Ass and a Fox went into partnership and sallied

out to forage for food together. They hadn’t gone

far before they saw a Lion coming their way, at

which they were both dreadfully frightened. But the Foxthought he saw a way of saving his own skin, and went

boldly up to the Lion and whispered in his ear, “I’ll man-

age that you shall get hold of the Ass without the trouble

of stalking him, if you’ll promise to let me go free.” The

Lion agreed to this, and the Fox then rejoined his compan-

ion and contrived before long to lead him by a hidden pit, which some hunter had dug as a trap for wild animals, and

into which he fell. When the Lion saw that the Ass was

safely caught and couldn’t get away, it was to the Fox that

he first turned his attention, and he soon finished him off,

and then at his leisure proceeded to feast upon the Ass.

Betray a friend, and you’ll often find

 you have ruined yourself.
