In order to prevent the cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), Iwaki City is subsidising rubella antibody tests. In
cases where antibody levels are low, the City will also subsidise vaccinations.
Rubella is an infectious viral disease which displays symptoms of rashes and fevers. If a woman in the early stages of
pregnancy contracts rubella, the infant may suffer from CRS, which can manifest as cataracts, sensorineural deafness,
congenital heart diseases and developmental disorders.
There is no danger in getting another rubella vaccination even if you are already immunised against rubella. Moreover,
pregnant women are not able to receive rubella vaccinations, so if you are in your 20s to 40s and are unsure about your
vaccination history, you should be vaccinated. Rubella vaccinations are available at medical institutions which provide
vaccination services.
For more information, please contact the Infectious Disease Countermeasure Section, Public Health Centre:

For many people in Japan, Golden Week is the longest stretch of holidays in the year. This of course
means that a lot of people choose to travel during the break, with accommodation and transport
getting booked up fast. If you will be traveling Golden Week, be sure to enjoy yourself and
remember to stay safe on the busy roads. For those of you who will spend the holidays in Iwaki, be
sure to get out and enjoy the many festivals held by different shrines throughout the city!
Also, although Mother's Day is celebrated on different days around the world, in many countries
(including Japan) it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. If you do have a mother living in
one of the many countries where Mother’s Day is celebrated in May, don't forget to call her!
