The Indian government spends only 1% of its

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on healthcarefacilities, forcing millions of people to struggle

to get medicines, Oxfam and 62 other agencies

said in a report called: Your Money or Your Life.

What is trans fat?Trans fatty acid (trans fat) is created artificially when liquid oils are made

into solids such as shortening. Hydrogen is added to vegetable oil in aprocess known as hydrogenation to increase shelf life and flavor stability

    of foods.

Why is trans fat harmful?Like saturated fat and dietary cholesterol, trans fat has been found to

raise the level of LDL (or bad cholesterol) that increases the risk of

    heart disease.

Is all fat bad?No. Fat is a major source of energy for the body, and aids in the

absorption of some vitamins. When consumed in moderation, fat is

important for good health. Unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and

polyunsaturated) provide benefits without raising LDL levels. Reading

food labels will help consumers make more healthful food choices.

Denmark: Lower trans fat or go to jail

Two years after artery-clogging oils made illegal, pastries are

    still tasty

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Two years ago, Denmark declared war on artery-

clogging oils, making it illegal for any food to have more than 2 percent trans

fats. Offenders now face hefty fines or even prison terms.

The result? Today, hardly anyone notices the difference. The french fries are

still crispy. The pastries are still scrumptious. And the fried chicken

is still tasty, thanks to Healthier oils such as canola

or olive oil. Oct. 17, 2006

New York City passes trans fat ban

    Restaurants must eliminate artery-clogging

    ingredient by July 2008

Three years after New York City banned smoking in

restaurants, health officials have voted to prohibit

something they say is almost as bad, artery-clogging

artificial trans fatty acids found in many fried foods.

NYC to restaurants: No trans fat

Dec. 5 2006: New York restaurants will be prohibitedfrom serving food cooked in oil containing trans fats.

    NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

NEW YORK - The Board of Health voted Tuesday to

make New York the nations first city to ban artery-

clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants from the

corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.Restaurants will be barred from using most frying

oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will

have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of

    Trans-fats banned in California

California has become the first US state to ban restaurants and food retailers from

using trans-fats, which are linked to coronary heart disease.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said the new legislation, which will take effect in 2010,

represented a "strong step toward creating a healthier future".

Some cities, like New York City,Philadelphia and Seattle, have already

banned the fats. Many food makers and restaurant chains have also been experimenting with

replacements for oils and foods that contain them.

Doctors demand ban on 'damaging' trans fats

Leading doctors have demanded a ban on the use of trans fats - chemically altered

vegetable oils found in thousands of foodstuffs such as biscuits, ready meals and

margarine - because of concerns they can damage health.

The UK Faculty of Public Health is urging ministers to eradicate artificial trans fatty

acids, which are used to increase a foods shelf life, from the British diet to reduce the

risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The World Health Organisation also believes artificial trans fats, which have

already been banned in Denmark, New York, California,

Switzerland and Austria, are harmful to health and is calling for furtherrestrictions on their use.

Australian ban on trans fats urged

PUBLIC health officials are calling for Australia to follow the lead of otherWestern nations in banning trans fats from the nations dinner table.

Im not aware of any benefits that trans fats have brought to humankind, said

Professor Daube, president of the Public Health Association of Australia. If they

can do it in New York then we can do it in Australia. It just needs some

determined action.Trans fats are banned in Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, New York City and

California. Pressure is also growing for a ban in the UK, with a recent British

Medical Journal editorial endorsing earlier calls from leading public health

    bodies.

There was also evidence that consumers might overreact to trans fats labelling

by choosing unhealthy, high saturated fat alternatives such as palm oil, the

    spokesperson added.

    Beware of trans fats

There's no middle path, drop these fats to stay heart healthy.Trans fat content in our diet should be zero. I was disappointed to read that Indian

government has recommended trans fat content in oils be brought down only gradually

to 5% by 2011 "while awaiting more scientific data"!

    Trans fat fest in India

The situation in India is actually appalling. A landmark study conducted by the Centre for

Science and Environment in 2007 revealed dangerous levels of trans fats in most brandsof cooking oils. The biggest source would appear to be processed/packaged foods and

street food-samosas, pakoras, puris, tikkis-likely fried in 'vanaspati'.

Can we enjoy baked and fried foods without trans fats? In our house, we use only

healthy oils for frying and the food remains delicious; I have even baked cookies and

cakes with canola oil and they tasted just as good!

Ban trans fats for health's sakeBreaking decades of habit, the food industry has now responded to public pressure in

the media and in lawsuits in the US and made major changes. Big fast food chains abroad

have all been able to find alternatives to trans fat containing oils. It's time this happened

    in India

the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation in Boston.

Sadly, the Indian foods available in restaurants areloaded with trans-fatty acids and saturated fats.

They use vanaspatifor cooking bhaturas, parathas, puri

    (poori) and tikkis.

Indian Food 100 g Trans Fat

    Bhatura 9.5%

    Paratha 7.8%

    Poori 7.6%

    Tikkis 7.5%

But only 4.2%-6.1% trans-fatty acids in French fries. This means that the Indian food is worse than the Western foods.

Britannia has undertaken an initiative to make

its products healthier on two dimensions

removal of unhealthy content (transfats) and

addition of healthy content. We were the first

bakery company in India to proactively removetransfats from our portfolio. We have also

    made significant investments in the

fortification of our products with relevant

vitamins, minerals etc. The entire Britannia

    biscuit portfolio is transfat-free

The omega-3 group: Super healthy fats

We should all be increasing our intake of

healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which we need

for body functions like controlling blood

clotting and building cell membranes in the

brain. Were still learning about the manybenefits of Omega-3, but research has shown

this fatty acid can have a positive impact on:

    Cardiovascular disease. Epidemiologic and

clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty

acids decrease triglyceride levels, the growth

rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and the risk ofarrhythmias. They also can slightly lower blood

    pressure.

Liver cancer. Omega-3 fatty acids may be an

effective therapy for both the treatment and

    prevention of human liver cancers.

Depression. Omega-3 fatty acid DHA reducessymptoms of depression probably because it

increases gray matter in the brain.

Dementia. Eating fatty fish, high in omega 3,

lowers the likelihood of developing silent

brain lesions that can cause memory loss and

    dementia.
