• Hormones: Special chemicals produced by the body that cause changes.

Girls and Puberty•A good sign you're getting close to the time when your first period will arrive is if you notice a discharge coming from your vagina. It might be thin and slightly sticky or thick and gooey, and can be clear to white or off-white in color. Usually, this happens about 6 months before you get your first period.

• It usually lasts from 3-7 days.
• Besides bleeding, there may also be:

•Some girls will find that their menstrual cycle lasts 28 days, others might have a 24 day cycle, a 30 day cycle, or even longer.
• It may take the body some time to sort out all the changes. For example; a girl may have a 28 day cycle for two months then miss a month.
•Usually, after a year or two, the menstrual cycle will become more regular.
Will other people know you are having your period?•No way!
• You may feel like you are different at this time of the month, but people will not notice.
• At any one time, 20% of all young women will be having their period.
• Can you pick which other students are having their period? or teachers? Do you know when your mother is having her period, unless she tells you?
• Only you will know, unless you tell someone yourself.
