thing would-be seniors most anxiously anticipate, there’s also a lot of work ahead in the coming months for current high school juniors.

Perhaps no task is more im-

portant for current juniors than deciding where to apply to col-lege, and how to make those applications the best they can possibly be. Of particular im-portance is the college essay,

where prospective college stu-dents set themselves apart by writing thoughtfully and in a way that compels an admis-sions board to look at them as serious candidates for ad-mission to a given university. When writing a college essay,

today’s juniors should remem-ber the following.

* Keep things personal: An effective college essay will let an admissions board under-stand who you are, as opposed to what you’ve done. Your activities list and high school transcripts will let them know what you’ve done, but an ef-fective essay should give them a glimpse of who you are as a person.

* Be specific: Being specific doesn’t necessarily mean you need to write things like, “I want to go to medical school to study orthopedic surgery.” Most high school juniors have no idea what they want to be. However, you can be specific

about what you hope to gain from college, as opposed to using predictable cliches such as “I hope to have a great ex-perience.”

* Don’t make an essay into a resume: Too often, college applicants use their essays as a means to recite their high school resume. Rather than re-peating items that are included elsewhere in the application, use the essay as a chance to

explain how your resume has helped mold you into the per-son you are today and how this makes you a viable candidate for admissions.

For example, rather than simply saying, “I played varsity baseball for three seasons,” say, “My experience playing varsity baseball taught me to work well with others and contribute to goals that were bigger than myself.”

Find Your Way Through The Financial Aid Process

As scores of high school se-niors across the country ready themselves for their final year of high school, many of those students and their parents are getting acquainted with the financial aid process. With col-lege on the horizon and the economy in flux, more and

more families are expected to seek financial aid to help fi-nance their kids’ college edu-cations.

Even for parents who have done it before, the financial aid process can be confusing. For parents of high schoolers about to begin their secondary

school swan song, consider the following tips to successfully navigate your way through the financial aid process.

* Don’t stall or procrastinate: Financial aid partially works on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it’s best to apply as soon as you can (January 1st). You can estimate income or sim-ply look at your final W-2 for the year to answer questions regarding yearly earnings and finances.

* Begin with the FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be the first form you complete, even if you’re aware you don’t qualify. Other types of financial aid, such as state grants and loans, typically require that

you fill out the FAFSA, so this should be done first and as soon as possible.

* Go for the gold: Students should apply for all types of available aid, be it a loan from Uncle Sam or individual grants and scholarships. Each school has a number of unique schol-arships and grants, and parents and students will never know about them unless they ask. It’s typically free to apply, so it can’t hurt to apply for anything

and everything.* Seek help and advice:

Particularly for parents going through it for the first time, the college and financial aid appli-cation process can be over-whelming and even intimidat-ing at times. High schools have counselors who have been through the process numer-ous times and who are more than glad to help. If your child has a particular school in mind, TuRn TO PAGE C-15

Johnson PTO Treats Teachers During Teacher Appreciat ion Week

The Johnson Elementary PTO treated the school staff like royalty during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4th- 8th.

On Monday they brought in breakfast. Each morning, some parent would bring in muffins, donuts, coffee cake, casseroles, etc.

All were delicious and greatly appreciated.

Wednesday they provided volunteers to stay with all the classes so the staff could all sit and eat lunch together as a faculty and family.

They provided stuffed po-tatoes, salad, and a ton of desserts.

Friday they washed cars for the faculty.

They have done an out-standing job this year, ac-cording to the Johnson fac-

ulty and staff members.
