PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 6-7 Transition Evening, ‘Timboon On Display’ Last night we had a very positive response to school ‘Timboon On Display’ open evening. I would like to again encourage families to contact me or Dan Walker (7-12 Assistant Principal) if you would like to book a personal tour of the school. In addition to this, we would like to again remind families to submit their transition enrolment form to the general office by Friday 29th June. School Camps Last week our Year 11 cohort had the opportunity to attend work experience in Melbourne for the week. This really does provide a real life learning opportunity for our students. Students were expected to independently travel to and from work each day on public transport. Many former students often comment on the confidence this camp provided to them. Navigating through Melbourne is not easy! A big thank you to Ms Deppeler, Mr Deppeler and Ms Nicholson for assisting students during this week. Building update This week we received some great news that our building project can recommence. There was temporary hold on the project due to a major electrical upgrade that needs to take place to our red brick building (new canteen and Year 5/6 learning spaces). We are getting ready to take possession of the newly refurbished secondary woodwork facility (formerly our secondary music space); see pictures below. This will provide outstanding facilities for our secondary students.

Attendance at Timboon P12 School: As of Term 2 an SMS will be sent to parents when their child is absent. The SMS will read, “{student name} is marked absent as of {time}. Can you please contact the school on 5598 3381 or place a note on Compass to indicate why your child is away.” The purpose of the SMS is twofold:

To inform you of the absence of your child from school

To ensure that we know the reasons why students are

not attending school, with an aim to reduce

unexplained absences across the school

Some common questions… What if I have swimming or other sporting commitments in the morning? Please give the school a call and let Raelene or Cheryl know the days your children will be dropped off late so that we can enter this on Compass. You will still, at this point in time, receive an SMS if your child is absent in the mornings. Why do I need to know if my child is away? The State Government recently brought in regulations to ensure that parents are notified of absences on the first day a student is absent. Parents trust us with their children’s safety and we want to ensure that you are informed if they have not made it to school. Why does the school need to know why my child is away? We are partners with families in the education of children. We see it as vital that we understand the reasons why students may be away from school so that if families need support we can assist. Understanding the reasons allows us to identify issues and help students to be at school regularly. It is only one day what does it matter? We know that our students get sick, that there are family emergencies and that this means that students cannot get to school. However, ongoing regular absences have long term impacts on a child’s educational success. Consider the following statistics – they add up:

A student with an 80% attendance rate misses the

equivalent of one day per week or 40 days per year. This

is the equivalent to missing over 2½ years of school P-

12.

A student with a 90% attendance rate misses the

equivalent of 1 day per fortnight or 20 days per year or

over 1 year of school P-12.

A student who is half an hour late each day misses the

equivalent of 16.6 days of learning each year.

Who can help us if we are struggling to get our child to school?

We are here to help. Please call your child’s teacher in

the Primary School or Year Level Coordinator in the

Secondary School as a first point of contact on 5598

3381.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

Cross Country Although it was a little chilly, we conducted the P-2 Cross Country event on Tuesday. It was a great atmosphere, with all students cheering the little runners on as they went past. Thank you to the parents and families that came to support the event. Congratulations to all the runners and to Miss Costelloe for her terrific organisation. Congratulations to our District Cross Country competitors who ran at Noorat on Monday. Miss Barr and Miss Costelloe were very impressed with everyone’s effort. Staff Professional Development Mrs Moriarty, Miss Krueger and Mrs Coates completed their third and final workshop in Cued articulation practices last week. Their feedback has been positive and they are looking forward to putting their learning into practice with their students, as necessary. The following information is from the Sounds of Literacy website: What is Cued Articulation?

It is a set of hand cues for teaching the individual sounds in a word. The hand movements are logical – each hand movement represents one sound and the cue gives clues as to how and where the sound is produced.

It is not a sign language where the whole word is signed – but Cued Articulation can be used alongside sign language. Cued Articulation should not be confused with

‘Cued Speech’.

Colour Coding is also used for the written letters which represent these sounds. Math Olympiad A strong team of 35 Year 5-6 students has been nominated to take part in this year’s Math Olympiad, and I am very excited to be given the opportunity to tutor and coordinate the Primary team. Students met for the first time this week and have been given a homework task to complete before Monday. It is not a compulsory program, so if your child attended but has reservations about taking part, please ask them to speak with me. Our first competition is next Wednesday. NAPLAN With one test to go Thursday morning, I have been impressed with the attitude and effort our Year 3 and 5 students have displayed thus far. There is plenty of press around the NAPLAN program, but I ask that you remember that it is only one assessment that is taken in one snapshot of time. I have emphasised many times this week with students that it does not determine who they are as a person. If your child missed a test, due to absence, then a catch up will be provided on Friday. After this date, students are not permitted to sit the tests. NAPLAN results are generally released in August. Coming up: Friday 25th May – Division Cross Country (Warrnambool) Monday 28th May – Year 5/6 (classes A & B) Biocats Thursday 31st May – Year 5/6 Tri-Sports (please note: it is not on Friday 1st June, as previously advertised) Monday 4th June - Year 5/6 (classes C & D) Biocats Tuesday 5th June – Cultural Performance @2pm Friday 8th June – Report Writing Day (no classes P-12) GILL HAMPSON

3-6 District Cross Country On Monday 14th May, 48 students from Timboon P-12 participated in the District Cross Country at the Noorat Recreation Reserve. All students competed highly in a true Timboon P-12 fashion. Evie Gordon, Finn Castledine, Nathan Ellemor, Molly Jones and Oscar Johnson have qualified for the Division Cross Country, to be held in Warrnambool at Deakin University on Friday 25th May. Thank you to all parents, staff and volunteers who assisted in making the day a success.

CAROLINE COSTELLOE Sports Coordinator

On Tuesday 15th May, P-2 students participated in their very own Cross Country. All students gave their best efforts and enjoyed their own sports day. The amount of parent support was fantastic and we were fortunate to have a clear and sunny afternoon. We would like to congratulate all students on their efforts. Ribbons were awarded for the first three place getters in each race.

Introducing the Farm Safety Adventure Program

The Farm Safety Adventure Portal that previous Year 5/6 students helped develop with digital design and innovation company, Portable, and Dairy Australia has been launched at the 2018 PIEFA (Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia) conference in Canberra. Deanne and John from Jaydee Events and Bill Youl from Dairy Australia encouraged teacher delegates to became kids again, building a jigsaw puzzle from the farm dangers cartoon and working through the hazards depicted in the cartoon. The two winning teams had a go playing the game with the aliens, the Burples, which were named by the Timboon students. Deanne gave a good plug to the TAP and Timboon P12 School as the instigating force behind the program. The Adventure Portal is on trial in 24 schools across Australia … not too shabby for a regional school concerned about keeping our students safe!

It's not just portals on the blog, but Maggie and Bambi, community surveys, Blazeaid biscuits, lemon scented Purple Power, incubating eggs, preparing for a pumpkin harvest, Game of Drones, a report from George the Farmer and a new verb - TAP ify...check it all out on the TAP blog

It's a working holiday for Bambi and Maggie

It's a tough gig but someone has to do it... those are probably the thoughts of our two calves, Bambi and Maggi, that have been loaned to the school for three weeks for our Cows Create Careers science elective by ex-student, Peter Fulton. The calves have been fed, watered, patted, measured, talked to, fed, pampered, assessed, scratched, recorded, exercised, fed, cuddled and observed...a tough gig indeed.

Procedural writing challenge - Click go the shears

As a hands on introduction to procedural writing, Mrs McMeel's and Ms Barr's Year 3/4 classes observed as local shearer, Steve McKenzie, shore Harry's sheep at the ag precinct. Students watched the shearing procedure and asked lots of interesting questions about why and how sheep are shorn. They learnt that asking and answering questions is a wonderful way to fully understand the tasks required to complete the goal of safely shearing the sheep whilst maximising fleece quality. Back in the classroom, students wrote a procedure for shearing sheep and three woolly facts. Great learning opportunity Harry, thanks!

ANDREA VALLANCE TAP Coordinator

Jo Beard On Friday 4th May, Jo Beard, Mayor of Corangamite Shire came and spoke to the Year 7/8 elective Who’s in Charge. She spoke about the general role of council representatives, the structure of the Corangamite Shire, some of the lobbying they do and the local and state government budgets. This included explaining some of the wins the shire has had in the recent state budget, particularly regarding roads and the Shipwreck Coast masterplan. Jo spent some time talking about the St Patrick’s Day fires both in general and in terms of the council’s role. It was interesting to hear about her meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and how he had a really positive impact on people’s morale regardless of their political views. Students were able to voice some of their own ideas on areas around Timboon and Port Campbell that they felt could be improved. There was some valuable input on areas such as the swimming pool and skate park in particular. Students also learnt about the Corangamite Youth Council and how they can be used to help implement some of the suggestions made. A big thank you to Jo for giving up her time to come and speak to students as part of the TAP programme.

Timboon Distillery On Wednesday 9th of May the Year 7/8 elective Purple Power visited the Timboon Distillery. Josh Walker explained the process of distilling alcohol and students were able to compare this process to distilling essential oils such as lavender and eucalyptus. The first difference noted was that the wash is heated slowly and does not boil whereas in essential oils we have boiling water. Many similarities exist in the evaporative process but the output is more pure alcohol than other outputs, whereas with essential oil it is a small amount of oil to large amounts of distillate. Josh explained how the pure spirit is clear and does not have a lot of taste. It is by putting it in barrels and by adding flavours that the whiskey and other spirits gain their colour and taste. Josh talked about the growing market for his whiskey and spirits and his plans to expand production in the future. Thank you Josh for giving up your time to be part of our class and the TAP project.

What Really Happened? ALL PUMPKIN GROWERS. Please keep your eyes open for a link, either in the online newsletter, or on Compass. A group of Year 5 and 6 students have been working on their ability to write survey questions to gain useful data. The result is an anonymous ‘survey monkey’ about your pumpkin growing experience, either successful or unsuccessful. This data will be analysed by them, as part of their maths program, and presented on Tap’s On day.

Next meeting to be held on Thursday 31st May at 12.00pm in the

library. We hope to see you there.

What’s been happening with TSPA. A busy few weeks for TSPA: we had a very successful Mothers Day Stall – we hope all Mothers enjoyed their presents. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped out on the day. TSPA approved over $10,000 in submissions this year across the school. Some of the things that will be purchased will be.

Alphabet seating rugs for Preps

Targeting spelling books for Year 1-6

3 Marquees in school house colour

Sporting goods

Electric Soldering Irons

Jacaranda Atlases

New IPad covers

Through this annual submission process, TSPA is able to provide items and materials necessary for our children’s education, that would otherwise be unfunded. This is how your help in simple fundraisers directly benefits teachers and students at the school. Pie Drive forms have been sent out – please remember to fill them out and send back to school by Monday 28th May. If anyone needs a form either email [email protected] and we will send you one or there are forms available at the front office. Also a reminder for families wishing to have family portrait done: forms need to be sent in soon. If you need another form, additional copies are available by email or from the front office. Once again we are always in need of new members to join TSPA – we love new ideas and input on what we can do, so we look forward to hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to either send us an email at [email protected] or contact us directly. President: Sharon Cotton Secretary: Sharon Mottram Treasurer: Melinda Drysdale

Snippets from the Grade 6 Students’ recounts of the Taste of Secondary day: … My favourite subject was Science. I liked it because there was lots of cool equipment, like microscopes and computers. In Science we learnt what viruses are and how common they are around here. Then we got to see real diseases under a microscope and got to draw them. There were even ticks and mosquitoes. Shaun …So just after recess I had high hopes for what was next, and when I walked in I was astounded by the look of the room. It was amazing! It was clean, shiny and best of all… MODERN! I loved the look of the art room. Then we started using this paper which when you scratch with a stencil would make it turn white, so there was no colour, but hey, still cool right? No matter how good the class was they made theirs, well theirs. It was so fun to make different shapes and squiggles. I reckon I also loved the freedom of choice. It helped the different be, well … different. Darcy …Before we even chose our stations, we watched the teacher for reasons of what we were cooking and how. My first thoughts, I could nearly promise myself it was going to be easy, for the only reason that the recipe said ‘Easy Coconut Biscuits’. After the demo of how to bake them, we got started. My partner was a friend by the name of Hayley. She seemed to be the better one at cooking. Zara … I really just enjoyed the huge variety of subjects to choose from, and I can’t wait for next year. Molly … Overall the day was amazing and I can’t wait for another one like it. Hannah … it was the best day ever and I can’t wait for year 7. Colby … My favourite thing was definitely cooking because the biscuits were awesome. But the good thing is I know how to make them so I can make more for my family. Tom NIGEL MOTTRAM
