Tim’s CornerAll of us learned strict rules
about writing the King’s English.Do you want some linguistic fun? This is a challenge and will requiresome outside-the-box creativethinking. The following paragraphwas written based upon researchdone at Cambridge University.

Belmont Village is the result ofPatricia Will’s ‘outside-the-box’
dream 19 years ago. Her vision wasamazingly innovative and creative. The result: a compassionatecommunity, enjoyed by very specialresidents and a dedicated, caringstaff. Belmont Village is trulyunique. Would you believe that inArizona, there are literally over2,000 licensed assisted livingcommunities?! I don’t know ofanother that enjoys having nursesadminister medications to assistedliving residents 100% of the time. And to this day, there are very fewthat are committed to havingnurses on-site around-the-clock.The same goes for having on-sitetherapy services...in this industry, that’s very rare. Talk about aspecial place! Patricia’s dream hasevolved into 25 Belmont Villagesaround the country and later thisyear, the first Belmont will open inMexico City. And to think that allof this started with a dream andcommitment 19 years ago. Onbehalf of our wonderful staff andmyself, thanks for sharing in thisincredible adventure!

Reduce Your Riskof Stroke
Since 1989, May has beendesignated as National StrokeAwareness Month. Stroke happenswhen blood flow to part of thebrain is interrupted.
Fortunately, perhaps due toincreased awareness, stroke deathrates dropped 35 percent between1998 and 2008. However, everyyear, stroke still kills more than133,000 people in the U.S., and isa leading cause of serious,long-term adult disability.
Stroke occurs slightly morefrequently in women than men,and African-Americans have anincreased risk for the disease.
Some things you can do tolessen your risk of stroke are:control blood pressure andcholesterol levels, don’t smoke,
limit alcohol consumption, eat ahealthy diet, and exerciseregularly.
There are warning signs of astroke, and acting quickly whenstroke is suspected is critical. TheNational Stroke Associationsuggests the FAST test when strokeis suspected:
Face. Ask the person to smile.Note if one side of the facedroops.
Arms. Ask the person to raiseboth arms. See if one driftsdownward.
Speech. Ask the person to repeata simple sentence. Listen forslurred speech.
Time. If you observe any ofthese signs, call 911 immediately.
Learn more about the diseaseand its prevention and treatmentat www.Stroke.org.

May is the month we celebratemotherhood. We all have haddifferent experiences with ourmothers or being a mother, but ifasked, most of us could list thequalities that the “best of the best”possess. Recently, the Circle ofFriends residents spent timereminiscing and sharing theirthoughts about the complexitiesof motherhood. We hope youenjoy reading their responsesbelow.
“A good mother takes care ofher children. My mom dideverything with respect andhonor. I love and miss her.”– Corky
“A mother is good on her own, cooks, cleans and teaches herchildren. My dad died when I wasyoung; mom had to be both afather and mother. She did a greatjob.” – Dorothy
“A mother takes good care ofher children and makes everyeffort to be home with them.Mom had me late in life. I wasraised with my sister’s kids andmom took care of all of us.”– Pearl
“A mom should always listen. My wife taught our children bothItalian and American culture. Shewas constantly learning andshowing our kids that you are
never too old to learn.” – John“ My mom is very nice, calls me
and shows me she cares. She doeseverything for others.” – Barbara
NeighborhoodOur five senses help us
interpret the world around us. Ifyou think about it, most of yourmost vivid memories areassociated with strong sensoryexperiences. The blue of the sky, mixed with the smell of fresh cutgrass and the sound of childrenlaughing, instantly take you backto a relaxed childhood summerspent playing. The connectionbetween our senses and thecreation of long-term memories isundeniable. That is whysensory-based activities are apowerful way to make newconnections in our brains andstrengthen existing ones. This iswhy sensory activities are a part ofevery day in the Neighborhood. The Canadian Association ofOccupational Therapists (CAOT)explains that sensory stimulationworks best when it uses familiar, everyday objects. A few examplesof the sensory activities providedinclude: residents getting theirhair done, sing-a-longs & lookingat photos. These activities seek tostimulate the senses and produceoverall feelings of well-being.
