DHCAL meeting at the 30.6.03Talks of:•Jae Yu, Univ. of Texas at Arlington, GEM chambers for Digical, 3M, 40 000$/m2

•Vishnu Zutshi, scint. Digical >> today•V. Ammosov, status of RPC, FE•I. Tiapkin, Digital FE electronics•J. Repond, FE for RPC type PPT, 6250 ASIC’s (64 channels each) , FNAL•VK, PPT stack structure, >> see today's meeting•V. Gapienko, simulation studies, digital gas/scint. vs analogue HCAL•J. Repond, simulation studies from L.Xia, (Argonne), radial shower shapes in gas and scint.

>> all talks will be in the web these days... Next meeting of DHCAL end Oct. 03, day later Tile-HCAL main ?

Some remarks:•mean shower radius is larger in scint. than in gas Digical•this comparisons are irrelevant for the analogue Tile-HCAL

where we measure energy instead of pad patterns•400 000 channels needed for 1x1 cm2 cell Digical (~200 000 Euro)•agreement found to use common PPT stack structure with fixed gap width•2 identical (?) stacks needed ( 6 t each) for 2 different test-beams•nobody thinks so far on FE for semi-digital RO, 2-3 bit/channel?

What has been achieved so far ?

•TFS in production at DESY and ITEP:•117 TFS with SiPM’s in ITEP/MEPHI, scint from Vladimir•126/126 TFS from BC-408/SC-306(Protvino)•diagonal curved grooves, machined at DESY•60 cm WLS-fibres are ready and polished•BC-408 ready, TFS production is under way•Protvino tiles machined in 2 weeks?•first TFS studies in minical with BC-408 and 3MA-PMs now•36 pixels with 3/4 fibres to pixel in this month•minical modification in 1-2 weeks,

•support bars for tilt to beam and crane handling•increase gap width by 0.6mm (to confirm by measurements)

•minical electronic window ready, carries 3 MA-PMs and 36 pre-amps•DAQ software is set up, needs data for improvements and optimisation•Have plans/concept to put actual data on web for distributed analysis

What next?

•14+(6) APD’s arrived at DESY, 20 more to be handed over in Prague•APD test at CERN/CMS, 4.-5-7-03, 20 APD’s only•other 20 to test in 2 weeks in Prague or CERN?•25 pre-amp-chips from LAL arrive the 26.6.03 ???•Pre-amp cards designed and ordered in Prague•pre-amp cards (3 with 18 channels each) available end July•need to order soon more super-reflector, new type?

Tile-HCAL Main 2.7.03

V. Korbel, DESY 6

APD-test at CERN

With use of CMS test lab. and standard CMS preamps:•gain vs bias voltage•can we achieve a gain of 200 (500) ??•capacity vs bias voltage (in 25 pF range?)•dark current vs bias voltage•excess noise???

>> need quick answer whether we accept these APD‘s

Tile-HCAL Main 2.7.03

V. Korbel, DESY 7

Design of pre-amps for APD‘s

18 channel pre-amp cards3 cards needed + 1 spare

V. Korbel, DESY 8

DESY test-beam, „Strahl 21“

•energy 0.5 to 7 GeV, 1KHz (3 GeV) to ~1Hz (~ 7GeV)•need vacuum beam line in test area to get proper >5 GeV ??•rates sufficient to get >10000 event samples•spill structure: 1 MHz, 80 msec periods, •repetition rate: 12.5 Hz•beam availability in 2003/2004/2005•test in magnetic field? Which field strength? 2 solenoids, 1.0T

free diameter ~70cm•test in H1-compensator, 4T, free diameter?•all information on beams, energy resolution, rates, operation,.... >>> folder of collected documents, copy in counting room•groups interested:

•KEK/Tokio (Sept. 2003)•CALICE ECAL (later this year?)•Univ. of Texas, digital scint. (2004?)•Most groups of RPC or GEM digital HCAL

•Tohru Takeshita of Shinshu University•Yoshiaki Fujii, KEK

(1) co-working with people who are interested in plastic tile calorimeter.

(2) to test the performance of the direct attached APD shower-max detector by electron beams. Especially the position resolution.

(3) to test the fine segmented pre-shower detector whose read out is via optical fibers by electron beams. Especially the position resolution.

(4) to train young students having experienced at DESY.

(5) we need your detector to measure the energy behind ours.

(6) would like to use the Tile-HCAL DAQ

Energy weighting optimisation;Simulation study to set to limits to reach:----split each calo tile in 2 tile-buffers, one for hadronic energy fraction, other for elm. fraction1. Reconstruct energy without weighting, just sum all tiles

2. ...... With weighting of elm. fraction, optimise weighting to get best energy resolution ( ) of event sample

3. Add elm. and hadr. energy of cells (2 tiles behind each other) try to find cells with dominant elm. contribution, try amplitude dependent weighting, opt. of sample

4. Compare with 2., optimise identification of “cells to weight” (containing sizeable fraction of elm. energy)

5. Vary cell granularity (1-4 tiles) find optimum of sample

6. Vary tile sizes, start again at 3.
