Deputy Mayor Nomvuso Shabalala has been serving as a councillor for the past 19 years. She has served on various portfolio committees and is most proud of her efforts for the community through the Economic Development and Planning Committee.

One of her main priorities is to ensure that women are able to play a significant role in the country’s economy. She has been behind the hosting of many empowerment programmes designed to uplift and impart skills.

Her work on the health, safety and social services ensured that there was a move towards counselling and testing of HIV and an encouragement for TB patients to take their medicine.

Shabalala was a member of the Natal Organisation of Women which fought for the empowerment of women, and her role was to produce slogans and banners for trade unions. Her favourite slogan is “A nation will never be free until women are free.”

As the 20 year anniversary of democracy has passed, Shabalala believes that the Government has done a lot to level the playing fields and promote gender equality. Her passion for community work has brought her rceoignition and she was awarded a Master’s degree by the Emmaneul Bible school for her work on the Masakhane campaign.

As the ward 83 councillor she has encouraged the women in the community to grow food gardens and she established Siza Community Care which now has 40 health care workers. She has stepped in when the Mayor is away and she has little time for her family duties.

But she says careful planning and making time for her four daughters is important. Her husband and son passed away in June and so she is a single parent.

Shabalala is hoping that the upcoming Transnet project – Dig out Port – will afford many opportunities for the young women in the area. She puts her success down to her faith in in God.

He has excellent time management skills and communication skills that require him to motivate, relay information, as well as receive and utilise information from other people.

His vast involvement with many structures combined with his academic background and techniques learnt in class has given him meaningful administrative and managerial skills and abilities, making him an asset to all the organisations that he has work for. He has learnt to work with academics, students, entrepreneurs, religious leaders and political leaders. This has enabled him to see people from different perspectives.

Financial, Human Resource and Project Management skills are key to the success in any field of engineering, and he has learnt and developed these for successful implementation of projects and work processes in his environment, thus leading to success in the office and the ability to multi task at different levels.
