CookThe Spanish word armadillo means “little ar-mored one.” There are twenty species of the odd looking mammals that wear hard shell-like ar-mor. •Armadillosarenotrodentsormarsupi-alsandareunrelatedtoopossumsaswell.Theyare mammals, with bony plates covering their back, head, and legs. Most also have bony plates or rings covering their tails. They are the only livingmammalswithsuchcoverings. •Armadillosoriginated inSouthAmer-ica, which is where most are still residing. The only species in the United States is the nine-bandedarmadillo,whichisfoundmostlyinthesoutheasternstates.Theyareaboutthesizeofanaveragehousecat,ranginginlengthfrom24-31inches(61-79cm)andweighbetween8and15pounds(3-7kg). • The nine-banded armadillo has beenspotted as far north as Illinois and Kansas. Their ears and noses help them find food and escape from predators. Humanscansometimesquietlywatcharmadilloswithoutbeing noticed.

DearReaders, Occasionally I take the lib-erty of sharing events that I perceive as worth mention. This past week there were two separate celebrations that meet this criteria. While bothwere celebrations of life,one was of a life ending and the oth-erofa life togetherbeginning.Ifyouthinkaboutitthat’swhatlifeis-beinningsandend-ings,foronecannothappenwithouttheother. The ending celebrationwas forDr. RichardSmart.Dr.SmartpracticeddentistryhereinCdAforover30years.EveryformerpatientI’vemetconsidershimthefinestdentist they’veeverhad.Adentalhy-gienistfriendwhoworkedwithDicksays‘HewasthekindestandmostgentlemanI’veevermet.’DentistrywaswhatDickdidforalivingandhepractiseditwithdedicationandskill.ButDickwasfarmorethanthat.Dicklovedtheoutdoorsandhadanadventurousspiritthatbroughtouthiscreativeside.Hewasaninventor,bestknown forhisRailcycle,whichallowedhim to‘ridetherails’onhisbicycle.Thisinventiontookhimand friends to where ever there were abandoned rail lines, includingmanyforeignlands.Whatmemoriestheymade!IwillmisssightingDickabouttownonhisbubblebike;italwaysmademewanttodosomethingfun.BeforehisdeathDickauthored‘BikingonRustyRibbonsofSteel’whichinvitesustovicariouslyridealongonhismanyadventures.Thankyou,Dick,forbeingsuchawonderfulrolemodel.RideOn!

The other celebration was one of beginnings -theweddingofourTIDBITSpublisher,EvelynBe-vacquatoOtisHoweIV.Evelyngivessomuchtooth-ersandthecommunityandneverwantsthelimelightor recognition.
