ABOUTour cover:

The surname BAIRD is originally from the south ofFrance, but the first mention of the name in Britain came with William the Conqueror. There is reason to believe that some of our name came to Scotland in 1174 when King William the Lion returned from his captivity in England Early spellings are: BARD, BARDE, BYRD, BEARD, etc.

An old tradition in the family records is that William the Lion, while hunting in one of the southwest counties happened to wander from his attendants and was alarmedby the appearance ofa wild~, and calling for assistance a gentleman by the name of BAIRD, who had followed the King, came up and had the good fortune to slay the object of the King's alarm. For this signalservice, William conferred upon his deliverer large grant of land and assigned him, for his Coat-of-Arms, "A Boar Passant" and for his motto "Dominous Fecit"- which arms are to be seen upon the ancient monuments of the BAIRDs ofAuchmedeen in the church yardof Banff

Some mottoes on our Coat-of-Arms are: "Vi et Virtute" meaning, live with virtue/honor. "And, Dominus Fecit" meaning, God hath made, Wear it well. ...

The genealogy of the BAIRDs begins with the religious persecutions of King James and the Test Act of1681 against Presbyterians by Charles IIofEngland BAIRDs are an integral part of the history of Scotland, North Ireland, France, the Presbyterian Church, and our own American Revolution. Many ofour name gave up their lives, their fortunes, their homes, to follow valiant ifnot always winning causes. Some were political followers of "Bonnie Prince Charlie," and others, for the sake of their religion, were forced to leave their native Scotland

INDIANA:

Baird's History of Clark County. Indiana: By Captain Lewis C. BAIRD, President of the Clark County Historical Society. Published by B. F. Bowen &Company, Indianapolis, Indiana,

Page 857: BAIRD, LEWIS C. was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana, July 3, 1869. The Baird family is one of the older ones in the city of Jeffersonville, being residents here in 1837. The material side, the Howard family, were residents in Jeffersonville in 1835. The early youth of the subject of this sketch was passed in Louisville, Kentucky, Augusta, Georgia, in West Virginia, and in Dallas and Waxahatchie, Texas.

He was educated in the public schools of Jeffersonville until the spring of 1887 when he withdrew, being a junior in the high school at the time, to prepare for admission to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He entered the class of '92, U. S. N. A., and remained a midshipman until June, 1891, when he resigned.

In 1892 he was commissioned captain in the First Regiment Indiana National Guard, serving at such until 1895, commanding his company in the field during the miners' riots in Sullivan county in 1894.

In 1898 he was commissioned captain in the One Hundred Sixty-first Indiana Volunteer Infantry, war with Spain, and served with his regiment in the Army of Occupation of the Province of Havana.

Captain BAIRD was made a Mason in Clark Lodge No. 40, Free and Accepted Masons, at Jeffersonville September 19, 1895, and was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason November 21, 1895. He was master of Clark Lodge in 1900, 1901, and 1902, and is at present secretary.

For thirteen years he was lay reader of St. Paul's Episcopal church, of which he is a member, and is at present a member of and the clerk of the vestry. For a number of years he has been engaged in the practice of his profession of civil and landscape engineering in Louisville, being the civil engineer at Cave Hill cemetery at the present time.

On June 1, 1896, he was united in marriage with Miss Martha H. JOHNSON, the eldest daughter of the Hon. S. S. JOHNSON of the Clark County Bar. Captain BAIRD is a member of the Jeffersonville Commercial Club and takes a keen interest in the development of the city and county.

Page 877: BAIRD, JAMES A., who was part owner of the Baird Woolen Mills, came to Owen township, Clark county, with his father as a boy. From that time onward, through the years of his life, he was the recipient of his neighbors' friendship and good will. He established himself firmly in the industrial life of the community, and was a man of uprightness and probity; and one who never swerved from the settled path of duty.

The subject of our sketch was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in the year 1828. At the time of their arrival in Clark county his father built a woolen mill at the juncture of the cross-roads a short distance from the present family residence.

James A. assisted his father in running the mill from his boyhood and made the venture a pronounced success. The mill was known as the Baird Woolen Mill and, in later years, after the death of the elder BAIRD, it was changed to Baird Brothers, the name by which it went ever afterwards.

He had a great lot of stock, horses, cattle, hogs and sheep. He had all manner of fowls. He grew his own flax and sheared his own wool and made it into cloth on his own farm.

His wife was a woman of great social attractiveness. She was one of the pioneer doctresses and a noted mid-wife, and died April 13, 1835, of a putrid sore throat, {diphtheria?} which came of attending a child which had the same disease. Susan A., their youngest daughter, was the wife of James McMASTER, who is still living (1899) at Sandy Springs, aged eighty-four. Their youngest son, Chambers, has a separate sketch in Volume #7 of the BAIRD Brigade. Their first three children, Robert, Elizabeth ADAMS, and James A., made themselves homes within the original tract taken up by their father. The others went elsewhere into the Great West, and the descendants of Moses BAIRD are a great multitude, whom the census taker could enumerate, but it would take him a long time and a great deal of labor.

Page 223 (Eagle Township): Jesse L. BAIRD, physician, Fincastle, was born March 1, 1854, in Jefferson TownShip, Brown Co., Ohio. His parents are James and Martha BAIRD, of whom we have made mention in thiS work. After receiving a rudimentary education, in the fall of 1872, he entered the Miami University, where he pursued his studies until the following June. In the fall of 1874, he again entered the Miami University, thiS time pursuing a classical course until the following June. In September, 1875, he entered Hamilton College, N.Y., where he continued his studies until date of graduation, June, 1877. He then returned home and for one year studies medicine with Dr. Salisbury, of Russellville, this county. Having received his diploma from a proper medical institute, he located in October, 1880, at Fincastle, and began the practice of medicine. Although a young phYSician, he has secured a good patronage, and which is continually on the increase. Mr. BAIRD is of a sociable, clever disposition, and is a rising young physician.

Page 233 (Jefferson Township): Albert M. BAIRD, farmer, P. O. Russellville, was born Mary 27, 1849, in Jefferson Township, Brown Co., Ohio. He is the son of James and Martha BAIRD, of whom we have made mention in this work. He was reared on a farm and received the rudiments of an education in a district school, which was located across the creek from his father's homestead.

On September 19,1878, he married Miss Alice POTTS, daughter of Matthew (deceased) and Polly A. POTTS. Matthew POTTS was born in Ireland and when quite young his parents emigrated to America. They came to Adams County, probably in the year 1817.

Volume 9- The BAIRD Brigade- Page 5

Matthew remained at home until the date of his marriage to Polly A. SMITH, by whom he had eleven children, eight of whom are still living. Several years after his marriage he moved to Byrd Township, Brown County, where he remained several years, engaged in the milling business, on Eagle Creek. He then moved to a farm in the southern portion of Jackson Township, where he remained until his death, Marach 11, 1876. His widow still survives him, and at present is residing at Carlisle, Jackson Township.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. BAIRD lived in Jackson Township for perhaps one year. In December, 1880, they moved to the farm on which they still reside, in the eastern portion of Jefferson Township near Eagle Creek. Mrs. BAIRD is a lady of culture and taste, and a member of the M. E. Church. He is a man of industrious habits and the owner of seventy-one acres of land.

Page 233: James BAIRD, farmer, P. O. Russellville. Among the pioneer families of Brown County, there are but few whose names are so well known and who are as highly esteemed by the community as are the BAIRDS.

George BAIRD, the pioneer, was born June 15, 1771, in Pennsylvania. His father, William BAIRD, was an old Revolutionary soldier, who settled in Virginia some time after the close of the war. On September 15, 1796, were celebrated the nuptials of George and Jane (MOORE) BAIRD. By this union there were born ten children, five in Virginia, and subsequently five in Ohio. In the year 1803-04, they emigrated to Ohio, and settled in what is now known as Jefferson Township, Brown Co., Ohio, on 300 acres of land, about where James, their son, at present resides.

He built his log cabin and prepared himself for the more arduous task of clearing the land. He served during the war of 1812 for about thirty days, but was not under fire.

About the year 1817, he built a large two-story hewed-log house, which was more commodiouS and better adapted to the wants of his fami Iy. The family continued to occupy this building till about the year 1835-36, when James, his son, the subject of thiS sketch, built a new brick house near the site first occupied by the log cabin, in which house he remained for perhaps two years, when he died in December, 1838, his wife having died in October, 1820. The cares of the household were then devolved upon his daughters, who performed them for the greater part of the time.

His daughter Elizabeth, being the last one at home, having married, he was obliged to substitute in her stead foreign domestics. This state of affairs existed until the marriage of his son James, whose wife then took charge of affairs. Mr. BAIRD was of a kind and generous nature, given to hospitality, especially to the poor and needy. In his transactions with his fellow-men, he ws always strictly honorable, and his death was the occasion of considerable sorrow and regret.

James BAIRD, our subject, was born in June, 1809, in Brown County, Ohio, and received but a limited education. On November 8, 1832, he married Miss Martha BOWAR, born November 28, 1813, near Ripley, Ohio, a daughter of Robert and Sarah BOWAR, who emigrated from Pennsylvania to Brown County, Ohio about 1812. After remaining in the neighborhood of Ripley for a shor time, they (Mr. BOWAR and family) moved into the neighborhood of Pilson's Mill, where they became permanently settled. Mr. BAIRD claims that from the time his wife's parents settled there to the present time, "They have not lived one-half mile apart." To them have been born nine children ... William S., George N., Robert B. (deceased, who enlisted in the Seventieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the war of the rebellion, and participated in the battle of Pittsburg Landing, in the attach on Fort McAllister, and subsequently was with

Sherman in his grand march to the sea), Lewis W. (Who enlisted in the Seventieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and continued in the serviceuntil the close of the war, and participated in the attack on Fort McAllister; carried into the ramparts, facing shot and bayonets, the first Union flag), James A., Albert M., Sarah E., Jesse L., and Jane (deceased, who married William B. CAREY). Mr. CAREY was a soldier in the Union Army, was captured by the rebels in Virginia and thrown into different Southern prisons unti I he was sent to Andersonville, where he met with the fate of starvation. Mr. BAIRD has also reared three of his grandchildren from infancy---George B., Ella C., Carey (deceased) and William C., son of James A. BAIRD.

Mr. BAIRD states that since the new house has been built on the homestead, it has never been left a night without an occupant, which is an uncommon occurrence. He has served as Trustee of Jefferson Township, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church, in which denomination he has acted as Elder for perhaps thirty-nine years. He received from his father eighty acres of land as his inheritance, and by his industry, perseverance and good management had at one time about three hundred acres. He is still hale and hearty, of a pleasant nature and very entertaining.

Page 233 (Jefferson Township): George BAIRD, farmer, P. O. Russellville. John BAIRD, father of our subject, was born in May, 1807, in what is now known as Jefferson Township, Brown Co., Ohio. His parents were George and Jane BAIRD, who were among the pioneers of this county, and of whom we have made mention in another portion of this work. John was reared to manhood on a farm and received but a rudimentary education. In May, 1832, he married Mary FENTON, daughter of Jeremiah and Rosanna FENTON. This union has been blessed with eight children seven of whom are stililiving--Jeremiah, George, Sarah A.,

Rosanna, John J., Mary and Rufus T. He has been very successful during life as an agriculturist, and is at present residing with the subject of this sketch, his wife having died in 1874. George BAIRD, our subject, was born in March, 1835, in Jefferson TownShip, Brown Co., Ohio. In his youth, he had not the opportunities of obtaining more than a rudimentary education. Having selected Miss Mary SMITH, born September 1842, for his betrothed, their nuptials were celebrated in April, 1873. She is the daughter of John S. and Ruth SMITH. This union has been blessed with three children, two of whom are still living. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church at Russellville, a Republican and the owner of about 463 acres of land. He resides about two miles nearly due east of Russellville on his farm, which is in a high state of cultivation, and pleasantly located.

Page 274 (Jackson Township): George N. BAIRD, farmer, P. O. Russellville, was born in April, 1843, in Jefferson Township, Brown Co., Ohio. His parents are James and Martha BAIRD, of Jeffersonville Township, whose sketch appears in this work. He was reared to man's estate on a farm, and received but a limited education. In November, 1880, he married Miss Stella DAY, daughter of Ellis and Miriam DAY. This union has been blessed with three children, one of who is still living---Angy N. BAIRD.

Mr. BAIRD is a man of good judgement, agreeable, a liberal supporter of all enterpriSes which tend to the rise and progress of the county and the elevation of humanity. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church at Russellville, a Republican, and the owner of eighty-eight acres of land located in the southern portion of Jackson Township.

WILSON-BAIRD HISTORY. -Frank J. Baird of Kansas City 1838-1895,· by Frank J. Shepherd, (ca 1940), pp. 82-85.

CHAPTER XII FRANK J. BAIRD

Frank J. BAIRD was christened Josiah Franklin BAIRD, but he took a fancy to change in the name to Frank J. BAIRD, this is what he was familiarly called in the business world. He was the eleventh child of John HILL BAIRD and Catharine DEAN, and was born in the old home East of Georgetown, Ohio, on May 14, 1838. His mother died when he was two and a half years old, and his father fortunately married Margaret GARRETT, who proved a most excellent step-mother to his children. In 1846 the family moved to Illinois to establish a new farm home.

The BAIRDS were of the old Presbyterian stock who believed in bringing up their children in the way they should go. Not only in religious matters but also in regard to habits of industry, thrift, and the wise use of their time. To them, idleness was a crime. Frank, like the rest of the children, was taught that he had an individual part in forwarding the welfare of the family, according to his ability. Not only was he faithful in this regard, but he soon discovered that the more education he obtained, the easier it would be for him to reach the position in life he desired to hold. The practice of law attracted him, and he determined to fit himself for the work. In a letter to his nephew, Will F. BAIRD, he states the case:

"With a hundred and twenty-one dollars in my pocket, I started to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor to obtain the education that would give me the start I was bound to have. To supplement my cash, I sawed wood, rang bells, swept floors, and did other things to help out.

frank J. BAIRD

Believe me, boy! It was no snap, and sometimes it went against the grain- stung my pride. It was a good thing for me, and I realize it now. It taught me to depend on myself for the things

wanted****"

He was only part way through his legal course when the great Civil War broke out. He, like so many other farm boys, was thoroughly loyal and patriotic, and did not want to be drafted for service, but dropping his books, he enlisted in the 138th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was made First Lieutenant of his company. He served until the end of the war, and when he was mustered out of service, again took up his study of the law, and was graduated with honors, and was admitted to the bar in 1866.

During the time he was in service he had been in and through a straggling frontier town called Kansas City and was impressed with its location. He realized that now the war was over, the great West would settle up rapidly. The Great Transcontinental Railroads were pushing out toward the Pacific Coast; Soldiers were taking up claims out on the prairies; the government was aiding its settlement by tree-claims, pre-emption and tree-claims, homestead rights. The railroads had been granted immense tracts of land by the government as an aid to road bUilding, and these were offered to actual settlers at low prices. And a land-hungry people were thronging into this Western country. Long strings of canvas-topped wagons loaded with settlers and their farming equipments were to be seen on all roads bound for the land of free farms. It was the era of the greatest land boom ever seen in America.

To Frank BAIRD, there seemed every indication that Kansas City would have a phenoinal {sic} growth and become a great city. And to those who got in "on the ground floor", there was the opportunity-golden opportunity to acquire wealth, power and distinction. With his diploma to practice law in his pocket, he hastened out there to open an office. Lady Luck smiled on him, and soon he had all the business he could attend to. BAIRD was a genial fellow who made friends easily, and attracted to himself the better class of young men who had similar lofty aims. He made money in those first years in the new city, so he wrote the friends "back East"-more than his wildest dreams ever pictured. His faith in the city's future growth grew stronger, and he began to invest his savings in real estate carefully selected, thus laying the foundation for the foundation for the fortune that was later to be his.

He soon became known not only as an able attorney, but as a safe, sane business man whose judgement was to be depended on. He was thoroughly honest, and the financiers looking for safe investments, placed a lot of confidence in his judgement, and were willing to back what ever he advised. He became a power in the business world of the City.

Frank J. BAIRD

In 1870 he married Miss Sadie M. HUGHS, a relative of the Clay family so long prominent in Kentucky's political life, in the ante-bellum days. Her father went broke when the Civil War liberated his slaves, and his daughter, who had never been taught to work, had to depend on the good education she had acquired for her support. She, too, saw the opportunities in the rapidly growing city, and came out to obtain a position as a teacher in the public schools, a position she successfully filled.

It was her brave acceptance of Fate's handicap, and her skilful [sic] over-coming of it, as well as her charming personality that attracted the attention of the rising young attorney, and led to a friendship that ended in marriage. To them were born two daughters: Blanche [BAIRD] who married Ralph SEYMOUR, the inventor of the Double Folding Printing Press. She died in 1901, and is buried in the Fairmount Cemetary [Sic] in Kansas City, by the side of her parents. She had no children. Myrtle [BAIRD], the other daughter, married John CHISHOLM. He did not live very long, and neither did she, although she left one son whose whereabouts are now unknown.

Frank J. BAIRD died June 16,1895, and his wife died two years later. His death came suddenly after but a few days illness, from an old malady contracted during his Army life, and was a great shock to his friends and business associates, many of whom had not known he was sick until after he was gone. This was especially true of the members of the Second Presbyterian Church of which he and his wife were faithful and active members of long standing. He was also a member of the Loyal Legion, the Southwestern Alumni of Michigan University, Kansas City State Bank, Kansas City Grand Army Post, and many other civic organizations.

His funeral, held from his late home 1742 Jefferson Street, was largely attended. More than two hundred business men marched in a body in the procession that bore him to the cemetary[sic], as a tribute of their respect for the man who for thirty years, had been an outstanding citizen and leader.

He was largely responsible for the Adams family and other capitalists investing in Kansas City real estate. Also in the building of the Union Pacific Railway, and the Hannibal Bridge. He was a liberal contributor to the Public Library and Reading Rooms, as well as donating liberally to the needy. The hospitals of the city were also among the objects of his beneficience [sic].

He had an appreciation of the beautiful in art, and while in Europe, purchased many pieces of sculpture by the great masters, and donated them to the city. To his nephew said: "I owe a debt of gratitude for my success to the Lord, and feel I shall be held responsible to Him for the manner in which I use it."

Frank J. BAIRD

At the time of hiS death he owned the Baird Office building at Sixth and Wyandotte that housed nearly a hundred offices, and at the time the largest building in the city. He was a man of plain tastes, fond of the good things of life, but was not ostentatious. He believed in the ethical things of life, and was very approachable. There was nothing aristocratic about him.

So ended the life of a man born in a log house. He came up through the ranks, made a fortune unaided, every dollar of which was honestly gotten, and who left the work with a clean record, honored and respected by all who knew him.

Letter from William Craig, Washington Academy Rockbridge, VA to His Sister, Sarah, of Lincoln

County, Kentucky 1804

Letter provided by Daley Craig

"Washington Academy Rockbridge County, Virginia June 29th, 1804"

Dear Sister, I now sit down to inform you that I am well at present, hoping that you all the rest of

my relations are well. On Friday the day after I wrote last to my Father I went to Uncle Wm. BEARD's who after they found out who I was used me very kindly. Grandady [sic] and Grany [sic] were there who are well as could be expected. Grany [sic] expresses a great desire to see you, inquiring your size and many other qualities and indeed she seems a very kind old lady.

On Sunday I went to the stone meeting house to the sacrament which appeared no more than a common meeting. There were some very handsome people and some very much on the reverse. From there I went home with Uncle Wm. CRAIG and he has two very smart daughters, Sally and Peggy. His son was from home and I did not see him. On the next day I went away to Swift Run Gap and on Wednesday as I returned I met with Cousin Samuel CRAIG, James CRAIG's son who took me along with him to a cave where a company of youngsters had walked to see the curiosity, and indeed it was a curiosity. Three of his sisters were there and his brother George. Uncle Wm. CRAIG's two daughters, Cousin James CRAIG and hiS sister Gracy. A fine merry company. When we were sufficiently satisfied with Viewing the curiosity we returned to Uncle's mill where we were all weighed in the scales and they took to pondering one another and before they quit they threw the flour on by double handfuls and when we left the mill we were nearly all of a couler. From there we went to the house and took dinner. There the girls took it in their heads to walk over to Alexander HENDERSON's store about a mile to eat raisins and drink wine so they on with their scoops (straw scoops being the fashion here) and away we went, got what we went for in abundance and returned home in better spirits, having great diversion crossing the river in the flat.

Cousin Sally says dady [sic] was no as good as his word for he promised to send you in here and for her to go home with you. On the next day I left them. Uncle Wm. BEARD came up with me and we staid [sic] all night at Uncle John BEARD's. His eldest daughter Sally was married last spring to an industrious young Dutchman who owns a planatation [sic] close by them. His father lives near Winchester and is said to be able. Excuse my bad writing as well as the nonsense that I have written. Tell the young ladies of my acquaintance that I have not forsaken Kentucky altogether. Write to me when you are to be married. Being tired scribbling, I shall conclude. Write to me when you get this-and I am Your most humble servant SI William CRAIG

+FAMILY LETTERS (CON'T):

Daley Craig's Thoughts on the Above Letter Daley CRAIG, PO Box 6156, Charlottesville, VA 22904

William CRAIG who wrote the letter to his sister Sarah dated June 29th, 1804 had just finished his first of three years at Washington Academy, formerly Liberty Hall Academy, later relocated and named Washington College and now Washington and Lee University. He traveled by horse the 45 or so miles from Lexington, Virginia to Augusta County, Virginia [Virginia then extended from the Blue Ridge mountains to the Mississippi River] unannounced, of course because of lack of communicative technology. He" went to Uncle William BEARD's, who after they found out who I was used me very kindly." William BEARD was brother to William CRAIG's mother, Elizabeth BEARD CRAIG. She and John CRAIG, William's father, were both born in Augusta County and their children were born there. John CRAIG, William's father, went to Kentucky in 1790 following his father, John, Sr. who went thee in 1775 with 2 sons and a herd of cattle. William BEARD's parents were at the house as indicated in the letter. They were Edward and Mary BELL BEARD who were born in Ireland and lived at "Beard's Ford", believed to be on the North River. Edward "Granddaddy" died nearly two years later on April 27, 1806. His wife "Granny" died earlier on October 19, 1805. At the North River [several miles north of the William BEARD house] there exists a road named "Samuel Beard's Road". This may be the location of John BEARD referred to in the letter. The William BEARD homeplace was and still is a mile or two directly north of New Hope on the "Staunton Road" at the southeast corner of the "Crossroads", a mile or so south of Piedmont. The area was in 1864 to be in the middle of the Battle of the Piedmont, and the William BEARD house was occupied by the military - maybe both sides.

William refers to going to the Stone Meeting House, which is now called the Old Stone Church or Augusta Stone Church, site of much Valley of Virginia history, beginning with its formation by Rev. John CRAIG [no kin in this county to William, but from the same place and time in Ireland as William's ancestors] about 1745. William next went home with Uncle William CRAIG who lived a couple miles north from William BEARD's and just west of Mt. Meridian. William was grandson of the immigrants William and Janet CRAIG who had sons Robert, James and John. William CRAIG whom he visited was the stone of James. The author of the letter, William Daniel CRAIG, descended from John and John Jr., his father. He identifies the "two very smart daughters Sally and Peggy- but not the son away from home. The son was James.

The writer next went to Swift Run Gap, which is about 25 miles away up the Blue Ridge Mountain. He must have been adventurous and enjoyed riding horseback as each way would be a nice day's ride, the ride up because of the anticipation of the Sights, and the ride back easier on the horse.

Volume 9- The BAIRD Brigade- Page 35

.FAMILY LETTERS (CON'T):

William the writer met with his cousin Samuel whose father James was the brother of the writer's father John Jr. They visited the cave, now called Wever's for the name of the discoverer, which had recently been discovered. They were accompanied by Samuel's three sisters and brother George. Uncle William CRAIG's two daughters Sally and Peggy [the very smart daughters] and by cousin James CRAIG and hiS sister Gracy.

James and Gracy were children of George, son of James the son of immigrants William and Jeannette [sic] CRAIG. Gracy was to soon after die in her teens. Maybe that helped inspire William the writer to be a doctor.

They next visited Uncle James mill, which is on the South River at Harriston and now referred to as Patterson's mill or "Willow Grove". The mill race is still standing, and evidence is that the mill survived the Civil War, though many did not.

From thee they went to Alexander Henderson's Store about a mile away and across the South River from the mill. I do not yet know where the store was.

William the writer and his uncle, William BEARD, went to the homeplace of John BEARD. I believe thiS was on the North River, several miles Northwest of the Mt. Meridian area.

Maurice LEACH checked with Washington & Lee University to see if any William CRAIG records could be found. In Special Collections, the Library Assistant found in the October 1804 trustee minutes references to a "CRAIG" academic record. He had classes in arithmetic, Euclid, and surveying. The results of the 16 Oct 1804 examination for the whole school are available.
