1. Sunshine on LeithDon’t listen to clichés about Scottish weather. With lessrainfall than Rome, Frankfurt or New York, your chances ofenjoying a lovely, clear day in Scotland’s capital city arepretty good.

2. Half Hangit MaggieEdinburgh even has ghost stories without ghosts! MaggieDickson was executed for concealing the death of her childin 1724. But on the way to be buried she sat straight up inher casket and it was decided that being already officiallydead, she couldn’t be hanged again. She went free and livedfor another 30 years. A pub bearing her name can be foundin the Grassmarket.

3. Spit on the HeartOutside St. Giles Cathedral is the Heart of Midlothian whichmarks the spot of an old public execution site. Local folkloresays that to spit on the heart brings good luck.

4. Crowded HouseThe wonder of Edinburgh’s festivals is well known. But didyou realise that the city’s population more than doubles overthe month of August to over 1 million?

5. Name that cityAs well as ‘Athens of the North’, Edinburgh has earned itselfa few other nicknames over the years. The most famous is‘Auld Reekie’, which translated from Scots means ‘OldSmoky’, and is a reference to the dense chimney smokecaused by industrialisation and closely built houses. Now,the air is fresh and clear and an abundance of parks meansEdinburgh is surprisingly lush.

6. Biscuit brainchildsDolly the Sheep, chequebooks, even the rules of golf –Edinburgh is a hotbed of invention. A lesser known – but noless loved – discovery that the city can also lay claim to is thehumble digestive biscuit, created by bakers McVitie andPrice in 1892.

7. Say cheeseA recent survey found Edinburgh Castle is Scotland’s mostpopular spot for a selfie. Ranked in the top 40 of worldwideselfie hot spots, Edinburgh Castle was just behind the likes ofthe Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House and the Empire StateBuilding.

8. Write hereAs the first UNESCO City of Literature, there’s many a story totell, none better than the fact that JK Rowling both startedand finished the Harry Potter series in Edinburgh. The finallines were penned in room 552 of the Balmoral Hotel in thecity centre.

9. Site for sore eyesWhen walking through the city, from New Town to Old, takea look at the city’s stunning architecture. Together, theconstituent parts of Edinburgh’s city centre make up the city’sUNESCO World Heritage site.

Samhuinn31 October 2019The Samhuinn celebra�on takes place on top of Calton Hill on the samenight as Hallowe’en. The story follows the overthrowing of Summer byWinter, with a drama�c stand-off between the Summer and Winter Kings.This is overseen by the Cailleach, a Cel�c representa�on of the Goddess, orDivine Hag, who ul�mately decides each King’s fate and ushers in the coldermonths. As a counterbalance to the Beltane Fire Fes�val, Samhuinn FireFes�val marks the transi�on from Summer to Winter with mixture offireplay, drumming, and immersive performances - not to be missed.

Doors Open Days28-29 September 2019Doors Open Day is your chance to explore some of Edinburgh’sarchitecturally and culturally significant buildings - all for free. Edinburgh Riding of the Marches15 September 2019The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches was formed in 2008 to promote andfacilitate the annual re-enactment of the Edinburgh Riding of the Marchesand all its associated tradi�ons, commemora�ng Randolph Murray’s returnwith the tragic news of the defeat of the Sco�sh Army at the Ba�le ofFlodden. The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is one of Edinburgh’s largestpublic events, taking place every September. 300 horses and their riders willtraverse the ancient Royal Mile - watched by hundreds of spectators.
