however, is not enough to makenecessary' repairs, much lessimprovements. So, the houseshave been slowly deteriorating.
The committee is nowassembling a list of what shouldbe done, and trying to establishpriorities and gather costestimates. They expect to make areport to president Christy bythe end of second term. Christywill look at their list, and decidehow much should be done. Mostof the work should be done thissummer. Some of the work maycontinue into the succeedingsummer, however.
The committee membersseemed to have dissinlilar viewsof what should be done. Dr.Kavanaugh, chairman of thecommittee, feels that repaintingthe walls, carpeting the floors, installing adequate lighting andimproving the kitchens are thehighest priority. He feels thatsome of the work should bedone by students..
Jim Mayer feels that re.doingfreshman rooms, carpeting allrooms and hallways, andadequate lighting throughout, arethe most critical. Secondly, hewould redo the kitchens andkitchenettes. He would like twofull kitchens in each house, and

the administration has finallystarted doing something aboutstudent housing. Last Dec. 19,acting president Christyappointed a presidentialcommittee to look into studenthousing conditions.. Thecommittee members are Dr.Ralph Kavanaugh (chairman). Dr.Jim Mayer, Robert Gang, EricKaler, Phil Rector, SheilaCrewther, and Jim Minges. Theformation was prompted by astream of complaints fromstudents, parents, faculty andtrustees.
Much of the credit for thecommittee belongs to Dr. JimMayer. master of studenthousing. He has been trying toimprove things since January1976. He arranged for tours ofthe houses by the facultywomen's dub, the trustees, andothers. According to Dr. Mayer, this caused a "groundswell ofopinion."
Part of the reason for theprevious neglect is that peopleassumed that the money spenteach summer ($20,000 to$80,000 depending on thesummer and who you are talkingto), was sufficient to keep thehouses in repair. This sum,

In the panel discussion, afterthe film, Ms Wertmullerexplained that although the mmportrays the male subjugating thefemale, she is a feminist. She saidthat the film was not meant toillustrate a sexual battle, butrather apolitical theme. She saidthat the bourgeoisie, representedby the wealthy woman, alwaysfalls in love with the third world, represented by the poor sailor,Carunchio. Ms Werimulleraccepted questions from theaudience. She spoke through aninterpreter, asking Ms Wertmuller'questions in her native Italian.
When asked what makes herfIlms so popular, she replied "Idon't know".

Lots of companies can give you a job that says engineer. But how many give you a real engineer's responsibility?
In the Navy, you get it fast. Our nuclear propulsion officers start with a year of graduate-level engineering, at fullpay. Then on to nuclear-powered submarines, with hands-onresponsibility immediately. They travel the world, earn$24,000 after four years, and get top benefits.
If that sounds like your kind ofopportunity, speaktoyourlocal Navy OfficerPrograms Officer or send your resume to:

ed.,As one of tlle "other house
presidents" who supposedlythought of ways to keep peoplefrom moving off campus lastyear, I would like to say somethings in response to "KennethD. Duncan's" article in lastweek's Tech.
The house that was losingmany of its people last year wasindeed having problems, largelybecause of the loss of a few keymembers, who made significantcontributions to the character ofthe house. However, I can notview this particular instance andpicture a major trend, at leastnot without present information, and I certainly wouldn't call it a"mass exodus." Better, I think,to call it statistical fluctuation, atleast for the moment.
Lloyd House has recently lost.quite a few on-campus members, particularly sophomores. Whilethe poeple who are moving offcampus are generally well-known

Last Monday, the ASCIT BOD decided, after somediscussion, to cutback on the cost of the upcoming BODdinner. Ratherthan pay for each BOD member's dinner atThe Boniventure, at about $20 a shot, the BOD nowintends only to subsidize, at $5 a person, a dinner at theNorth Woods Inn. This is a mUyh more reasonable thing forthe BOD to do. \
When a vote was taken, it was unanimously in favor ofthe new plan, albeit the votes of the IRC Chaitman and thePresident seemed to have been given grudgingly. During themeeting, it was brought out that the IRC managed to spendabout $200, on ten people, during its dinner at TheChronicle last Friday. In view· of the large budget excesswhich paid for the dinner, it was suggested by several BODmembers that the IRC budget could stand to be cutback inthe coming year. This seems to me to be a very good idea, and 1 hope it is remembered when it comes time to makethe new ASCIT budget.

To the Editor:Most people would agree that
it is considerate not to tellsomeone the plot of a movie heis planning to attend, and yourrecent review of CloseEncounters of the Third Kind isvery considerate. Most peopledisagree with a movie review ongrounds of personal opinion, notfact; in this respect, this reviewsets first. To set the recordstraight the following correctionsshould be noted:
