Congratulations to Ted Dion, the winner of this quarter’s Tidewell Volunteer Difference Award.

Ted was surprised on April 23 by Tidewell volunteer staff and colleagues at the Port Charlotte Hospice House. An Army veteran and retired firefighter, Ted is a host at the hospice house and has performed more than 25 pinnings for the Tidewell Honors Veterans program. He has been a volunteer for almost a year but already has contributed more than 250 hours of service.

Following is the Volunteer Difference nomination from Tidewell volunteer staff:

Ted is always willing to go above and beyond for Tidewell patients and families. He is a retired fireman and was in the U.S. Army. He is a host at the Port Charlotte hospice house and always is willing to stop and spend time with anyone who needs it. He performed a veteran’s pinning ceremony for a patient who came in and was actively dying who had been homeless and made the family feel better about their father. He assisted the CNAs with a very heavy and difficult patient one day. He came back to see a wife and patient that he had pinned because the patient had only responded when Ted did the pinning. He had been seeing a home team patient for socialization for a while and Ted came to the hospice house when he heard that he had transferred in and sat with him when he was agitated then came back the same evening and

sat with him as he was dying since the family could not get a flight in until the next morning. He is always positive and smiling, but also very caring and compassionate and makes such a difference for all that he has contact with whether it is a patient, family or even staff. I can’t imagine anyone more deserving of this award then Ted.

Want to help raise funds for Tidewell?Do you know a great company that could support Tidewell or have a group of friends, a tennis team, book club or other social group interested in fundraising for our mission? Third-party events are a great way to support Tidewell and get the word out about our services. This could be anything from your favorite store offering a portion of sales as a donation on a particular day, an organized sporting event among friends to raise money, a fishing tournament,

cook-out and more! It’s a great way to get creative and raise money for Tidewell. If you’re interested in facilitating a third -party fundraiser on Tidewell’s behalf, or have a connection to a local business that may be interested, please contact Lorraine Constantino in Tidewell’s Philanthropy Department at (941) 552-7546 or [email protected].

“It’s a great way to get creative and raise money”

Tappercise, a dance and variety show troupe in Venice, raised more than $60,000 for Tidewell Hospice during the 22-year run of their annual performances. Choreographer Sharon deMarc created the show in honor of her mother, who passed away under Tidewell’s care.
