Crescent – the phases where the moon is less than half light.

Gibbous – the phases where the moon is more than half light

Waxing essentially means "growing" light

Waning means "shrinking“ light

Rhyme time – Waxing moons are growing bright, waning

moons have shrinking light!

• The daily rise and fall of Earth’s waters on the shorelines

• Caused by the gravitational pull between the Earth, Moon, and Sun

Spring Tides

–Occur twice a month, when the Sun

and Moon are lined up

–This combined gravity creates the STRONGEST pull on the water

All in a LINE

All in a LINE

The SUN, EARTH, and MOON are all in line!

Neap Tides

–Occur twice a month, when the Sun and Moon form right angles with Earth

–This combined gravity creates the WEAKEST pull on the water

The SUN and Earth are in line but the MOON

is at a right angle!

• Is kept in orbit by Earth’s gravity

• Is visible ONLY because it reflects sunlight – DOES NOT generate its own light!

• No atmosphere = impacted by many meteoroids

• As Earth revolves around the Sun (365 ¼ days), the Moon revolves around the Earth (28 days)

• The phase of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon is facing Earth

What is today’s phase of the moon?

Moon, Earth, and Sun as viewed from ABOVE our Solar System

Let’s make a moon spinner!

Step 1 Draw arrows curving toward the left. This shows the direction the spinner turns!

Step 2 Cut out the circle by cutting along the dotted lines. CUT OUT ALL OF THE TRIANGLE!

Step 3 Write the word “WANING” on the left side and “WAXING” on the right side of your paper

Step 4 Draw a picture of the SUN at the bottom of the page (under the NEW MOON)

Step 5 a. Push the brass brad

through the circle cutout

b. Push it through the moon phases sheet

c. Fold the straight pieces down
