Tips to Save Money on Pet-Care CostsBy Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw’s Corner:It seems the cost of pet food has risen, among other things. I have to feed my cat “Barney” a special diet that includes canned food I can only get from my vet. Is there any way I can cut costs on items like this without risking Barney’s health? -- May K., San Diego

Dear May:There are always ways to find savings in our everyday budgets as well as pet care-related costs. Talk to your veterinarian e brand of pet food Barney has to eat -- is there a comparable product that doesn’t cost so much? If you don’t get a satisfactory answer, try searching for the pet food by name on the Internet. In addition to the food manufacturer’s website where you may find coupons or other places where you can buy it, you may find forums where pet owners share information that could help you save money.Consumer Reports magazine recently published a series of articles on cutting pet-care costs. The report can be found in the August 2011 issue, or online at http://

www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2011/august/money/pet-costs/overview/index.htm.Here is a brief summary of its tips:• If you’re buying “premium” pet food, look around for comparable products that cost less, buy in bulk at a “big box” store, or look at store brands.• Concerned about veterinary costs? Shop around -- check with other vets for their service rates.• The vet is no longer the only source of pet medicines: Walgreens, Giant/Eagle, Kroger and Target either have or are testing pet prescription programs.• Keep up with preventive care: Schedule an annual checkup and vaccinations at the vet, and perform home health maintenance like feeding a healthy diet, brushing teeth, etc.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

NATURAL GAS: 3 Steps to Understanding You’re Saving Options

The weather is great this time of the year however; lower winter temperatures and higher heating cost are just around the corner. Energy markets have become more volatile and complicated in recent years and many factors affect market prices. You can’t control the market, but you can manage your risk.How?1. Know your options.Michigan has 11 Gas Utility companies and 19 Alternative Gas Providers. Research each provider’s rates and terms to see what fits your needs.

2. Decide the best pricing.Variable Cost Pricing - Natural gas is a traded commodity on the NIMAX exchange. Pricing no matter how you purchase gas varies daily depending on the national supply and demand. This is the most common pricing method.Fixed Rate Pricing – If you are served by Seller on a Fixed Year Price your monthly price for natural gas supply will remain the same for the Initial Term of the agreement, unless an introductory offer applies. The fixed price in many instances is slightly higher than normal in and effort to remain stable if the market rates rise.

3. Choose the way to buy gas.Choice program – Seeks more predictable energy costs with a fully integrated supply through the current utility in order to make buying your natural gas simpler and more predictable.Transportation program – Transport or Distribution is the process of buying your natural gas from a third-party supplier, instead

AUGUST BABIES (continued):

• Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, turns 81 this month. Before he was an astronaut, he served as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying 78 missions over Korea at the ripe old age of 21. After leaving the Navy at 22, he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering and became a test pilot. His first space mission was in 1966 on Gemini 8. The Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong’s first words upon the craft’s landing were, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” As he stood at the bottom of the ladder before his first step, he said, “I’m going to step off the LEM now.” Then came his legendary words as he set his foot on the lunar surface, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong spent 2.5 hours exploring the moon. Shortly after the mission, he announced that he would not fly in space again and became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

• The 7-foot, 1-inch-tall (2.2-m) Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain almost didn’t make it to the NBA. As a delicate child, he nearly lost his life to pneumonia and missed an entire year of school due to the illness. After his recovery, he didn’t care for basketball, but excelled in track and field. By the time he was 10 years old, he was already 6 feet (1.83 m) tall, and when he entered high school, he stood at 6 feet, 11 inches (2.1 m). Chamberlain played a year for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958, with a $50,000 annual salary, before heading to Philadelphia with the NBA in 1959. In 1962, he set the long-standing record of scoring 100 points in a game, helping Philly triumph over the New York Knicks 169 to 147. When he retired, he had 31,419 career points.

of your local distribution company (LDC). The alternative provider would arrange delivery of that gas to the local distribution system, and your LDC will deliver the gas to your place of business. The time is now, start doing your homework because natural gas customers across the country will be paying almost 10 percent more for natural gas starting this fall.Utility providers have announced an increase in its annual adjustment to gas supply charges, effective this fall that will raise the typical residential and commercial bill by 9.9 percent in most states. “The primary reason for this change is an increase in the charges the company must pay to bring the gas supply to our service area, combined with a slightly higher predicted gas cost for the upcoming yea” says a spokes person for Natural Gas.

AUGUST BABIES (continued):

• If you haven’t read the work of American poet Katharine Lee Bates, you’ve certainly sung it. While visiting Colorado’s Pikes Peak in 1893, the 34-year-old professor of English at Wellesley College was so moved by the view, she wrote a poem entitled “America,” which was published two years later. A church organist and choirmaster, Samuel A. Ward, composed the music, and in 1910, it was released as “America the Beautiful.”

• The words to another patriotic song were penned by an August baby, Francis Scott Key. During the War of 1812, as British troops invaded Washington, D.C., Key, the city’s 35-year-old district attorney, stood watching the attack on Fort McHenry in the midst of the Battle of Baltimore. After the smoke from the bombarding cleared, the American flag could be seen waving above the fort. On his way back to Baltimore after the battle, he began writing a poem on the back of a letter, words which would later become “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

• Terry Gene Bollea gained fame using the stage name Hulk Hogan. We know him as the star of the World Wrestling Federation, but baseball was his first love. As a high school student, he was considered the best pitcher in the Florida school system, and was being considered for the pros. He majored in business management in college, then, prior to entering the ring, spent 10 years as a professional guitarist in several bands and as a studio musician.

• Film director M. Night Shyamalan was born Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan in India but was raised in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb and educated at a private Episcopal Academy. He was born to a physician father and a physician mother, and his wife is also a doctor, as are nine other family members who are either MDs or Ph.Ds. Noted for movies with a strange twist at the end, he makes a cameo appearance in each film. He cites “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as his own favorite film.

• Melinda French Gates met her future husband while employed by his company, Microsoft. She had earned degrees in computer science and economics from Duke University before going to work at Microsoft, where she participated in developing some of their most celebrated products, Publisher, Encarta and Expedia. Bill and Melinda Gates met in Manhattan at a Microsoft press event. She left her job behind to raise their family.

• There was much more to Jimmy Dean than pork sausage. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s, he became a country singer, moving into variety show television in 1957. He frequently sat in as substitute host of “The Tonight Show.” He moved to acting in the mid-1960s and appeared in the James Bond film, “Diamonds Are Forever.” He and his brother started up the sausage company in 1969, with Dean appearing in the TV commercials. They sold to the Sara Lee Corporation in the ‘80s, but Dean continued in the ads until the corporation dismissed him in 2004, claiming that the 76 year old was too old for the job. When he died in 2010, he was buried in a 9.5-foot-long (2.7-meter), piano-shaped granite mausoleum (a $350,000 item) on his estate on the banks of the James River.

OvERCOMING THE ODDS:TEAM HOYT

As if running a marathon wasn’t difficult enough, the father/son team of Dick and Rick Hoyt has a few added challenges. But this Massachusetts duo is extraordinary, as you’ll soon learn as you read up on their legendary road. • Dick and Judy Hoyt were given disturbing news on the day their son

Rick was born. The baby’s umbilical cord had tangled around his neck, blocking the flow of oxygen. This damaged his brain to the extent that it was unable to send messages to Rick’s muscles, with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Doctors advised the Hoyts to place Rick in an institution, as he would always remain in a vegetative state. However, the Hoyts were encouraged by the fact that the baby’s eyes followed them when they moved and refused to give up on him.

• As Rick grew, although he was confined to a wheelchair, his mother worked with him hours every day, teaching him the alphabet. At age 11, he received a special computer that enabled him to communicate, allowing him to attend public school. Rick received a degree in special education from Boston University at age 31 and went to work at Boston College’s computer lab, developing communication systems for the disabled.

• The father/son running team got its start as a result of another’s disability. Fifteen-year-old Rick heard of a five-mile run slated to benefit a young lacrosse player paralyzed in an auto accident. Rick approached his dad about participating, and, although not a runner, 37-year-old Dick pushed his son the entire distance in his wheelchair, finishing second to last. After hearing Rick comment, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped,” Dick began running on a daily basis. When Rick was in school, Dick added a bag of cement to the wheelchair for his daily runs.

• That first five-mile run was in 1977. By 2010, the pair had competed in more than 1,030 competitive events, including 68 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. The 2009 Boston Marathon marked their 1000th race and the 25th time they had completed that event. Dick Hoyt was 69 years old when he pushed Rick across the finish line!

• The highlight of their athletic career came in 1992 when they spent 45 days running and biking coast to coast across the 3,735 miles (6,011 km) of the United States.

• When competing in triathlons, for the swimming portion, Dick pulls his son in a custom-designed boat with a bungee cord attached to the waist of his vest for two and a half miles (3.86 km). During the cycling segment of the event, Rick rides in a special seat of a custom tandem bike for 112 miles (180.25 km), followed by the running, during which Dick pushes Rick in his wheelchair for 26.2 miles (42.2 km).

• In 2010, Dick’s book “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for his Son” was published, chronicling their family’s efforts to overcome the obstacles of having a child with disabilities. Dick likes to emphasize the fact that even with cerebral palsy, Rick has “accomplished things that would seriously challenge most people.”

Dear Dr. Donohue:My mother is 92 and lives by herself. She’s quite independent and does well. A neighbor takes her grocery shopping, and we take her to other places she has to go. She is extremely set in her ways.I offered to have her home air-conditioned. She won’t hear of it. She says she’s used a fan all her life, and she likes to keep the windows open.I worry about someone her age tolerating heat, and it gets very hot here. Can you provide some arguments that would change her mind? -- D.A.

ANSWER:Your offer to air-condition your mother’s home is a kind gesture and has lots of merit. I’m not about to challenge your mother. She has successfully lived a long life, and I could learn from her. People in the past lived comfortably without air conditioning. Your mother does have to be on guard for dehydration and heat sickness.During hot summers, everyone has to stay well hydrated. Older people’s sense of thirst is not as reliable an indicator of fluid needs as is younger people’s thirst sense. She should sip water all day long, or she can choose any beverage she

likes, including tea. Cooled drinks help keep the body cooled.Evaporation is the chief means the body has for staying cool. Not only is an older person’s thirst sensation blunted, but so is the ability to sweat. Evaporation of sweat cools the body. I don’t mean visible sweat; the sweating I mean is imperceptible but constant. Her fan helps evaporate that imperceptible sweat. However, with a reduced capacity to sweat, older people are at greater risk of suffering from a heat injury.Increased body heat increases the body’s need for oxygen, and that stresses the heart. On very hot days, how about inviting your mother over to your house until the hot spell breaks?

Dear Dr. Donohue:What is Proteus mirabilis, and how does it affect a person? And how is it treated? -- P.P.

ANSWER:Proteus mirabilis is the name of a bacterium, a germ. It’s often implicated in urinary tract infections, but it can cause infections elsewhere, too. Antibiotics eliminate it.

Heat and the ElderlyBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Exercise Isn’t EnoughMany of us exercise for an hour a few times a week and assume that takes care of all our heart needs. Not so, apparently, according to a long-term study. Researchers wanted to know the correlation, if any, between the hours spent watching television and heart disease. A second part of the study looked at the correlation between those TV hours and higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and high cholesterol. What they found is enough to make you toss away the television remote control: Sitting too long is tied to risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. It’s the equivalent of smoking cigarettes in a lot of ways. And even if we get regular exercise, it doesn’t counteract the effects of sitting for long hours.Cardiologist Dr. David Cohen described prolonged sitting as the body going into “storage mode.” The longer you sit, the worse

the risks. For those still working at desk jobs, he suggested delivering messages down the hall instead of sending email, and in general moving as much as possible. Some of Cohen’s suggestions also can apply to those of us who don’t work outside the home: standing up when talking on the telephone, taking stairs when possible, going for walks.Being up and about is good for weight bearing on long bones and building up bone strength. Moving, even just walking, increases blood flow to limbs, brain and heart. As a start, I’m still in favor of taking the batteries out of the television remote control. There would be no idle channel surfing, skimming for programs to watch. Instead we’d consult the show listings, get up, walk across the room and change the channel by hand. And who knows, while we’re up, we might even decide not to sit back down again.

Electrical Safetyby Samantha Mazzotta

Q: What is a GFCI? A contractor we’re considering to renovate our kitchen and

bathroom keeps mentioning them. -- Gayle S., Wheeling, W.va.

A: The letters GFCI stand for “Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter,” a safety feature found in

power receptacles (outlets). GFCI receptacles are required in bathrooms and kitchens by law.

GFCI receptacles detect when electricity is “leaking” and immediately interrupt the electrical circuit (e.g., shut off the power). This is an extremely important safety feature when operating electrical appliances like hairdryers or toasters near water. Even a tiny amount of excess electrical current will trip the circuit.

The receptacles are reset by pressing a button, usually set between the two outlets.

Q: How can I know for sure that a circuit has been turned off to a room or larger area?

-- Jay S., via email

A: Plug a lamp or a radio into an outlet in the room, or turn the overhead light or fan on.

Have a helper stay in the area and tell you when the light or radio turns off. If you aren’t sure or are unable to check for power for any reason, turn off power to the entire home by flipping the main switch or circuit breaker. If you’re unsure the power is completely off (for example, power supplied from a source outside the home) or not confident you can make the repair, contact a licensed electrician.

Newman Relishes Rare DoubleLOUDON, N.H. -- When Ryan Newman crossed the finish line at New

Hampshire Motor Speedway, having won for the 15th time in his Sprint Cup career, he enjoyed a pleasing, but rare, overlap.Newman also started on the pole in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. It was the 47th pole of Newman’s career. Only nine drivers have ever won more. But it was only the fourth time Newman won after starting out front.“We backed up what everybody said we couldn’t back up,” he said. “That was our qualifying effort on Friday. I had won three for 46, now four for 47.“We’ll relish this moment and figure out what we did right so we can keep doing it.”Eight of Newman’s 15 career victories occurred in 2003, when he drove for Roger Penske. He was selected as Cup’s 2002 Rookie of the Year over Jimmie Johnson, who has since won five championships.Newman’s owner and teammate, Tony Stewart, finished second, marking the first time teammates both started and finished 1-2, in the same order, since 1957.

It was a great day for Stewart-Haas Racing driver Ryan Newman in New Hampshire. Newman won the July 17 race from the pole, edging team owner and fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

As the laps wound down, Newman had track position but was low on fuel. He managed to save enough fuel to maintain the lead and hold off Stewart’s charge.“One of the best cars here is the ‘14’ (Stewart). There were a couple other cars at different times, but the ‘14’ was mired back in traffic,” said Newman. “He had to run the wheels off of it to get up to where he had some track position so he could try to run us down.“Fortunately, it stayed green. I was more worried about a yellow coming out with five to go. ‘Do we have enough fuel for a green-white-checkered

(finish)? Usually those things that come and squash us didn’t happen today. Maybe a change of luck for us from that standpoint.”Newman, like Stewart, is a native of Indiana. The 33-year-old South Bend native graduated from Purdue University in 2001 with a degree in vehicle structure engineering. Now eighth in the Sprint Cup point standings, Newman became the 13th driver to win in the season’s first 19 races.

Q: Noah Wyle’s new show, “Falling Skies,” is wonderful. Do you know if it has been renewed

for a second season? -- Theresa D., Pa.

A: You can bet your sweet bippy that TNT has renewed cable’s No. 1 new series for another

season. The alien-invasion saga, which airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), also stars Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton and Drew Roy, and is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg. TNT has ordered 10 episodes for the second season, which will air summer 2012.

Q: I just saw a preview for the remake of “Dallas,” which

excites me to no end. I was wondering if any of the other older nighttime soaps have plans for a remake, like “Falcon Crest” or “Knots Landing”? -- Diedre D., via e-mail

A: So far, no plans are in the works, but of course, you can never

say never. I spoke with Nicollette Sheridan recently, who co-starred as Paige Matheson in the sudster “Dallas” spinoff, and she told me: “I haven’t heard of anyone speaking about doing that. I think ‘Dallas’ was always flashier than ‘Knots Landing.’“’Knots Landing’ was a down-home, simpler, more-pained version. Very real people going through very real situations. But so far, no, I haven’t heard

Brandon Quinn

of any plans for doing that.” For now, you can catch Nicollette in the Hallmark Channel original movie, “Honeymoon for One,” which premieres Saturday, August 13.

Q: I’ve seen commercials for a new police drama on Lifetime, but I didn’t catch the name of the

show. Could tell me about it? -- Derek F., FL

A: You’re thinking of “Against the Wall,” which is part police procedural, part family drama.

It centers on a family of Chicago police officers, and stars Rachael Carpani, Brandon Quinn, Treat Williams and Kathy Baker. The show airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).I spoke with Brandon Quinn, who plays Richie Kowalski, about the show: “The folks at Lifetime are really trying to re-identify themselves, and this show is definitely unlike anything else they have right now. It’s going to put them on the map. I’m really proud of

this show. I would stack it up against any other show on network television right now.”

Q: I absolutely love the series “Bored to Death.” I read

somewhere that Ted Danson is leaving the show to star in another show. Please tell me this isn’t true! -- Hadley F., via e-mail

A: What you heard is only half-true. Ted is indeed going to star in

another show; however, he won’t leave “Bored to Death.” He will remain a series regular on the HBO comedy that also stars Zach Galifianakis and Jason

Schwartzman, and is slated to return for its third season this fall. Ted also has joined the cast of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” where he’ll play the new supervisor for the Las Vegas CSI team. “CSI” returns for its 12th season Sept. 21.
