PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Other Woman” (R) -- Natalie Portman stars as the titular other woman in this melodrama about infidelity, divorce and grief. Portman plays Emilia, a woman who has an affair with Jack (Scott Cohen), the husband of gynecologist Car-olyne (Lisa Kudrow). Jack divorces and marries Emilia, and they have a baby daughter who dies three days later of SIDS. In her grief, Emilia tries to forge a bond between herself and her stepson, but Carolyne does whatever she can to prevent Emilia from “stealing” her son from her too. Gah. This movie is so Chick-Flicky, I actually grew an ovary while writing this synopsis.

“The Hustler” (Unrated) -- Paul Newman’s awe-some performance as pool shark “Fast Eddie” Felson makes “The Hustler” one of the greatest

gritty, noir pictures Hollywood ever cranked out. Now, you can see it in all its high-def glory in this new remastered Blu-ray release. After a crushing defeat at the hands of the legendary Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason in the role of a life-time), Eddie hits the skids. He hooks up with an alco-holic socialite (Piper Laurie) and a ruthless financial backer (George C. Scott), who offers Eddie one last chance at the big money.

“The Mechanic” (R) -- Jason Statham stars in this remake of the classic 1972 Charles Bron-son action flick. Statham plays Arthur Bishop, a successful “mechanic” (hitman) nearing retire-ment, who trains his young replacement (Ben Foster). Although the film has its share of cool action sequences, “The Mechanic” doesn’t have the same Statham-y oomph as his “Crank” or “Transporter” films. “The Mechanic” isn’t a hor-rible film, nor is it as good as the original, but it’s still worth a look.

“The Comancheros” (50th Anniversary Edi-tion) (G) -- John Wayne stars as Big Jake Cut-ter, a Texas Ranger who teams up with gambler Paul Regret (Stuart Whitman) to infiltrate an evil gang of Comancheros -- men who smuggle whiskey and weapons to Comanche Indians in a plot to spur an uprising against God-Fearin’ White Americans Who Are Just Following Their Manifest Destiny.

BRIDGES (continued):• Another pedestrian bridge that provides

amazing views of Singapore is the Helix Bridge, opened in April 2010. It is an ultra-modern, curved double-helix bridge that links the Marina Centre with Marina Bay in view of the Singapore Flyer (Ferris Wheel). Double helix is a term from biochemistry describing “the spiral arrangement of the two complementary strands of DNA.” The bridge is part of a pedestrian loop around the bay that adds to the appeal of the city, especially when lit up at night. Singapore claims this is the first bridge of its kind, however, there are two similar bridges in Seattle and London that were both opened in 2004.

• The world’s largest biotechnology company, Amgen, has a double-helix design skybridge at its massive waterfront campus in Seattle, Washington. The $10 million structure is an architectural gem.

• Also named Helix Bridge is a footbridge at the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal in London. The canal is the longest single canal in the United Kingdom, linking London and Birmingham. This “helix” bridge retracts like a corkscrew to allow for the passage of boats.

• Two other bridges in the Paddington Basin area were installed in 2004 in a large, ongoing redevelopment. The Station Bridge is a space-age glass and steel structure with a semi-

CASTLES (continued):• The famous Tower of London began as a

timber fortress in an earthen enclosure on the north bank of the Thames in London. In 1078, William the Conqueror replaced this timber fortress with a massive stone fortress called the Great Tower. William needed to show his authority and protect his new kingdom.

• In the Middle East, the Crusaders developed great castles with double circuits of curving outer walls and towers to overlook the entire wall. These castles influenced castle building throughout Europe and the British Isles, and the early 13th-century medieval castle was a marriage of Norman, English and Byzantine styles. Two good examples of this are the Château Gaillard on the Seine in France and the Conisbrough Castle in England.

• One of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland was Lethendy Tower, dating back to 1678.

• No two castles are the same. This is due to topography, taste, available materials and the ability of the designer.

• The spiral stairs in castle towers are designed to ascend clockwise in an effort to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use the sword in their right hand.

• At Exeter Castle in England in 1136, the garrison used wine to extinguish fires from a siege.

• The largest inhabited castle in the world is Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom.

• There were once about 5,000 castles in Japan, but today there are only about a dozen original feudal castles left.

Q: I read somewhere that my all-time favorite band, KISS, is back in the studio working on a new album. Is that true? If so, when can we expect some new material from them? -- Rodney G., via e-mailA: It’s true: KISS is working on a new studio al-bum. The band began recording in April, and lead singer/songwriter Paul Stanley told me that they expect to release the album in late fall or early 2012, depending on how things go. He said: “So far, it sounds phenomenal. It’ll be worth the wait, I promise.”In the meantime, Paul also is working with the House Research Institute to help bring awareness to teen hearing loss. Having been born deaf in one ear as well as being a mega rock star, Paul knows all about protecting his hearing, and he wants to help spread the word any way he can. “Hearing loss affects kids, it affects teens, and it affects adults. I tell people, ’If you won’t listen to some-body in a white coat, maybe you’ll listen to some-body in black leather.’”

For more info on how you can protect your hearing, go to earbud.org and soun-drules.org.***Q: Will “Memphis Beat” and “Rizzoli and Isles” be back on TV? I’m already getting tired of all the

summer reality shows! -- Glenda F., via e-mailA: “Memphis” and “Rizzoli” will be back this sum-mer on TNT, starting June 14 and July 11, respec-tively. In fact, TNT recently announced its all-new summer programming slate, which includes two new series, “Franklin and Bash” with Mark-Paul Gos-selaar and Breckin Meyer, and “Falling Skies” with Noah Wylie. Other returning series include “Men of a Certain Age” on June 1, “HawthoRNe” on June 14, “Leverage” on June 26 and “The Closer” on July 11. So get ready for some summertime drama, because TNT is filled to the brim with it!***Q: The Season 1 cliffhanger for Syfy’s “Being Hu-man” had me on the edge of my seat. Please tell me it has been renewed for another season -- I can’t wait to see what they come up with next! -- Jackie H. in MontanaA: The vampire/werewolf/ghost fantasy-drama has been renewed for a second season by the Syfy net-work. In fact, the Season 1 finale shattered ratings records for the network. Although no official Season 2 premiere date has been given, I would assume to look for it come January 2012. ***Q: I was happy to read in your column that “In Plain Sight” would be back on USA for a fourth and fifth season, but I read that star Mary McCormack is preg-nant in real life. How will they handle it on the show? -- Colleen V., Las VegasA: Mary and hubby Michael Morris are expecting their third child together. Mary told People magazine that her pregnancy will be written into the show, so it will be interesting to see what this means for her character, Mary Shannon.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A once-harmonious relationship appears to be hitting some sour notes. Spend some time together to see why things have gone off-key. What you learn might surprise you.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You feel a need to make some changes. Good -- you can do it on a small scale (some new clothes, for example), or go big and redecorate your home and/or office.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Control your tendency toward early boredom. A situation in your life might be taking a long time to develop, but patience pays off. Stay with it.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel that you’re on an emotional roller coaster this week. Don’t fret; just ride it out and let things settle down. A Pisces shows under-standing.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Do something different for once -- compromise. A stubborn stand on an important issue proves counterproductive. You need to be open to new ideas.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend offers advice that you perceive as an act of betrayal. But before you turn against the messenger, pay attention to the message.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A year of riding an emotional pogo stick finally settles down. Use this calmer period to restore frayed relationships and to pursue new opportu-nities.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your words can sting, so be careful how you respond to a friend’s actions. A calm approach could produce some surprising facts.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful about whose secrets you’re being asked to keep. They could impose an unfair bur-den on a straight arrow like you.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While you prefer taking the tried-and-true course in life, be adventurous this week and accept a challenge that can open new vistas.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your strong sense of justice helps you deal with a job- or school-related situation. Stay with your principles. A Sagittarius emerges as a supporter.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You need to build a stronger on-the-job support system to convince doubting colleagues that your innovative proposals are workable.

BORN THIS WEEK: You might not say much, but you’re capable of extraordinary achievements. You are a loyal friend and a devoted family person.

Had a letter asking, "What is one of our great-est actresses, Gena Rowlands, up to these days?" Gena quietly moved on with her life after the 1989 death of her husband of 35 years, John Cassavetes, who directed both her Oscar-nomi-nated films -- "A Woman Under the Influence" and "Gloria" -- and was a pioneer in independent film making. Always watching and waiting for a good script, she's passed on most everything she's read ... until now. When I lunched with her in Palm Springs, Gena told me, "I'm doing a film in Australia, which is a long way to go to make a movie, but 'Last Dance' is so good, I couldn't turn it down! It's about Ulah Lippman, a Holocaust survivor taken hostage by an injured terrorist after a bombing devastates her Melbourne neighborhood. It's told from both their points of view and explains how they got where they are!" (If the title, "Last Dance" sounds familiar, it may be because of the Oscar-winning song "Last Dance" from the 1996 Donna Summer movie "Thank God It's Friday.")Gena has enjoyed her break from movie making by dividing her time between Los Angeles and

Palm Springs with her husband, Robert Forrest. Her son, Nick Cassavetes, had to bow out of di-recting John Travolta's new film, "Gotti: Three Generations" due to a scheduling conflict with another film, "Yellow," to which he was already committed.

Marvel Comics is not wasting any time plan-ning sequels to its new super-hero films "Thor" (due out in May) and "Captain America" (out July 22). Both Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") and Chris Evans ("Captain America") will be getting the big superstar build-up. The advance reviews for "Thor" are very positive for director Kenneth Branagh, the action sequences and Chris Hems-worth. As for Chris Evans, he has proven from his work in the "Fantastic Four" films that he can more than handle the acting required of him. It seems that as life gets more complicated, we need bigger than life super heroes for whom we can cheer.

Hoover Vacuum cleaners has made a bold state-ment against ABC for canceling "All My Chil-

dren" and "One Life to Live." In a move rarely seen by a sponsor, it has pulled all its advertis-ing from ABC. Hoover's VP of Marketing, Brian Kirkendall, admitted that his wife and mother are "both passionate viewers of 'All My Chil-dren' and 'One Life to Live,' as are many of my colleagues here at Hoover."Hoover has set up an email address, [email protected], for soap fans to have their say, which it plans to pass on to ABC. In other words, Hoover told ABC, "We're supposed to suck!"

FLASHBACK TRIVIA

It was the multitalented Pierre Beaumarchais -- born in the 18th century, he was a revolutionary in both France and America as well as a watchmaker, diplomat, musician, spy, inventor, publisher and arms dealer -- who made the following sage obser-vation: “It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.”

If you live in Florida, you probably won’t be sur-prised to learn that there are more than 3,000 dif-ferent species of mosquitoes.

The experts claim that roses don’t really have thorns. Botanically speaking, thorns are consid-ered to be modified branches and are difficult to break off the stem. What roses have are known as prickles, which are just outgrowths of the stem’s outer skin -- and they are, fortunately, much easier to break off.

Statistics show that after having her first child, a woman’s driving sees a measurable improvement.

The name of the great state of Missouri comes from a Native American word meaning “town of

large canoes.”

A man named Henry Budd, before his death in 1862, directed in his will that if his sons, William and Edward, grew moustaches they would receive nothing from his estate. In further discrimination against facial hair, one Mr. Fleming, a British up-holsterer, left 5 pounds in his will to each of his mustached employees, but double that to those who were clean-shaven.

Those who study such things say that the Atlantic Ocean is getting 1.2 inches wider every year.

“My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them in-doors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie water park when they are done.” -- M.E. in Ohio

Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agricul-ture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Don’t delay.

“I have a tip for you. When pouring water into your coffee maker, use a 4-inch funnel, placing it in the tank. It helps to keep from spilling water. Pour slowly!” -- P.T. in Illinois

“To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it out-side for the garbage collector.” -- E.L. in Virginia

“Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove com-partment. They will be there if you need to drive through, and will be handy for picking up din-ner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway!” -- F.D. in Alabama

• The third bridge is truly a marvel. Named the Rolling Bridge, this drawbridge lets boats through in a unique way. The bridge span curls up into an octagonal shape that sits at the water’s edge, resembling a hamster wheel.

• The first pedestrian-only bridge crossing the River Thames in London in more than a century is affectionately called the “Wobbly Bridge.” Two days after its opening in 2000, it was closed due to unexpected lateral vibration. In other words, it wobbled, and people were frightened! Following repairs, it reopened in 2002. Now, it is a popular London walking path. The real name for the bridge is the London Millennium Footbridge.

• Another big city downtown improvement involving a bridge is the 130-foot-long (40 m) Denver Millennium Footbridge that opened in 2002. A distinguishing feature of the bridge is the tilted, 200-foot-tall (61 m) mast that resembles that of a sailboat, a feature that has become iconic to lower downtown Denver. The bridge goes over a railroad easement 25 feet (7.6 m) above street level and is an extension of the popular 16th Street

On May 17, 1943, the crew of the Memphis Belle, one of a group of American bombers based in Britain, becomes the first B-17 crew to complete 25 missions over Europe. A fictional film about the B-17, called “Memphis Belle,” was released in 1990.

On May 21, 1955, unknown singer Chuck Berry paid his first visit to a recording studio and cut “Maybellene.” The song became a No. 1 R&B hit and a No. 5 pop hit. It helped that DJ Alan Freed played the record for two hours straight during his WINS radio show.

On May 22, 1969, legendary actor Paul Newman makes his onscreen racing debut in the action-drama film “Winning.” Newman played Frank Capua, a struggling race car driver who must turn around his fortunes by winning the biggest race of them all -- the Indianapolis 500.

• A bridge with breathtaking views of the Colorado River served as a route for automobiles and trucks for 66 years. The original Navajo Bridge was opened in 1929, replacing a ferry that crossed the river. In 1995, the bridge was restricted to pedestrian use due to the opening of a new, stronger bridge for vehicles. The bridges are side by side and look very similar. They are located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona; a Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center is there as well.

The bridge will support more than 2 million pounds (907 metric tons) and is open to foot traffic as well as automobiles. For those brave enough to walk across, there is a walkway made of 1,292 planks of decking, with about 250 replaced annually. Built in 1929, it is listed on the National Historic Register.

It has been rebuilt several times and is now part of a 27-acre park that is one of the top tourist attractions in British Columbia.

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract3 to 4 drops red food coloring

Kahne Takes Layover With Team Red Bull

This stage of Kasey Kahne's career is tumul-tuous almost by definition. What should be the prime of the 31-year-old's career is a bit muddled, if only for now. Kahne left Richard Petty Motorsports near the end of last season. In 2012, he will join Hendrick Motorsports, re-placing Mark Martin. This year, though, Kahne is taking a one-year ride with Team Red Bull as a teammate of Brian Vickers. What's more, Kahne underwent knee surgery recently to repair a torn meniscus. Still, he planned to participate in the next Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway. Thus far, in the No. 4 Toyota, Kahne has col-lected three top-10 finishes, though a disastrous Talladega showing relegated him to 18th in the Sprint Cup standings. He was 11th four races ago."We've been learning some things," said Kahne. "The cars are a lot different than what we've had in the past ... we've been off every week, but ... we have a great team with Red Bull behind it.

"It's really nice to drive awesome equipment, nice cars. TRD (Toyota Racing Development) does a good job. ... The teams came together re-ally well, really quickly, and I think we can run pretty strong throughout this entire season."It's hard to believe this is actually Kahne's eighth season in NASCAR's premier series. In 2006, he collected six wins and finished eighth in the final standings. The most recent of Kahne's 11 victories occurred in September 2009 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.Understandably, Kahne prefers not to look ahead to next year, when he will join NASCAR's pre-mier team, Hendrick. For now, he wants to con-centrate on his present status at Team Red Bull."It's back to kind of how it should be, I think," he said. "I think racing should be fun. It's a job, but it should be fun, too."It's nice to see all the little things they do to pre-pare. I think my car is probably one of the nicest cars in that whole garage over there. ... I'm just happy to be where I'm at."
