TIDBITS® TAKES A LOOK ATTHE HISTORY OF TOYS

by T.A. Tafoya

There is a good story behind almost every toy. Sometimes the story is as entertaining as the toy itself! This week, Tidbits takes a look at how some toys were invented and how others got their names. • President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt

PICKS OF THE WEEK“I Am Number Four” (PG-13) -- John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is a teenager from another world who has powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal man. Raised by a human in a small Mid-western town, John falls in love with the cutest girl in school, but the romance is cut short when he discovers that there are others like him and a gang of bounty hunters are out to kill him and his kind one-by-one, and in numerical order. John is number four.

“Gnomeo & Juliet” (G) -- The director of “Shrek 2,” producer Elton John and Walt Disney Studios present a new take on Shakespeare’s immortal story of two star-crossed lovers in this animated family film. Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Ju-liet (Emily Blunt) are different colored garden gnomes who live on opposite sides of a backyard fence. Lured by a beautiful orchid, the two meet and immediately fall in love. Their forbidden ro-

mance sparks a war between the two families. Will the two young lovers ever find Happiness? Well, it’s a Disney movie, rated G, so do the math.

“The Royal Wedding: William and Catherine” (Un-rated) -- With this commemorative DVD of the BBC’s coverage of the Wedding of the Century, you can relive all the pomp and pageantry over and over again. Sigh at the beautiful gown. Smile at the ador-able flower girls and pageboys. And laugh at the hats. Oh, those hats!

“The Great Dictator: The Criterion Collection” (G) -- Charlie Chaplin’s classic satire of Adolf Hitler is now available in a completely remas-tered high-def, Blu-ray format. Special features include: commentary by Chaplin historians Dan Kamin and Hooman Mehran; the documen-tary “The Tramp and the Dictator,” narrated by Kenneth Branagh; on-set color footage shot by Chaplin’s brother Sidney; a booklet featuring an essay about the film, plus a 1940 article by Chap-lin discussing the film.

“Public Speaking” (Unrated) -- Originally shown on HBO, director Martin Scorsese pres-ents a portrait of the life of satirist, journalist and gay-rights activist Fran Lebowitz, author of “Metropolitan Life” and “Social Studies.” Inter-cutting between archival footage from the 1970s, interviews with friends and admirers, and Leb-owitz’s speaking engagements, Scorsese weaves an intimate tapestry of the life of one of New York City’s great writers.

TOYS (continued):• “What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, and

makes a slinkity sound? A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, everyone knows it’s Slinky. It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky. For fun it’s a wonderful toy. It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky. It’s fun for a girl and a boy.” This catchy advertising jingle helped sell a quite simple toy that was created in 1943 by naval engineer Richard James. He was working with tension springs, and when one of the springs fell to the ground and “walked” end over end along the floor, an idea for a toy was born. After borrowing $500, James and his wife Betty started the James Spring & Wire Company. He designed a machine that he made himself to manufacture Slinkys. They began producing and selling the coiled wire as a toy in 1945. Each one is made of 80 feet of wire, and to date, over a quarter billion Slinkys have been sold worldwide.

• In 1916, Frank Lloyd Wright and his son John Lloyd Wright supervised constriction of the Imperial Palace Hotel in Tokyo. The hotel was assembled with an inner frame of wood to withstand earthquakes. John was inspired by this method of building, and it gave him the idea to create a line of sturdy, interlocking toy building logs sold as Lincoln Logs.

• 1940, during World War II, rubber in the United States was scarce and the shortage began to hamper war production efforts, especially for

Why is live music so important?

Well, firstly, this isn’t just live music, this is local live music. These bands are the heart and soul of the mass amounts of hidden talent in the ever-growing lower mainland.

CASTLES (continued):• The famous Tower of London began as a

timber fortress in an earthen enclosure on the north bank of the Thames in London. In 1078, William the Conqueror replaced this timber fortress with a massive stone fortress called the Great Tower. William needed to show his authority and protect his new kingdom.

• In the Middle East, the Crusaders developed great castles with double circuits of curving outer walls and towers to overlook the entire wall. These castles influenced castle building throughout Europe and the British Isles, and the early 13th-century medieval castle was a marriage of Norman, English and Byzantine styles. Two good examples of this are the Château Gaillard on the Seine in France and the Conisbrough Castle in England.

• One of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland was Lethendy Tower, dating back to 1678.

• No two castles are the same. This is due to topography, taste, available materials and the ability of the designer.

• The spiral stairs in castle towers are designed to ascend clockwise in an effort to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use the sword in their right hand.

• At Exeter Castle in England in 1136, the garrison used wine to extinguish fires from a siege.

• The largest inhabited castle in the world is Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom.

• There were once about 5,000 castles in Japan, but today there are only about a dozen original feudal castles left.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Home conditions still demand attention. Also, keep an open mind about a sudden question of trust involving a close friend. All the facts are not yet in.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) With summer just around the corner, travel be-gins to dominate your sign. Make plans carefully to avoid potential problems in the first half of June.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A romantic Libra sets a challenge that your “sensible” side might question, but your ide-alistic self finds the prospect too intriguing to resist. The choice is yours.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Those tense times in your personal life are just about over. Concentrate on reaffirming relation-ships. Your love of travel opens a surprising new opportunity.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat usually loves to be in the center of things. But this week it might be wiser to watch and learn from the sidelines. A Pisces wants to make you purr.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) “New” is your watchword this week. Be open to new ideas, both on the job and in your personal life. A romantic Aries or Sagittarian beckons.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Some difficult family decisions have to be faced, but be sure to get more facts before you act. Be careful not to neglect your health during this trying time.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You still need to support a loved one through a difficult time. Meanwhile, things continue to work out to your benefit in the workplace.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects continue to favor expanding social opportunities. A Gemini reaches out to offer a chance for re-establishing a once-close relation-ship.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) There’s a potential for misunderstanding in both your job and your personal life. A full explana-tion of your intentions helps smooth things over.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be feeling restless on the job, but delay making any major moves until all the facts are in. A Scorpio has a surprising revelation.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your business sense works to your advantage as you sort through the possibilities that are opening up. A Libra is Cupid’s best bet for your romantic prospects.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for being open-minded about people. This helps you make friends easily. You do very well in public service.

Q: I was reading that “21 Jump Street” is going to be remade into a feature film. Is that true? If so, will any of the series’ original stars be making a cameo? I am sure Richard Grieco has some time. -- Pat R., via e-mailA: Actually, you might be surprised to learn that Officer Tom Hanson himself, Johnny Depp, plans to make a cameo in the movie adaptation of the TV series that helped launch his stellar Hollywood career. The remake -- which will star Channing Ta-tum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube and Rob Riggle -- is due to hit theaters in March 2012. Also, I am sure Rich-ard Grieco will jump on the cameo bandwagon if he’s asked -- unless he’s waiting for the big-screen version of “Booker.”***Q: I was so excited to watch one of my all-time favorite actors, Ed Asner, co-starring in CMT’s “Working Class.” Now that the show won’t be back for a second season, what are Ed’s plans? -- Martha F., Altoona, Pa.A: The great Ed Asner has just signed on to “Royal Pains” in a multiepisode guest-starring stint. Ed will appear in two episodes as the grandfather of Hank and Evan, played by Mark Feuerstein and Paulo Constanzo, respectively. The 81-year-old iconic sitcom actor will appear in the show’s up-coming third season, which premieres on Wednes-day, June 29, on USA.***Q: My sister was telling me about a new reality show about “Glee” where they search for the next cast member. Can you tell me more about that and where I can see it when it airs? -- Rhonda M., via e-mailA: Beginning Sunday, June 12, Oxygen will air

“The Glee Project.” From Ryan Murphy, the creator and Emmy award-winning executive producer of “Glee,” and executive producer of “Glee” Dante Di Loreto, this 10-episode competition series will find and train a group of 12 singers who will compete against one another to win a seven-episode guest-starring role on “Glee.” Also, a group of “Glee” se-ries regulars will appear as guest mentors in each episode. Fan favorite Darren Criss will make a guest appearance in the series premiere as the first of these mentors. Darren joined the cast last season as Blaine and quickly became a breakout sensation.***

Q: I really miss watching one of my favorite political pundits, Keith Olbermann, on MSNBC. Why hasn’t some other cable network snapped him up yet? -- Kellie H., Knoxville, Tenn.A: Cable network Current TV has done the snap-ping-up honors. The network announced that Keith Olbermann will return to the air June 20, hosting a weeknight news-commentary hour called “Count-down with Keith Olbermann.” Keith left MSNBC in January and apparently signed on with Current TV less than a month later. For those unfamiliar with the station, Current TV is the public-affairs channel launched in 2005 by former vice president Al Gore and Joel Hyatt.

Brad Pitt is taking on zombies in his latest film! His production company, Plan B En-tertainment, had to wrestle “World War Z” away from Leonardo Di Caprio’s Appian Way Productions. When two of our best ac-tors are fighting over a zombie movie, you can bet it must be a fantastic script. Based on a Max Brooks book, the story follows Gerry Lane, who travels through a post-zombie war world and interviews survivors. If Para-mount Pictures can find the necessary partner to split the cost of the $125 million venture, shooting will begin in June.***Had a reader ask, “What’s happened to Rob-ert Blake?” Blake beat criminal charges for the murder of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakely, but was sued in civil court by her three chil-dren in 2005 for her wrongful death and or-dered to pay them $30 million. Two months later, Blake filed for bankruptcy. In 2008, Blake appealed the judgment and it was cut to $15 million. Now Blake has $3 million of

unpaid taxes and legal fees and says he may have to go back to work to pay his debts ... that is, if anyone will hire him.In February, Blake agreed to sign pictures for fans (which would put money in his pocket) at an autograph convention in Burbank. He made a fuss because his line was too short and was asked to leave by the organizers. He came back the next day and signed auto-graphs in the parking lot ... for free. Promot-ers had him removed. There are many similarities between Blake and O.J. Simpson. Both beat criminal charg-es, lost civil wrongful-death suits and seem to have a hard time keeping their noses clean. You’d think that if you allegedly got away with murder, you’d keep a low profile. I saw Blake at Nate ’n Al’s recently and watched as people filed by his table for a closer look. Ev-eryone was talking about him. It’s one thing to be famous, and a whole other thing to be infamous!***If you’ve got an extra $4.25 million, you could own Jack Nicholson’s 70-acre Malibu mansion that he’s owned since 1978. Jack

still lives in his Mulholland Drive house, where his neighbor was Marlon Brando. He is carefully picking his next project after the disappointing performance in “How Do You Know?” that toplined Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson. Jack turned 74 on April 22, and he admitted, “I’m slowing down and have struck bio-gravity, I can’t hit on women in public places any more.” Hey Jack, you don’t know Jack! You obviously have forgot-ten a lot about women. You don’t have to hit on them. You’re Jack Nicholson ... let THEM do the work!

FLASHBACK TRIVIA

It was British author Douglas Adams, best known for his “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” novels, who made the following sage observation: “Any-one who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

In the African nation of Sudan, a traditional wed-ding includes a ceremony known as “sungkem,” in which the bride and groom kiss the knees of their parents.

“Casablanca,” starring Humphrey Bogart and In-grid Bergman, is one of the most beloved movies of all time, frequently being listed at or near the top of lists of the best films ever made. However, shortly after its release in November 1942, The New Yorker rated it only “pretty tolerable.”

Connoisseurs of frog legs claim that you should leave the toes on when frying -- they’re good for picking your teeth after eating. The deepest hole ever drilled by humans reached a whopping depth of 7.62 miles. The project, known

as the Kola Superdeep Borehole, was undertaken in Russia for the purpose of scientific research.

At any given time, about two-thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by clouds. American author, abolitionist, naturalist, histo-rian and philosopher Henry David Thoreau died on May 6, 1862, of complications of tuberculosis. Those who were with him during his final mo-ments say his last words were “moose” and “In-dian.” The tiny nation of San Marino, which is entirely encircled by Italy, is the world’s oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic. It was founded by a stonecutter in the year 301, and the constitution was enacted in 1600 -- the world’s oldest still in effect. ***Thought for the Day: “There’s no secret about success. “Fill a quart-size zip-lock bag with water and double-bag it, making sure there is no air in the bag. Place it inside the toilet tank, on the opposite side from the pump. Secure it there, if you can. This will displace some of the wa-ter when you flush, and you will use less wa-ter as a consequence.” -- E.S. in Florida

If you have a stained porcelain sink, try using it to soak your stained garments. The presoak can do double duty on the stained sink and washables alike.

To make your own breadcrumbs without a chopper or blender, place dry bread pieces in a plastic bag. Use a rolling pin to “roll” them into crumbs.

Save water in the shower by using your kitch-en timer, set for no more than 5 minutes. If you can find a digital one, you will know bet-ter how much time you have left. After a little while, you almost don’t need the timer.

“If you seal your jelly jars with wax, here’s a good tip: Place a small piece of string into the wax before it hardens. Then, you’ll be able to pull on the string to remove the wax when you’re ready to enjoy your homemade good-ies!” -- U.L. in Maine

Laundry stain removers can be good to re-move stains from concrete drives. For in-stance, my relatives’ car was leaking, and I was able to get the stains from my pavers by using a spray-and-wash stain remover I bor-rowed from the laundry room. It worked very well. -- S.E. in Arkansas

James Wright, an engineer working for General Electric, experimented with combining boric acid and silicone oil in a test tube. The compound “polymerized,” resulting in a bizarre substance with unusual properties. It bounced, stretched and could be broken in pieces, yet it had no practical use.

The name was later changed to Silly Putty, and it is now sold by Binney & Smith, the makers of Crayola. More than 4,500 tons of Silly Putty, enough to fill the Goodyear blimp, have been made since 1950.

On May 23, 1701, at London’s Execution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, popularly known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for five charges of piracy and one charge of murdering a crewman. A colorful Kidd legend included reports of lost buried treasure that fortune seekers have pur-sued for centuries.

On May 24, 1883, after 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York is opened, the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date.

On May 27, 1894, Dashiell Hammett, author of “The Maltese Falcon,” is born in Maryland. He worked as a Pinkerton detective for eight years and turned his experiences into fiction. The nov-el was filmed three times: once in 1931; again in 1936 under the title “Satan Met a Lady,” starring Bette Davis; and finally in 1941, starring Hum-phrey Bogart.

On May 26, 1927, the final and 15 millionth Model T Ford rolls out of the factory, on the of-ficial last day of production. Introduced in Octo-ber 1908, the Model T -- also known as the “Tin Lizzie” -- got about 13 to 21 miles per gallon of gasoline and could travel up to 45 mph.

On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on earth. At 29,035 feet above sea level, the low-oxygen summit of Everest reaches two-thirds of the way through the air of earth’s atmosphere -- at about the cruising altitude of jet airliners.

On May 25, 1977, George Lucas’ blockbuster movie “Star Wars” opens in American theaters. With its groundbreaking special effects, “Star Wars” was soon a bona-fide pop culture phe-nomenon, spawning five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys and video games.

On May 28, 1983, Irene Cara’s song “Flash-dance (What a Feeling)”, from the “Flashdance” movie soundtrack, goes to the top of the U.S. pop charts. The song helped propel the relatively low-budget film to the No. 3 spot on the total box-office revenue list for the year.

person baking would see the name Frisbie. Mr. Frisbie’s pies were sold throughout Connecticut. It was at Yale University sometime in the 1940s where students used the pie tins to play catch, whizzing them through the air.

• A decade later in California, a flying-saucer enthusiast named Walter Morrison designed a saucer-like disk as a toy for throwing. It was produced by a company named Wham-O. While on a promotional tour of college campuses, the president of Wham-O encountered the pie-plate-tossing craze at Yale. And so the flying saucer from California was renamed after the pie plate from Connecticut. The spelling was changed from Frisbie to Frisbee to avoid any legal problems.

• What we know today as the Yo-Yo is possibly the second oldest toy in the world after dolls. Ancient Greek yo-yos made of terra cotta are displayed in museums and pictured on the walls of Egyptian temples. The yo-yo is known to have been popular with Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington. In the 1920s, a Philippine immigrant named Pedro Flores came to Santa Monica and worked as a bellhop. He had grown up carving and playing with wooden yo-yos, which was a traditional pastime in the Philippines. On his coffee breaks, Flores always drew a crowd playing games with his yo-yo. He became the first person to mass-produce the toy and is responsible for the name Yo-Yo, which means “come-come” in Philippine. An entrepreneur named Donald Duncan saw the Flores toy, liked it, bought the rights from Flores in 1929, and then trademarked the name Yo-Yo. Duncan changed the string from a tied knot to the looped slip-string, which allows the user to do advanced tricks.

• In 1767 London, an engraver and mapmaker named John Spilsbury created the first jigsaw

puzzle as an aid in teaching students geography. He glued a map of England and Wales on a sheet of hardwood and cut around the borders of the countries using a fine-bladed saw. The jigsaw puzzle was born. The idea caught on, and people began making puzzles out of pictures as a form of entertainment. These early jigsaw puzzles did not interlock; that wasn’t possible until the invention of power tools more than a century later. In 1880, Milton Bradley made the first jigsaw puzzle for children called “The Smashed Up Locomotive.”

ASHLEY FORCE HOODPresident, John Force Entertainment

Long before she learned to manipulate one of the world’s most powerful race cars and years before she put her Castrol GTX Ford Mustang in the win-ners’ circle in back-to-back appearances in the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals (2009-2010), Ashley Force Hood earned a degree from Cal State-Fullerton in Radio, TV and Film.

This year, the 28-year-old will begin to make maxi-mum use of that degree as the president of John Force Entertainment, a company tasked with the re-sponsibility of taking the JFR brand to new markets and new audiences.

Because of the demands of that job and the fact that she and her husband Dan are expecting their first child, Force Hood is at least temporarily stepping out of the cockpit of the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang in which she set an NHRA speed record (316.38 miles per hour) just a year ago.

“I won’t be driving a race car this season,” Force Hood acknowledged, “but I will still represent Castrol, Ford, Auto Club, BrandSource and Mac Tools; I will still be involved in media, commer-cials and interviews; and I will definitely still be rooting on my teammates to go after that 2011 Championship.”Among the goals of John Force Entertainment are the creation of a real-life TV show similar to “Driving Force,” the breakthrough series that aired for two years on A&E Network, and the completion of the authorized John Force biogra-phy.

Force Hood also will oversee the completion of an interactive “day at the races” children’s book she has authored, a graphic novel featuring a “su-perhero” version of her father and JFR-generated driver segments that will be available on the in-ternet.

Even though she began racing out of high school, Ashley’s mother insisted that before she em-barked on a full-time career, she had to earn her college degree. As a result, she spent her week-ends racing and her weekdays in school, ulti-mately graduating from Cal State-Fullerton in 3½ years.

Considering her new position, looks like it was time well spent. For more on this story go to www.ashleyforce.com
