TIDBITS® EXPLORES SOME OF LIFE’SCROSSINGSby Patricia L. Cook
Tidbits crosses many paths in researching information for your reading pleasure. This issue will look at some familiar crosses and crossings that we all encounter. • The first type of crossing that comes tomind
for most is a railroad crossing. Many drivers encounter railroad crossings every time they drive. Rail lines are prevalent in North America, which highlights the fact that railroads play a huge part in transporting goods and people across this continent.
•Where railroads exist, crossings also exist.Railroad crossings are intersections where a roadway crosses a railroad at-grade. In the United States, they are referred to as grade crossings. In Canada and many other places, they are called level crossings.
•As of 2005, there were 147,681 public gradecrossings and 94,583 private crossings in theUnited States. Public crossings are maintained by a public authority, but private crossings, not intended for public use, are not. They are for the use of the owners of the property and usually on farmsorindustrialcomplexes.
• Grade crossings in all countries have alwaysbeen accident-prone areas. When vehicles orpedestrians cross the paths of trains, trains win. The good news is that in recent years, accident rates have gone down.

HOLLYWOOD--Parentgroupsarealloverthe possibility that NBC will replace CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan on “America’s Got Talent” with radio shock-jock HowardStern. They’ve informed the network that Stern “is not appropriate for the family-friendlyseries.”ItwasonStern’sshowthatproducer Brett Ratner followed up his anti-gaycommentataQ&Aforhisfilm“TowerHeist”withadetailedaccountingofhissexlife. The one-two punch caused such an out-cry in Hollywood that Ratner was compelled toresignasproducerofthenextOscarshow, quickly followed by the announcement that host Eddie Murphy would resign as well.Insiders speculate Murphy realized he was over his head and wanted out. Ratner got him intoitandhadtogethimoutofit!We’llnev-er know how Murphy would’ve done as host, but lucky for us, Oscar-winning producer BrianGrazerandeight-timeOscarhostBillyCrystal were waiting in the wings and will surely blow the roof off the Kodak Theatre. That’s a slam dunk! ***
Producer/director/writer and actor Quen-tin Tarantino won his Oscar for writing the screenplay of 1994’s “Pulp Fiction.” Nowhe’s finished directing Oscar-winner Rus-sellCroweandLucyLiuin“TheManWiththeIronFist,”dueoutinOctober2012,andis working on his next film, “Django Un-chained.”Tarantino’sscreenplayisbasedonthe1966ItalianspaghettiWestern“Django,”directed by Sergio Corbucci, which starred FrancoNeroandwasconsideredoneof themostviolentfilmsofitstime.Tarantino shifted the time and place to the pre-CivilWar south and cast Oscar-winner
Jamie Foxx in the title role of an escapedslave turned bounty hunter who returns to the plantation to free his wife. It also stars Oscar-winnerChristophWaltz, JosephGor-don-Levitt, Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Sasha Baron Cohen and Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo plays a villain who forces slaves into prostitution. Too bad it isn’t a musical ... the hitsongcouldbe“TangowithDjango!”***Everyone’s wondering, what was the real reason Regis Philbin left his talk show after nearly three decades? When Regis hosted“GoodMorningL.A.,”Iwasonthesetpho-tographing Carol Burnett, whom I’d known since I was 11. as do many of the Hollywood royalty that Ricky teases. Liam Neeson has voiced his approval of Ricky, saying: “Hollywood needs a shake-up. He’ll be great.” Robert DeNiro showeredRicky with praise after last year’s controversial telecast, telling Ricky he’d be happy to set any-one straight who was offended. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by let-ting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gifts that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family mem-bers, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holi-day scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some con-fusion about the direction you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is well-advised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative com-ments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW!
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new op-portunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive.
BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare excep-tions, they’re in your life forever.

Mysterious MistletoeScandanavians associatedMistletoewithFrigga, their god-dess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the cus-tom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had the promise of happiness and good luck in the following year.
Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter.
The mistletoe that is commonly used as a Christmas deco-ration(Phoradendronflavescens)isnativetoNorthAmericaandgrowsasaparasiteontreesintheWestandalsoalongalinedowntheEastCoastfromNewJerseytoFlorida.
Europeanmistletoe (Viscumalbum)figuredprominently inGreekmythology, andisbelievedtobeTheGoldenBoughofAeneas, ancestor of the Romans.
It is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistle-toe would lay down their weapons and embrace.
Mistletoe is rarely found growing on oak trees, and as such was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixthnightofthemoon,white-robedDruidpriestswouldcutthe oak mistletoe with a golden sickle. Two white bulls would besacrificedamidprayersthattherecipientsofthemistletoewould prosper.
Thestickyjuiceofmistletoeberrieswasusedasadhesivetotrap small animals or birds. In South Africa, it is called “Bird lime”inEnglish.
According to custom in the English-speaking world, the mistletoe must not touch the ground between its cutting and its removal as the last of Christmas greens at Candlemas; it may remain hanging through the year, often to preserve the housefromlightningorfire,untilitwasreplacedthefollow-ing Christmas Eve.
In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to prevent the en-trance of witches.
In some parts of England, the Christmas mistletoe is burned on the 12th night lest all the boys and girls who have kissed under it never marry.
