• While the modern game was developed in Canada, ice hockey made it to the USA and was first played there in 1893. By the beginning of the 20th century, the sport had spread to England and other parts of Europe and now is very popular in North America and Eastern Europe.

• The National Hockey League is considered the most important Ice Hockey league in the world and is made up of teams from the United States and Canada. For many years almost all NHL players were Canadians.

• In 1917, the NHL began with the following “Original Six” teams: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. Through a sequence of team expansions, reductions and relocations, the league currently consists of 30 teams, 24 based in the United States and six in Canada.

• The team that wins the NHL championship wins the Stanley Cup trophy.

• The first Olympic Games to include ice hockey for men took place in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920; it was the Summer Games. However, the first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and also included hockey. Women’s hockey was added to the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998.

• Pucks weren’t always the same. Now, a puck must meet guidelines set forth by the NHL for weight and dimensions. In 1940, Hockey Hall of Famer Art Ross came up with the idea of having all pucks meet certain standards. Pucks have remained the same since then, with each being 3 inches (8 centimeters) in diameter and an inch (3 centimeters) high. The puck must weigh no less than 5.5 ounces (156 grams) and no more than 6 ounces (170 grams). Grooved, diamond-shaped edges, a feature that gives a puck some traction with the hockey stick, are necessary.

• The NHL puck, with the exception of the colored logos on it, is always black. Hockey pucks are frozen before being used in play, because the rubber with which they are made is too bouncy otherwise.

• NHL overtime was eliminated during WWII, because there were restrictions on train travel. Officials couldn’t risk a game going too long and players missing the one and only train that night. It was reinstated in 1983-84.

• Don Koharski was the first Canadian referee ever requested by the Soviets in an international Canada-USSR match, Game One of the 1987 Canada Cup Final. Before that, there were numerous controversies concerning Russians and their tactics surrounding officiating.

• The first goaltender to regularly wear a facemask during a game was Montreal’s Jacques Plante. A shot busted his nose in 1959. The injury required seven stitches, and he always wore one after that. He was made fun of at first, but now every goaltender wears a mask.

• Before 1914, referees used to place the puck

HOLLYWOOD ... As if Angelina Jolie doesn’t have enough on her plate as the leading female star in ac-tion films today (her latest, “Salt,” has grossed upward of $250 million) and as the wife of Brad Pitt and the mother of all those kids, she now plans to step behind the camera and direct a film about the Bosnian War, which she has no doubt researched during all her visits to that region as a goodwill ambassador for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refu-gees -- now that’s a mouthful! But first she will star opposite Johnny Depp in “The Tourist” in December.Look for Jeremy Renner, last year’s Oscar nominee as best actor for “The Hurt Locker,” to get the big Hol-lywood star build-up. He will give Tom Cruise a run for his money in the next installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, scheduled for release just before Christmas this year. Then Renner jumps right into “The Avengers,” set for a 2012 release. And speaking of Tom Cruise, don’t expect his wife, Katie Holmes, to be sitting around waiting for him to come home from shooting. She’s set to star opposite Adam Sandler and Al Pacino (now that’s an interesting trio of casting) in “Jack & Jill.” But here’s the twist, folks: Adam Sandler plays twins ... yes, Jack & Jill. We can’t wait for this one!Get ready for a great new children’s book that tells the classic story of “The Wizard of Oz” in song. Illus-trated beautifully by Warden Neil and sung by Tamara Walker, “It’s All About Dorothy” somehow manages to tell the entire story in only 36 lines. To sample a little of the book and song, go to www.itsallaboutdorothy.com.Not everyone has gone Hollywood. Shia LaBeouf, star of the “Transformers” movies and now on the big screen in the “Wall Street” sequel with Michael Douglas, did not forget his humble beginnings. There were leaner days when he slept on the couch in his agent’s office for want of his own place. Then good parts in big movies came, and he left his agent for a bigger agency -- with her blessing. He remembered his agent’s kindness with a small percentage of his earn-ings from that day forward. You might say he wasn’t “Shi-a” gratitude! And hasn’t Michael Douglas had enough misfortune? His son in jail, his ex suing over the sequel money for “Wall Street” -- which she thinks she got in the divorce -- and now that little bout with the big C he’s fighting right now. Just when things couldn’t be better with his beautiful and talented wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his kids. He’s in our prayers. In case you only know the name and face of Paul Newman from salad dressing and popcorn boxes at the market, you’ll have a chance to see him as a movie star when Sony releases the 1981 drama “Absence of Malice.” The film co-stars ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters” multiple Emmy winner Sally Field, who was a TV star in “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun” before she was a two-time Oscar winning movie star for “Norma Rae” and “Places In the Heart,” then became a TV star again. The film will be available on DVD and Blu-ray. By the way, all the money from every Paul Newman product goes directly to charity!

on the ice between the players’ sticks for face-offs. This led to many cuts, bruises and even broken hands for the referees. Starting in 1914, the referees were allowed to drop the puck between the players’ sticks.

• The best ice for professional hockey is approximately 3/4 of an inch (2 centimeters) thick and is held at 16 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 degrees Celsius) for proper hardness. The thicker the sheet of ice becomes, the softer and “slower” it is. Commercial ice shows often perform on warmer, slower ice.

• Randy Pierce of the Colorado Rockies was so thrilled with his goal at 19:27 of the third period in their franchise’s first win over the New York Islanders in 1979, he picked the puck up off the ice as the goaltender tried to return it to the linesman for a face-off. Pierce kissed the puck and was given a two-minute penalty for delay of game.

• When a hockey player scores three goals in one game, it is called a “hat trick.” So who came up with the term? Some think it derives from the habit of a Toronto haberdasher presenting a new hat to any three-goal scorer in Maple Leaf Gardens. Others say the term hat trick may have originated with the Biltmore Hat Company, which sponsored the Guelph Biltmores of the Ontario Hockey League. Still another theory is this: “Hat trick” is also a cricket term, and refers to a bowler taking three wickets with three successive balls, a very unusual achievement. Similar to the ice hockey version of events, the 19th century custom of a cricket club awarding a new club hat to mark the success, gave rise to the phrase, which was first recorded in print in 1858.

• Did you know that the Detroit Red Wings began life as the Detroit Cougars? This was the original name for the Detroit franchise granted by the NHL in 1926. (The name referred to the fact that the majority of players were from the Victoria Cougars.) They played in the NHL under this name from 1927-1930. The name then changed to Detroit Falcons for the 1930-1932 seasons before the name changed again, to Detroit Red Wings.

• The Montreal Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups, the most of any NHL team ever. Second is the Toronto Maple Leafs, with 13. In third place? The Detroit Red Wings, at 10.

Music Legends:The Police

The Police burned up the airways in the eighties and are now considered rock n’ roll royalty, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date.• The Police were founded by American-born

drummer Stewart Copeland in early 1977. After the demise of his progressive rock band Curved Air, Copeland was anxious to form a new three-piece group and join the London punk scene.

• Singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Henry Padovani began rehearsing with Copeland in January 1977 as the Police, and they recorded their first single, “Fall Out”/”Nothing Achieving,” the following month.

• In July 1977, Copeland, Sting, Padovani and Andy Summers began performing as a four-piece version of the Police. Padovani’s relatively limited ability as a guitarist curtailed his time with the band. Soon after an aborted recording session with producer John Cale in August of 1977, Padovani left the band, and Summers took over guitar duties. The lineup of Copeland, Sting and Summers would endure for the rest of Police history.

• The music for “Walking on the Moon” came into Sting’s head when he was alone in a hotel room. He originally wanted to call it “Walking Round the Room.” After he thought of the riff, he began to walk around the room to the beat.

• For the Police, recording their first album, “Outlandos d’Amour” was a hardship. They worked with a small budget and had neither a manager nor a record deal.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old golden retriever, “Hal,” and he has contracted puppy warts. I have been told there is no treatment for this, and the only recommendations I’ve received are to give him multivitamins and an occasional treat with honey on it. I’m hoping this will clear up in the next few weeks, as I usually put him in doggy day care two or three days a week, and they won’t allow him as this is extremely contagious. Do you have any tips on any other form of treatment that would clear this up? -- Sue, via e-mail DEAR SUE: Unfortunately, because puppy warts are caused by a virus, there is no treatment that will cure Hal quickly. The infection has to clear up on its own. Mul-tivitamins will help keep Hal physically strong so that his immune system keeps

working to get rid of the virus, but other than that, time is the only cure.Puppy warts normally clear up after about 45 days. Be sure to just let them go away on their own, and don’t try to remove them yourself. It is inconvenient for your puppy to be ban-ished from day care during this period, but hang in there. If you’re unable to stay with Hal all day or check in on him during your workday, ask a friend to stop in and spend some time with him so he’s not by himself in the house all day. If there’s one bright spot of news, it’s this: Once Hal recovers from puppy warts, he won’t catch them again.

Warts Keep Puppy Home From Day Care

1st Quarter 2010Week 8

February 14 - 20Page 8

DON’T GET WET! (continued):

• The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

• If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

• While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

• If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

• Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!

Thought of the week

¥ It was American author and philosopher Eric Hoffer who made the following sage observa-tion: “Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength.” ¥ If you were to have a perfectly dry mouth, you wouldn’t be able to taste a single thing. Researchers conducted an experiment in which they placed salt on a subject’s dry tongue, and the subject reported absolutely no taste at all. Once a drop of saliva was added, though, the taste came through clearly. ¥ According to the makers of the Stetson, a 10-gallon hat actually holds only about three quarts of liquid. ¥ During the third century, Saint Lawrence of Rome, a deacon to Pope Sixtus II, was burned to death during a series of persecutions of priests and deacons. Legend has it that while he was on the fire, he turned to his executioners and said,

“This side’s done; turn me over and have a bite.” It was for this reason that he was named the patron saint of butchers, roasters and comedians. ¥ The average robin reportedly has nearly 3,000 feathers. Makes you wonder who did the counting. ¥ Most people probably are aware of the fact that Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the only American president who was elected to more than two terms in office -- he served three full terms and died during his fourth term in office. Despite the fact that he was an incredibly popular president, however, in none of his four elections did he carry his home county of Dutchess, New York. ¥ If you have a severe food allergy, peanuts are the most common culprit, followed, in order, by shell-fish, fish, tree nuts and eggs.

Originally released in 1978, the single was re-released in 1979, and it was then that the Police gained widespread recognition in the United Kingdom, as well as scoring a minor hit with the song in several other countries, notably Australia.

• The group’s success led to a gig at the famous

New York club CBGB and a grueling United States tour for which the band drove themselves and all their equipment around the country in a Ford van.

• In October 1979, the group released their second album “Reggatta de Blanc,” which was a major seller throughout Europe. The album topped the British charts for four weeks and spawned the UK number-one singles “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon.” The instrumental title track won the

• By this time, Sting was becoming a major star, and he established a career beyond the Police by branching out into acting. He made a well-received debut as the Ace Face in “Quadrophenia,” the film version of The Who’s rock opera. He also played the character Feyd Rautha in the movie “Dune.” As Sting’s fame rose, his relationship with band founder Stewart Copeland began to deteriorate.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although practical situations continue to dominate this week, there’s time for the Lamb to indulge in the fun things in life -- like maybe taking a special someone out for a great evening.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors relationships. Take time to renew old ones, and make time to go where new friends can be found. On a more practical note, expect news about a business deal.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be seeing some progress on that new workplace situation. Meanwhile, family matters might demand more attention, and you’ll want to set aside time to deal with them.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship suddenly might present some chal-lenges you never expected. After talking things out, you might want to consider taking some time to assess what you’ve learned.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A disappointing response to a request might dampen the Lion’s spirits. But you might want to ask the reasons behind it. What you learn can be of great importance in a future undertaking.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A once-volatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project you’ve been planning for. Look for an interested party to rally to your support.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business matter that unexpectedly turns into a personal situation could create complications. Best to resolve the matter now before too much harm can be done.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Emo-tions can run high when they involve personal mat-ters that no one really wants to talk about. But this could be a good time to create the means to a workable outcome.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A positive response to a workplace request could lead the way to other long-sought changes. Con-gratulations. A personal situation also takes a welcome turn.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Patience pays off, as that once-overwhelming work situation continues to become easier to handle on a one-by-one basis. Look for positive news from a colleague.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be a good idea to take more time to reas-sess your next move in working out a complex situation. You could benefit from a new perspective on the matter.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might want to consider making time to discuss a change of plans with everyone concerned. Be prepared to explain your actions. Also be prepared to listen to alternatives.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have a strong sense of what is right, and you try to work from that founda-tion. Friends see you as reliable.

On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Society of Jesus receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The Jesuit order played an important role in the Counter-Ref-ormation and eventually succeeded in converting millions around the world to Catholicism.

On Oct. 2, 1780, 31-year-old British Major John Andre is hanged as a spy by U.S. military forces. When Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, was captured on Sept. 23, incriminating papers were found in his boot. The papers revealed that U.S. General Benedict Arnold, commander of West Point, had offered to surrender the strategic Hudson River fort to the British for a bribe of 20,000 pounds.

On Oct. 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed in Detroit. It had a 22 horsepower, four-cylinder engine, could go as fast as 40 mph and could run on gasoline or hemp-based fuel.

On Sept. 28, 1941, the Boston Red Sox’s Ted Wil-liams plays a double-header against the Philadel-phia Athletics on the last day of the regular season and gets six hits in eight trips to the plate, boosting his batting average to .406.

On Sept. 30, 1954, the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, is commissioned by the U.S. Navy. It first ran under nuclear power on the morning of Jan. 17, 1955. The Nautilus could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel.

On Sept. 29, 1988, Stacy Allison of Portland, Ore., becomes the first American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which at 29,035 feet above sea level is the highest point on earth. About two dozen climbers died in attempts to reach the top of Everest in the 20th century.

On Oct. 3, 1995, at the end of a sensational trial, former football star O.J. Simpson is acquitted of the brutal 1994 double murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron-ald Goldman. A majority of African Americans be-lieved Simpson to be innocent of the crime, while white America was confident of his guilt.

March 1984, the group disbanded, and each band member went on to pursue his own solo career. In June 1986, the trio reconvened to play three concerts for the Amnesty International tour. In July of that same year, a tense, short-lived reunion in the studio produced only subdued re-recordings of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.”

built on high ground with clear views of the surrounding land.

• Castles with curtain walls with flanking towers were difficult to capture. These towers allowed well-protected defenders to fire at attackers along the line of the castle walls, concentrating fire on particular points of heavy attack. A good early example of a castle with flanking towers is Framlingham in Suffolk, England. Along the curtain wall, at intervals, are 13 square or rectangular towers.

• At the top of the castle walls were battlements, a protective, tooth-shaped parapet with a wall walk behind it for the soldiers to stand on. The defenders could fire missiles through gaps. The raised sections between are called merlons, which helped to shelter the defenders during an enemy attack.

CASTLES (continued):

• Castles in the round: It was harder for attackers to make round towers collapse. Unlike square towers, they had no corners, which collapsed if holes were dug underneath the foundations.

• European castles had their origins dating back to around AD 900 and played a great role in the then military system of feudalism.

• The great age of castles began almost 1,000 years ago and lasted for nearly 500 years. The first proper castles built in England were built after the Norman Conquest in 1066. They were introduced by William the Conqueror, when he invaded England from his homeland in France.

• The famous Tower of London began as a timber fortress in an earthen enclosure on the north bank of the Thames in London. In 1078, William the Conqueror replaced this timber fortress with a massive stone fortress called the Great Tower. William needed to show his authority and protect his new kingdom.

• In the Middle East, the Crusaders developed great castles with double circuits of curving outer walls and towers to overlook the entire wall. These castles influenced castle building

throughout Europe and the British Isles, and the early 13th-century medieval castle was a marriage of Norman, English and Byzantine styles. Two good examples of this are the Château Gaillard on the Seine in France and the Conisbrough Castle in England.

• One of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland was Lethendy Tower, dating back to 1678.

• No two castles are the same. This is due to topography, taste, available materials and the ability of the designer.

• The spiral stairs in castle towers are designed to ascend clockwise in an effort to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use the sword in their right hand.

• At Exeter Castle in England in 1136, the garrison used wine to extinguish fires from a siege.

• The largest inhabited castle in the world is Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom.

• There were once about 5,000 castles in Japan, but today there are only about a dozen original feudal castles left.
