Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHello Everyone!

Well, another whirlwind week here at Tidbits. Not a lot of time to put words on paper so I just wanted to say - as always - thank you so very much for picking up Tidbits and giving some of your time to reading it. Our advertisers and

sponsors appreciate it very much.Be sure to check out our Reader Contest this week, Lynette

suggested we give away a Travel Safety Kit and I thought it was a great idea. We put on many miles bringing Tidbits to our loyal readership each week, and this time of year we have to be extra careful not put ourselves in dangerous and sometimes deadly situations, and we hope you do the same.

Have a great week and be safe out there!Sean Athey, owner/publisher

• On Jan. 30, 1920, Toyo Cork Kogyo, a Japanese cork busi-ness, is formed. A decade later, the company produced its first vehicle and changed its name to Mazda. The Mazda-Go was a three-wheeled truck that resembled a motorcycle with a cargo-carrier at the back.

• On Jan. 31, 1945, Pvt. Eddie Slovik becomes the first Ameri-can soldier since the Civil War to be executed for desertion. Slo-vik was originally classified 4-F because of a prison record, but was reclassified 1-A when draft standards were lowered. In 1944, he was trained to be a rifleman, which was not to his liking, as he hated guns.

• On Jan. 28, 1959, the Green Bay Packers of the National Foot-ball League sign Vince Lombardi to a five-year contract as the team’s coach and general manager. The Brooklyn-born Lombardi played college football at Fordham University as a guard on the offensive line, dubbed the “Seven Blocks of Granite.”

• On Jan. 29, 1964, Stanley Kubrick’s black comic masterpiece “Dr. Strangelove” opens in theaters to both critical and popular acclaim. The movie focused on the actions of a rogue U.S. mili-tary officer who believed that communists are threatening the “precious bodily fluids” of Americans.

• On Jan. 27, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly incorporates the University of Georgia, the first state-

funded institution of higher learning in the new republic. It wasn’t until 1918 that the university began admitting women.

• On Feb. 1, 1885, John Taylor, the president of the Mormon Latter-day Saints Church, goes “underground” to avoid arrest and continue resisting federal demands for polygamy. Taylor had at least seven wives. Although the Mormons wanted freedom from outside interference, they also sought the benefits of being a part of the United States. Inevitably, these two goals conflicted.

A: Dumbo is one of my favorite Disney characters. In the 1941 film, a circus elephant was born with ears so big that both he and his mother became objects of humiliation. The film was a major success, and its score by Oliver Wallace and Frank Churchill won an Academy Award.

In all of the years that I have prowled antique shops and malls, I have never seen a Dumbo cookie jar. I did find it refer-enced in “The Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. According to Hake, your cookie jar is valued in the $65 to $250 range depending on condition.

eral dozen bottles. The one that has me stumped is an old soda pop bottle for Triple AAA root beer. I have never heard of it and suspect my bottle could be scarce. -- Rob, Canton, Ohio

A: I found your bottle referenced in “Petretti’s Soda Pop Collectibles Price Guide,” published by Krause. Allan Petretti is one of the foremost authorities in this field of collecting. His book indicates your bottle is probably from the 1950s, and in good condition (no chips or cracks) could be worth as much as much as $235. Not a bad find. Incidentally, the company’s slogan was “Makes Thirst a Joy.”

• • •Q: In my mother’s estate is a coin collection, including an

1883 silver coin that has a face of a lady with a decorative vine of flowers. How much is it worth? Answer me via my email. -- C.W., Brooklyn, New York

A: It sounds like your coin is a silver dollar. With coins, condition is extremely important. Because I have not seen the coin and am not even certain which one it is, that is about as far as I can go. Since you live in Brooklyn, my advice is to show your coin to several dealers in your area for an idea of current value. I do not answer questions except in my col-umn.

Except for stray pine needles hiding between sofa cushions and under area rugs, our holiday decor with all its warm scents, glitter and glow is out of mind, now stored away for 11 months in our chilly attic.

I miss the sparkle of it all, especially during these long, dark, winter days when I need an extra push to get outside for a charge of energy. While it will take weeks to pick up more hours of daylight, I’m all for tricking my mind into thinking it’s spring, even when it’s not.

If you are on the same mission, think “perky” with these easy tips and tricks to brighten your home and sweep away the “blahs.”

Find new uses for everyday items: You and your kids can create a bright arrangement on your kitchen coun-ter or table. First, pick up a bouquet of the springiest of flowers, tulips! Let the kids trim the stems and ar-

range them in a bright container. How about a teapot? It doesn’t have to sit on a stove all the time, after all. Think toys, too. A bright-yellow truck can haul a fresh new mini pot of growing ivy into the arrangement. Set a few packets of 2013 veggie seeds in the cab as a re-minder of outdoor gardening fun on the horizon.

Clear the clutter and move things around: Get rid of stuff that’s no longer used or useful. Give away and re-cycle books, old and broken toys and furniture. While you are at it, rearrange beds, desks and bookcases to-gether in your kids’ rooms. What child doesn’t love the feeling of waking up the next morning to a new look?

It’s also refreshing on the eyes to move living-room and family-room furniture. Do it while the kids are at school, and watch their eyes pop when they walk in the door.

Wash windows: This one sounds like work, but it’s worth it. Grab squeegees, newspaper and rags to scrub and wipe away the grime. It’s amazing how looking through a clean window will brighten everyone’s day!

• If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer.

• “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- G.G. in New York

• As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find.

• “To help moisten really dry feet, slather on lo-tion, wrap feet in plastic wrap, then slip on some socks overnight -- or for as long as you can stand it.” -- B.H. in Michigan

• “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or run-ning-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” -- E.W. in Florida

• Don’t forget to clean your washing machine every so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on de-tergents.

• To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. Repeat as many times as neces-sary to remove all traces.

• If you’re planning a visit to rural Texas anytime soon, you might want to keep in mind that in that state, it’s against the law to milk a cow that belongs to someone else.

• You may have heard of bridezilla, but what about momzilla? In a survey by David’s Bridal, 22 percent of respondents claimed that it was the mother of the bride who caused the most conflict when planning the event, while another 22 percent said that it was the mother of the groom. You might want to take these results with a grain of salt, though, considering the

fact that the survey respondents were actually brides themselves.

• Even an honest person might have some sympa-thy for the deceit attempted by a man named Corey Taylor in 2007. He was so desperate to get out of his cell-phone contract without paying the high fee that he attempted to fake his own death. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t work.
