In Canada, ice hockey and curling are major passions. In most of the rest of the world, it’s soccer. But did you know that all over the world there are national sports that you’ve never even heard of? This week Tidbits takes a look at just a few of those wild and wacky oddball sports. Let the games begin. • The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event meant for sports not in the Olympic Games. Some of the current sports in the World Games are bodybuilding, power lifting, fin swimming, squash, netball, billiards, ten-pin bowling and water skiing. It has not been uncommon for World Game events to become Olympic events. • Extreme ironing is an up-and-coming sport that started in the United Kingdom in 1997. Ironing? It sounds pretty boring, right? Wrong! I don’t think you’d see a typical homemaker ironing this way. It’s the “extreme” in extreme ironing that makes it exciting, challenging and dangerous. In America, it’s football and baseball. In Canada, ice hockey and curling are major passions. In most of the rest of the world, it’s soccer. But did you know that all over the world there are national sports that you’ve never even heard of? This week Tidbits takes a look at just a few of those wild and wacky oddball sports. Cat’s Aim Is Off the Mark

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a 2-year-old spayed female cat. “Trudy” has a problem when she pees in her lit-ter box. She tends to spray over the top of the box. Someone suggested a covered cat box, so I found two at garage sales. She still pees to the back, and the pee drips down the back of the box where it clips on. Why is she doing this? I use litter she likes. Is this just a habit, or should I take her to the vet and get checked out? We really don’t want to take her back just because of this. She is so sweet. Is there anything else we can do? -- Linda D., via e-mail

DEAR LINDA: It’s always worth a trip to the veterinarian just to rule out any health problems. If Trudy checks out OK, there may not be much else to do after that.I’ve seen cats before that sprayed over the top of their lit-ter boxes. In one case it was a dominant male in a three-cat household that clearly wanted everyone to know this was his box. He refused to use a covered box and would pee outside of the one that was installed, so his owner put the old box back and built a splashguard -- cardboard wrapped with foil -- that drained back into the litter box. That cat loved spraying on the splashguard all the more because of the sound of water hitting the tinfoil. Trudy does not appear to have this problem. She’s not refus-ing her litter box, which is very good. Don’t take her back because of this minor issue. If the veterinarian doesn’t find anything wrong, continue to rinse the litter box top after every cleaning, and perhaps rig a splash-guard system that prevents the urine from collecting in the rim.

Unplanned Pregnancy?Did your dog or cat have an unplanned litter and you don’t know what to do? The babies are getting bigger and you can’t find homes?

If you surrender a litter of puppies or kittens to the Humane Society of Broward County, the shelter will spay and neuter all the pets in your household for just $10.00 each. That way your pet won’t be having any more babies and she can live a healthier life.

Once the puppies and kittens are evaluated at the shelter they will placed up for adoption. Adoption counselors interview potential new homes and the pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and given a microchip before they go home; that way they will not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem.

The Humane Society of Broward County is conveniently located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95. Receiving hours are Monday – Saturday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. The shelter is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from companies and people who want to help us help the homeless animals. For more information call 954-989-3977 or visit our website at www.humanebroward.com to see pets available for adoption, make a donation or find out about upcoming events.

Police, came about in 1920. This is when the Royal North West Mounted Police absorbed the Dominion Police, and headquarters were transferred from Regina to Ottawa. • Woof, woof, woof. Three German shepherds became the first canine members of the force in 1935.

• The last dog sled patrol was in 1969. The patrol traveled from Old Crow, Yukon Territory, to Fort McPherson, N.W.T., a distance of some 500 miles (805 kilometers). There were two teams with a total of 21 dogs.

• Ladies first: In 1981, the first female in the RCMP was promoted to corporal. In 1992, the first female officers were commissioned, and in 1998, the first female Assistant

Commissioner was appointed.

• The British have exploited the image of the Mounties: The BBC television series “Monty Python” featured a group of Mounties singing the chorus in “The Lumberjack Song.”

• The 1990s TV series “Due South” paired a Mountie (and his deaf pet wolf) with a streetwise American detective cleaning up the streets of Chicago. What many viewers found entertaining about the show were the differences in

attitude between the two countries’ police forces.

• Maintiens le Droit is the motto of the RCMP. It is French for “Maintain the Right,” although it is often construed as “Uphold the Law.”

• Today, the RCMP’s scope of operations includes organized crime, terrorism, illicit drugs, economic crimes and offences that threaten the integrity of Canada’s national borders.

• The more familiar name, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, came about in 1920. This is when the Royal North West Mounted Police absorbed the Dominion Police, and

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (MOUNTIES)

Sitting straight atop majestic steeds in their bright red coats, the Mounties present an image that’s almost synonymous with Canada.

• The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began in 1873, when the Canadian Government formed the North-West Mounted Police. They were to ensure peace and order in a wilderness jurisdiction that stretched from the western border of Manitoba to the Rockies and as far north as anyone could go.

• The son of the famous English novelist Charles Dickens was a member of the North-West Mounted Police. Francis Jeffrey Dickens joined on November 4, 1874, and served in the Force until March 1, 1886.

• Today, the RCMP are famous for their distinctive Red Serge, referred to as “Review Order” (of dress uniform) consisting of a high-collared scarlet tunic, midnight blue breeches with yellow leg strip, Sam Browne belt with shoulder cross strap, white sidearm lanyard, brown riding boots, brown Stetson hat (wide, flat-brimmed), and brown gloves. But in the 1800s, the uniform of the North West Mounted Police was similar to the one worn by the British Army. In fact, the very first uniform used by the NWMP was issued from militia stores in Ottawa.

• Stuart Zachary Taylor Wood, the 8th commissioner of the RCMP, was the great grandson of Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States.

• King Edward VII granted the prefix “Royal” in 1904, and the force became known as the Royal North West Mounted • The more familiar name, Royal Canadian Mounted

PROUD MEMBER OF THE BROWARD COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I got a sudden attack of dizziness that landed me in bed. I couldn’t stand. Finally, with the help of my husband, I got to the doctor, who said I had a viral infection called vestibular neuritis. I am taking medicine and am somewhat better, but the dizziness isn’t completely gone. Will it go? When? -- L.T.

ANSWER: I have to warn readers that the causes of dizziness are diverse, and vestibular neuritis, while common, is only one of many causes. The vestibule of the inner ear has three fluid-filled canals that work like a carpenter’s level, that gadget whose center contains a fluid-containing tube with a bubble in it. The balance tells the carpenter if a piece of wood is aligned. The inner ear canals tell people if they are aligned. They send signals to the brain that keep us balanced. A viral infection of those canals or of the nerve that sends signals to the brain makes people feel like they’ve been put in the spin cycle of a washer.

Not only are affected people dizzy, they become nauseated and often throw up.

Symptoms of vestibular neuritis lessen in two to three days, but full recovery can take up to six or more weeks.

A cortisone drug taken within the first three days of illness can ease symptoms. And medicines like promethazine relieve dizziness and nausea, but they make some people so drowsy that they prefer the dizziness.

The booklet on dizziness discusses vestibular neuritis as well as the other dizziness causes. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 17-year-old son is a baseball pitcher. Last week he came home with his pitching arm greatly swollen. I was alarmed, and I told my husband we

needed to take the boy to the emergency room. My husband thought I was overreacting, but I insisted. I am glad I did. He had a blood clot in a vein that caused the swelling. They treated him with medicine to dissolve the clot and put him on a blood thinner. Will he ever pitch again? -- R.C.

ANSWER: I’m sure the ER doctors checked your son for things that make a person prone to form clots. He must not have had any of those conditions. He had an “effort-induced” clot, a clot caused by repetitive physical exertion. Now that the clot has been dissolved, you son should be able to resume pitching after the rest period prescribed by his doctor.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I drink skim milk every day for its protein and calcium. I can’t stand the taste, so I add chocolate syrup to it. Now I heard that chocolate blocks calcium absorption. Is this true? -- J.D.

ANSWER: Oxalate in chocolate can interfere with calcium absorption, but the amount of oxalate added to a glass of milk doesn’t significantly reduce calcium’s entry into the body.

***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box

• Cheese rolling is a sport in England that takes place annually on Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire. This isn’t just any ordinary hill. Cooper’s Hill is so steep that it’s at a 70-degree angle in places. The sport involves a wheel of cheese that’s rolled down hill. The rules are simple: Run after the cheese, and try to be the one that has the cheese at the bottom of the hill.

• Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian sport that was developed during the time of African slavery in Brazil. It’s actually a form of fighting and self-defense, but is done through music, incorporating rhythm and dance. A group of people gather in a circle and take turns getting in the center to spar. In modern times, there is usually no contact, but rather near misses as the sport is more about technique and style than it is about beating up your opponent.

• Underwater hockey? You betcha. Invented in 1954, underwater hockey is exactly what the name implies, but this form of hockey is non-contact. There are two teams of 10 people, but only three from each team are in play at one time. All players wear snorkels and flippers while playing the game. Another difference between underwater and regular ice hockey is that the underwater stick is one foot (30 centimeters) long as opposed to four feet (1 meter) long.

• If you think underwater hockey sounds tough, you haven’t seen underwater rugby. This is a sport with two teams of six players. The object is to get a ball filled with saltwater into a goal to score. The ball must never leave the water. Each team has six players in the water and six substitutes that can switch with a player at any time. A player in this game must have extreme endurance, speed, mobility and strength.

• Disc golf or Frisbee golf has been around since the 1960s but has gained a lot of popularity since then. The rules are similar to golf in that it’s played on a course, the strokes are counted, and the lowest score wins. However, instead of a ball, the players use discs. Instead of a green with sand traps, the course is usually not groomed and may be out in the woods, or at least has wooded terrain. Instead of trying to get a ball in a hole, you try to get your disc into a metal basket.

• Unicycle hockey is like ice hockey or roller hockey but with unicycles instead of skates. Unlike ice hockey, there’s no physical contact with other players. Though there are unicycle hockey teams in the United States, Australia, Canada and other countries, there are only two countries that currently have national leagues: Germany and Great Britain.

• Curling was originally an outdoor sport that originated in 16th century Scotland, but it is now an indoor sport. Since 1998, curling has been an Olympic sport. Two teams of four people each throw polished granite stones down an alley of ice, and then their teammates can help the stones along by sweeping them down the alley with brooms. Scoring is calculated by the way that the stones are strategically placed, and for this reason it is often called “chess on ice.”

• Extreme croquet is closely related to lawn croquet, but the biggest difference between the two is that extreme croquet isn’t played in someone’s backyard. Instead it’s played in rough terrain. The rules are similar, but there are two wickets in extreme croquet as opposed to the single wicket in the backyard version of the game.

• Netball is a particularly fast sport that requires a high level of skill. It was created by an American basketball coach attempting to improve basketball skills. Netball is now played predominantly by women in 25 countries throughout the world, particularly in Australia, New Zealand and England. There are seven players on each team and the aim of the game is to get the ball in the opposing goal hoop as many times as possible throughout a 60-minute match. Each team member plays a specific position and is restricted to an area on the court.

• Man versus horse? Yup. The annual Man Versus Horse Marathon requires stamina and agility. Taking place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells, the marathon puts human contestants up against mounted horse contestants. This unusual sporting event started in 1980, after someone heard two men arguing about whether or not an individual could beat a horse in a cross country race. Soon after, the sport was born.

MUSIC LEGEND:BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

On September 23, 1949, Bruce Springsteen was born, of course, “in the USA.” With his gruff but powerful vocals, the energetic singer has secured his spot on America’s list of rock superstars.

• Springsteen was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and attended Freehold Borough High School. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, was, amongst other things, a bus driver.

• The first song a young Springsteen learned play on the guitar was allegedly the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.”

• In the late 1960s, Springsteen performed briefly in a power rock trio known as Earth, playing in clubs in New Jersey.

• Also around that time, Springsteen acquired the nickname “The Boss.” While playing club gigs with a local band, one of his tasks was to collect the band’s nightly pay and distribute it amongst the members. But Springsteen has never liked the nickname, due to his dislike of bosses.

• Springsteen’s E Street Band has roots in reality. The actual E Street runs northeast through the New Jersey shore town of Belmar. According to Springsteen lore, the band took its name from the street because original keyboard player David Sancious’ mother lived there and allowed the band to rehearse in her house.

• The Boss meets the King? After a 1976 concert in Memphis, Springsteen went to Graceland at three in the morning, jumped the wall and ran to the front door. Security grabbed him before he could make it to the door and sent him packing. Knocking wouldn’t have done much good, anyway. Elvis was in Lake Tahoe at the time.

• In May 1977, Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt went to an Elvis Presley concert in Philadelphia. A few days later Springsteen wrote “Fire,” and allegedly sent a demo of the song to Presley that summer, hoping he might cover it. Whether the tape got sent or not, Presley died that August, and Springsteen wound up giving “Fire” to Robert Gordon. Gordon’s version of the song was covered by the Pointer Sisters who made it a hit in 1979.

• One of his most famous songs, “Thunder Road,” was inspired by the 1958 Robert Mitchum movie of the same name.

• Springsteen has been listened to all over the world, and even in space. During a December 1999 flight of the space shuttle Discovery, his song “Rendezvous” was played as the crew’s wake-up call. It was the third day of the mission, and the crew was scheduled to rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope.

• Springsteen inspires some pretty extreme acts of fandom. Recently, “No Retreat, No Surrender,” a “worst-to-first countdown of every album cut in Springsteen history” came

out. In all, the creators of the list ranked and wrote about (sometimes at length) 200 songs. They ranked “Real Man” from the album “Human Touch” last and “Born to Run” first.

• Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Bono of U2 gave the induction speech. When U2 was inducted in 2005, Springsteen gave their induction speech, returning the favor.

• To date, Springsteen has sold more than 65 million albums (including CDs) in the United States and 120 million worldwide.

Police. MOUNTIES (continued):

headquarters were transferred from Regina to Ottawa.

In 1992, the first female officers were commissioned, and in 1998, the first female Assistant Commissioner was appointed.

What many viewers found entertaining about the show were the differences in attitude between the two countries’ police forces.

• Maintiens le Droit is the motto of the RCMP. It is French for “Maintain the Right,” although it is often construed as “Uphold the Law.”

Today, the RCMP’s scope of operations includes organized crime, terrorism, illicit drugs, economic crimes and offences that threaten the integrity of Canada’s national borders.

Laptop Jack Sky

“The Actor and the Housewife”by Shannon Hale (Bloomsbury USA, $24)

Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

It sounds like the opening scene of a romantic comedy: Two strangers meet one L.A. evening when hugely pregnant Utah housewife Becky Jack literally stumbles into the orbit of Felix Callahan, Hollywood heartthrob and everyone’s favorite movie star. The two have nothing in common ... except a quick, self-deprecating wit and a surprisingly comfortable rapport with one another. It doesn’t take long for them to become pals and eventually, astonishing them both, best friends.Theirs is a platonic bond, not a romantic one, but it’s firm and deep. Not all is sweetness and light, however: Becky and Felix both must face hard questions from others -- and themselves -- about the nature of their relationship, and it’s often a struggle to balance their longing for each other’s company with the needs of the families they love. But though their worlds don’t always mesh, they can never seem to stay apart for long.As Becky and Felix bicker, tease, cry and laugh together, the reader longs to be a part of their connection. Hale does a remarkable job of bringing her characters to life, strengths and weaknesses alike. Felix’s dazzling persona masks a complicated soul, while Becky’s portrayal as a refreshingly normal woman of faith, neither a caricature nor a saint, is a quiet jewel. In their own different ways, the two friends always strive to remain true to themselves, and the story keeps that integrity intact all the way through to its sweetly satisfying ending. On paper, Becky and Felix’s story may seem made for the big screen. Who hasn’t daydreamed about meeting their favorite movie star? But in Hale’s hands, the result is even better than mere wish fulfillment. These friends insist on defying stereotypes and writing their own script, reminding us that real life isn’t always like the movies -- it’s better.

Make and Bake a Rustic Tart With KidsOpportunities for families to experience life’s simplest pleasures abound during August’s final days. They take minimal planning and yield happy rewards. We enjoy impromptu evening bike rides, free concerts in the park or a jaunt in the country to pick berries. On the return home, I choose juicy nectarines, peaches and plums at a roadside stand -- a perfect combination with berries for preparing a delicious rustic fruit tart. Also called a galette, it’s free-form and goes together easily, and the best part is that kids can get actively involved. Tell them they can be the “King and Queen of Tarts” as you show them how to stir, knead and roll out the pliable dough. Actually, it’s perfect play for “royalty” of all ages. For a large family-style “Rustic Fruit Tart” to serve 6-8, you’ll need:

DOUGH1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour plus 3-4 tablespoons for rolling out dough1/2 teaspoon salt10 tablespoons unsalted, cold butter, cut into 1/2-inch chunks3-4 tablespoons ice water

FILLING1 cup berries (I like a combination of blueberries and raspberries or blackberries)2 1/2 cups peeled and thinly sliced fruit such as nectarines, peaches and plums4-5 tablespoons sugar, plus 1 tablespoon for sprinkling1 tablespoon flour1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest (optional)Pinch of salt

Here’s the fun:1. For dough, place flour and salt in a mixing bowl and let kids stir together with clean fingers. Scatter butter chunks into flour mixture, and toss and rub between fingertips until butter is the size of peas. Use a pastry blender, if you prefer. Drizzle ice water over mixture and work it with hands until all the flour is moistened and the dough comes together. Knead a few times on a flour-covered surface, shape into a disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 15-30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 400 F. Remove disk from refrigerator. If it is too hard to roll out, let stand in room temperature 10 minutes. On a floured surface, roll out dough into a 12- to 14-inch circle. Transfer to a parchment-lined rimmed cookie sheet and chill about 15 minutes.

3. Toss together the fruit, sugar, flour, lemon juice, zest and salt. Remove dough from refrigerator.

4. Mound fruit filling in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold border edge up and over fruit mixture in slightly overlapping pleats to form the sides of the tart, but leave the fruit center open 4-5 inches. Remember, it’s rustic, so it doesn’t need to look perfect! Brush dough with a little water, sprinkle with sugar and bake 50-55 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Cool on rack, slide onto a serving plate, slice, and enjoy with vanilla ice cream.

• With school back in session soon (if it’s not already), you can save resources and money by reusing sandwich bags. It seems like such a small thing, but if you’re using the baggie for a sandwich, then just wrap the sandwich in a paper towel (which you can then use as a napkin) or a piece of waxed paper before you stick it in the bag. You can use the same sandwich bag all week long.

• Want to keep your refrigerator operating efficiently? Try these two small tricks: First, clean the gaskets on the door, and replace them if they’re loose. If you close a dollar bill in the door and can pull it out easily, you need to replace the gaskets. Then, stock empty space with jars or pitchers of water. Cold water is refreshing and it helps keep the air

in your fridge cold.

• “Back-to-school clothes shopping can be draining when you have a preteen. I got tired of being the bad guy for say-ing ‘no’ to high-priced items, so I put my son in charge of his shopping budget. We went together, and after we took care of the essentials (undergarments, socks, etc.), he was allowed to spend the rest in a fashion of his own choosing. He quickly saw that one or two high-dollar outfits would eat up his whole budget. He splurged on one thing he loved and spent the rest much more rationally -- without any ugly looks or hard feelings!” -- R.G. in North Carolina

We All Scream for Ice Cream! It’s hot, and like many of you, one of my fa-vorite ways to cool off is with a bowl of ice cream. Vanilla ice cream continues to be America’s flavor of choice. Ice cream’s origins are known to reach back as far as the second century B.C., although no specific date of origin or inventor has been indisputably credited with its discovery. We know that Alex-ander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting. During the Ro-man Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices.More than a thousand years later, Marco Polo returned to Italy from the Far East with a recipe that closely resembled what is now called sherbet. Historians estimate that this recipe evolved into ice cream sometime in the 16th century. England seems to have discovered ice cream at the same time, or perhaps even earlier, than the Italians. “Cream Ice,” as it was called, appeared regularly at the table of Charles I during the 17th century. It wasn’t until 1660 that ice cream was made available to the general public. The Sicilian Pro-copio introduced a recipe blending milk, cream, butter and eggs at CafŽ Procope, the first cafe in Paris. The first official account of ice cream in the New World comes from a letter written in 1744 by a guest of Mary-land Governor William Bladen. Records kept by a Chatham Street, New York, merchant show that President George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream during the summer of 1790. President Thomas Jefferson’s slave

chef, James Hemings, is said to have a favorite 18-step rec-ipe for an ice-cream delicacy that resembled a modern-day Baked Alaska. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented. Manu-facturing ice cream soon became an industry in America, pioneered in 1851 by a Baltimore milk dealer named Jacob Fussell. Due to ongoing technological advances, today’s frozen dairy production in the United States is more than 1.6 billion gallons annually.Wide availability of ice cream in the late 19th century led to new creations. In 1874, the American soda-fountain shop and the profession of the “soda jerk” emerged with the in-vention of the ice-cream soda. In response to religious criti-cism for eating “sinfully” rich ice-cream sodas on Sundays, ice-cream merchants left out the carbonated water and in-vented the ice-cream “Sunday” in the late 1890s. The name was eventually changed to “sundae” to remove any connec-tion with the Sabbath.Today, ice-cream machines make it easy for home cooks to prepare their favorite flavor of this delicious, frozen dessert. Try this wonderful ice-cream recipe, and beat the heat with a frozen treat!

FROZEN CUSTARD ICE CREAM

Don’t let a favorite homemade ice cream using with raw eggs cramp your style with a possible food-borne illness. Substitute an egg-based ice-cream recipe made from a cooked, stirred custard, such as the following recipe and variations from the American Egg Board.

6 eggs2 cups milk 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups whipping cream 1 tablespoon vanilla

1. In medium saucepan, beat together eggs, milk, sugar and salt. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon with a thin film and reaches at least 160 F. Cool quickly by setting pan in ice or cold water and stirring for a few minutes. Cover and refrig-erate until thoroughly chilled, at least one hour.2. When ready to freeze, pour chilled custard, whipping cream and vanilla into 1-gallon ice-cream freezer container. Freeze, according to manufacturer’s directions, until firm. Makes 1 1/2 to 2 quarts.

VARIATIONS: Banana Nut: Reduce vanilla to 1 1/2 teaspoons. Cook and cool as above. Stir three large ripe bananas, mashed, and 1/2 cup chopped, toasted pecans into custard mixture. Freeze as above.

Chocolate: Add three squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate to egg mixture. Cook, cool and freeze as above.

Strawberry: Omit vanilla. Cook and cool as above. Partially freeze. Add 2 cups sweetened, crushed fresh strawberries. Complete freezing.

As the oil begins to evaporate quickly in the Gulf of Mexico and the debate of whether offshore drilling in Florida gets back into high gear, General Motors has began to pitch their $40,000 dollar electric hybrid car. I understand the need to limit our dependence on oil and lower our environmental profile, but until we as consumers change our mind set, the bigger picture of greener living is irrelevant. I ran to one of the big cheap mega stores, or should I say the mega store (no name necessary) and was amazed at the amount of plastic and cardboard surrounding small items in the over stuffed carts. I was even more amazed by the amount of plastic bags they were carried out in.

I have a simple request if you want to help the planet and cut leave a smaller environmental footprint, start small. First, buy in bulk (more products, less casing) and then buy reusable shopping bags. Before you consider buying an echo friendly car or house appliance, make sure you have your day-to-day systems in place.
