TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON

INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

COLUMBUS (continued):• Christopher Columbus was from Genoa, a city on the northwest coast of Italy. He started

sailing when he was a teenager.

• His desire to find a new trade route to Asia in the late 1400s was seen as a foolish undertaking by many. Portugal refused to fund his voyage. Columbus plead a good case with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for the trip. The king and queen wanted a competitive edge over the other European countries and saw trade with the Indies as their opportunity. They said yes.

• There are eight U.S. cities, two counties, and a river named after Christopher Columbus. Also, the District of Columbia, Columbus Circle in New York City, British Columbia Province of Canada and numerous other places in the world bear his name.

• Columbus, Ohio was named after Christopher Columbus. Founded in 1812, it is the largest city and capital of Ohio. It also has one of the best zoos in America. Jack Hanna was the director from 1978-1993 and has been director emeritus since then. He has been a leader in increasing national interest in zoos. The Columbus Zoo has over 6000 animals.

• Colorado was the first state to declare Columbus Day as an official holiday in 1905. It became a U.S. federal holiday in 1970.

• Spain celebrates “National Day” on October 12 in honor of Columbus discovering America.

• Even though Columbus has been given credit in history for discovering the “New World,” Leif Ericson, a Norse Viking, actually set foot on North America in about 1000 A.D.

• Ericson (also spelled Erikson) was the son of Erik the Red, who was exiled from Iceland for murder and other crimes. In his exile, he discovered Greenland. Leif became a sailor like his father, converted to Christianity and was commissioned by King Olaf of Norway to spread Christianity to Greenland. His outlaw dad tried to stop him!

• Leif Ericson actually learned about a land with forests and mountains that another sailor had seen when his ship was blown off course… he was in a hurry to get to Greenland and didn’t bother to explore! That man, Bjarni Herjolfsson, told Leif what he had seen and gave him directions. From most accounts, it seems that Ericson and his crew landed on Newfoundland.

• A lot of people of Nordic descent (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland) settled in the U.S. Upper Midwestern States. Wisconsin, in 1930, became the first state to observe Leif Ericson Day. Congress passed a bill in 1963 for October 9 to be an observance nationwide. Most people are not even aware of this day… unless you live in the Midwest and are of Nordic descent. Canada does not observe a holiday for Leif Ericson.

• Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to take an expedition across the Pacific Ocean. Like Columbus he was in service to Spain even though he was Portuguese. His crew went on to successfully circumnavigate the globe. He discovered a passageway south of Chile and north of Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America, in 1520. At first it was named Strait of All Saints, since the crew entered it on November 1st but was later renamed the Strait of Magellan.

COLUMBUS (continued):

• A Spanish ship, “Our Lady of Atoche,” sank off the coast of Florida in 1620. A hurricane near Key West caused the ship to sink with a heavy load of copper, silver, gold, gems, jewels and tobacco destined for Spain.

• Another ship, the Santa Margarita had run aground near the Atoche. Salvage efforts were successful for the Margarita but the Atoche was not found.

• The cargo of the Atoche was underwater for 363 years when an American treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, and his team of searchers found silver, gold and emeralds on July 20, 1985.

• Many artifacts and valuables from the Atoche and the Santa Margarita are available for the public to see today at the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society and Museum in Key West, Florida.

• Sailing started as a means of transportation for delivering or acquiring goods and is still used for those means today. Many use sailboats, cruise ships and other boat strictly for fun.

• The first yacht club in the world was founded in Cork, Ireland in 1720. America’s New York Yacht Club is one of the most famous clubs and oldest running. It formed in 1844.

• The America’s Cup Yacht Race dates back to 1851, 45 years before the Olympics! The New York Yacht Club was victorious in the race and held the trophy for 132 years, from 1851 to 1983.

• There are still adventurers who love to sail the oceans and seas. With new technology they are certainly more likely to find their way and arrive safely on their journeys. But with the oceans covering about 70.8% or 139 million square miles (361 million square kilometers) there are surely remaining uncharted waters out there!

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:

SPAINSpain is governed by a parliamentary monarchy system, so it has a king and a president. It occupies 85% of the Iberian Peninsula in Southwest Europe. • The remaining 15% of the Iberian Peninsula is Portugal

and a small British Territory at the southeast, Gibralter. You’ve probably heard of the “Rock of Gibralter.” It is real… but it belongs to the British – not Spain. Spain would like to have the property but it was transferred to the British in 1713 in perpetuity (eternity).

• The Strait of Gibralter is a narrow body of water that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Spain and Gibralter are on the north shores and Africa and Morocco on the south. The narrowest point of the Strait of Gibralter puts Europe and Africa only 8.85 miles (14.24 km) apart - 35 minutes by ferry.

• El Estricho Natural Park on the Spanish side of the strait is a protected nature reserve. It is a great place for bird watching since it is on the migratory bird route for many birds.

• From 1936 to 1975 Spain was ruled by the controversial leader, Francisco Franco. He was a dictator known for repression and censorship. After his death, the government changed to the present system. A new constitution was written and adopted in 1978.

• The official language in Spain is Castilian Spanish and the population is approximately 94% Roman Catholic.

SPAIN (continued):

• A famous 20th Century Spaniard was Pablo Picasso. Under the tutelage of his father, a draftsman and painter, he started painting at age nine. His art is found worldwide but he truly had a connection with Barcelona where the Museu Picasso has a permanent collection of 3800 pieces of his art.

• Madrid, the capital city, is very close to the geographical center of Spain.

• Andorra is a tiny country (468 sq. mi. or 1212 sq. km.) located between France and Spain in the Pyrenees Mountains.

• Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe in Spain’s Penibetic Mountains not far from the Mediterranean.

• Have you eaten paella? Valencia, on the east Mediterranean Coast of Spain, is usually given credit for originating this one-dish meal. Rice, vegetables, rabbit, chicken, seafood and olive oil are in abundance in the area. This dish can have all or some of the meats with lots of rice and vegetables. It is cooked over an open fire in a special paella pan… similar to a large frying pan. Find a recipe or a Spanish restaurant and try it!

• Another food topic you may have heard of is the famous (or infamous!) Tomatino Food Fight. Held in Valencia annually in August, usually around 30,000 people participate in the “world’s largest food fight” by hurling tomatoes at each other! Started in 1945, then banned, it was given official recognition in 1959 because of its popularity.

• And…you’ve surely heard of the “Running of the Bulls” in Pamplona. This happens from July 7th-14th as part of the San Fermin Festival. This is dangerous, folks!

COMING IN 3s!Three is an odd number (literally). Triple, triplet, trio, and probably a few other words mean you’re talking about three of something!• If the doctor tells you you’re expecting triplets, congratulations! Today with multiple births happening at an

alarming rate mainly due to fertility drugs… three doesn’t sound so bad.

• The Red River Zoo in Fargo, North Dakota is the proud home of red panda triplets born on June 11, 2009.

• In horse racing, the Triple Crown is the goal to reach for. Three races have to be won to claim the Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes all held within five weeks. Only eleven horses in history have won the Triple Crown. The last was Affirmed in 1978.

• Alexandre Dumas was a French author with very little formal education. He wrote the novel The Three Musketeers in 1844.

• 3 Musketeers® candy bar was introduced in 1932. The original product had three pieces and three flavors: vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.

• Three blind mice, three blind mice,

See how they run, see how they run…

This nursery rhyme is based on English history. Queen Mary I, a staunch Catholic, was the “farmer’s wife” and the three mice were three Protestant noblemen. She didn’t actually “cut off their tails” but she wasn’t nice to them either!

• Lots of commercials, stories and movies use threes… Snap, Crackle, Pop…Rice Krispies; the three little pigs; the three bears; Clint Eastwood in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Charlie’s Angels and more.

• In baseball, a triple is a very good thing… it means the runner hit the ball well enough to run to 3rd base. On the other hand, a triple-play is when there are three outs in one play. A little rare but awesome if your team gets the outs!

• A triplet poem consists of a single verse in three lines, like:

I have a lot of money,

So I’ll go buy some honey

And share it with my bunny.

• Who can forget the Three Stooges? Larry, Moe and Curly… the act started out in 1925 as “Ted Healy and His Stooges.” There were three Howard brothers along with others through fifty years of laughs. The one always there until his death in 1975 was Moe.
