Cook Mountain passes around the world can be high, steep, rocky and just plain challenging to traverse. But they’re worth exploring, so join Tidbits as we look into, over, through and around some famous mountain passes. • So what is a mountain pass? It is the most easily accessible point between mountains where you can “pass” through. The pass is considered the highest point or summit at which you traverse the area. Passes have always been very important finds for pioneers moving across the country, as well as road and rail builders. The definition of a mountain pass is actually: “The location in a range of mountains of a geological formation that is lower than the surrounding peaks.” • Other terms used in North America for a pass are saddle, notch and gap. Pass and saddle are most commonly used in the West, while the East Coast tends to use the terms notch and gap. • Semo La, a pass in central Tibet, at 18,258 feet (5,565 m), is considered to be the highest pass accessible by vehicles. It is a high, isolated place in the Chang Tang region of Tibet. Also in Tibet is the highest mountain pass accessible by train. The Tanggula Pass in the mountains of the same name has a rail station at 16,640 feet (5,072 m). By the way, “La” in Tibetan means pass. turn the page for more!

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Shoveling Snow Is Hardon Heart

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband is 73. I am sure he’s going to die this winter. He insists on shoveling our snow, and we have lots of it. He says it’s good for him; it gives him exercise. This from a man whose other exercise consists of popping open a beer can. He comes in after he’s cleared the walk, puffing and exhausted. Please talk some sense into him. -- M.L.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend has a case of constant hiccups. Can you suggest any possible cures? -- P.W.

ANSWER:Hiccupscomefrominvoluntarycontractionsof the diaphragm, the horizontal muscle sheet that lies between the chest and the abdomen. It is the principalbreathing muscle. Sometimes persistent contractionscan be traced to gallbladder problems, diseases of the pancreas, reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus(heartburn) or an abscess on the abdominal side of thediaphragm. However, most of the time, no cause is found. For temporary hiccups, gulping food and simultaneously swallowing air sometimes brings them on. So cancarbonated beverages.Through the years readers have provided me with hundreds of home remedies for dealing with hiccups, and I welcome new additions. that can end hiccups. Breathing into a paper bag raises the blood carbon-dioxide level, which, in turn, raises blood acidity, and that triggers a release of calcium. Calcium can spark nerve signals to stop hiccups. Putting angostura bitters on the back of the tongue is another sometimes-successful trick.Hiccupsthatlastlongerthan48hoursaren’tlikelytorespond to home remedies. Medicines have to be turned to. Chlorpromazine, omeprazole, metoclopramide and baclofen are often successfully used.In cases that are resistant tomedicine treatment andthat are disrupting a person’s life, doctors can interrupt, in a number of ways, the transmission of nerve signals conducted to the diaphragm by the phrenic nerve.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 34 and have been jogging for 10 years. I do it year-round. I’ve noticed this winter that my knees feel stiff before I run. They don’t hurt during the run or after. THE TETONS

There are many beautiful mountain ranges in the world but few are as recognizable as the peaks in Grand Teton National Park nearJackson,Wyoming. Let’s climb high for someTetonTidbits!

•When Grand Teton National Park was firstestablished in 1929, it only encompassed themountainpeaksandthelakesnearthebase.Ittook years of wrangling with local ranchers, residents, sheepherders, politicians and others for the park to be enlarged.

● The end of the year is a great time to pick up next year’s holiday decorations at a discount. Before you pack away your holiday lights, ornaments, cards, etc., do an inventory and see if you are able to find what you need to complete your look at a slashed price.

● “Keep a small package of antibacterial wipes in your car to clean your hands after pumping gas. Not only is there any potential gas to get off your hands, but those handles don’t get cleaned often, and are very dirty.” -- R.D. in South Carolina

● Computer grocery lists can make not only shopping easier, but organization as well. Keep a

file listing all the items you usually purchase from week to week. You even can create sections based on where certain items are located throughout the store. This will ensure that you don’t miss something, necessitating a return trip to the store. Stay organized to save money.

● “If you have extra papers that are printed only on one side, save them. You can cut them in quarters and staple several sheets together to make scrap-paper pads to keep near the telephone or on the fridge. They are handy, and you’ll be reusing material, which is good for the environment.” -- U.L. in Missouri

● Putting up new calendars? Before you toss your old one, be sure to look through it for important anniversaries, and cut out and save any pictures or art that might be reusable for craft projects.

SHOVELS

The word shovel can be a noun or a verb. ThisTidbits will explore the noun, which is defined as “an instrument for lifting orscooping loose material, such as earth, coal, etc., consisting of a curved blade or a scoop attached to a handle.”

A Burglar’s Solution To Your Aching Back! Here’s how it works. Just think of your back as a safe

with a 3-number combination lock. It’s obvious that one,or even 2 numbers, will never open it—but with allthree, you’ll crack the safe at the drop of a hat. It’s thesame with your back. It’s not a one-size-fits-all problem. If your doctor only uses one technique to help you—when you need 2 or 3—your back will NEVER get better,no matter how hard you try, and you’ll end up thinking...

“Do I Just Have To Live With It?”Why should you put up with pain when you’ve got a

HealthSource clinic right at your fingertips? Youshouldn’t, even if you think there’s no hope.

Why Can’t They Find YOUR Pain?So many folks who come to HealthSource have

been hurting for months–even years–because no onecould figure out WHERE their pain was coming from. That’s why you need a specialist–a pain detective–whoknows...

How to Track Down “Mysterious Pain!”Many back problems can’t be found with an x-ray, an

MRI or a CT scan. Why? Because it takes the mostsophisticated pain detector on the planet to find it—the human hand—and a trained one at that. Forinstance, here’s a common source of severe hip and legpain that’s usually mistaken for a slipped disc. It’scaused by a muscle in the butt-cheek that pinches thesciatic nerve as it passes by. Pain can shoot down yourleg and jab like a knife when you take a step.

5 Simple Solutions To Your Back Pain!(what the drug companies don’t want you to know)

What can be done about it? Well, since pain killersNEVER fix anything, you have to find the cause:

1) Weakness in 2 key muscles...2 easy exercises can bring relief2) Sacroiliac joints restricted...a gentle shift to unlock the hips3) Adhesions (scar tissue) in key bending muscles... amazing flexi-

bility when they’re free again4) Hip restrictions interfere with back movement... an overlooked

cause of deep aching and stiffness5) Binding in the lower spinal joints...shifting the stuck vertebra

can free it FAST—like WD-40!

Remember, at HealthSource you’re NOT just cover-ing up your pain, you’re getting at the hidden source.

A TRAITOR Within!

There’s nothing more disturbing than having a hid-den enemy—like a snake in the grass—lying in wait

and ready to strike! Like when you wake up feelinggreat—with a spring in your step and big plans for theday—and as you reach for your socks, instead, you get...

The Ultimate DOUBLE-CROSS!A sudden jolt of pain and you’re stuck halfway

between standing and sitting. You can’t take a breath, reach for your glasses or wiggle your pinkie. But evenworse is the hot burning pain that’s creeping downyour leg. And as you stand there, bummed out, frus-trated and locked up like a monkey in a cage, you askyourself:

4 Why is this happening to ME?4 Will I ever be OK again?4 Can I ever live a normal life?4 I’ve been good for months—what did I do wrong?4 If I can’t I trust my back, then...

“Who Can I Trust?”And that’s the right question, because when you

go for help, it seems there’s another conspiracy—aminefield of drugs, painful shots and dangerous surgeries. But...let’s face it, when your back hurts, there are really only 4 things you want to know:

4 Can you help me? 4 What brought this on?4 How long will it take? 4 What’s it gonna cost?

That’s why you don’t want to go to someone whogives you pain killers and muscle relaxants—then tellsyou to call back in 2 weeks if you’re not any better.Because...you know what that’s gonna do! Nothing! Just 2 more weeks to let whatever is wrong—getworse! No, you want to dig in and find out what youcan do to REALLY get better—not just hobble alongwasting the best years of your life being only half-fixed—living half a life.

BACK PAIN CONSPIRACY?

If 2012has a theme, itmightwell be theYear of In-creased Internet Fraud. The problems don’t occur asmuch with what we block out with our virus protection as they do with the parts we do let in: email we open andwebsiteswevisit.Onesourcepegstheincreasein“phishing”(gettingyourinformation)at1,200percentinjustthepastsixmonths.It’sonlygoingtogetworse.During the recentholidays, right in themiddleofon-line shopping season, customers received fake messages supposedly from a major online store. The email looked genuine: the content looked right, the subject line was

one that many people would open -- but the sender’s ad-dress was forged, and it asked for personal information. That’s the key right there: When an email or a site wants your data, beware. The collection form might be a dupli-cate of the info-gathering method of the legitimate site and look very authentic.Whatdotheywant?Theywantyourpersonalinformationanywaytheycangetit.Itmightbeadirectstealwhenyouhelpbytypinginyournameandinformation.Itmightbethat you’re tricked into downloading a keystroke logger program that will capture everything you type in.Here are some initial steps you can take to protect your-self:1.Err on the side of caution.Be skeptical.Don’t clickany links, even out of curiosity.
