TIDBITS® INVESTIGATES SOME POPULAR

URBAN LEGENDSby Sarah Bates

Did your mother ever tell you “No swimming for at least an hour!” after you ate lunch? Did you hear the one about the kid who ate Pop Rocks after he drank a soda? Thought they were fishy sounding? Check out what we learned:

#1: Chewing gum takes seven years to di-•gest. FALSE. Chewing gum moves along at the same rate as everything else. There have been some strange digestive cases, but only in children under the age of four who swallowed numerous pieces of gum a day over a period of years.#2: Hair •grows back darker and thicker after you shave it. FALSE. If this were true, balding and graying men could just shave their heads and solve the problem!#3: Don’t swim for at least an hour after •eating or you will get cramps and drown! FALSE. Cramps while swimming can hap-pen regardless of whether or not you’ve just eaten – and they usually happen in your arms and legs, not your stomach. If you do get a cramp, stay calm and float until help arrives or the cramp subsides.

freeze faster than ice cubes made with cold water. FALSE. A tray of hot water and a tray of cold water will freeze into ice cubes in the same amount of time.#20: Cooking metal objects in the micro-•wave will cause your microwave to ex-plode. FALSE. While it won’t explode, you will severely shorten the lifespan of your microwave and probably null the warran-ty, so don’t try this at home.#21: Kentucky Fried Chicken was forced •to change their name to KFC because they use geneticallymodified “chickens”that aren’t considered to be real chick-ens by the FDA. FALSE. KFC changed its name for multiple reasons and mostly because of this: they had started serving more than just fried chicken and didn’t want to be labeled as only serving such. They do not have an army of genetically modified chickens.#22: Domesticated turkeys are so stu-•pid that they will look up at the rain and drown. FALSE. A turkey’s basic instinct is to huddle to its mother for shelter in the rain. A domesticated turkey, often without a mother, still has this instinct and will not know to get out of the rain, which can lead to death from exposure to the elements.

URBAN LEGENDS (continued)#4: Change your shampoo regularly or •your hair will build up a resistance to it. FALSE. Your hair doesn’t build up a re-sistance to shampoo. If you are noticing a difference, test your water. It could be too hard or soft.#5: Brushing your hair 100 strokes before •bedtime will make it shinier and healthier. FALSE. Brushing too much, too hard or with the wrong brush can cause damage to your hair or your scalp.#6: Wearing a hat too much will make you •go bald. FALSE. H a i r loss is caused by ge-net ics, s t r e s s and poor health, not your hat.#7: Here are some useful tips to remove a •tick: Touch it with a lit match, rub it with a cotton swab covered in liquid soap, twist it off, etc. FALSE. The best way to remove a tick is to grab it by the head with a pair tweezers and pull it straight out. Don’t for-get to clean with soap and water and treat with an antibiotic ointment.#8: Coca-Cola products originally con-•tained cocaine. TRUE. Coca-Cola did once contain trace amounts of cocaine, but Coca-Cola products with cocaine were no longer produced after the 1930s.#9: A tooth or nail left in Coca-Cola will •disintegrate over night. FALSE. While not true, anything containing too many sug-ars, like sodas, can weaken the enamel of your teeth over time. Remember to limit your sugary food and beverage intake and brush your teeth daily.#10: If you eat Pop Rocks and drink a •soda, your stomach will swell and possi-bly explode. FALSE. Pop Rocks generate less gas than half of one can of soda. In the absolute worst-case scenario, you will end up with a nice, healthy burp.# 11: Dropped food is okay to eat if you •pick it up within five seconds. FALSE. Once it’s been dropped, it’s been dropped. Anything that is dropped on the floor will pick up just as many germs in that first tenth of a second as it does after five.#12: The playground ball pits at fast •food restaurants are home to venomous snakes and drug paraphernalia. FALSE. There has never been any report of injury or death in a playground ball pit due to snakes, drug needles, etc. If either story were true, they would have garnered in-tense media coverage.

#13: Rice is bad for birds. You shouldn’t •throw it at a wedding. FALSE. A bird could just as soon eat rice in a field as it could on a sidewalk after a wedding. Their little bird tummies will not swell or explode.#14: Please forward this email to all your •friends and family! It is being tracked. For every forward, a well known corporation willdonatefivecentstowardscancerre-search. FALSE. It’s virtually impossible to track an email from forwarding alone. This goes the same for most email chain letters. If you are ever unsure about an email, visit snopes.com, a website dedi-cated to researching hoaxes and urban legends.#15: If everyone boycotted gas stations •on the same day, it would drive the price of gas down. FALSE. To make a substan-tial dent in the price of gas, large numbers of people would have to not buy gas for an extended period of time.#16: JELL-O is made from cow hooves. •TRUE & FALSE. JELL-O isn’t made from cow hooves, but it is made from gela-tin, a product made from the collagen of cows and pigs. Collagen is collected from bones and skins by an extensive process that releases the collagen from the bones, which is then used to make gelatin.#17: Eating carrots can improve your vi-•sion. FALSE. While carrots do contain Vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy eyesight, eating a lot of carrots will not im-prove your vision.#18: Eating turkey will make you fall •asleep. TRUE & FALSE. Turkey does contain the amino acid tryptophan, which helps the body produce a chemical that plays a key role in sleep. However, it is produced in such small amounts that eat-ing turkey isn’t going to make you feel sleepy. When you do get tired after the Thanksgiving meal, that sleepy feeling is more likely caused by the combined ef-forts of a heavy meal full of carbohydrates and your digestive system working in high gear.#19: Ice cubes made with hot water will •

On • May 16, 1849, the New York City Board of Health is finally able to establish a hospital to deal with a cholera epidemic that, before it ends, kills more than 5,000 people. The epidemic began in Dec. 1, 1848, when a shipload of passengers arrived from France. On board were the bodies of seven passengers who had died from cholera on the journey.

On • May 14, 1913, pitcher Walter “The Big Train” Johnson throws his record 56th consecutive scoreless inning, leading his Washington Senators to victory over the St. Louis Browns, 10-5, at Sportsman’s Park

On • May 12, 1925, a Philadelphia radio station broadcasts the first all-star radio program featuring film actors and actresses. Sound films had not yet debuted, and the broadcast marked the first time that most listeners had heard the voices of film stars like Lillian Gish and Marion Davies.

On • May 17, 1930, the radio quiz show “Information Please” is first broadcast. Previously, radio quiz shows generally posed difficult questions to ordinary people. “Information Please” assembled a panel of experts and intellectuals and asked them tricky questions. The show ran until 1948.

On • May 15, 1941, the jet-propelled Gloster-Whittle E 28/39 aircraft flies successfully over Cranwell, England, in the first test of an Allied aircraft using jet propulsion. Its turbojet engine, which produced a powerful thrust of hot air, was devised by Frank Whittle, an English aviation engineer and pilot generally regarded as the father of the jet engine.

On • May 11, 1976, the long-running TV medical drama “Marcus Welby, M.D.” ends. The show, which premiered in 1969, was ABC’s first No. 1 rated series.

On • May 13, 1985, in Philadelphia, police begin evacuating people from their Osage Avenue homes in order to prepare for an operation against MOVE, a radical cult group that had assembled a large arsenal. By the end of the confrontation, 11 people were dead and 61 homes had burned down. In 1986, a jury awarded $1.5 million to three survivors of the MOVE raid.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feel-ings and re-establishing weakened rela-tionships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feel-ings continue to flow from your recent ef-forts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practi-cal view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more at-tention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing self-confidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be-fore you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an at-tempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to De-cember 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But be-fore you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting pri-orities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Cre-ating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life.BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admira-tion of everyone who knows you.

Change A LifeWe’ve all heard from friends, relatives, and day time talk shows about the criminal who started his or her “life of crime” as a teenaged offender. We think to ourselves, “Where were the parents?” and “That kid could have gone on to be somebody better if just given a little love and guidance.” We know that life is full of choices and we must live with them, but we also realize that kids/teenagers some times do not understand the consequences and instead of learning from mistakes, and progressing in a positive way toward adulthood, they feel abandoned and continue to “mess up”. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to turn back time and help one of these “criminals” when they first messed up, when they were young and all they needed was love, guidance and a second chance? There is a severe shortage right now of adults that want to help troubled children. It takes commitment; time, money, and most importantly, it takes heart – but it’s something each of us can do – and receive monetary compensation – as

well as the emotional compensation of a troubled teen becoming a shining star in our society. The Denver Area Youth Services (DAYS), states that they are in need of foster homes for Denver area youth that have been placed in “proctor care”. Proctor care is a term used for children in the foster care system that have had problems with the law. The youth are placed in proctor care only after they have demonstrated positive changes that have enabled them to be placed in the community prior to parole. The youth live in the proctor homes from 4 – 6 months prior to parole.Proctor care provides youth with the opportunity to attend public school, work on their GED, be employed, pay off restitution and/or court fines, complete their community service and participate in individual drug and alcohol and family services. An agency case manager works with the proctor families and youth; offering support and case management services for the program to be successful.

The program provides structured independent living training for the youth while they are in the program. DAYS proctor care provides a realistic setting for these youth to practice the necessary skills that will enable them to parole home or to an independent living setting.DAYS currently needs more foster parents to do this job which includes monetary compensation, but more importantly; provides the love, structure and family these adolescents need in order to move forward as productive members of our society. Please contact the Denver Area Youth Services today by calling (303) 698-2300 or by visiting their web site at www.DenverYouth.org

It was award-winning author Robert A. • Heinlein, widely known as one of the Grand Masters of science fiction, who made the following sage observation: “Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.”Have you ever heard of a claque? Proba-• bly not, since their effectiveness depends largely upon others not knowing they ex-ist. A claque is a group of people who have been hired to make a show seem more successful by applauding the per-formers.In ancient China it was believed that poi-• son would cause anything made of silver to turn black -- which explains why Chi-nese emperors used chopsticks made of the valuable metal.Widely reported in the media this year • have been the 200th anniversary of the births of Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin, but there’s another birthday that’s gotten somewhat less press: This year Guinness turns 250. In was in 1759 that Arthur Guinness started brewing his celebrated beer -- and got a remarkably good real-estate deal, too. He signed a 9,000-year lease on the now-famous St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin, paying 45 British pounds per year for the privi-lege.As summer -- and bathing-suit season -- • approaches, you might be interested to know that the most popular type of cos-metic surgery in the United States is lipo-suction.Most lizards are harmless reptiles, but • there are some that are known to be ven-omous. Rather than avoiding these rare creatures, however, there are some who seek them out for the very venom that makes them dangerous. It seems that there’s a component to the venom that causes blood pressure to drop in humans, which could save thousands of lives.

Thought for the Day: “Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.”

A man hasn’t been feeling well, so he goes to his doctor for a complete check-up. After-ward, the doctor comes out with the results. “I’m afraid I have some very bad news,” the doctor says. “You’re dying, and you don’t have much time left.” “Oh, that’s terrible!” says the man. “How long have I got?” “Ten,” the doctor says sadly. “Ten?” the man asks. “Ten what? Months? Weeks? What?!” The doctor interrupts, “Nine...” When their barn burned down, the old man told his wife: “Don’t worry; we had it in-sured for $50,000.” So the old lady calls the insurance agent, tells him the barn burned down, and asks: “How soon will you send the check for $50,000?” The insurance agent replies: “Well, that’s not exactly how it works. You see, the $50,000 coverage is a maximum. We are going to have to send out an adjuster to determine what the ac-tual value of the barn was, and then we will compensate you for the actual value of your loss.” There is a silence. Then, speaking slowly and quietly, the old lady says: “Oh. Is that how insurance works?” “Yes,” says the agent, “We can only pay you for what the in-sured item was actually worth.” “Well, in that case, I want you to cancel my husband’s life insurance!” “Isn’t the principal a dummy!” said a boy to a girl. “Say, do you know who I am?” asked the girl. “No.” “I’m the principal’s daughter.” “And do you know who I am?” asked the boy. “No,” she replied. “Thank goodness!” Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried to make a bit of small talk with the Na-vajo woman. The old woman just sat silent-ly, looking at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a white bag on the seat next to Sally. “What in bag?” asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the white bag and said, “It’s a box of choco-lates. I got it for my husband.” The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said: “Good trade.”A man tells his friend: “Watch this; I want you to see how stupid my son is!” He calls over his son and says: “I need you to run down to the barber shop to see if I’m there,

and then come back and let me know.” “Sure, dad,” the boy says as he runs out the door. Down on the street, the boy runs into his friend, and tells him: “You wouldn’t be-lieve how stupid my father is. He just asked me to run down to the barber shop to see if he’s there. What a dope! All he had to do would have been to pick up the phone, call the barbershop, and ask!” A waiter asks two customers sitting at a table if either of them would like something to drink. The first one says: “I’ll just have a glass of water, please.” The second one says: “I would also like some water, but please make sure you bring it in a clean glass.” The waiter leaves, and five minutes later he is back with two glasses of water. “Who get’s the water in the clean glass?” asks the waiter. The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years, whereby the auto makers were installing black box voice recorders in four-wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to de-termine, in fatal accidents, the circumstanc-es in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 44 of the 50 states the recorded last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, “Oh, my God!” Only the states of Oklahoma, Tennes-see, Arkansas, Alabama and Texas were dif-ferent. There, 89.3 percent of the final words were: “Hold my beer and watch this.”
