1. Games Overview

In 2020, Tokyo and Japan will become the stage for the world’s greatest sporting spectacle! In 2020, Tokyo and Japan will once again host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, over half a century since the Games were staged here in 1964.Thousands of athletes, Games officials and spectators will gather in Tokyo and Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Games. The Games will generate great excitement and emotions throughout Japan and the world. They will set the stage for new Games records and create lifetime memories for everyone.

Olympic SportsA total of 33 different sports will be contested at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The 2020 Games are also the first time that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has enabled the Organising Committee to propose additional sports for that edition of the Olympic Games. The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee proposed the five additional sports of Baseball/Softball, Karate, Skateboarding, Sport Climbing and Surfing. All five were approved by the IOC for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Venue Plan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 consists predominantly of two thematic and operational zones: the "Heritage Zone" which houses several iconic venues used at the Tokyo 1964 Games and further sustains the enduring legacy of Tokyo 1964; and the "Tokyo Bay Zone" which serves as a model for innovative urban development and symbolises the exciting future of the city. These two zones expand across the city to form an ‘infinity’ symbol with the Athletes' Village positioned at the point where the two zones intersect - at the physical and spiritual heart of the Games. The ‘infinity’ symbol embodies the boundless passion, commitment and inspiration of the world's elite athletes, the limitless potential of future generations, and the lasting legacy that will be passed on to the people of Tokyo, Japan and the world.

Games Venue

Many existing venues will be used for the Tokyo 2020 Games including several legacy venues from the Tokyo 1964 Games. A total of 43 venues in Tokyo and around Japan will be used for the 2020 Games.

This facility is one of the legacy venues of the 1964 Olympic Games.It served as the main arena for Tokyo 1964, hosting the gymnastics events and water polo, which was held in the venue’s indoor pool.

This venue is the spiritual home of the Japanese national sport of sumo wrestling. The interior is designed in a bowl shape to allow spectators to easily view the sumo bouts in the centre of the auditorium from wherever they are seated.

The Imperial Palace Garden is a large lawned area dotted with black pinetrees and surrounded by the moat from the original Edo Castle. The garden features the castle gates and several other historical constructions and is famed throughout Japan for its perfect blend of nature and history.

This venue will be used as the start line for the Cycling Road Race. The park is surrounded by the wide expanse of Musashino Forest, and both riders and spectators will be able to enjoy lush greenery and beautiful views.

The Nippon Budokan is known as the spiritual home of Japanese martial arts - especially judo. At the 1964 Games, judo made its debut as an Olympic sport, with competitions being held here.

This course is planned for construction in the Ariake district, which is located in the stunning waterfront area close to the Athletes’ Village and the Big Sight venue, which will house the IBC and the MPC.The venue will constitute one of the main centres for urban sports.

Surfing will be making its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and competitions will be held here. Boasting world-class waves, this beach attracts lots of surfers each year. The beach is located in Ichinomiya town on Chiba Prefecture’s Pacific coastline.

This large-scale convention centre spans some 210,000 square metres and consists of three major zones - the International Exhibition Hall, the International Conference Hall, and the Makuhari Event Hall. The centre is located in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture.

This stadium is home to one Japanese professional football team and one baseball team. This all-weather dome-shaped stadium is located in Sapporo City in Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido.

This off-road course located in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, will be re-designed and re-built for the Tokyo 2020 Games and will feature a lot of ups and downs over its 4,100m in length.

Located in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium is a dedicated football stadium with a natural grass pitch and excellent views from all seats. The stadium is home to the Japanese professional football team.

The Enoshima Yacht Harbour is located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture and was constructed for use at the 1964 Games, making it yet another 1964 Olympic legacy venue. This venue is Japan’s firstever harbour capable of hosting water sport competitions.

Located in Yokohama Park, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Yokohama Stadium is Japan’s first ever multi-purpose stadium. It also serves as home to one of Japan’s professional baseball teams. The roof that covers spectator seating at the Miyagi Stadium was designed to evoke images of the crescent moon that adorned the helmet of Date Masamune, a 16th century feudal lord who reigned over an area that includes the present-day Miyagi Prefecture. The stadium is situated in the town of Rifu in Miyagi Prefecture and is mainly used to stage athletics competitions and football matches.

This golf course extends out across the verdant Musashino Hills. The club has a history spanning over 80 years, and the course was designed by golf architects who understood the importance of preserving and passing on the traditions of golf to future generations. The club is located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture.

Spanning some 265,700 square metres, Tokyo Big Sight is the largest convention and exhibition centre in Japan. During the Tokyo 2020 Games, the complex will house the International Broadcast Centre and the Main Press Centre.

When purchasing tickets, applicants will be required to verify their telephone numbers.

Please note that during the ticket application and purchasing process, we will be implementing a verification procedure to confirm the identity of individual applicants as part of our measures to prevent the unlawful resale of tickets.We will request all applicants who entered their telephone number during the registration process for the Tokyo 2020 ID to call a number beginning with the three digits 050 (a verification code) from the telephone number they specified in the registration process. The verification system will then confirm whether or not the registered telephone number was used.

There is a limit on the number of tickets that can be bought per applicant.*Please note that applicants cannot obtaining multiple IDs to take part in the ticket lottery multiple times. In addition, the applicant will be disqualified from using related services.

*Throughout the sales period, the maximum number of tickets that can be requested for each session per ID is as follows.*Maximum number of tickets that can be requested for the 1st and 2nd choice is 60 tickets, and of which 30 tickets can be won/purchased.

*The combination of “a general ticket, wheelchair ticket and companion ticket” and the “TOKYO 2020 Group Ticket cannot be requested together for the same session. Ticket lottery results will be announced on 20 June 2019 (TBD)If the number of applications exceed the number of tickets to be sold, the lottery winner will be selected in a lottery process. From 20 June, we will inform applicants of their lottery result for each of the sessions and seat category applied. We will also notify applicants if the tickets are of their Cascade or Second Choice Selection option. We will also send a notification to the applicants registered e-mail address. However, applicants are also strongly advised to check the “My Ticket” page of the Official Ticket Sales website for their lottery results.

Please note that spectators may be asked to show their ID at the venue. Please be sure to carry some form of identification with your name when entering the venue. Failure to provide an ID may result in the denial of entry into the venue. In addition, individuals who have entered the venue may be asked to confirm the contact details of the ticket purchaser.

Swimmers compete to achieve the fastest time while covering

a designated distance using a predetermined stroke (freestyle,

backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly). Although no specific

stroke is prescribed for freestyle events, all swimmers

currently use the crawl, which is the fastest stroke.

At Rio 2016, 32 men’s and women’s events were held in the

pool, including individual and relay races. At Tokyo 2020,

there will be 35 events, with the addition of three new

competitions: Men 800m freestyle, Women 1,500m freestyle

and Mixed 4×100m medley relay.

10km marathon swimming, which was adopted as an official

Olympic event at the Beijing 2008 Games, is held in open

water such as the ocean, a river or lake.

The sport’s International Federation FINA was formed during

the London 1908 Olympic Games, when a pool was used for

the first time

in Olympic

and rules were

standardised.

There are two Olympic Diving events: •Springboard, in which athletes use a three-metre duralumin diving board to generate bounce so that they can perform acrobatic manoeuvres in the air; and

•Platform, in which athletes dive from a 10-metre-high fixed platform.

Dives are differentiated by the direction the diver faces for take-off, the direction of somersaults and twists performed, and whether the dive starts from a handstand. Scoring is based on factors including the beauty of a diver’s movements, which combine three types of rotation (straight, pike and tuck), and the lack of splash upon entry into the water. Synchronised diving is additionally scored on how well two

divers match each other’s movements. Points are deducted from a perfect score of 10.Deciding whether an entry into the water is good or bad is part of the sport’s appeal to spectators. At Olympic level, the world’s top divers create almost no splash at all, just bubbling foam on the surface. Such a clean entry is called a ‘rip entry’.

In a pool at least 3m deep, 20m wide and 25m long, each

team completes a technical routine that includes a set

of eight designated movements lasting two minutes 20-

50 seconds, as well as a free routine lasting three to four

minutes. The routines are performed to music. Performances

are scored, and teams ranked, on synchronisation, difficulty,

technique and choreography.

Athletes wear beautifully decorated swimsuits and waterproof

make-up. They often perform choreography and use music

Water polo traces its origins to England in the 1860s,

where games were staged in lakes, rivers and the sea as a

demonstration of strength and swimming skill. Rules were

soon devised to prevent injury due to the intensely physical

nature of these early events. Water Polo entered the Olympic

programme at the Paris 1900 Games for men and the Sydney

2000 Games for women.

Two teams compete to throw the ball into their opponent’s goal. Each consists of seven players, including a goalkeeper, and all play without their feet ever touching the bottom.

Taking place in open water environments such as the sea, rivers and lakes, but with a premium on safety, the men’s and women’s 10km open water swimming event is known as the marathon swimming event. This event is a relative newcomer to the Olympic programme, making its debut as an official Olympic event at the Beijing 2008 Games. Usually staged on a circular course, the swimmers receive water at regular individuals as their endurance is tested to the full for up to two hours. Naturally, records are important, but as the races are often determined by weather and the open water conditions, planning a strategy is of vital importance. The swimmers who are able to use the waves, tides and currents to their best advantage are often those who post the best results. Being in tip-top physical condition is a given, but there also many swimmers with a wealth of experience in

skilfully responding to the prevailing conditions and planning the optimal strategies. Watching the competitors swimming neck-and neck and overtaking each other makes for great spectator viewing.

The object of archery is simple: to shoot arrows as close to

the centre of a target as possible. Olympic Archery targets are

122 centimetres in diameter with a series of ten concentric

scoring rings, separated into five colours. The inner colour,

the gold, scores ten or nine points. (The ‘ten’ measures just

12.2 cm in diameter - about the size of a music CD.) The red

scores eight or seven points, blue six or five points, black four

or three points, white two or one point. Archers shoot at the

target from a distance of 70 metres - a longer distance than

the length of an Olympic swimming pool.

It goes without saying that this task demands considerable

skill, but the sport is also one where the slightest distraction

can lead to a miss, making mental strength the key to victory.

The best competitors can shoot with extraordinary accuracy

while maintaining their focus in the most stressful situations.

Archery demands immense reserves of skill and concentration to shoot arrows at targets positioned 70 metres away with unerring accuracy.

Athletics

Athletics is the largest single sport at the Games, with the programme divided into track, field and road events. The concept of running faster than your rivals is simple but every aspect of an athlete’s performance must be perfect to win gold.

The Athletics track at the Olympic Stadium is a 400-metre oval - for all track events the finish line is in the same place, at the end of the ‘home straight’. The track programme comprises sprints, middle-distance and long-distance events for men and women; hurdles and steeplechase races; and relays. Most events start with heats, with the fastest athletes or teams progressing to semi-finals and then the final.To become the fastest human being at a particular distance requires not only speed but also supreme fitness, strength and the ability to conquer challenging techniques, such as the start in sprints and clearing the barriers in hurdles and steeplechase events. Short-distance sprint races are the 100m, 200m and 400m. These six men’s and women’s events, along with four men’s and women’s hurdles events, employ a crouching start using starting blocks. The current men’s 100m world record is 9.58 seconds, set by the greatest sprinter in history, Usain Bolt (Jamaica), at the IAAF World Championships in 2009. Remarkably, any athlete running the distance in under ten seconds covers ten metres in less than one second.

In the field, jumping or throwing a greater height or distance than your rivals is the key to winning gold.

Track and field Athletics at Tokyo 2020 will take place in the Olympic Stadium. Within and around the track are the fields of play for the field events - High Jump and Pole Vault landing areas, Long Jump and Triple Jump pits, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw and Shot Put circles, and Javelin Throw runways.Unlike track events, athletes do not compete at the same time in field events. Each competitor takes their turn, and standings are determined by the height or distance they achieve. Field events start with a qualification stage, with the best athletes qualifying for the final.The men’s programme has been unchanged since the Javelin Throw was added at London 1908. The women’s programme is now identical to the men’s, after the Triple Jump was added at Atlanta 1996 and the Pole Vault and Hammer Throw at Sydney 2000.

The Olympic Marathon and race walking events are held on

public roads, with spectators lining the route to cheer the

athletes.

Legend has it that the Marathon can be traced back to

a young soldier in the fifth century BC who ran from the

battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the

Persian army had been defeated, exclaiming “we have won”

before collapsing and dying. The event takes its name from

the battlefield. It has been part of every Games since Athens

1896, with the women’s Marathon added at Los Angeles

1984, and is one of the most iconic Olympic events.

Race walking is distinguished from running races in that one

foot must always be in contact with the ground. In addition,

the knee cannot be bent from the time the front foot comes

into contact with the ground until the vertical upright

position. Race walking was held as a track event on a 3500m

course at the London 1908 Games, and has been held on

roads since Los Angeles 1932.

On the road, athletes require both physical and mental endurance to compete over gruelling distances.

In Baseball, two teams of nine players seek to score the most

‘runs’ by striking a ball and running round a sequence of

bases to reach the ‘home plate’. The teams alternate between

batting and fielding, each session of which is called an ‘inning’,

switching roles when the fielding team gets three opposing

players out. The team with more runs after nine innings wins.

If two teams are tied after 9th inning, the game will go into

extra inning (s).

Baseball was played as a ‘demonstration sport’ at a number of

editions of the Games before being adopted as a medal sport

at Barcelona 1992. The sport was contested until Beijing

2008, then removed from the programme.

Given the popularity of Baseball in Japan, an invitation by

the International Olympic Committee for the host country

to propose the temporary inclusion of additional events saw

the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee propose both men's

Baseball and women's Softball.

Last contested at Beijing 2008, Baseball and its sister sport Softball have been reinstated to the Olympic programme and will form part of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Softball is thought to have begun in the USA as an indoor version of Baseball,

so the latter could continue to be played during the off-season. The rules of

both sports are very similar in terms of gameplay, with two teams of nine

players seeking to score the most ‘runs’ by striking a ball and running round

fielding wins. If the teams are tied after seven innings, the game goes into a

tie-breaker with adapted rules to accelerate scoring and provide a quick finish.

A sport loved by people of all ages the world over rejoins the Olympic programme for the first time since the Beijing 2008 Games.

Basketball (3x3 Basketball)

3x3 Basketball has long been a Basketball format played

informally in streets and gyms across the world. Since the

1990s, the number of 3x3 Basketball events and competitions

has been steadily growing and the format boasts more than

400,000 players globally. Its inclusion at Tokyo 2020 reflects

a desire for the Games to include more youthful and urban

sports.

3x3 Basketball is played by teams of three on a half-court

with one basket. Games last 10 minutes or until a team scores

21 points. The three-point line in conventional basketball

serves as the two-point line in 3x3 Basketball, with shots

made outside the line earning two points and those inside it

one (free throws also earn a single point). The non-stop music

and entertainment on the court between and during the game

bring an authentic urban culture atmosphere, which attracts a

new young audience to the games.

Basketball is played by two teams of five players on an indoor

court that is 28 metres long and 15m wide. Points are scored

by shooting the ball into your opponents’ net (or 'basket'), which

has a diameter of 450-459mm and sits on a backboard 3.05m

above the floor.

Two points are awarded for a regular shot from open play; one

point for each successful free throw (following an opposition

infringement); and three points for a shot from distance (beyond

what’s known as the three-point line, 6.75m from the basket).

Games last for 40 minutes, split into four 10-minute quarters.

Men’s Basketball first appeared on the Olympic programme

at the Berlin 1936 Games, with the women’s competition

introduced at Montreal 1976. Professional players first

competed at Barcelona 1992, when the famous USA ‘Dream

Team’ won gold in the men’s event. Since then, American teams

consisting of successive generations of NBA stars have grabbed

the attention of sports fans worldwide.

Fast breaks, free throws and the full-court press are all features of basketball, which never fails to excite at every edition of the Olympic Games

Canoeing, a common aquatic transportation method used worldwide

dating few thousand years back, but it wasn’t until the middle of the

19th century that the first official canoe and kayak races were held,

in Great Britain.

The sport now takes two forms: fiercely competitive Canoe Sprint,

in which athletes compete head-to-head on a straight course; and

spectacular Canoe Slalom, in which athletes negotiate a series

of suspended gates while descending a rapidly flowing current as

quickly as possible.

The bicycle was invented in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, it has been used for sport.

Racing on wooden indoor tracks regularly drew large crowds as early as 1870. Cycling has been a

constant feature of the modern Olympic programme with new disciplines and events being added

constantly.

Indoor races are held on an oval shaped track (which for the Olympic Games must have a lap length

of 250 metres) known as Velodrome. Road events take place on public roads. BMX and Mountain

Bike events are staged on rugged courses.

At Athens 1896, a Road Race and five Track events were held. Mountain Bike was first included at

Atlanta 1996 with BMX following at the Beijing 2008 Games.

Women first competed in Cycling at Los Angeles 1984, when they took part in the Road Race, with

Track events included since Seoul 1988. The London 2012 Games were the first at which men and

women competed in the same number of events in all Cycling disciplines.

Cycling has been an Olympic sport since the first modern Games at Athens 1896. The sport has five exciting disciplines: Track, Road, Mountain Bike, BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle.

Equestrian became an Olympic sport at the Paris 1900 Games. It then disappeared until Stockholm

1912 but has been included in the programme ever since. Individual and team medals are awarded

in each of the three Equestrian disciplines.

Success demands complete harmony and trust between human and animal, with the rider

communicating through their hands on the reins, legs and shifts in body weight to encourage the

horse to respond. Indeed, the qualities of the horse are tested to the same extent as those of the

athlete.

Equestrian comprises three disciplines: Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. This is the only Olympic sport that involves animals, and also men and women competing on equal terms.

Two competitors, each holding a sword in one hand, face

each other to strike and defense their opponent on a valid

target area of the body. There are three different events such

as Foil, Epee, and Sabre. Weapons, target area, and priority

rules are different among those events. A conductive panel

known as a ‘piste’ is laid as a competing area.

Fencing has featured in every modern Olympic Games since

1896, known as the Games of the I Olympiad starting with

Men’s Foil Individual and Men’s Sabre Individual. Women’s

Foil Individual was added at the Paris 1924 Games, Women’s

Epee Individual was added at the Atlanta 1996 Games, and

Women’s Sabre Individual was added at the Athens 2004. In

Tokyo 2020 Games, all 12 events (Foil/Epee/Sabre, Women/

Men, Individual/Team) are finally lined up to be organised.

The objective of fencing is to strike your opponent while avoiding being hit yourself. The fastest sword strikes in a flash of a blade.

In Football, teams of 11 players compete to score goals by advancing the

ball into their opponent’s goal. Since all that’s needed to play is a ball, the

sport is enjoyed worldwide on every continent. Football is played by over 250

million people in more than 200 countries and regions.

The Laws of the Game were drawn up in London in 1863 at a meeting of the

newly founded Football Association. The FIFA World Cup, which has been held

every four years since 1930, is a major event that attracts high television

ratings worldwide.

Men’s Olympic Football actually has a longer history than the FIFA World Cup:

it has been played at every Games since Paris 1900, with the sole exception

of Los Angeles 1932. Until Los Angeles 1984, participation was restricted to

amateur players. Now, the Games serve as a global showcase for young talent

and the competition generates high levels of interest.

The emphasis on young players is due to a rule, introduced at the Barcelona

1992 Games, that imposed a maximum age of 23. Since Atlanta 1996, teams

have been allowed to include three over-age players.

The women’s competition was added at the Atlanta 1996 Games. There

are no age restrictions. The inclusion of women’s Football in the Games

programme has contributed greatly to its growing popularity and development

around the world.

Spread across seven major venues around Japan, the Olympic Football tournament will offer all the excitement that fans of the game have come to expect from major international competitions.

Golf consists of striking a ball into a series of holes using a club and counting the number of strokes it takes to do. An official sport at the Paris 1900 and St. Louis 1904 Games, Golf then vanished from the programme until it returned at Rio 2016 .There are two main tournament formats: match play, in which golfers compete hole by hole; and stroke play, in which the total number of shots taken is counted. Stroke play is used at the Games, with athletes playing four rounds of 18 holes over four days, giving a total of 72 holes. Sixty men and sixty women participate, based on the world rankings as compiled by the International Golf Federation [ link to: www.igfgolf.org ] Each hole is assigned a prodetermined number of strokes: for example, three, four or five, depending on its difficulty and length from the teeing area.In case players succeed in hitting the ball into the hole with the exact number of strokes, it is said "par." two strokes less than the number is "eagle."On the other hand, the case of finishing the hole with one stroke more than the prodetermined number is called "bogey" and two strokes over the number is "double bogey."

Artistic Gymnastics has been part of the Olympic programme

since the first modern Games of Athens 1896. Initially for men

only, women’s events were included from Amsterdam 1928.

Male gymnasts compete in six events: floor, pommel horse,

rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. In the women's

division, there are four events: vault, uneven bars, balance

beam and floor. Men and women compete for team, individual

all-around and individual apparatus titles.

Each piece of apparatus makes unique demands on the

athlete, testing their strength, agility, coordination, speed and

stamina. Women's floor routines are performed to musical

accompaniment, adding an additional dimension to the

competition. Judges mark each athlete on the complexity

and aesthetics of their executed techniques while considering

other aspects such as balance and stability.

Rhythmic gymnasts are scored on the artistry of their

performances, which are set to music, and the skill with which

they execute difficult maneuvers with the handheld apparatus.

The sport’s uniqueness lies in this combination of musical

interpretation with the risk of throwing the apparatus several

metres into the air and losing sight of it while performing

leaps, turns or acrobatic routines, then catching it. Rhythmic

Gymnasts are gymnasts possessing immense strength,

speed, skill and flexibility, but they are also artists capable

of profound and

expressive beauty.

Rhythmic Gymnastics is one of three disciplines in the sport of Gymnastics. The others are Artistic Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics. Female gymnasts perform expressive and acrobatic moves with the aid of handheld apparatus - a hoop, ball, pair of clubs and ribbon for individual. And also Group competition is five balls and three hoops-two pairs of clubs.

Trampoline gymnasts perform a series of short routines

containing a variety of twists, bounces and somersaults.

Precise technique and perfect body control are vital for

success, with judges delivering marks for difficulty, execution

and flight time.

The trampoline itself consists of a rectangular ‘bed’ made

from a woven synthetic fabric and measuring 4.28 m x 2.14m.

The bed is attached to a frame with steel springs so that its

recoil action propels performers high into the air.

Initially used as a training tool for astronauts, pilots and

other sports, the trampoline grew in popularity to such an

extent that the first ever World Championships were held in

London in 1964. The discipline was added to the Olympic

programme at

Sydney 2000 and

features men’s and

women’s individual

competitions.

Trampoline is one of the three disciplines in the sport of Gymnastics. The others are Artistic Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics. With gymnasts springing to heights of up to 8m, trampoline is among the Games’ most enthralling spectacles.

In Handball, teams of seven players pass and dribble a

ball with their hands. The aim is to throw the ball into the

opposition’s goal, which happens often: spectators might see

50 goals or more in a single match.

Handball was developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany

in the late 19th century. Originally played outdoors as

field handball, the sport first appeared at the Berlin 1936

Games. The modern indoor version made its Olympic debut

at Munich 1972. The first women’s competition was held at

the Montreal 1976 Games. Handball has featured at every

Olympic Games since. The international Handball Federation

was founded in 1946 and has more than 200 member

countries and regions.

Twelve teams will compete in both the men’s and women’s

competitions at Tokyo 2020, with the top eight nations

moving beyond the group stage into a knockout format.

Handball is an all-action team game played on the largest court of any Olympic indoor ball sport.

Hockey players use hook-shaped sticks to advance a hard ball towards their opponents’ goal. Matches are played over four 15-minute quarters (for a total of 60 minutes), after which the team with the most goals wins.Each team is made up of attackers, midfielders and defenders plus a goalkeeper, with rolling substitutions permitted. Other than the goalkeepers, no players are allowed to touch the ball with their hands or feet; instead, they control the ball, which is about the size of a baseball but slightly lighter, using the flat side of their sticks.A hockey pitch is 91.4m long and 55m wide, with goals at each end that are smaller than those in Football. Each goal is surrounded by a D-shaped shooting circle. To take a shot on goal, players must be inside their

opponents’ shooting circle.Another feature of the game is the absence of offside. When this was done away with in a revision to the sport’s rules in 1996, the result was even faster gameplay and more goals.Two umpires control the match. They each monitor half the pitch and work together on decisions in the middle. For certain fouls, usually in the shooting circle, teams are awarded a penalty corner, where a player pushes the ball out from the back line to team-mates waiting around the shooting circle. They can then take a shot on goal against only five defenders. At other times a penalty stroke is awarded, where one player takes a shot from the penalty spot, defended only by the goalkeeper.

Hockey demands speed, stamina and a mastery of intricate hand-eye coordination. Played by teams of 11 on an outdoor pitch, the sport has long been a popular feature of the Games programme.

Judo was introduced as an Olympic sport for men at the Tokyo

1964 Games. The event took place at the Nippon Budokan.

Judo will return to the same venue for Tokyo 2020.

The objective of Judo is to throw or takedown an opponent

to the ground; subdue them with a pinning hold, or force

them to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Athletes (known

as judoka) wearing white or blue judogi (judo uniforms)

face each other on a 10 x 10 metre mat and deploy any

of the 100 techniques available. These are divided into

68 nagewaza (throwing techniques) and 32 katamewaza

(grappling techniques).

The highest score a judoka can earn is “Ippon”, it is the

ultimate way to claim victory in the match and is the

highest score in judo. After Ippon is scored, the match is

over. A judgment of Ippon for a throwing technique puts the

opponent on their back with strength, speed and control. If a

throw or other technique is successfully executed but all the

requirements for ippon are not met, waza-ari (a half-point)

is awarded. Two waza-ari’s in one match is the equivalent

of Ippon. Penalties can also be awarded for passivity or

behaviour deemed contrary to the spirit of Judo.

If scores are tied, the bout goes into ‘Golden score’ or

overtime. The first contestant to achieve a further score wins.

Judoka execute these techniques in the blink of an eye and an

athlete behind on points can often achieve a major turnaround

in the final seconds of a match. This is a sport where you

can't look away for a moment.

Broadly speaking, Karate competition consists of kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Kata are demonstrations of forms consisting of a series of offensive and defensive movements targeting a virtual opponent. Competitors choose the kata they will demonstrate from 102 that are recognised by the World Karate Federation. Key factors include the strength, speed, rhythm, balance and power of strikes and kicks; the solidity, clarity and force of movements; and the proper expression of the meaning of each technique with beautiful, flowing motion. Competitors are required to demonstrate movement that is both slow and fast, and weak and strong, along with focus and concentration.In sparring, two karateka face each other in a matted competition area measuring 8m x 8m. Competitors wear a traditional Karate suit known as a gi. Three offensive techniques are allowed: striking, kicking and punching. Athletes must land a series of blows on the target area of their opponent’s body with explosive energy and also with

precision. Attacks with good form, power and control earn between one and three points. A competitor wins by amassing eight points more than their opponent within the duration of the bout or by gaining more points than their opponent in the allotted time (three minutes for men and women). In the event of a tie, the competitor who scored the first point is the winner.

Karate will make its first appearance on the Games programme at Tokyo 2020, with men and women competing in kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) events at the Nippon Budokan.

According to a 19th-century story, a young French cavalry

officer was sent on horseback to deliver a message.

To complete his mission, he had to ride, fence, shoot,

swim and run. These are the five challenges that face

competitors in Modern Pentathlon - all in a single day.

Baron de Coubertin was an admirer of the Pentathlon

held in the ancient Olympic Games, which was modelled

on the skills needed by a soldier at the time. He proposed

a similar competition which embraced the spirit of its

ancient counterpart. It was de Coubertin’s belief that

this sport, above all others, would test ‘a man’s moral

qualities as much as his physical resources and skills,

producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete’.

Modern Pentathlon was first held at the Stockholm 1912

Games, with a women’s competition introduced at Sydney

2000. Originally the elements were spread over four or

five days, but since Atlanta 1996 the competition has

been completed in a single day.

Since the move to a one-day format, Modern Pentathlon

has become a more all-round sport that pushes athletes

to their limits. Only those with exceptional physical and

mental endurance allied to skill in all five elements can

take home the gold.

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM)

was founded in 1948 and its various efforts have led to

its growth to more than 100 member countries, reflecting

the steady spread of the sport worldwide.

Modern Pentathlon was championed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, as a test of all-round sporting prowess.

Rowing involves propelling a boat using oars along a 2,000-metre

straight-line course. Unlike Canoeing, where athletes face forward, rowers

sit with their backs to the direction of movement. They have their feet

secured to the boat while their seat slides backwards and forwards along

rails as they pull on the oars.

Although its history dates back centuries, rowing only came of age as a

competitive sport in the last 200 years. Interest began to increase after

Oxford and Cambridge Universities began their famous rivalry on the River

Thames in London in 1829, a rivalry that continues today in the shape

of the annual Boat Race. Rowing has been staged at every Games since

making its debut on the Olympic programme in 1900 in Paris, after the

rowing event at the 1896 Games was cancelled due to bad weather.

Women’s events were introduced at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

Rowing is broadly classified into sculling and sweep events. Sculling

involves holding one oar in each hand, while in sweep events a single oar

is held with both hands.

Sculling events include the single, double and quadruple sculls, while

sweep events include the pairs, fours and eights. Only the eights

have a coxswain, who steers the boat, while the other two events are

coxless. There is one lightweight event for men and one for women. The

lightweight category for men requires that crews have an average weight

of 70kg or lighter and no rower may weigh over 72.5kg; for female crews

the maximum average weight is 57kg and no rower may weigh over 59kg.

There will be seven men’s and seven women’s events in the Tokyo 2020

Olympic regatta.

Legendary displays of strength and stamina can be seen in the only sport where competitors cross the finish line backwards.

The aim of Rugby is to convey an oval-shaped ball to the goal

line located at the opposing team’s end of the field and earn

points for doing so. This is achieved by running with the ball,

passing and kicking it. Rugby differs from other ball sports in

that the ball must be passed backwards between players as

they advance towards their opponents’ goal line. Much of the

sport’s appeal lies in the players’ speedy interplay and total

commitment.

Rugby’s roots can be traced back to the sport of football as it

was played in English public schools during the 19th century.

During a football match at Rugby School in 1823, a young

player named William Webb-Ellis suddenly picked up the ball

and ran with it towards the goal. His act marked the creation

of a totally new sport.

Rugby School gave the sport its name and developed its first

set of rules. The Rugby Football Union was founded in 1871,

and the International Rugby Board - now known as World

Rugby - was established in 1886.

Today, different types of rugby are played around the world

- Rugby (fifteen-a-side), Rugby League, and Rugby Sevens -

with various competitions taking place.

Rugby(fifteen-a-side) was played at Paris 1900, London

1908, Antwerp 1920 and Paris 1924 with men’s teams only,

after which came a long absence until the sport returned in

its seven-a-side format at the Rio 2016 Games. A women’s

competition was also held for the first time in Rio.

Rugby returned to the Olympic programme at Rio 2016, when the Sevens format provided a captivating showcase for this pacy and thrilling team sport.

Sailing has a long history in the Olympic Games. The sport

made its debut in 1900; with the exception of 1904, it has

appeared at every Olympic Games since then. The sport’s

name was changed from ‘Yachting’ to ‘Sailing’ at the Sydney

2000 Games.

Each event consists of a series of races. Points in each race

are awarded according to position: the winner gets one point,

the second-placed finisher scores two, and so on. The final

race is called Medal Race, for which points are doubled.

Following the Medal Race, the individual or crew with the

fewest total points is declared the winner.

During races, boats navigate a course shaped like an

enormous trapezoid or a sausage depending on the type of the

boat, heading for the finishing line after they contend with

the wind from all directions. They must pass marker buoys a

certain number of times and in a predetermined order.

Sailing demands skill and nerve to master the ever-changing water and weather conditions at the 1964 Games legacy venue of Enoshima Yacht Harbour.

In Shooting, athletes use guns to shoot at stationary targets

in a range in the Rifle and Pistol events, and at moving

targets in the Shotgun events.

In Rifle and Pistol shooting, participants aim at a target with

concentric circles, with those closer to the centre earning

more points. There are four gun types and three distances:

50 metre rifle, 10m air rifle, 25m rapid fire pistol and 10m

air pistol. There are also three shooting positions: kneeling,

where the athlete goes down on one knee and rests the gun

on the knee; prone, where the athlete shoots while lying

down; and standing. Some events include all these positions.

In Shotgun events, a flying plate target called a clay is the

target. There are two varieties: trap, where the targets are

thrown a long distance from a single trap; and skeet, where

targets are thrown from traps on the left and right.

At Tokyo 2020, 10m Air Rifle, 10m Air Pistol and Clay Trap

will be included as men’s, women’s and mixed events.

While physical fitness is important, athletes require deep

reserves of mental strength. Victory may hinge on a single

shot.

A skateboard is a short, narrow board with two small wheels

attached to the bottom of either end. Skateboarders ride on this

apparatus to perform a series of tricks including jumps, flips and

mid-air spins. The sport of Skateboarding will make its Olympic

debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

There are various theories about the origins of Skateboarding,

but it is generally held that the sport began in the 1940s on

the west coast of the USA when metal wheels were attached

to a narrow wooden board. In the 1950s, plastic replaced

metal as the material of choice for the wheels, and the first

‘Roller Surfboard’ become commercially available, which in

turn developed into the skateboard that we know today. The

sport was a big hit with the younger generation and grew in

global popularity in the 1980s and ’90s. Since the late 1990s,

skateboarding has become an essential part of street culture.

Sport Climbing takes the challenge of scaling steep ascents

to a whole new level. Climbers use brightly-coloured hand,

finger and foot holds, their climbing skills and all the

strength their bodies can muster to work their way up a near-

vertical wall.

The sport will make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 and

will feature three disciplines: Speed, Bouldering and Lead.

Speed climbing pits two climbers against each other, both

climbing a fixed route on a 15-metre wall. In Bouldering,

climbers scale a number of fixed routes on a 4m wall in a

specified time. In Lead, athletes attempt to climb as high as

possible on a wall measuring over 15m in height within a

fixed time. At the Games, each climber will compete in all

three disciplines, with the final rankings being determined by

the combined results.

In some disciplines, climbers attach safety ropes; however,

no other equipment is permitted and competitors must climb

using only their bare hands and climbing shoes. The sport

requires strength, flexibility and skill together with careful

advance planning: the first ever medallists will all possess

this unique combination of physical and mental capability and

decisiveness.

Sport Climbing makes its Olympic debut, with athletes winning gold thanks to the power and strength in their fingertips.

Surfing is one of five additional sports proposed by the

Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to bring more youthful

and vibrant activities into the Olympic programme. In 2016,

its inclusion was approved by the International Olympic

Committee.

The competition will take place on the open ocean, where

the condition of the waves, the direction and strength of the

wind, and the height of the tides will all be factors. No two

waves are alike, making Surfing a competition against nature

as much as it is a contest between the competing athletes.

Shortboards will be used at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where 20

men and 20 women will compete in separate competitions.

The world's top surfers will celebrate their sport’s Olympic debut by competing on Japan’s spectacular Pacific coastline.

Table Tennis has come a long way from its late 19th century

origins an after-dinner game played by upper-class English

families. More than a century later, Table Tennis has a greater

number of recreational players than any other sport and

Olympic-level competition is a breathtaking spectacle.

A Table Tennis table is 2.74 metres long and 1.525m wide,

positioned 76cm above the floor and divided in half by a net.

The sport follows the same basic principles as Tennis but has

a very different scoring system. Singles matches are played

over the best of seven games, with the first player to 11

points (by a margin of two clear points) winning each game.

Team matches consist of four singles matches and one

doubles match, each played over the best of five games. Each

team consists of three players and matches end when a team

has won three individual games. In doubles matches, players

take turns to hit the ball.

The International Table Tennis Federation was established

in 1926, and as of 2017 226 countries and regions are

members, boasting the largest number of member states as

an international sports supervising organization.

Table Tennis made its Olympic debut at the Seoul 1988

Games with men’s and women’s singles and doubles. Since

Beijing 2008 the competition has consisted of men’s and

women’s singles and team events, while the Tokyo 2020

competition will also include a mixed doubles event. Each

event operates on a knockout format, with players and teams

progressing through the draw until the finals.

Table Tennis is the biggest participation sport in the world and sure to be a must-see attraction at Tokyo 2020.

Taekwondo is a martial art created by Choi Hong Hi in the

Republic of Korea in 1955. It is based on taekkyeon, a much

older traditional martial art from the Korean peninsula and

Japanese Shotokan karate, and became Korea’s national sport.

There are an estimated 80 million enthusiasts worldwide.

Taekwondo appeared as a demonstration sport at the Seoul

1988 and Barcelona 1992 Games, and was made an official

sport at Sydney 2000. It is one of the two Asian martial arts

included on the Olympic programme. Taekwondo originally

had forms known as Kyorugi and Poomsae, with Kyorugi

adopted for the Games.

Taekwondo is contested in a tournament format with four

classes for both men and women, divided by weight. Matches

are played out on an octagonal mat with a diameter of eight

metres, over three two-minute rounds, with a one-minute

interval between the rounds. The object of Taekwondo is to

land kicks and punches on the opponent’s scoring zones: a

match can be won by knockout or by an aggregate of positive

and negative points. Head and body protection is worn by the

athletes.

Every four years, the Olympic Tennis tournament attracts the world’s

top stars. Recent gold medallists have included such legends of the

sport as Rafael Nadal (men’s singles, Beijing 2008), Andy Murray

(men’s singles, London 2012 and Rio 2016), andVenus andSerena

Williams. Between them, the Williams sisters have won a total of

eight Olympic gold medals.

Tennis appeared at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 but

was dropped from the programme after the Paris 1924 Games.

It returned 64 years later, with Miloslav Mečíř (Czechoslovakia)

and Steffi Graf (West Germany) winning gold in the two singles

tournaments at Seoul 1988.

At Tokyo 2020, the tournament will follow a knockout format with

men’s and women’s singles and doubles competitions, and a mixed

doubles event which was first contested at London 2012. Matches

will be played on hard courts, which is the usual surface for the

Olympic tournament. London 2012 was unusual in being played on

the grass courts of Wimbledon.

To compete in singles events, athletes must be ranked among the

top 64 players in the world, and, as a rule, must have an enough

actual performance to represent their country in the past in recent

national-level competitions. In addition, each country may only

send six players (singles competition: 4 players) to the Games.

Many of the world’s leading players will be bidding for Olympic glory at Japan’s ‘home of tennis’.

Triathlon is an endurance sport that combines swimming, road cycling and distance running, performed in that order. Events are conducted over a variety of distances but the ‘Olympic distance’ for men and women is a 1500-metre swim, 40-kilometre bike ride and 10km run. The race is completed from start to finish, with no breaks. There are no heats; both the men’s and women’s events consist of a single race. The first athlete to cross the finish line is the winner. Medallists in the men's event will complete the distance in about one hour 45 minutes, while top women will finish in just under two hours.The sport developed in the United States during the 1970s and became part of the Olympic programme at the Sydney 2000 Games, when more than half a million spectators lined the city streets to cheer the athletes. An exciting development for Tokyo 2020 is the inclusion of

a new mixed relay with teams of two men and two women competing over a short-course triathlon (300m swim, 8km bike, 2km run) before tagging a teammate to set off. Taking around one hour 30 minutes to complete, athletes enjoy the rapid and unpredictable format while crowds will relish the fast-moving action and frequent overtaking.

Competitors in the gruelling sport of triathlon are not only great swimmers, but great cyclists and runners too.

Beach VolleyballBeach Volleyball, deriving from Volleyball, is played by teams

of two on a court covered in sand. The men’s and women’s

Beach Volleyball made its Olympic debut at Atlanta 1996.

For Beach Volleyball, matches are a best of three sets using

the rally point system. The first two sets are played to 21

points, with the final tie-breaker set being played to 15

points. The court is 16 meters by 8 meters, which is slightly

smaller compared to the indoor Volleyball. However, the

height of the net is the same at 2.43 meters for men and 2.24

meters for women. With just two people on each side of the

court to cover this large space, team work is the key factor

for this exciting sport.

With just two players per team, players communicate with

each other by giving hand signals behind their backs before

the play. Watching the coordinated tactics the players show

Volleyball is played by two teams of six on an 18m x 9m

indoor court divided by a net (2.43m high for men, 2.24m

for women). The object of the game is to land the ball in the

opposition’s half of the court.

Each team is allowed three touches of the ball before it must

cross over the net. The key attacking move is the set and

spike, in which a player feeds the ball (set) for a teammate

to power it into the opposition’s court (spike). The teams

continue to rally the ball back and forth until one or the

other allows the ball to bounce on the court or hits it out

of bounds. Players require amazing power and reactions:

in men’s matches, the ball can reach speeds in excess of

130km/h.

Volleyball for both men and women became an official

Olympic sport at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

The forerunner of Weightlifting was the lifting of heavy stones

in contests of strength, which was practised throughout the

ancient world. Weightlifting as an organised sport also has a

long history and was included in the programme at the very

first modern Olympic Games, Athens 1896.

The events at Athens 1896 and St. Louis 1904 used different

techniques to today, while all lifters competed in the same

events regardless of bodyweights. Athletes were grouped

by bodyweights first at Antwerp 1920, and two lifting

techniques the ‘Snatch’ and the ‘Clean and Jerk’ standardised

from Montreal 1976. Women’s events were first included at

the Sydney 2000 Games.

In the Snatch, the bar is lifted from the floor to above the

head in one movement. By contrast, the Clean and Jerk is

a two-stage action - the bar is first brought up to the chest

before being jerked over

the head.

each.

The aim of Weightlifting is simple: to lift more than anyone else. The result is pure sporting theatre and a real spectator favourite.

Wrestling was a feature of the ancient Olympic Games in 708

BC, with the sport’s Greco-Roman style included in the first

Games of the modern era at Athens 1896. Eight years later,

Freestyle Wrestling was introduced at the St Louis 1904

Games. Women’s Freestyle Wrestling joined the Olympic

programme at Athens in 2004.

The essence of both styles is the same: with no equipment

and no grasping at clothing, two athletes try to press both

shoulders of their opponent down onto the mat. Greco-

Roman wrestlers use only their upper bodies and arms while

Freestyle wrestlers can use any part of their body.

The competition programme at Rio 2016 included six classes,

based on weight, for each of men's Greco-Roman, men's

Freestyle and women's Freestyle. For all events, there is a

direct elimination system that eventually decides the two

finalists for the gold medal match. All wrestlers who lose

against either finalist, at any stage of the competition up to

and including the semi-finals, enter the repechage.

Wrestling is considered the world’s oldest sport - a pure battle of skill between two opponents with the single aim of pinning or throwing their rival to the mat.
