ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY Perth International Jazz Festival wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we meet on, the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar nation. We wish to acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region.

  • IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE AND, HONESTLY, SHEER DELIGHT THAT WE PRESENT THE 2020 PERTH INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL.

Planning this has been a wild ride and I am

really proud and excited about what we

have planned for you. There has been a lot

of changes that have had to happen but at

our core we want to give you a weekend

of the very best jazz that we can in our

    wonderful city.

We return to the Perth Cultural Centre

utilising The Rechabite as our festival hub.

This venue provides audiences with the

opportunity to experience as much of our

ticketed program as they can by easily

moving from their main hall to their Goodwill

    Club in the basement.

    Our free community performance program

is bigger this year through the generous

support of Lotterywest, City of Perth, City

of Vincent and ECU/WAAPA. We love our

    ongoing friendship with Lotterywest and

City of Perth and we very happy to welcome

back our new partners from last year: City of

    Vincent and ECU.

We will open the festival on Friday night

with a totally free event in the State

    Theatre Centre Courtyard in collaboration

with RTR. This will then lead into free day

time concerts in the Northbridge Piazza

on Saturday and Sunday and a special

afternoon picnic concert in Hyde Park on

    Sunday.

We will continue with our free In

Conversations at Alex Hotel, where you can

hear artists speak about their work and lives,

and the Ellington Jazz Club will, of course,

be presenting a weekend program including

    the infamous Jam Sessions.

There is so much music to enjoy this

weekend. Come and take a risk with us to

see as much music as you can, experience

new delights, reacquaint yourself with old

favourites and just have the best time! This

festival is for you and we look forward to

seeing you there, from a safe distance.

    DR. MACE FRANCISPIJF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Message from the Chair from the artistic director

I CAN’T IMAGINE A YEAR WHEN GETTING OUT TO HEAR GREAT MUSIC HAS BEEN EVER MORE IMPORTANT THAN 2020.

This year’s jazz festival is all about bringing

together our community. We will present

a program this year that has more family

friendly and free community events than

ever before. None of this would have been

    possible without our fantastic partners,

and I thank each and every one of our

supporters for helping to bring this year’s

    festival to life.

The program that our Festival Director,

Dr. Mace Francis has pulled together

demonstrates the amazing jazz talent that

Perth has right here at our doorstep. I know

you are going to love what we have planned.

Everything from jazz parades, family picnics,

    a late-night speakeasy and a luxe jazz

dinner and cocktail event ensure that there

really will be something for everyone. We

are also thrilled to be presenting music in

some fabulous new spaces including at

The Rechabite, Alex Hotel, the Northbridge

    Piazza and Hyde Park.

Trying to plan a jazz festival in such

    unprecedented times has been character

building, to say the least! The arts

industry and associated sectors are still

reeling from the ongoing effects felt by

the pandemic. Throughout this time, our

    board has been absolutely committed

to bringing you this year’s jazz festival.

It has been great working with such a

fabulous, engaged board. Like you, we

are all chomping at the bit to get out

there and enjoy some live music over

this festival weekend. Be safe! Be socially

distanced! Wash your hands and ENJOY

    this wonderful weekend of jazz.

Cuban American pianist Fabian Almazan and Perth bassist Linda May Han Oh first met in 2006 while pursuing master’s degrees in New York City. Since then, they’ve quickly risen to the top of the creative music scene as leaders and band members alongside the likes of Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, and Terence Blanchard. In this duo setting, they explore the sonic possibilities with Oh on the electric and acoustic bass (and vocals) and Almazan imaginatively sculpting the sound of an acoustic piano.

    Fabian Almazan:

Now based in the US, Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Gedera, Israel. He graduated from WAAPA in 2008 and immediately began accumulating awards and prestigious performance opportunities. He was the 2015 winner of the Freedman Fellowship Award and in 2014 won the Barry Harris Piano Competition in the US. He has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

“TAL COHEN IS AMONG THE BEST OF A VERY FEW YOUNG INSPIRED PIANISTS I’VE ENCOUNTERED IN MY TRAVELS. TAL’S PLAYING IS FULL OF PASSION, FOCUS AND CREATIVITY. HE WAS A JOY TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH.” – JOE LOVANO

What started out as an accident (booking two drummers for the same gig), turned into one of Melbourne’s most exciting ensembles and longest running residencies of the 2000’s. Two albums and a Bell Award for Best Jazz Release later, two of the original band members – Jamie Oehlers on saxophone and Ben Vanderwal on drums present the all new Perth version of this ensemble, with new material and an exciting new line-up. What’s better than one drummer? We all know the answer to that - If you’re wondering what this sounds like, think 70’s Miles Davis meets a New Orleans drum line.
