I often hear friends and family on Neighbor Islands complain about how Honolulu-centric our Honolulu-based television sta-tions are, even though they serve a statewide audience. “The only time I enjoy seeing the Honolulu bias is during the traffic reports,” says a friend in Kaunakakai. “We can laugh here about Honolulu rush-hour. I think how lucky I am never to deal with the H-1/H-2 merge or Middle Street back-up.”

At PBS Hawaii, the only licensed nonprofit educational broadcaster serving the entire state, we’re mindful of residents in every pocket of this wonderful, diverse state. Our transmission signals go farther than those of any other broadcaster to reach the under-served with “free TV.” You regularly see Neighbor Island residents appearing on our public-affairs show, Insights On PBS Hawaii, and many of our best documentaries have been shot on islands other than Oahu. Almost half of the 54 schools participating in HIKI N -O, our statewide stu-dent news network, are on Neighbor Islands. The HIKI N -O team, led by Robert Pennybacker and Sue Yim, spend a lot of time in conversation with these schools’ teachers, sharing feedback. And thanks to generous support from funders, PBS Hawaii personnel provide mentoring in journalism and video production on every island. As I write this, I’m just back from speaking with the Kona Mauka Rotary and visiting at the Honalo home of the 104-year-old matriarch of popular Teshima’s Restaurant. There are two flights of steps to Mrs. Teshima’s front door and she’s just fine, coming and going, watch-ing over her family and the restaurant. Sherry Bracken, Public Affairs Director for Mahalo Broadcasting radio stations, filled me in on what she’s been seeing in local politics and community affairs on the Big Island. This month on Long Story Short, our guests are a married couple living on Kauai, where they raised their children without television in the remote Haena area. Today Hau‘oli and Chipper Wichman run the National Tropical Botanical Garden, beautiful properties which are home to the world’s largest collection of endangered plant species. Ever been to Limahuli, Kauai? Gorgeous! While the Wichmans are devoted to caring for these gardens, they travel widely, recogniz-ing that this is a global society. They share Hawaii wisdom in conservation and stay aware of outside factors that could affect what they’re doing here. The couple, mar-ried for 28 years, is together 24/7 and they humbly pass along some relationship tips. This program airs on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:30 pm. There are fascinating people and stories throughout Hawaii. Although PBS Hawaii is based in Honolulu, our travels, our hearts and our commitment are statewide.

PBS Hawaii’s mission is to inspire, inform and entertain by providing high-quality programming and valuable services for our diverse island community.

Major support of the station comes from the people and businesses of Hawaii.

Memorable Experiences from The FringeStudents from Nanakuli Perform in Prestigious Festival

Nanakuli, Hawaii is 7,000 miles away from Edinburgh, Scotland, but a group of 10 performing arts students recently shortened that distance. Local independent producer Roy Kimura and PBS Hawaii videographer Glenn Yamamoto were there

to document the students’ amazing journey from Hawaii to Scotland.

Ten students from Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center performed last month at the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as part of the American High School Theatre Festival.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe began in 1947, when eight theater groups turned

up—uninvited—to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. Not being part of the official program didn’t stop the groups from performing, and over the years, more performers followed their lead, until the Festival Fringe Society was created in 1959 in response to this performance trend.

The Nanakuli Performing Arts Center’s “fifteen minutes of fame” was earned by hard work and a determination to succeed despite numerous challenges including limited finances and public perception. Center director Robin Kitsu notes that in a com-munity which prizes athletics, the performing arts sometimes suffer by comparison. Think “Glee.” The Fringe, he acknowl-edged, was a life-changing opportunity for the Nanakuli students, one that affirmed the value of what they are doing.

The group performed Under the Influence by playwright Ron Parker, a powerful play about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse. The characters portray the results of their co-dependency – anger, hate, loneliness, isolation, guilt, sorrow and shame. The young actors from Nanakuli go deep, drawing from mature emotions to present riveting and very believable performances.

Nanakuli student performers received a wide range of support from community residents, local businesses and organizations, and even a few international benefac-tors. Wayne Rapozo, a Kauai-born attorney who now lives in London, is one of its sponsors. The Sinclairs, a couple from Scotland who discovered the performing arts company while vacationing in Makaha, extended their hospitality back home in Edinburgh to the group.

PBS Hawaii Presents will premiere Nanakuli Fringe on Thursday, November 10.

PBS Hawaii: Why did you make this documentary ?

N -a‘ -alehu Anthony: We wanted to record Mau’s oral history and capture the perspective of a man who had almost single-handedly changed the trajectory of canoe sailing in Polynesia.

PBS Hawaii: As a H -ok -ule‘a crew member and captain, did you find the storytelling process easy or difficult?

N -a‘ -alehu Anthony: It made the story much harder to tell. I shot 120 days of footage on the canoe for this

apa Mau: The Wayfinder will make its world broadcast premiere on PBS Hawaii Presents Thursday, September 29 at 8:30 p.m.

The one-hour documentary tells the story of master navigator Mau Piailug (1932-2010) from Satawal, Micronesia. In Satawal, navigators are chosen at birth and begin training at an early age, wading in the shallow tide pools to gain a feel for the ocean. They learn the stars, currents and winds, developing an intuitive understanding of the cosmos and a deep trust, respect and understanding of the sea. Mau was recognized as a master navigator by the time he was 18 years old. In 1975, a small group of visionaries in Hawaii came together to build a voyaging canoe in the ancient style. The dream was to sail to Tahiti along the pathway recounted in oral traditions. The critical missing component was a navigator trained in the traditional ways. Mau agreed to navigate H -ok -ule‘a on her maiden voyage to Tahiti using only his knowledge of the heavens and the ocean. The union of navigator and canoe became a driving force, reawakening cultural pride and unity throughout Polynesia. More than thirty years since the maiden voyage of H -ok -ule‘a, Hawaii is now home to a handful of long-distance voyaging canoes being used to train and educate a new generation. To show their gratitude for what he taught them, Mau’s students honored him in 2007 with the ultimate gift for a wayfinder – a 56-foot double-hulled voyaging canoe.

The Alingano Maisu was designed, constructed and sailed to Satawal where Mau, aging and in frail health, waited to receive his students from Polynesia. The story came full circle as Mau, in turn, honored his students by performing the ancient Micronesian Pwo ceremony to recognize them as the next generation of master navigators. Papa Mau: The Wayfinder documents this 30-year adventure to revive the art of navigation for the Hawaiian people, made possible by the aloha that one man had for his own people and his Polynesian cousins. Filming took over five years and covered thousands of miles of travel throughout the Pacific as Producer/Director N -a‘ -alehu Anthony, a H -ok -ule‘a captain himself, captured the incredible story from those who experienced the journey. PBS Hawaii and Pacific Islanders in Communications have formed a partnership to present Pacific Islander-themed programs to PBS stations across the country. Papa Mau: The Wayfinder will be part of this new series called Pacific Heartbeat.

documentary, gathering a multitude of really good stories. Our team had the difficult challenge of leaving some very compelling footage on the cutting room floor.

PBS Hawaii: What was the greatest challenge you faced to complete this film?

N -a‘ -alehu Anthony: There were practi-cal challenges like keeping gear dry and man-aging media 500 miles from land, but funding

this film was by far the biggest challenge. Everyone who worked on the project believed in it and wanted to see it completed so they worked at discounted rates. Palik -u Documen-tary Films provided a lot of in-kind equipment and facility use.

PBS Hawaii: What is the one thing you would like viewers to come away with after watching Papa Mau: The Wayfinder?

N -a‘ -alehu Anthony: One person can make a difference. Only one person could have guided H -ok -ule‘a to Tahiti the way Mau did and that was the man himself. In doing so, he allowed the rest of us to realize dreams that were considered impossible. His ability to teach those in leadership roles to see over the horizon is a gift to each of us that will only grow as we sail to the next destination.

HIKI N -O is an example of media and education working together for a better society. Many leaders in

education and business in Hawaii and across the nation see a model like HIKI N -O as an opportunity for

students to develop the skills and competencies they’ll need for the 21st century.

The Nation’s First Statewide Student News Network

SEPTEMBER 2011 7

HIKI N -O students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, media literacy and civic leadership skills that the Hawaii State Department of Education has identified as General Learner Outcomes (GLOs). These GLOs are at the heart of the standards-based classroom and are essential skills for all students to lead productive and positive lives.

Maui High School media teacher Clint Gima wrote: “This type of educational experience not only maximizes current media technologies, but it also gave students the opportunity to practice 21st-century and basic life skills in a real-world project.”

FIRST-YEAR PROGRAM UNDERWRITING: Bank of Hawaii PBSHawaii.org/hikino

It’s not easy to catch up with Peter Ho. As Chair-man, President and CEO of the bank named “Best Bank in America” by Forbes Magazine for the 2nd year in a row and as Chair of the Hawaii Host Committee for the upcoming APEC 2011 confer-ence, Peter has a lot on his plate. That is why we were delighted when he stopped by PBS Hawaii to share with us why Bank of Hawaii is enthusiastic to be HIKI N -O’s first underwriter. Here are some of his comments:

Peter explained that because Bank of Hawaii serves communities from Hilo to Hanalei, the Bank looks to support projects that have state-wide impact. With participants from schools on all the main Hawaiian islands, from schools small and large, rural and urban, HIKI N -OŌaligns nicely with the Bank’s community goals.

Mahalo, Peter! Because of Bank of Hawaii’s gener-ous support of HIKI N -O, PBS Hawaii and schools across the state “can do!”

Chairman, President and CEO, Bank of Hawaii

“When Leslie first came to Bank of Hawaii to discuss the concept of HIKI N

-O, we thought that

it was a homerun idea. To see how successful it’s become in its inaugural season has been really special for us and for the community. Hawaii is a small community and anytime we can be suc-cessful in a “first” in anything, I think it’s a real source of pride for the community.”

“For Bank of Hawaii, helping the community and working with the community is terribly impor-tant for us. Because, in the end, our success is completely tied to the success of the community.”

follows four diverse female artists as they navigate the economic, psychological and spiritual challenges of creating art outside the elite art world. From Hawaii’s Big Island to the suburbs of Ohio, from New York City to the deserts of New Mexico, these women, representing a variety of ages, fight to honor both their vision and their families every day. In seeking this balance, the women find that their art often inspires their parenting and, con-versely, their families often inspire their art.

Masterpiece Mystery! Inspector Lewis, Series IVSUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 18, 25 | 8pm

Kevin Whately returns as Inspector Lewis for a fourth season of the popular detective series. Lewis and his young partner DS Hathaway (Laurence Fox) continue solving cases in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford.

Old, Unhappy, Far Off Things September 4A reunion at Oxford’s remaining all-female college ends with the murder of a prominent student, which may be connected to a similar, decade-old case. Lewis and Hathaway must delve into the mystery of the college and its secrets to find the culprit.

Wild Justice September 18Lewis and Hathaway are called in to investi-gate the poisoning of a bishop, whom they suspect was murdered for her progressive views. As their investigation continues, they uncover a twisted maze of motives and retribution.

The Mind Has Mountains September 25When a student is found dead during a clinical drug trial, the motives of an enigmatic professor are questioned. When a second death occurs, Lewis and Hathaway begin to suspect foul play, which the duo must uncover before another death occurs.

NOVA Engineering Ground ZeroWEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 | 9pm

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, NOVA presents an epic story of engineering, innovation and the perseverance of the human spirit. With extraordinary access granted by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, this program follows the five-year construc-tion of One World Trade Center (1 WTC) and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. NOVA captures the behind-the-scenes struggle of architects and engineers to make the buildings safe and highly secure under the pressures of a tight schedule, the demands of practical office space and efficient, “green” architecture and the public’s expectations of a fitting site for national remembrance.

P.O.V. The LearningTUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 | 10pmOne hundred years ago, American teachers established the English-speaking public school system of the Philippines. Now, in a striking turnabout, American schools are recruiting Filipino teachers. This film tells the story of four Filipino women who reluctantly leave their families and schools to teach in Baltimore. They hope to use their higher salaries to transform their fami-lies’ impoverished lives back home. But the women bring idealistic visions of the teacher’s craft and of life in America, which soon collide with Baltimore’s tough realities.

SURVIVING THE TSUNAMI: A NOVA SPECIALWEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 | 9pmThe earthquake that hit the northern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, was recorded at magnitude 9.0, the worst ever recorded in Japan. In some areas, the tsunami climbed over 100 feet in height and traveled miles inland. Amazingly, amateur and professional photographers captured it all on video, including remarkable tales of human survival, as ordinary citizens became heroes in a drama they never could have imagined. Never- -before-seen stories are captured in video and retold after-the-fact by the survivors who reveal what they were thinking as they made their life-saving decisions.
