A revolutionary technique dubbed cryo-electron

microscopy, which has shed light on the Zika virus and an Alzheimer’s enzyme, earned scientists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson the Nobel Chemistry Prize yesterday.

Thanks to the international team’s “cool method”, which uses electron beams to examine the tiniest structures of cells, “researchers can now freeze biomolecules mid-movement and visualise processes they have never previously seen,” the Nobel chemistry committee said.

This has been “decisive for both the basic understanding of life’s chemistry and for the development of pharmaceuticals,” it added.

The ultra-sensitive imaging method allows molecules to be flash-frozen and studied in their natural form, without the need for dyes.

It has laid bare never-before-seen details of the tiny protein machines that run all cells.

“When researchers began

to suspect that the Zika virus was causing the epidemic of brain-damaged newborns in Brazil, they turned to cryo-EM (electron microscopy) to visualise the virus,” the committee said.

Frank, a 77-year-old, German-born biochemistry professor at Columbia University in New York, was woken from his sleep when the committee announced the prize in Stockholm, six hours ahead.

“There are so many other discoveries every day, I was in a way speechless,” he said. “It’s wonderful news.”

In the first half of the 20th century, biomolecules -– proteins, DNA and RNA –- were terra incognita on the map of biochemistry.

Because the powerful electron beam destroys biological material, electron microscopes were long thought to be useful only to study dead matter.

Tea party to celebrate But 72-year-old Henderson, from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, used an electron

microscope in 1990 to generate a three-dimensional image of a protein at atomic resolution, a groundbreaking discovery which proved the technology’s potential.

Frank made it widely usable between 1975 and 1986, developing a method to transform the electron microscope’s fuzzy two-dimensional images into sharp, 3-D composites.

Dubochet, today an honorary professor of biophysics at the University of Lausanne, added water.

Now 75, he discovered in the 1980s how to cool water so quickly that it solidifies in liquid form around a biological sample, allowing the molecules to retain their natural shape even in a vacuum.

The electron microscope’s every nut and bolt have been optimised since these discoveries.

The required atomic resolution was reached in 2013, and researchers “can now routinely produce three-dimensional structures of biomolecules,” according to the Nobel committee. (AFP)

As the North Korean crisis rekindles the Cold

War-era threat of nuclear catastrophe, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize could honour efforts to limit the spread of atomic weapons, several experts suggest.

With tensions between Washington and Pyongyang sending the risk of a nuclear confrontation soaring, the

highlight of the Nobel awards season will be announced in Oslo on Friday at 11:00 am (0900 GMT).

Who will bag the prestigious prize is anyone’s guess, as the names of candidates -- a total of 318 this year -- are by convention kept a closely guarded secret for 50 years.

After President Juan Manuel Santos won the

prize last year for his efforts to bring peace to Colombia following a half-century-long conflict with rebel guerrillas, a peace prize honouring non-proliferation efforts would be appropriate this year, commentators say.

“The Nobel committee would make a big splash if it awarded the prize to the Iran nuclear deal,” said Asle Sveen, a peace prize historian.

Projects reflect maturity: jury chief

There appears to be a smear campaign against

G. P. ZACHARIADES (Overseas) Ltd. (“GPZ”) in some local newspapers in Bahrain. GPZ is renowned for its high quality work, reliability and integrity in dealing with its Clients, employees and Government Ministries over a period of 40 years, having built some of the most prestigious projects in the country. The defamatory allegations made in those articles are false and have seriously injured the business of GPZ, which fully reserves its rights under the laws of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the past 10 months GPZ has faced a cash flow crisis causing delays to the payment of wages and salaries. This is due to the cumulative impact of non-payment of its entitlements for projects mostly concerning its Private Clients.

GPZ was awarded over BD 7 million on two major arbitration disputes against a prominent Bahraini Developer and one of Bahrain’s major Banks associated with the said Developer. These arbitral awards were issued by the tribunals constituted under International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Arbitration Rules. Currently these awards are in the process of being enforced by the Court of Execution in Bahrain.

GPZ has released complete details of outstanding receivables including names of Clients, Project Titles and amounts due, to auditing and legal firms, Government Departments and major banks operating in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

At the request of GPZ, the Government released the amounts outstanding on a major project and GPZ used such funds to pay wages, salaries and repatriation costs in accordance with what had been agreed with the Ministry of Labor and Social Development

(“Ministry of Labor”). For the purpose of releasing the above payments, and acting in a spirit of co-operation and transparency, GPZ agreed to open an escrow account operated jointly by GPZ and the Ministry of Labor. GPZ is expecting further release of outstanding funds concerning a prestigious project successfully completed for the Government of Bahrain.

Concerning those defamatory articles, GPZ categorically denies all allegations against it, and wishes to place on record the following facts:

• GPZ has been closelycooperating with the Ministry of Labor as well as the relevant Embassies throughout this unprecedented 10-month cash flow crisis, which caused late payment of wages and salaries.

• Ministry of Labor hasacknowledged that GPZ has an excellent 40-year track record with the Ministry and that during the past 10 months GPZ demonstrated genuine intentions in resolving all pending labor issues, and co-operated fully with the Ministry.

• Thereisandthereneverwas any blacklisting of GPZ by the Ministry of Labor.

• All comments relatingto GPZ not being able to recruit new employees, renew staff visas or sign any new agreements with subcontractors as a result of such a blacklisting are simply false.

• All existing employeeshave received their salaries up to 31st of July 2017 and salaries for the month of August have been paid to 75% of GPZ’s workforce while the remaining 25% will receive their salaries in the next few days.

• Regarding GPZ’srelationship with the

Indian Embassy, it is confirmed that during a meeting held at the premises of Ministry of Labor on August 22nd 2017 at 10.00 am, in the presence of Ministry of Labor Senior Officials as well as Embassy Officials, pending labor issues were discussed and the Embassy R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s expressed their satisfaction on GPZ’s cooperation and efforts.

• GPZ paid more thanhalf a million Bahrain Dinars (BD 500,000) on salaries, wages and other expenses to workers and staff covering periods during which they did not attend their duties.

• GPZ liaised with othercompanies in the industry and achieved to secure employment in Bahrain for almost 500 employees.

Furthermore, an important meeting took place on 20th September 2017 at 10.00 a.m. at the Ministry of Labor attended by representatives of the Ministry of Labor, Embassies of India and Philippines, GPZ, and also representatives of former employees of GPZ, including various categories of workers.

During the above meeting, a mutual understanding was reached between all parties concerned, on all pending labor issues, including payments, repatriation, and concessions towards Bahraini employees, GPZ also submitted detailed statements concerning pending accounts of various categories of staff.

GPZ is now concluding a plan for the payment of all its creditors and is also engaged in selective tendering for the purpose of continuing its operations in the Kingdom of Bahrain, particularly in the sector concerning prestigious Building Projects, complex Industrial Projects and specialized Interior Decoration Works.

The renewable energy sector is growing faster than expected, driven largely by a “new era” in solar power and strong expansion in China, the International Energy Agency said.

IEA expects to see renewables growing by about 1,000 GW (gigawatt) by 2022, which equals about half of the current global capacity in coal power, which took 80 years to build.

1,000 GW by 2022Three countries -- China, India and the United States -- will account for two-thirds of global renewable expansion by 2022. Total solar PV capacity by then would exceed the combined total power capacities of India and Japan today.

By 2022, IEA said, renewables would account for 30 percent of power generation, up from 24 percent in 2016.  Although coal would remain the largest source of electricity generation in 2022, renewables would close the generation gap with coal by half.

China will continue to remain as the undisputed leader of renewable electricity capacity expansion over the forecast period with over 360  GW of capacity coming online, or 40 percent of the global total.

Qatar sinks, Egypt hurt by reserve ratio rise

Dubai

Qatar’s stock index sank to a five-year low yesterday

as foreign funds continued to sell ahead of third-quarter corporate earnings, while banks in Egypt were hit by news that the central bank would raise the required reserve ratio.

The Qatari index lost 1.6pc in thin trade, bringing its losses since four other Arab states broke off ties with Doha on June 5 to nearly 18pc. Banks were particularly hard hit, with Commercial Bank down 3.6pc.

Third-quarter results are expected to be announced later this month. Banks have been hurt as neighbouring states have pulled out their deposits because of the diplomatic crisis.

In Egypt, the largest listed lender, Commercial

Mediterranean and Gulf Cooperative Insurance (MedGulf) slumped 5.5pc in active trade after saying it had received a warning from the central bank, which told the company to improve its capital adequacy ratio by Dec. 31 or be suspended from issuing new insurance policies.

This year the regulator has cracked down on many

insurance companies. SABB Takaful had dropped 3.6pc on Tuesday after the regulator temporarily stopped it from issuing or renewing insurance or savings products, citing weaknesses in the firm’s internal controls. On Wednesday it ended flat.

The Dubai index added 0.8pc in its most actively traded

session since early August. Mid-to-large cap stocks were some of the top performers, with the Gulf’s only listed exchange, Dubai Financial Market, rising 2.7pc.

In Abu Dhabi the index edged down 0.2pc with the main drag coming from the banking stocks; First Abu Dhabi lost 0.5pc. (Reuters)

US private sector job creation fell in September to its lowest level in nearly a year, weighed down by back-to-back

hurricanes, the payrolls firm ADP reported Wednesday. Total private employment rose by 135,000 net new positions for the month, the lowest level since October of last year, ADP said in a statement. The result missed an analyst forecast of 160,000 new jobs.

India’s central bank held interest rates at a seven-year-low yesterday as it downgraded growth forecasts amid a slowdown

following recent high-profile reforms. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said the benchmark repo rate would remain unchanged at 6.0 percent. The decision is likely to disappoint the government which had sought a cut to help boost flagging growth.

US job creation shrinks in September India holds rates, cuts growth outlook I know some find the negotiations frustrating. But if we approach them in the right spirit... I am confident we will find a deal that works for Britain and for Europe too”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin did

not rule out yesterday a possible extension to a landmark OPEC agreement to cap oil output, speaking ahead of talks with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

Twenty-four oil producing countries, including Saudi Arabia, other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russia, agreed in late 2016 to reduce output by around 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd).

The deal, since extended to March 31, 2018, was aimed at reducing a global oil glut

that had seen crude prices plummet from over $100 a barrel in 2014 to a 13-year low of under $30 last year.

“What we’ve done at OPEC serves the entire global economy well,” Putin told an energy forum in Moscow, suggesting the deal could be extended again.

“We will look at the situation in late March. I think this is possible,” he said.

If OPEC member countries agree on a further extension of the deal, it would be “at least until the end of 2018,” Putin said.

The Russian president spoke ahead of meetings

with the leaders of key OPEC members, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia arrived in Russia later Wednesday for the first official visit to the country by a Saudi king.

On Wednesday, Putin is also scheduled to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The visits come a month before members of the OPEC oil cartel, of which Saudi Arabia is the biggest producer, are due to meet with the non-OPEC countries that have joined them in cutting crude output.

British Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech

at her Conservative Party’s annual conference was interrupted by a serial

prankster handing her an unemployment notice -- and

then by her own repeated

coughing. Comedian Lee Nelson, whose real name is Simon Brodkin, walked up to the stage and gave May the form, known in Britain by its reference code P45.

He claimed Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has clashed with May over Brexit, told him to do it.

“Boris said in one of those corridor meetings: ‘Give Theresa this’. It was a P45 of course, from Boris,” he told reporters as he was escorted from the conference centre in Manchester.

Moscow

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman arrived in Moscow

yesterday on a three-day trip expected to focus on energy and the Syrian conflict.

Salman could be seen descending an escalator from his plane in Moscow’s Vnukovo airport after landing around 1600GMT.

Salman will meet President Vladimir Putin on Thursday and they are expected to discuss extending oil production cuts ahead of the OPEC oil cartel meeting in November.

The king is also set to met Prime Minister Dmitry

Medvedev on Friday before leaving Russia on Saturday.

Russian energy minister Alexander Novak told TASS news agency on Wednesday

that Saudi Arabia is investing $1 billion into energy projects in Russia though he did not give details or specify if these deals would be signed during the visit.

Each year Alliance Française organizes an international photography

competition within the wide network of Alliance Française, spread across all 4 continents. This year the topic of the competition was “Objectif Sport” presenting varying perspectives on sport. Non-professional photographers offered their views on what “Sport” means and represented according to their own cultural and social background. Weekender covered the opening ceremony at Gallery 21 with Santhosh Rajendran present on the scene. Each of the photographs, chosen

by juries, were selected based on their ability to simultaneously illustrate the diversity of various sport disciplines and practices worldwide, as well as the commonalities that continue to exist as far as solidarity, passion and enthusiasm despite the cultural diversity. Mr. Khalid Fakhro, President Alliance Francaise, Bahrain, told Weekender that he was immensely proud to be the part of this initiative. “I think photography as a medium, does not fit in any language or any other kind of barriers. Alliance Francaise plays a key role in promoting French culture as

well as in connecting people and endorsing these very values, ultimately enabling cultural enrichment and dialogue.” From a female wresting in Kathmandu, to a bull race in Kerala, to the cricket in streets of Calcutta, the exhibit of photographs showcase an intriguing selection. Sport is no longer limited to physical performance; the participants poignantly captured how sport is not just a physical exertion, but also a form of expression and a means to define one’s self-identity. The exhibition will run till Oct14 from 12pm till 8pm daily. Free entry for all.

Wrinkled with stories untold; a smile that speaks of tales mystified from days gone afar- sit with an aged person and you’ll feel you have lived a lifetime, as they share their

anecdotes on what they have seen and learned since when they were on all fours. Rightly put by many, our ‘elders’ are gems we must hold onto. They are significant beings who serve as capsules of wisdom and deserve a stature of greatness in our society. This month serves as the International Month for the Elderly, celebrated every year to make certain the welfare of elder persons as well as to enroll their significant involvement in the society to get promoted from their knowledge and ability. Weekender decided to signify our Bahraini elders this month as well and shine the spotlight on initiatives that have helped in giving these important members of the society a strong stance and setting to interact and reminisce among one another. One such establishment is the old age homes functioning at Hidd, UCO Parents Care Centre.Started in 1995, the centre is open for the old and the retired daily to spend their free time and to make benefits of the centre’s services and educational programmes without any condition.“The centre aims to give proper care and housing to the old who don’t have they any support or those elderly whose families are unable to take care of them during the morning hours. During the hours of their stay at the centre, they spend time investing in reading books, playing board games, and socializing with other team mates. We also make sure that they execute their time in educational services and we give them a chance to practice small scale works, as we train them to become capable which gives them monetary benefits in return”, says Rasha Amhed, secretary at the centre.During the occasion of International day for the elderly, the centre arranges celebration inside the campus which consist of various folklore dance performances. These performances mark their emotion and expressions of their gladness while inspiring others to also participate. The centre also arranges visits to neighboring centres like NBB old Centre, and Muharraq social care centre during

the festive season. It also provides medical assistance and regular checkups for the old. Volunteers from specialties like physiotherapy and nurses visit to provide health services like counseling, advices, consultation and physiotherapy for those who are in need of them. They also provide insulin, injection s for the diabetic patients. Services like blood analysis, urine analysis for sugar patients, blood pressure monitoring, pulsate and supervision are other kinds of health services provided to the old.Abdul Hameed Ali, aged 76 has been visiting and spending time at UCO for the past two years. He is now enjoying his retired life after being worked as a supervisor in Saudi Arabia. “I am happy here. I come here every morning and meet my friends here. Many of us are of same age, and we enjoy our company. Whilst some spend time praying, and on board games, I prefer reading newspapers and magazines.” The centre, which consists of 75 women and 12 men, will be moved to a new building, where all the facilities will be advanced and work is in progress. “We at the centre provide various kinds of services. It acts like a day care for those who have no companion or have no supporters at their house. We are getting moral support from the government but what we need now is financial support from the public. Since we have a strict regime in diet, we also accept donations like milk , food, dates etc,” Reema Ahame, General Manager of the centre, told Weekender. The idea of establishing the centre started from the people of Hidd area, after it was learned that there are certain people around who are unable to afford caretakers. After an elaborate study to serve these people, UCO for Marine contracting took up this project two decades ago and presented the ideas to the officials. The torchlight bearers of the centre said that they are indebted to the supreme leadership and the officials of the government. The UCO Parents care centre is a humble initiative that is rewarded with the prayers of many. Here is hoping to see many more of these opening up soon.

For a music genre that was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from roots in blues and ragtime, it’s pretty amazing how it successfully progressed to all corners of the world. Bahrain isn’t deprived of

this music manifestation, and residents would be fortunate to indulge in first-hand jazz extravaganza at Bahrain’s first international jazz festival on Friday.‘Bahrain Jazz fest’, supported by EDB, is going to be premiered at the Royal Golf Club driving range and will be celebrating not just international artists but the local talent as well. Top notch performers like Ahmed AlQasim (Bahrain’s Foremost Jazz ensemble), Mohammed Rashid feat Banah (Top Gypsy Jazz ensemble), and Captain Tea (Bahrain’s foremost Electronic Jazz Dj) will be making the night, fun filled and mesmerizing. And if that wasn’t enough, musical bands like Skavengers, The Speakeasies Swing Band, Swing Zazou, Electric Swing Circus, and Dihann Moore & the SheGroovee band, will be filling the evening with laughter, enjoyment and loads of happiness.Organized by Royal Golf Club Director of Food & Beverage/Executive Chef, Paul Gindra, BMMI Senior Key Account

Manager, Michael Goodger along with Jude D’Souza, Managing Partner of Clockwork, the event is one that promises Jazz and entertainment for continuous hours on Oct6. “We are extremely excited and privileged to be able to host the 1st international jazz fest in Bahrain. Together with our organizing partners Clockwork and BMMI we have been working hard to create a unique jazz experience that the whole family can enjoy,” Paul shared with Weekender. “We are delighted to be a partner in Bahrain’s first international jazz festival which promises to be a fun day for the whole family, with unique on-site activities catering to all ages and some truly landmark musical talents on display. I don’t doubt that people in Bahrain and across the GCC will be marking their calendar for this year’s must-attend event!,” Michael noted. To make the festival even more exciting, there will be a kids area and food trucks also available throughout the festival. Tickets can be purchased online on Virgin Megastore and VisitBahrain.bh and in store at Royal Golf Club, Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, Room 2 Rock, Café Amsterdam, BMMI Retail Shop and Coda Jazz Lounge.

Movie review of ‘Ninjago’

The Lego phobia is one that isn’t just restricted to the youth. It’s a world of possibilities and wonders and with its en on the silver screen-movies have become even more fun! The Lego’s invasion of the theatrical settings was one that was welcomed with open arms and the recently released ‘Ninjago’ has brought some

slapstick humour, fascinating direction with believable characters. Again, pretty impressive that it all generated from a children’s plastic construction toys company.

Its predecessors, ‘The Lego Movie’ and the ‘Lego Batman Movie’ were hugely entertaining especially the first one which turned out to be an unexpectedly joyous adventure; a comedy that focused on letting kids’ creativity run wild and take the spotlight because that is what legos are all about- creating worlds beyond our measure and control. The first release also wasn’t what we were expecting and it offered a fresh air of change to the traditional-style cartoons. The second title was equally gripping for who wouldn’t have loved to see batman and the act of ‘pun’ come together. It was completely stable with its witty comedy and a coy satirical take on superhero movies-super fun. Ninjago intrigued from its very first look and it is a beautifully constructed film. It takes place in the vaguely Japanese city of Ninjago, located on Ninjago Island, where residents wake up each morning watching “Good Morning Ninjago.” They’re never at a loss for news stories as the doomed city is regularly attacked by the four-armed megalomaniac Garmadon (Justin Theroux) and his army of henchmen, who live in a conveniently located active volcano just off the island’s shores. That of course is followed everyday by them being repelled by the masked teenage ninjas who do battle in elaborate mechanical warcraft. What comes as a twist and revelation early on is how one of these ninjas, who is getting the short end of the stick, is the green ninja,

Lloyd (Dave Franco), whose elemental power is “green” and who happens to be Garmadon’s estranged son. Usually having a hard time navigating high school when he’s blamed for his father’s rampages, the film takes on how the lead protagonist finally discovers his true calling and how he is his own person- not defined and not deterred by what others may think of him. Some emotional lessons, lots of satire and yes one of the most furry-licious enemies to have ever been witnessed, in the form of a large cat- this movie is for the keeps. Get a little lego-ly infused this weekend!

Verdict: 7.5/10

BEAUTY/FASHION

Coats have been the age-old norm of looking good and feeling great! A fashion icon in itself, many famous brands and top-notch designers have

come up with alluring looks and textures that just take up the fashion scene by storm! However there is a certain kind of look that hasn’t really made it mainstream in the Gulf region yet but is without a doubt one that speaks volumes on vogue and making solid fashion statements.Embroidered coats, more popularly known as ‘Cashmere Coast’ originally originated from Jammu and Kashmir. Cashmere is finer, stronger, lighter, softer, and approximately three times more insulating than sheep wool and the unique

embroidered designs, make them extremely mesmerizing pieces to wear and flaunt. However it isn’t a common sight to see people don this around this area; probably because making such swift vogue changes can be daunting and there’s always the issue of what will people say? “I love cashmere and to be able to don a gorgeous coat as these is definitely something I’ll look into. It’s daring and gives a unique statement,” shared Muneera Al Shawqi, a business student at the AMA International University. The best part about this attire is that it is available in different colours, such as fur, cotton and the list continues. The embroidered coat not just makes one shine in the crowd, but also broadens their knowledge about fashion,” says, Shagufta Rashid, who is a working women with two children, and a proud Kashmiri. But, in what way is the coat an ideal wear for people? Weekender lists why you need one of these

irresistible garments in your cupboard now:

1. Applicable on

any dress: What makes a creation majestic is its ability to give a decent look irrespective of the occasion.

Embroidered coat, also known

as Kashmiri coat, is one such ethnic wear,

which makes your jeans look sexy, kurta look attractive, and t-shirt look peppy. So, won’t one feel like incorporating this fashion piece in their daily life?

2. An Ideal Winter Wear: Ah! Winter is a season, where everybody engulfs themselves in the warmth of fur and wool. Who would not want to look the best, even when winter has the reputation of being ‘dry’? Kashmiri coat, which is heavy and thick due to the presence of heavy work, definitely protects one from the chill, and gives warmth, which they are bound to enjoy and cherish.

3. Survives the Touch of Water: How often have our precious belongings lost their luster due to few drops of water touching the surface of the wear? The embroidered coat stands as a shining glory where it is bound to retain its shine and luster, even when washed multiple number of times. How good can this sound?

Embroidered coat is not just a wear for occasions, it can be worn anytime, anywhere, where the presence of this coat, is definitely bound to make every moment enjoyable. So, when are you off to get this ethnic wear?

Now here’s a story we want to talk about! When diagnosed patients survive breast cancer, the first thing they would like

to do is take a leap of faith, dip their toe into an ocean

of adventures and be

challenged mentally and physically, inspiring people around them.

For its 2017 edition, Ford Warriors in Pink has asked Models of Courage to take this challenge to reflect on their past experiences, connect with their spiritual self and the warrior within, and share their inspirational stories throughout the journey. Breast cancer survivors representing the

UAE, Morocco and Lebanon embarked on an

adventure-packed two-day journey in Ehden, in the northern mountains

of Lebanon, tackling obstacles and overcoming challenges, proving that even though breast cancer can continue to affect you following physical recovery, it doesn’t have to define you, or hinder living life to the fullest.

The “warriors” in the Middle East and North Africa region are called Models of Courage. They are patients, survivors, thrivers and co-survivors ready to help empower and inspire those currently in the fight. Not only do Models of Courage help raise awareness for the cause, they also help bring good days to those in the breast

cancer community. Since bad days are all too common for patients, survivors and caregivers alike, it’s more important than ever to create better ones.Joining Ford’s breast cancer awareness campaign this year are a number of online and radio celebrities, medical professionals and a wellness expert. Famed Middle Eastern fashion influencer Lana El Sahely, who has offered her designed unique fashion pieces to the warriors, was present. Also making their presence felt alongside the three Models of Courage, were radio host Sarah Gharzeddine of NRJ Lebanon, and influential Moroccan fashion and travel blogger Zineb Rachid of The Cherry Blossom. The addition of such high-profile personalities to the Warriors in Pink Challenge highlights the importance of raising awareness of breast cancer in the Middle East and North Africa.

Dear ‘Tired Dad’,

Maintaining balance between work and family life is the greatest challenge of our times. Sometimes it’s even hard to tell whether we spend more time at home or in the office with all the extra hours. It’s also not an exception to realise we know more about our co-workers’ troubles than our spouses’ ones. We are around them most of the time, we eat together, have breaks and talk together, and therefore no wonder such relationships often become more personal. What about home? When we finally reach it, we’re already totally drained from energy; all we can think is some peace and rest. But if we are parents of small kids, it doesn’t seem like an option. They require our attention and love. So, as tired you might feel at the end of the day, when you open the door, notice anticipation and happiness on their faces, get yourself together and make an effort to give them some quality of time. It’s definitely the quality, not the quantity that matters. Also, looking at the situation from the right perspective might be helpful. When the kids are young, they still want us to be part of their playful life. They ask for our opinions, experience and knowledge. This is when we can create a strong bond with them and participate is shaping them as people. It’s very easy to miss this spot of time and wake up one day seeing your teenager choosing to spend time with their friends and respecting their opinions over yours.Try to make an effort to find these 15 minutes a day to kick a ball with your sons. Maybe during a weekend you can make it longer? On a day when you're totally not into physical activity, try to compromise: watch some TV with them. That could be a football match or something they like and you could talk about later on. The idea is to follow their needs and interests. Also, you can try to pass some of your hobbies to them: gardening, fishing, boating? This way you could relax while spending time with your sons. And surely that would be unforgettable time!Don’t miss small daily opportunities: when you are driving them to school, you can always sing some songs together, plan the following weekend or bring up some nice memories from your last holiday. Keep reminding them how much you love them and miss them while you’re at work.Last but not least, do not forget about your wife: she also doesn’t spend much time with you and you mustn’t forget you are not only mum and dad but also a husband and wife. Ask some friends or grandparents to look after the boys and go on a romantic date. That should be a treat just for the two of you.I know all this may seem difficult and require lots of juggling, but as someone wise said once: ‘It’s not about having time, it’s about making time’. Make time for your dearest ones!

Dear Maam,

Can you please advise me on how can I combat feeling lethargic so I can spend more quality time with my kids. I have a very tiring job that really drains me out every day but i want to spend time with them but just never have the energy to do so. My both sons who are below to play football but reaching home around 8- all i want to do is lie down and watch TV. I know it’s unfair to them but I can’t help it. My wife also gets bicker over this situation. Please help.

Tired Dad

Work drains me and family time is dead - what do I do?

We take our body for granted. This is true if we notice how internally disconnected we are. When we visualize ‘body’ we instantly imagine our outer shell of muscle and skin. We must bring our attention to the internal processes as well, especially digestion. The food that you eat will

eventually end up as bone, tissue, blood and skin. You are what you eat.

This is why we must above all respect our ‘digestive servant.’

We can support our internal processes with small changes in the way we approach them. Imagine your digestive system as a hard-working, dedicated and intelligent team of servants. Every time you eat, these servants go in to action. They receive the food in the mouth and prepare it for the next stage. They then transfer the material in to the stomach where the bigger part of the process begins. Your servant team at this stage needs your total support. Here are a few tips to help them out-

1. Take small bites. Don’t tire the team out with a heavy load before the job has even begun.

2. Chew well. Mastication is the first step in digestion. The team below in your stomach does not have teeth or any other hard tools.

3. Eat slowly. Take your time and try to visualize what is going in inside your mouth and stomach. Give the digestive crew enough time to receive and do their job.

4. Eat clean. Your servants are doing their best to receive what you throw at them and are very aware of how critical the nutrition is to you. They are by far more efficient than we think. Supply them with fresh, raw, unprocessed, chemical free and appropriate foods. They will thank you by fixing you.

5. Don’t turn the sprinklers on. Drinking water while you eat and while digestion is taking place shut the factory down. Can you send emails when you’re in the shower? Now imagine typing the same email with the shower running really cold water, the bathroom filled with toxic carbon dioxide gas and your eyes closed. That’s what fizzy drinks do when you ‘wash’ your food down with them.

6. Don’t eat under stress. The team needs all the resources and tools they can get to digest the food and send it off to the right organs and functions. When we are stressed our body dedicates resources to short-term survival processes like the flight or fight response rather than aiding digestion. The crew is left without tools and without power to complete the immense task of digestion.

7. Don’t move around. Earthquakes are not fun. Even the slightest movement disturbs the process. Stay seated for at least 20 minutes after your meal. Shaking a container full of bubbling hydrochloric acid mixed with other explosive chemicals is not a good idea. Your stomach and gut are like that container when digestion is going on. Give them some peace and quiet to do their job.

8. Don’t stuff yourself. Feed yourself slowly and mindfully. Don’t wait to feel stuffed; everyone needs space to work in.

9. Give them a vacation. Every couple of weeks do a detox like a fruit only day or intermittent fasting. Every one needs a holiday to recuperate.

10. Be grateful. At the end of every meal thank your team for standing by you and doing such a great job. They will be ever motivated to keep you healthy.

When you've got a happy tummy!

Nibble picks If there’s one thing that completes an exciting weekend, it’s a platter full of munchies. Every week, we will be hitting the town to pick out a few nibble choices that’ll give you a happy stomach for 2 days.

OF THE WEEK

NESTLE CHOCOLATE FITNESS

Everybody loves chocolate, but the calories and pounds, one gains, it becomes difficult for one to have control over their desires. With a list of products that have come out, which guarantee taste and fitness, which one do you think will help one be in shape, irrespective how much ever they consume? Nestle chocolate fitness, which is cornflakes made of chocolate, is rich in calcium, iron, and seven important vitamins and minerals, which will definitely result in people not just loving it, but making it a part of their fitness routine. Go for it!

FERRERO ROCHER

Chocolate is anyway the favourite of the masses, without doubt. The best thing about chocolate attributes not just to its sweetness, but the variety and the presence of various other special things, which has over the years strengthened the customer loyalty and base. So is Ferrero Rocher. In the form of chocolate balls, it is extremely famous for the presence of hazelnuts in it, where the crunchiness and the oozing of extra chocolate, will make one opt for it again and again. So, what are you waiting for?

HERSHEY’S MILK CHOCOLATE

When a bite of milk chocolate enters our mouth, one very well realizes, what kind of feeling one is going to be engulfed in. Hershey’s milk chocolate, which is rich in cocoa, milk, vanilla and almonds, has over the years, come up with various other chocolaty products, which has in turn resulted in people making Hershey’s a permanent companion, where they can nibble, every moment and second. Cool, isn’t it?

COOKING

The origins of smoking food to preserve it probably dates back to the days of the caveman, when meat would be hung to dry. Smoke would affect the meat

closest to the fires, altering the taste and improving the longevity of the meat.Just when

this process was used on fish is unclear. It is known the Native Americans have used the process for many centuries, as have the Scandinavians, particularly in Norway.

There is even thought it may date back as far as the Egyptians and Romans. Whatever

the origin, the combination of a tasty bread, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon produces one of

the finest starts to the day.

The journey we are undertaking finds its roots far earlier than my childhood, when I helped my mother to bake. In fact we need to

go back to 1873 when something occurred that would influence me as a child and throughout my adulthood. It took almost a hundred years for there to be any effect on my life, but that happened when as a child I was allowed to borrow some books from the adult section of a library. The first was ‘Around the World in Eighty Days.’The author, Jules Verne, was a great visionary in

his writing, with prophecies of going to the moon, and travelling vast distances under the sea. But it was the journey of Phileas Fogg that first captured my imagination, inspired me to write, and gave me a yearning to travel which is still with me this day.

I am not a professional cook or chef; I am an aircraft engineer by trade, as well as an author of crime fiction. From an early age I had an interest in the preparation and consumption of food (particularly the consumption!), often helping my mother

bake. As I grew older, I tried making my own variations of recipes, sometimes with disastrous results, but on occasion something edible emerged.

So it seemed the most obvious thing to do would be to combine my love of food with my desire to travel, and embark upon a journey of discovery of the foods and people of the world.

Welcome to my ‘Around the World in Eighty Dishes.’

Glen R Stansfield. Author, biker and nutcase.

Actress Zendaya says she has only realised the “power” of her own voice over the last one year.

“I can genuinely say that I’m not the same person I was a year ago,” Zendaya told Glamour magazine, reports eonline.com.

“As my social platforms grew, I realised that my voice was so much more important than I had originally thought.

“I think if every young person understood the power of their voice, things would be a lot different. And it’s becoming more popular to be outspoken,” she added. (IANS)

Rapper Kanye West’s childhood home here has been abandoned -- a year after his charity bought the

property to convert it into a children’s community centre in memory of his late mother.

The house in the South Side of Chicago is now littered with garbage and drug paraphernalia, reports mirror.co.uk.

West spent his childhood at the property along with his mother Donda West, who died in 2007. But, the house now looks like a dumping ground.

Last year, Kanye’s protege Rhymefest bought the house and planned to convert it into a “community arts incubator”. (IANS)

Crowe’s product is expected to go on sale soon and his fans have already given the tea b a g s their seal of approval.

Your heartstrings may not feel particularly strong, and this situation isn’t likely to get any better today when you find that people are insensitive to your situation. This isn’t a good time to rely on others to pick you up. Put on your protective armour before you go out the door. The forecast calls for hostile attitudes.

The fog has finally lifted and you’re able to see clearly again. Make sure you’re awake and alert, because the gun is about to go off and the starting gates are about to open. You have the ability to take the lead, especially when it comes to matters involving love and romance. Your creativity is strong, and you’ll lead the pack almost effortlessly.Light a candle and make a wish. See the flame as a symbol of the transformation and passion within you. Your heart may feel restless. The flame flutters as a result of the passing wind. As the flame dances, you may remember the dances that you perform in an attempt to draw attention away from issues you must face.

This is a climactic time for you, and you may feel like your world is caving in. You may desperately try to hold the keystone in place so that the whole structure doesn’t fall. Somehow you feel solely responsible for holding together everything in your world. Remember that partnership means that there is someone else who needs to uphold his or her end of the bargain.

Your mood should turn toward getting things underway. This may mean that you need to get certain things out of your way, including people. Don’t be afraid to take action as necessary in order to get your point across. Deeds will speak louder than words. If you feel like time is passing you by, rip up the calendar and enjoy every moment as it comes.

You’re on an emotional high. You feel like a soaring eagle. Your behaviour may seem rather primal and animalistic, but this is fine. See where this instinct takes you. Raw passion is the fuel that lights your fire. Don’t deny this internal flame. Move forward with your dreams, especially in love and romance.

You may be asking, “Why me?” in almost every realm of your life today. For some reason it seems that everyone but you has exactly what they want. Perhaps you’re just being too picky. Your standards are high, and this is fine. It’s easy to reach small goals. You’ve picked the largest mountain to climb. Be patient.

Draw your strength from your sense of self. There isn’t another person like you, so capitalize on this and move forward in the way that only you can. There’s a great deal of bravery in your heart asking you to take risks that you may not have considered before. There are opportunities just waiting for you and no one else.

Get things started. You have many fantastic ideas. Really, the hardest thing for you now is to choose which one to pursue first. Activities that engage your creativity and sensitivity are most appealing now. Give some strength to your heart, which is normally seen as being tender and overly sensitive. Know that you’re brave and go for the gold.

At first you may be taken aback by someone’s aggressive approach to people and situations, but then you may see that really, this person has something important you can learn from. Study this way of going about things and realize that you need to adopt more of this assertive manner in order to be successful. This is especially true in matters of love and romance.

Gifts of pleasure could be bestowed upon you with little or no effort on your part. Regardless, it may be hard for you to sit still, since just about everything seems to be going your way, especially in matters of the heart. Although your approach to love is aggressive, it also involves tenderness and sensitivity.

You might be put off by other people’s comments. You’ll find their behaviour rude. You may break from your normal good manners and start to lash out at people around you. It could be the result of pent-up energy with no positive outlet. Be careful about exhibiting the behaviour that you abhor in others.

Kate Winslet and Idris Elba are strangers who survive

a plane crash – but will they be able to survive the snowy wilderness? It’s a heady combination of disaster movie and romance, anchored by strong performances from its stars. Based on the novel by Charles Martin, it sees the pair meeting at Salt Lake City airport when their flight is cancelled. She’s a photojournalist desperate to get home for her

wedding the next day, he’s a surgeon who needs to perform surgery on a ten-year-old boy. Why not hire a small plane with a dodgy-looking pilot and a storm coming?

It’s a Mills & Boon kind of set up, but Winslet in particular adds authenticity and gravitas and the script takes its time to build up to the inevitable. Fans of survival movies will be well served by the pair’s attempts to make a nest out of the broken

plane and their dilemmas (stay and wait for rescue or hike into a frozen wasteland?). It’s slightly frustrating that Winslet’s character Alex is nearly always the one who needs looking after, but the chemistry between them is good, the suspense sufficient and the ending gives you a gentle tug on the heartstrings. Oh, and there’s also a cute dog, who seems much better at this survival lark than anyone else. (timeout)

A giant python attacked an Indonesian man, nearly

severing his arm, before hungry villagers chopped up the reptile and ate it, a police chief said yesterday.

Security guard Robert Nababan crossed paths with the giant creature while patrolling an oil palm plantation in the remote Batang Gansal subdistrict of Sumatra island on Saturday.

“The python was 7.8 metres long (25.6 feet), it

was unbelievably huge,” local police chief Sutarja, who like many Indonesians only has one name, said.

Sutarja said the 37-year-old Nababan, who sometimes liked to eat snake, tried to catch the giant python and stuff it in a gunny sack.

But the huge serpent fought back and bit him on his left arm, nearly severing it from his body.

Nababan was then rushed to a hospital in a neighbouring town for treatment.

Other suspects could have poisoned the half-

brother of North Korea’s leader besides the two women on trial for his audacious assassination in Malaysia, an expert witness said yesterday.

Pathologist Mohamad Shah Mahmood said it was possible four other suspects who are mentioned in the charge sheet but are still at large could have administered a nerve agent before Kim Jong-Nam was attacked by the women.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah

and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong are on trial accused of smearing poison VX on Kim’s face at Kuala Lumpur international airport on February 13, in a Cold War-style hit that stunned the world.

The women, who were arrested a few days after the killing and face death by hanging if convicted, have pleaded not guilty to murdering the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un as he waited to board a flight to Macau.

“We, Europeans, say to the British: ‘We want our money back’. It’s as if you went to a restaurant, ordered a meal, began eating and then walked out in the middle of the meal, saying: ‘I’m not going to pay after all’. That’s not possible,”

Prisoners to serve judges cappuccinos in Italy

Jailbirds in northern Italy will soon be able to offer judges a sweetener -- though serving up an extra smooth cappuc-cino is unlikely to be enough to get time off sentences.

Feral and pet cats kill more than one million birds

in Australia every day, new research showed yesterday, with the staggering slaughter driving the decline of many species.

The study, published in the journal Biological Conversation, estimated that wild cats wiped out 316 million every year, while pets killed 61 million annually.

“Everyone knows that cats kill birds, but this

study shows that, at a national level, the amount of predation is staggering,” said lead researcher John Woinarski from Charles Darwin University.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte vowed

yesterday to have the Supreme Court chief justice and a special prosecutor impeached, as he defended himself against corruption allegations he said were aimed at ousting him.

Duterte accused Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno of corruption and alleged the ombudsman, Conchita Morales, was conspiring with opposition figures to bring down his government.

Morales’s office has been investigating allegations that Duterte had secret bank accounts that recorded millions of dollars he embezzled while a long-time

mayor of the southern city of Davao.

“In the end, to their sorrow, they will discover that there is no such thing as that amount,” Duterte said of the alleged embezzled millions, telling reporters his net worth was just 40 million pesos (around $784,000).

Duterte insisted the allegations were based on fabricated bank account records stolen from the central bank’s Anti-Money Laundering Council.

The council confirmed last week that it was evaluating the ombudsman’s request to investigate Duterte’s bank accounts, and on Tuesday Morales vowed to pursue the case.

Duterte accused Morales

of being aligned with former president Benigno Aquino and other opposition figures.

“They all want to force me out of Malacanang (the presidential palace),” he said.

Duterte said Wednesday he would also file an impeachment case against Sereno for allegedly failing to disclose earnings when she was a lawyer, as required by law of all public officials.

Under the constitution, the Senate holds an impeachment trial and votes to determine if Morales and Sereno should be removed from office.

A majority of senators support Duterte but they have also shown they will not endorse everything he does, and they may not back his impeachment moves. (AFP)

Heat on HamiltonTokyo

Lewis Hamilton is looking to hit back from his defeat in Malaysia at

this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, scene of a bizarre ‘Snapchat’ row that overshadowed last year’s race.

Britain’s triple world champion was forced to play second fiddle to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in Sepang on Sunday after securing his ninth pole of the season and 70th of his career.

Despite stretching his Formula One world championship lead over Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel to 34 points with five races left, Hamilton took a swipe at his Mercedes team.

“There are some real big problems that I can’t really explain to you,” he said. “There is stuff that has been happening through the weekend that is not

acceptable for this great team.”Hamilton came into last year’s

Suzuka race in a foul mood and seeking solace after raising the possibility of a Mercedes conspiracy against him following an engine fire in Malaysia.

But the Briton triggered further controversy when he was criticised for posting photos on social media during a press conference.

Furious with tabloids for labelling him “snap prat” and the “berc in the Merc”, Hamilton sulkily refused to answer questions after qualifying in Suzuka as the row rumbled on.

Hamilton, a three-time winner in Japan, will be hoping for a better

performance from his car this week than in Malaysia.

“Every point counts,” said

Mercedes team p r i n c i p a l

T o t o

Wolff.“We got lucky again (in

Malaysia) and we expect a very close fight between ourselves, Ferrari and Red Bull at Suzuka.”

Hamilton, who has 281 points to Vettel’s 247, had warned Ferrari would push Mercedes hard in Malaysia.

But they dodged a bullet as Vettel finished fourth after starting from the back of the grid, while Kimi Raikkonen suffered a calamitous engine failure that knocked him out of the race.

Hamilton snatched the title lead from Vettel at Monza last month but Mercedes, who have dominated the sport in recent years, face a growing threat from Ferrari and Red Bull.

Max factorVerstappen capped a

fairytale 20th birthday weekend in Malaysia with his second Formula One victory, as Australian team-mate Daniel Ricciardo took third.

But with Valtteri Bottas finishing fifth, Mercedes will need to find some extra speed at

Suzuka, w h e r e N i c o Rosberg’s 2016 victory completed a hat-trick of wins for the Silver Arrows in Japan.

Verstappen’s sizzling performance in Malaysia suggests he may have turned the corner after retiring from seven of the first 15 races this season.

More alarmingly perhaps for Hamilton will be the pace shown by Vettel, who set the fastest lap and a new lap record as he dashingly carved through the field.

However, Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne has ordered the team to fix the reliability problems that sabotaged their race in Malaysia.

Brave to feature athletes from 22 nations

P23

Beijing

Maria Sharapova  opened up on the despair she feels in defeat after she was ruthlessly

knocked out of the China Open in the third round by Romania’s Simona Halep yesterday.

The world number two was an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 winner to leave five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova still searching for her first title since

r e t u r n i n g from a doping

ban in April. It was the 26-year-

old Halep’s first victory over the Russian in

eight meetings.Sharapova, a former number

one now at 104 in the world rankings following her 15-month

suspension for taking meldonium, gave an insight into the rollercoaster of emotions in top-

level tennis.“Hard work is not good enough any more,

maybe it was -- I don’t know how many years ago -- but that’s just not a factor any more,” said the

30-year-old, asked about comments in a book she recently released.

“The reason I say that is there’s some incredible moments, very high moments, and there are very low moments.

“There have been times where I get off the court and you think, I don’t wish this on my future child.

“The feeling is so tough and disappointing.”

Halep, the second seed on Beijing’s outdoor hard courts, is the first woman into the quarter-finals, where she will play either defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska or Daria Kasatkina of Russia.

With world number one Garbine Muguruza exiting in the first round with a virus, Halep is now favourite.

Sharapova said it was the best Halep had played against her -- and Halep agreed.

The two met in the first round at the US Open a few weeks ago and Halep said she was delighted

to finally taste victory against Sharapova: “I’m

really happy that I could do this. “It’s my first victory against her and I just want

to enjoy the moment.”

Redemption for Kyrgios?Nick Kyrgios said he wanted to make up for his notorious meltdown in Shanghai last year as he beat Mischa Zverev in the second round in Beijing.

A year ago the supremely talented but combustible Kyrgios was suspended for his petulant behaviour at the Shanghai Masters, where he argued with the crowd and appeared to give away points in caving in to the German journeyman.

The enigmatic Australian, seeded eighth in the Chinese capital, smashed his racquet on the floor in anger, bending the head in half, when he conceded the opening set on Wednesday.

That earned the world number 19 a warning from the umpire and raised the spectre of one year ago.

But the 2 2 - y e a r - o l d returned for the second set with renewed d e t e r m i n a t i o n and coasted into the quarter-finals 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
