Renney Reaches 100With a 3-2 shootout win over the Maple Leafs on November 10 at Toronto, Tom Renney won his 100th game as the Rangers Head Coach becoming just the eighth coach in franchise history to reach the mark. He currently stands at 104-80-24 (.558 winning percentage) in 208 games behind the Blueshirts' bench. In his first two full seasons in the position, Renney has helped guide the Rangers to back-to-back, 40-win seasons for the first time since 1974 and was a finalist for the 2006 Jack Adams Award, given annually to the league's most outstanding coach, after leading the Blueshirts to the post-season for the first time since 1997.

There's No Place Like HomeThe Rangers have enjoyed great success at Madison Square Garden since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Over the last 17 regular season games, dating back to March 17 vs. Boston (W, 7-0), the Blueshirts have posted a record of 13-4-0 and have outscored opponents 52-23, while holding the opposition to a 1.35 goals against average over the span. New York has won 16 of the last 21 games at MSG, beginning with a 3-2 shootout win over St. Louis on March 3, allowing just 30 goals against (1.43 goals against average) while notching 61 goals during the stretch. Including five games from the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Rangers are 20-6-0 in the last 26 home games, outscoring opponents 80-39 (1.50 goals against average) over the span.

NYR Recent Highlights

October-On October 4, the Rangers kicked off their 81st season at home, defeating the Florida Panthers, 5-2, marking the second consecutive year the Blueshirts have won a season opener at MSG. Chris Drury, in his first game as a Ranger, notched the game-winning goal and added two assists to earn First Star honors. Jaromir Jagr tallied two assists, and is now tied for first all-time (Ray Bourque) for most career points in season openers with 30 points (nine goals and 21 assists).

-The Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals, 3-1, in the front end of back-to-back home games on October 12 at MSG. Scott Gomez tallied his first goal/point as a Ranger on his way to earning Second Star honors. Jaromir Jagr (First Star) recorded three assists on the night and, with his second assist, passed Paul Coffey for 11th on the NHL's all-time scoring list.

-Jaromir Jagr tallied his 100th goal as a Ranger on October 13 vs. Ottawa. The Blueshirt captain was also playing in his 200th game for New York.

-Through the first nine games, the Rangers surrendered 16 goals in regulation/overtime for an NHL best 1.76 goals against average during the span. It also marked the first time since the 1939-40 season the Blueshirts have allowed fewer than 17 goals in regulation/overtime through their first nine games, when they allowed 13 goals, and ranks second in franchise history.

-Brendan Shanahan tallied two goals and added an assist on October 29 vs. Tampa Bay. With his third point of the game, he became the 29th player in NHL history to record 1,300 career points (630 goals and 670 assists).

November-Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 31 shots on November 1 vs. Washington en route to his third shutout of the season and 10th of his career. He needed only 131 starts to reach 10 shutouts, becoming the third fastest to the mark in franchise history (1. G. Villemure - 102 starts; 2. E. Giacomin - 110 starts).

-The Rangers closed out a six-game homestand, their longest of the season, with a 2-0 win vs. the Flyers on Nov. 5 to post a 5-1-0 record over the stretch. New York yielded only six goals, holding each of their opponents scoreless in 20 times shorthanded. Henrik Lundqvist started each of the six games, posting a 0.83 goals against average, a .968 save percentage and three shutouts and Brendan Shanahan registered six points (three goals and three assists) in the six games.

-New York defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday at Mellon Arena behind four goals scored by their defensemen. It marks the first time in 14 years that Rangers blueliners notched four or more goals in a game, when Brian Leetch (two goals), Kevin Lowe and Sergei Zubov accomplished the feat on December 17, 1993 at Detroit (L, 6-4). With the win, the Blueshirts finished their four-game road trip with a record of 4-0-0, and now sit alone atop the Atlantic Division standings for the first time this season.

DiPietro allowed the first shooter to score and then stopped the next five. Bill Guerin had the other score for the Islanders. The Islanders came into the contest as one of four teams to not participate in a shootout this season. The Islanders were 8-5 during the 2006-07 and are now 18-8 since the shootout was instituted prior to the 2005-06 season. Rick DiPietro was 5-4 during the 2006-07 season and is 14-7 all-time.

JOE'S SHOW CONTINUES: Josef Vasicek connected on a goal Wednesday night against Ottawa to give him a team-high nine goals for the season. Vasicek scored the game-winning goal for the Islanders on November 19th at Madison Square Garden and also scored a goal in three straight games from November 12th through November 19th. His nine goals total three more than he scored all last year as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes in 63 games. Vasicek had a five-game point scoring streak snapped on November 21st against Montreal.

DP'S 100-WIN BENCHMARK: Rick DiPietro picked up a shutout victory on November 16th in New Jersey and then a 2-1 win at Madison Square Garden on November 19th to earn his 100th NHL victory. DiPietro became the fourth Islander netminder to pick up 100 wins, joining Billy Smith, Glen Resch and Kelly Hrudey. At the age of 26, DiPietro is the youngest of the four to reach 100 wins. So far on the season Rick has tallied a 12-7-1 record in 21 games, while registering two shutouts. He is currently four wins away from tying Hrudey for third on the Islanders all-time wins list.

THE ATLANTIC TRIP: The Islanders began a stretch starting on November 3rd that consisted of seven straight meetings against Atlantic Division opponents. The Islanders went 5-2-0 over this span, with their only two losses coming in Philadelphia (11/12) and in Pittsburgh (11/15). Each of the seven games were decided by one goal. On the season, the Orange and Blue are 3-0-0 against both the Devils and Rangers, 1-1-0 against Penguins and 0-2-0 against the Flyers. The next division game will be tonight when the Islanders travel to Madison Square Garden and play the Rangers.

SILLINGER'S 1000-GAME BENCHMARK: Seventeen-year veteran and current Islanders center Mike Sillinger reached a milestone that few wearing the Orange and Blue have crossed. Sillinger took the ice on 11/1 vs. Tampa Bay for the 1,000th time in his career, making him the 223rd player in the NHL to do so and fifth this year. During his 17-year career, Sillinger has played for 12 different teams while collecting 226 goals, 300 assists and 526 points. Sillinger has been a member of the Islanders organization since the start of the 2006-07 season and has accumulated 30 goals, 38 assists and 68 points in 104 games. He has yet to miss a spot in the lineup since coming to the Islanders, appearing in 82 games in 2006-07 and the first 22 games of 2007-08.

HATS OFF TO BILL GUERIN: Bill Guerin ended his longest scoreless drought to begin a season with a new team by posting his ninth career hat trick during a 5-2 victory over Washington on 10/18. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Guerin became the first player in NHL history to record a hat trick with six different teams during the regular season (Boston, Dallas, New Jersey, New York Islanders, San Jose and St. Louis). He was previously tied with the New York Rangers' Brendan Shanahan, who recorded a hat trick with his fifth different organization while playing for the Rangers in 2006-07.

COMRIE WINS SECOND STAR HONOR: It took less than a week for Mike Comrie to gain the support of Islanders fans world wide, and for his effort, he earned the NHL’s Second Star of the Week honors. In two games, the Edmonton-native scored four goals and two assists to help lead the Islanders to a 2-0-0 record to begin the season. The Islanders posted consecutive victories over the defending Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Buffalo Sabres. In Buffalo Oct. 5, Comrie tallied two goals, including the winner, and two assists as the Islanders defeated the Sabres, 6-4. The next night on Long Island, Comrie recorded two goals, including the winner, in a 3-2 triumph. Comrie, 27 years old and in his eighth NHL season, signed with New York as a free agent on July 5 after finishing last year with the Stanley Cup finalist Ottawa Senators.

STORYLINES

SURF’S UP FOR WITT: Defenseman Brendan Witt has been an avid surfer since first hitting the

waves at the age of four in Ocean City, Maryland. Witt takes annual surfing trips to exotic locales and had a

run-in with a shark in 2005 while vacationing in Hawaii. “I think we just scared each other,” said Witt.

AL ARBOUR’S ENCORE: Hall of Fame coach Al Arbour returned to Long Island to coach his 1,500th

regular season game with the Islanders on Nov. 3 when the team hosted Pittsburgh Penguins. The legendary

coach celebrated his 75th

birthday on November 1. Arbour accepted an invitation from Ted Nolan to run the

team for one last game and reach the milestone of 1,500 games coached with the franchise he led to four

consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 - 1983. The Islanders won the game 3-2 and Arbour picked up his 740th

win with the club.

DUBIE EARNS IT: Islanders goaltender/cult hero Wade Dubielewicz was rewarded with a one-year,

one-way contract this season after helping lead the Islanders to the playoffs last season. Stepping in for the

injured Rick DiPietro, Dubielewicz – the No. 1 goaltender in Bridgeport (AHL) for four seasons – led the

Islanders to four consecutive wins to end the season, making the playoffs on the last day with a shootout

victory in New Jersey.

DYNASTIC BLOODLINES: Islanders prospect forward Jeff Tambellini is the son of Steve

Tambellini, a forward on the Islanders’ first Stanley Cup team in 1980. In training camp with the Islanders in

September in Moncton were forward Justin Bourne, the son of four-time Cup winner and Islanders Hall of

Famer Bob Bourne, and defenseman Jordan Hart, son of longtime defenseman Gerry Hart, who played a big

role in the development of the team in its first seven seasons of existence. Bourne and Hart are in the

Islanders’ minor league system.

FIRST NATIONS PRIDE FOR NOLAN, CHABOT SIMON: Islanders head coach Ted Nolan,

assistant coach John Chabot, and forward Chris Simon are members of the First Nations Ojibway tribe and

dedicate countless hours to good works on behalf of their tribe, including teaching hockey to First Nations

children. Nolan’s work during his time away from the NHL earned him the National Aboriginal Achievement

Award and the Order of Ontario. Until Nolan and Chabot coached together this season, the NHL had never

before had two First Nations coaches behind the same bench.

“INSPIRED” ISLANDERS: Rexcorp Islanders Inspire is the team’s new charity initiative in which area

businesses and individuals purchase tickets for underserved children for home games. RexCorp Islanders

Inspire transcends the goals of most charitable ticket programs by also providing round-trip bus transportation

Page 23: Thursday, November 29, 2007 NHL Game #: 357rangers.nhl.com/ext/112907_NYINYR.pdf · Thursday, November 29, 2007 NHL Game #: 357 New York Rangers Team Game: 25 Home Game: 13 13 - 9

for the children in need. Several Islanders players have taken a leadership role in the program by making

significant donations. They include captain Bill Guerin and Mike Comrie – who announced their contribution

at their introductory press conference in July – along with Rick DiPietro, Jon Sim and Ruslan Fedotenko.

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY SUPPORTS HER HOME TEAM: Supermodel Christie Brinkley has been a

major Islanders advocate over the last year. She started coming to Islanders games with her teenage son, a

hockey player and big Islanders fan. Brinkley, who was honored by the Islanders for her humanitarian efforts

at this year’s season opening ceremonial faceoff, recorded a TV commercial for the Islanders that was

featured on “Extra” and has become a You Tube staple.

DUNHAM GOES FROM PLAYER TO COACH: Instead of signing with another NHL team for what

would have been his 11th

NHL season, three-time U.S. Olympian Mike Dunham retired as a player to become

goalie coach. Dunham played his final season with the Islanders in 2006-07 and was lauded for his work with

fellow goaltenders DiPietro and Dubielewicz. Dunham will work with all of the goaltenders in the Islanders’

system.

TWO LEGENDS RETURN: Islanders Hall of Famers Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy are in their

second seasons back with their former club. As Executive Director of Player Development, Trottier works with

all of the young players in the system. As Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Bossy develops

partnerships with local and national sponsors and is the executive director of the Islanders Business Club.

ISLES INTERACTIVE INNOVATIONS:

Islanders TV: Behind the technology of Neulion, a Plainview, Long Island-based company run

by Nancy Li, the wife of Islanders owner Charles Wang, the Islanders are leading the way in internet based

television in the sports world. Islanders TV started last season and now every team in the NHL is signed up.

The NYI Blog Box: The Islanders became the first team in major pro sports to open a

separate press box for bloggers and link team bloggers to their official website. The NYI Blog Box is located in

section 201 of the Coliseum and the team provides credentials to up to a dozen bloggers each home game.

Islandermania Fan Message Board: The Islanders also became the first pro sports team to

take an existing fan message board and invite its members to become the team’s official message board.

Islandermania is run by fan-moderators who monitor the site for inappropriate use (profanity) but do not

censor criticism. When appropriate, Islanders officials personally address specific issues on the message

board.

New York RangersHead Coach

Tom Renney

Notes: Is now in his third season as Head Coach and eighth season with the Rangers. After being named the 33rd head coach in franchise history on July 6, 2004, Renney has led the Rangers to 40-or-more wins in consecutive seasons, a feat last accomplished by the club in 1974. On November 10, 2007, he won his 100th game as the Rangers' Head Coach becoming just the eighth person in franchise history to reach the mark.

In 2006-07, Renney compiled a 42-30-10 record during the regular season and helped the Blueshirts reach the playoffs for the second time in as many years. He also guided the team to a first-round playoff sweep last season, marking New York’s first since 1994. Season highlights include his 100th career victory (Nov. 21 vs. Carolina) and his first career playoff win (Apr. 12 at Atlanta). During the 2005-06 season, Renney guided the team to a 44-26-12 mark, and with 100 points, turned in the sixth-highest point total in club history. After leading the Blueshirts to the post-season for the first time since 1997, he was tabbed a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, given annually to the league's most outstanding coach.

2007-2008 Notes:* Won his third consecutive season opener on Oct. 4 vs. Florida, and is now 3-0-0 in season openers with the Rangers.* Notched his 100th win as the Rangers' Head Coach on Nov. 10 at Toronto.
