Thank you to Jenn, Ben, and Daxton for their inspirational posters. They are now displayed in our classroom window! I would love to add your poster whenever yours is finished. Just let me know!

Students today we will quiet our minds and bodies with yoga again. First find a good spot that is on carpet, away from furniture and where you can still see your device. You will need enough space to move your arms and legs in front of you and to the side. You might

LITERACY ~ NOVEL STUDY

. Families – In class we have discussed what good

readers do before, during, and after reading. Another helpful strategy is to read the questions before reading the chapter and look for key words. Remember to use the question to help you write the answer. As well, rereading and skimming are also strategies that the students have used when reading for specific information GRADE 3- JUDY MOODY NOVEL STUDY The entire novel ‘Judy Moody’ is available on a file on the ‘Online Opportunities’ page. It might be helpful to read the questions first so you can focus on key words when you are reading. Remember, the words from the question will help you write the answer. Please finish the novel by reading Chapter 11 - The Me Collage and Chapter 12 – Band-Aids and Ice Cream.

Please complete the Chapter Connections for both chapters. Tell how the title connects to the events or characters in that part of the book. Chapter Reflection. Please answer the questions. Remember to use complete sentences. If time permits, please do some independent reading.

GRADE 4- RAMONA QUIMBY NOVEL STUDY Hopefully you have finished reading “Ramona Quimby’. If not, please take time to read it now. Remember the part of the novel in chapter 7 when Ramona is sick at home and watches tv on the couch? She found the daytime programs boring and thought the commercials were more interesting. The worksheet below describes some commercials and then you will use the reading skill of inferring. What is the commercial trying to tell you about the main character?

To infer, use your background knowledge WITH the information you have in order to make your best guess.

If time permits, please do some independent reading.

Families - Throughout the unit on financial literacy, students will

have opportunities to gain fluency with coins and bills. Students are encouraged to use skip counting skills and ‘adding on’ skills, to draw ‘groups of’ and/or use real-life coins and bills (if possible).

MOVEMENT BREAK Click on the tab for ‘Movement Break’. This is the time to take a break! (or whenever your body needs one!). MATH ~ GRADE 3 Today we are working on: Today we are working on: adding money. Adding collections of money is two-digit and three-digit addition – just with a decimal in between the amounts of the dollars and the cents! Just like a place value chart – 100s is dollars, 10s is dimes and 1s cents! Hint: Remember to line up the numerals when you are copying them down! Do your addition carefully: Question 3 has some equations that require regrouping. Watch this video for a quick review on addition with regrouping. It even uses base 10 blocks exactly like our lessons at school! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT55rmXXLrg

Two options for this work, you can either print the math sheet and work directly on it OR you can write the answers on a blank piece of paper. Try to do about 30 minutes of math each day. If time permits after your written assignment, play this game. Do the passengers have enough money to pay for the bus? Your mental math skills will come in handy! http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/money/busmath_easy.htm

MATH ~ GRADE 4 Today we are going to create our own financial literacy project. You will need some paper, a pencil and something to colour with. You are going to pretend you have a store. You need to decide what type of store it is (for example candy store, pet store, craft store, sporting goods, bookstore) At the top of your paper, please write the type of store. Then list 5 items you will sell and their prices. You need to number your items, as I will be referring to them by number as I won’t know what your items are. (ex. Item 1 is Fun Dips in my store but will be something different in your store) Each item must be more than $4.00 but less than $100.00. As well, each item must have a different price and each item must not be an even dollar amount (ex. nothing can $5.00 or $10.00, it must be $5.87 or $10.02) See my example:

Mrs. Dillen’s Candy Store

1. Fun Dips $4.76 2. Lollipops $86.34 3. Cotton candy $37.43 4. Gumballs $99.99 5. Gummy cola bottles $18.04

2. Lollipops $86.34

3. Cotton candy $37.43

4. Gumballs $99.99

5. Gummy cola bottles $18.04

Now draw a picture of each item you are selling. Now I would like you to do some math with your items. Remember it is VERY IMPORTANT to line up your decimals when you are doing addition or subtraction.

1. Item 1 plus Item 2 2. Item 3 plus Item 4

Page 14: Thursday May 14 · 2020-05-14 · Thursday, May 14 MORNING MEETING Hello Division 8! Did you like the joke book on Epic and did you enjoy PE? Zoom Meeting Remember we have a meeting

3. Items 5 plus Item 5 (you could also solve this by doing Item 5 times 2)

4. Item 1 plus Item 3 plus Item 5 5. Your most expensive item minus your least expensive item

Now pretend I came into your store. I want to buy Item 3 from you. I have $100.00. How will you make my change? Will you subtract Item 3 from $100.00 or will you count up from the cost of the item to $100.00? (both ways work, do what it is easier for you!) 6. What is my change? 7. Ms. Lo is now visiting your store and she wants to buy Item

2 and Item 5. What is the cost of both items together? 8. She is also paying with $100.00. Is she able to afford both

items? If so, what is her change? If not, how much more money does she need?

Our “Weird But True” and “Guinness World Record books are very popular in our classroom. We all seem to enjoy learning new and interesting facts!

Today we are going to watch several short videos in the series called FUN FACTS!

You will need a piece of paper and a pencil for this lesson.

Please fold your piece of paper in half, then in half again so you have four squares.

In the first square, write “Elephants” and then watch the video and write down one thing you learned.
