What is Earth'smagnetic field? Earth's magneticfield is the magneticfield that extendsfrom the Earth'sinterior out into thespace, where itinteracts with thesolar wind, a streamof charged particlesemanating from thesun It is created bythe movement of liq-uid iron in theEarth's outer core,some 2,896 kmbelow our feet
How does it work? The iron is super hot (over 3,000 degrees Celsius and likewater flows very easily. While flowing, it drags the magnetic field with it, and itscorresponding North and South poles.
Are magnetic poles the sameas geographical poles? No. These magnetic North andSouth Poles are different fromthe geographic North and Southpoles. The geographic North andSouth poles are in a fixed posi-tion; they are diametricallyopposite to each another However, the magnetic Northand South Poles are constantlymoving. Over time, they becomemisaligned with their geographicequivalents
How often does the Earth flip poles? According to scien-tists, the Earth's magnetic field regularly flips poles in every few100,000 years. The latest World Magnetic Model, which tracks themovement of the Earth’s magnetic field, revealed last year that themagnetic North pole is moving on its own. Last year,researchers reported that the Earth's magnetic North Pole is travel-ling at a rate of 48km per year. This is the fastest recorded shift ofthe Earth's north, since the mid-16th century, they say
Why do these changes happen? Scientists say theserapid changes are due to the local weakening of the mag-netic field. This means that these changes have generallyoccurred around times, when the field has reversed polari-ty or during, what are known as, 'geomagnetic excursions'
