SUGAR SENT TO THIS STATE BY REFINERY Washington, June 19—Savannah Sugar Refining- corporation, Savan- nah, Ga., today advised Senator Clyde R. Hoey by telegram of im- mediate shipment of 16 carloads of sugar to its North Carolina distri- butors. The company explained it was rushing shipments to North Caro- lina communities although it had been hard pressed to meet demands of Georgia and South Carolina, along with high export schedules for oversea relief. In the last two days 11 carloads of sugar have been dispatched to eight Tar Heel cities by the Amer- ican Sugar company, Baltimore, Md. The new supplies it is under- stood, will be available to domestic and commercial users alike. FERTILIZER Fifteen of the Government's ex- plosive-manufacturing plants are to be reopened and converted to the production of nitrogen fertilizers for shipment to famine-stricken countries abroad, according to the War Department. The plants are expected to have a maximum of 70,000 tons of ammonium nitrate a month, or about 50 per cent in- crease in the emergency period over 1 present commercial production in ! this country.
