LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Water conservation is essentialI see discussions on water

supply come up regularly inthe paper and rightfully so, itis of real concern to all resi-dents.

All these comments are apersonal view not one of Coun-cil.

It is ironic really that welive in a wet climate, with twomajor rivers, two mountainswith streams and springs, andare also surrounded by manylakes, yet we have water

restrictions during the sum-mer.

Conservation of water isessential, but it does not, andwill not solve our long termfuture supply.

I’m not entirely convincedabout water meters. They willbe to the benefit of someresidents, but may well penal-ise people with young families.

The money spent onmeters, along with savings inother areas, would be a good

start towards funding a muchneeded, new treatment plant.

The new suggested CCOwater company creates morequestions than answers, also Idon’t believe the MayoralForum is the right body tomake these decisions.

We must be prophets of ourown future, making a positivedecisions for Waipa, by Wai-pa, where, when and how weare going to address the issue.

The sooner we make the

commitment and budget forthe funding the better.

But don’t let big figureslike $60 million, or whatever, scare you — there is huge costnow in supply and mainten-ance.

If we make the commit-ment our district will grow inconfidence and future resi-dents will help pay for andbenefit from it.

Young need to vote — Lorde

AP14070200550

LORDE (aka Ella Yellich O'Connor) isencouraging young people to enrol forthis year’s general election.

Lorde isn't older enough to vote herself— she's just 17 — but says she can't wait tovote.

Two videos of the singer have recentlybeen released with the Grammy-awardwinner talking about how important it isfor young people to have a say in thecoming elections.

“Right now I don't have a voice, andthat's why I need you to use yours in thiselection,” she says, wearing her trade-mark purple lipstick.

“Voting is one of those things that I'vebeen weirdly looking forward to for a longtime, kind of like people who are like, ‘Iwant to go to a bar for the first time'. I'mlike, ‘I wanna go vote', which is kind ofweird of me I guess.”

The video was created in conjunctionwith the Electoral Commission.

Registrar of Electors Sandra Wood saysit’s great to see young people talking aboutvoting, something that needs to happenmore often.

“We had two friends come in to theoffice to enrol, both almost 18. One turns18 a week after the election on September

20, which means he won’t be able to votethis time round.

“So we had one really excited aboutenrolling and voting for the first time andthe other one disappointed he will have towait for three years until he can vote.”

She says New Zealand enrolment and

voting figures are steadily dropping, fol-lowing a world-wide trend, with 18-24year-olds the least enrolled group. How-ever, the Electoral Commission is hopingto target the newest generation of voters.

In the Taranaki-King-Country elector-ate 78% of the estimated eligible 18-24year-olds have enrolled to vote, with morethan 1000 still to sign up.

“We want young people to have thechance to have their say on the issues thataffect them, like the minimum hourlywage, how old you need to be to get adriver’s licence and income tax rates.”

The first step is to get enrolled and ifyou are 18 or older you can do that now.

“It’s easy. To get an enrolment form, jump online at elections.org.nz, freetextyour name and address to 3676, call 0800 3676 56 or pop into a PostShop. You can evendo it on Facebook at IvoteNZ.”

On April 1, 1987 ahouse in Kihikihiopened its doors as aplace of support for thecommunity. The houseitself had been given byan anonymous donor.

PREPARING FOR THE OUTAGES

Why is the power going off?

Te Awamutu is connected to the National Grid by a single 110 kV transmission line from Karapiro substation. As owner and operator of the National Grid, Transpower needs to urgently replace a critical piece of electrical equipment, prior to the end of winter, at the Karapiro Substation to ensure a reliable supply of electricity to the Te Awamutu area.

We have worked with your local lines company Waipa Networks to find a time that will cause as little disruption as possible to the local community. Power supply will be turned off to the area on two occasions – the first on Tuesday 19 August, 12:00am – 4:00am and the second on Tuesday 26 August, 12:00am – 4:00am.

The power outage will affect the following areas: Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Kiokio, Kawhia, Ohaupo, and Pukeatua.

Transpower recognises that there is never an ideal time for consumers to be without electricity and apologise for any inconvenience this power outage may cause.

Crashes question road safetyAfter the third serious crash

between a car and an animal inrecent weeks, Waikato Police areasking landowners to check theirfences and drivers if they are driv-ing to the conditions.

District Road Policing Manager,Inspector Freda Grace, said the callcomes after the latest incident thatleft a driver injured.

“In this collision a man driving aSubaru car has collided with a bullon Maungatautari Rd near Cam-bridge about 5.55am yesterday.

“Conditions at the time weredark with light drizzle. The driversuffered minor injuries in the crashand was treated by attending ambu-

lance staff but the outcome couldhave been far worse.”

Mrs Grace said this crash was thesecond this week with two peopleinjured in a collision between a carand a horse at Arapuni about thesame time on Monday.

“And on 23 June, a Matamatawoman was killed when her carcollided with a horse, the stakes arereally quite high in rural areas suchas the Waikato and we’re imploringlandowners to check the integrity oftheir fences and gates.

“At the same time we also askmotorists to check their cars are upto warrant of fitness standard andtheir headlights are working pro-

perly. Each of the collisions outlinedare still under investigation so Ican’t comment if faulty lights werean issue, but it makes sense to checkyour car as a precaution.”

Mrs Grace said motorists werealso reminded that it was a legalrequirement that their driving bein such a manner that if somethingunexpected happens they can stoptheir car in half the length of roadvisible.

“If land owners and road usersdo their part we will all be going along way to ensuring incidentslike today’s are avoided and Wai-kato roads are a safe place totravel.”

TOP TRUCKIE: Fonterra Te Awamutu Driver of Excellence Ian Plowright.

Ian Plowright is this year’swinner of the Driver of ExcellenceAward for the Fonterra Te Awa-mutu depot.

The award celebrates his pro-fessional driving throughout the2013/14 milk collection season aswell as his commitment to theFonterra values of: Doing what’sright; Making it happen; Challeng-ing Boundaries; and showing Co-operative spirit.

This coveted title is awardedafter critical analysis of dailyreports that are generated fromthe on board Tanker ActivityManagement System (TAMS).

This system provides informa-tion about each driver’s perform-

ance and driving style. The information that is

captured is comprehensive andincludes facets such as: maximumroad speed, degree of acceleration, intensity of braking, inertiathreshold while cornering and fuelconsumption. As well, a range ofstatistical data is captured includ-ing number of farms and milkcollected.

Te Awamutu Transport Depotmanager, Matt Roberts, saysTAMS provides valuable informa-tion and is an essential manage-ment tool. It ensures that Fonterramilk tankers are driven in a safeand efficient manner to ensure thewell-being of all road users and so

our team can get home safely toour families everyday.

All finalists had to sit a com-prehensive questionnaire cover-ing five separate subject areaswhich covered the road code, heavy traffic legislation, milk col-lection procedures and health andsafety.

Mr Plowright says the test waschallenging and required somedeep thinking to complete. He ishonoured to be the winner of theaward which is open to all 120tanker operators at the Te Awa-mutu site.

In the garden with

SALEWinter

Daylight hours are already increasing and spring is just around the corner.

Hellebore Penny’s Pink

Winter and spring annuals like Primrose, Polyanthus and Primula, plus Poppies and Pansies, are flowering profusely. A regular dead heading of spent flowers and a top up feed every two weeks with dried blood or Nitrosol will keep them flowering right through until Labour weekend. Nemesia, Dianthus and Snap Dragons all add extra spring colour for September and October and can be planted from now.

It’s a good time to prepare your garden beds for spring planting by digging in now generous amounts of compost and general garden fertiliser. For edible garden beds also add lime to improve soil structure.

Spring wouldn’t be the same without flowering Magnolias and Cherry Blossom. The best selection is arriving in store now so be in quick. Michelia Doltsopa Silver Cloud puts on a stunning show of large creamy white scented blooms and is the earliest to flower; a single branch will fill the house with scent.

Magnolia Fairy Blush and the new Fairy White and Fairy Cream make lovely small trees for any size garden and can be hedged or topiaried. Michelia Yunnanensis varieties and Port Wine Magnolias keep those scented flowers coming well into spring.

Plant with Tui Organic Compost and Nufert, plus add slow release fertiliser tablets for the best results.

Deciduous trees look great under-planted with a mass display of bulbs or Hellebores (winter roses), which provide a stunning display of late winter and spring flowers. Plant with plenty of blood and bone mixed into your soil and mulch with sheep pellets. Look out for new varieties such as ‘Tutu’ and ‘Winter Sunshine’ and ‘Ivory Prince’, and look out for new varieties Penny’s Pink, Anna’s Red and Ruby Glow which all have beautiful flowers above stunning foliage.

Happy Gardening from the team at Palmers

“Gats is a Te Awamutu Col-lege old boy so I asked if hecould be available for afundraiser.

“We are fortunate he hasallocated some time for us whilehe is home. He is proving to be agreat drawcard for the event.”

Mr Muir says the eveningwill be a ‘Q&A’ format with MCRonnie Phillips and then will beopen to the audience.

“It gives people a chance toask things they want to knowabout Gats.”

Gatland's early secondaryschooling was at Te Awamutu

He was in the 1977 teamphoto and report for the 6thgrade team, which listed him asa standout No 8 in the unbeatenteam led by captain RobertWetere.

He was also captain of thethird form cricket team thatyear.

In 1978 he played in theunder 91⁄2 stone team whichfinished second in the Waikatocompetition.

The report notes that he waspart of a mobile forward packand “a great future is antici-pated for many of the boys fromthis team” which was captainedby Wayne Annan.

Gatland represented North-ern Region Secondary Schools,as well as Waikato SecondarySchools, before progressing tothe Waikato Colts in 1984.

He made his Waikato debutin 1986 after spending the entire

1985 season as reserve hooker inthe ‘A’ squad.

He took over captaincy ofWaikato in 1988.

Gatland was a stalwart ofWaikato provincial rugby, breaking several records alongthe way, and played against the1993 Lions, scoring a try as theprovince hammered the tour-ists 38-10.

He then went onto higherhonours — playing 17 matchesfor the All Blacks, scoring twotries.

An emphatic 38-6victory over the Sharksat AMI Stadium inChristchurch hasbooked the Crusadersa place in the 2014Super Rugby final.

The last New Zea-land team standingnow takes on theWaratahs at ANZStadium in Sydney onSaturday.

The Crusaders out-scored the Sharks byfive tries to none in thesemi-final

Crusaders captainKieran Read scored theonly try of the first halfand helped his team toa 16-6 lead at half time.

The Crusadersturned up the pressurein the second half andscored four tries includ-ing Nemani Nadolo's11th try of the season.

Crusaders star DanCarter landed five of hisnine shots at goal —kicking two conversionsand landing three pen-alties.

The Sharks pointsall came from PatrickLambie's boot, but theirkicking games provedaimless and allowedthe Crusaders to sendwaves of counter attack

at the visitors whostruggled to keep upwith the Crusaders.

The lack of a kickinggame cost the Sharksdearly.

Seven minutes intothe second half NemaniNadolo scored the

Crusaders second trywhich was followed inthe 65th minute by

replacement WilliHeinz's try.

The Sharks enjoyedlittle time in theCrusaders 22 and fourminutes after Heinz had

scored the Crusadersturned the ball over andran 95m to sendJohnny McNicholl overfor their fourth try.

The Crusaders gotthe ultimate reward twominutes from timewhen they beat theSharks at their owngame by kicking for thecorner and line out froma penalty and thensending Matt Todd overin a maul.

Captain KieranRead says he waspleased with his team'sperformance, turningthe tables on theSharks who won 25-30earlier in the season.

“I'm extremely satis-fied, we started reallywell and we were ableto put a bit of pressureon early.

“We played a prettyhigh tempo and weactually caught themout.

"Knowing that we'regoing to the big stagethis weekend is anawesome feeling.”

The Crusaders beatthe Waratahs in the2005 and 2008 SuperRugby finals, but bothmatches were in NewZealand.

Ten boys from Te Awamutu’sGwynne Shield side featured inthe recent City vs Country con-test.

The annual fixture involvedtwo games, both won by theCountry side (39-15, 29-20), whichsaw the local boys take home theprized trophy.

The fixture also doubled as atrial for the Waikato Roller Millsside.

Te Awamutu Gwynne Shieldcoach David Fox was delighted tosee seven of his team make thewider training squad of 30.

He gives his thoughts on eachof the local players’ strengths:• Ihaka Rakatairi (winger) is abeautifully balanced runner andnaturally talented player whohas the ability to beat hisopposite either with speed, stepor swerve.• Ahu Edwards (first-five) is athinking first-five and directsplay beyond his years. He is astrong drop punter of the ball andis a very accurate goal kicker.• Te Kapa Crown (centre/wing)has the ability to play strongly ateither centre or wing and isdefensively very strong. Hestraightens the back-line up withhis strong and aggressive run-ning and has the skill to put hisoutsides into space.• Grasyn Paikea (flanker) is astrong tackling No7, has the greatskill of getting up underneath theball carrier and effects manyturnover. Gryson is also a greatlink player and has the ability tobeat players with his step.• Jack Gibson (hooker/prop) is ahard working forward and canplay effectively at either hookeror prop and is strong at tackle

time around the rucks. He istechnically very sound at thecontact area and never gives uptrying.• Jackson Tims (lock) is an oldfashioned type forward in themould of Andy Earl. He rolls hissleeves up and gets stuck in. He isa strong ball carrier, strong ondefensive and at the contact area

and just keeps going like anEnergiser battery.• Dylan Jeffries (No8/6) is asmart player, strong running andcan be damaging off the back ofthe scrum heading into space. Hecan also beat a player with hisstep and reads a gameoutstandingly well and help wingames with his covering defence.

Fourth for FirehawksTe Awamutu Sports

Firehawks Rugby LeagueReserves were unable to repeattheir 2013 efforts of making thefinals when they were defeatedon Saturday by Hamilton CityTigers.

The 28-22 loss confirmedtheir final placing of fourth inthe Waikato Premier ReserveCompetition.

While disappointed that thiswas the end of their season, coach Kane Rangitonga says hewas proud of what the team hasachieved this year.

“In the end we lost to a goodteam, and while there is alwaysgoing to be speculation aboutpremier clubs allowing playersin their premier and reserveteams to interchange duringsemis and finals, it’s neverbeen an excuse for us.

“I had to quickly remindmyself how much the team hasprogressed in 12 months fromfinishing second in the 2013Senior competition to beingfourth in 2014 PremierReserves.

“In retrospect this indicatesthe team is better than overhalf of the Premier Reserveteams who played in 2014which isn’t a bad way to endyour first season back at thislevel.”

Rangitonga says from thekick off Tigers’ large forwardpack implemented some torridand intimidating defence.

“The Firehawks soaked uppressure and were eventuallyable to gain some good fieldposition, which led to the theirfirst try to outstanding secondrower, Ulyssis Kara-Stafford.”

Before Tigers could reply,Issac Howell crossed again togive the Firehawks an 8-0 lead.

Tigers replied with a try andconversion, before KirkhamReweti scored for theFirehawks, extending theirlead to 12-6.

Tigers then replied withthree unconverted tries aftergaps were found on the outeredges of the Hawks defence, tolead 18-12 at half time.

A try to Firehawks starwinger, Kylie Diamond, converted by Henare Raukawa, locked the game at 18 all justafter half time.

Tigers then scored andconverted to lead again by24-18.

After beating the markerdefence, Kylie Diamond scoredhis second try to have theHawks trailing by just two,24-22.

Two disallowed tries, whichwere questioned by some of theFirehawk players, led to thereferee sending Areka Waho tothe sin bin for 10 minutes.

It was during this time thatthe Tigers scored anunconverted try with 10minutes to play to lead by 28-22.

The Firehawks never gaveup, breaking the Tigers defenceline a number of times only tobe stopped with desperatedefence as time ran out.

Rangitonga and Te Awa-mutu Sports Firehawks RugbyLeague Reserves are thankfulto their committee and sup-porters for their continued sup-port throughout the 2014season.

“While we are disappointedwe couldn’t deliver the ‘fairy-tale’ ending, we have developedinto a team that every club inWaikato Premier Reservescompetition has great respectfor.”
