Greetings from your Club President.

July is finally here and hopefully we will have several hot and humid summer days to remind us why we love the four seasons of Minnesota.

The weather has been a challenge and I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to strike a balance between the expense of staying open vs. closing and canceling certain events. Vince and his staff deserve credit for staying flexible. For Memorial Day, our reservations jumped from 45 to 300

in two hours. Vince and his staff were able to handle this increase with ease, and meet all our member needs.

As your Club President, I am always trying to improve the member experience and create new ideas. In the 1920’s the Club had it’s first Derby Day. This year the Board has decided to organize Club wide events over four days called “DERBY DAYS” which will run from Thursday, August 18 to Sunday, August 21.

On Thursday, August 18 we will be inviting ALL members, including Social to participate in the first ever 9-hole par 3 tournament. We have challenged Bill Larson and his staff to transform the front nine into a Par 3 course with tees from fun and never before seen locations. This will be a 5:00pm shotgun. Sign up early for this new twist on our golf course.

After Par 3 golf on August 18, we will be hosting the first Derby Days Kick-Off Party atop the hill of the practice range. Even if you do not golf, please join us to enjoy our signature view from this rarely used location. A cash bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be offered. Enjoy live music from 7:00pm-11:00pm. The price for the par 3 Golf event is $10 per golfer. The Kick-Off Party is free for everyone. I encourage all Social members to take advantage of this great Par 3 golf opportunity. Transportation will be provided up the hill. This is an adults only event.

On Friday, August 19 there will be a Women’s Member-Member Derby Days shotgun at 8:00am. The first day of the Men’s Member-Member will take place at 1:00pm. Golfing members only.

On Saturday, August 20, the course will be open for normal play in the morning and the second day of the Men’s Member-Member will take place at 12:00pm followed by a shootout.

Please see The Golf Shop to sign-up for these Member-Member events.

On Saturday, August 20 at 7:00pm, there will be a “Dance Under the Stars” by the Pool. All Social and Golfing members are invited to attend. The setting is quite special with our Pool lit up and the tiki torches flaming to the beat of soft Caribbean music. Enjoy four food stations of special food selections prepared by the Chef. I encourage all members to attend this event. The cost for the pool party only is $20.

On Sunday, August 21, there will be special Derby Days tennis events.

For our grand finale, on Sunday August 21, we will be hosting a Derby Days pool party and festival for the whole family. We will have a water balloon toss, coin dive, relay races, and cannon ball contest. The cost for the Derby Days Family Pool Party is $20 for Adults and $10 for children ages 5-12. The Front Desk will be taking reservations for this event or you can register online.

Come out and enjoy Derby Days which I hope will last as a tradition for many years to come. See you around the Club. Pat

Parking Lot Safety No incidents thus far, but let’s just say we have been blessed. I have witnessed myself, and have had many members call me from the rear lot reporting near misses of people and auto collisions. Please remind all that drive in your family that extreme caution should be taken when entering and exiting the parking lots. Members and guests are not as aware as they would be in a public lot. Unfortunately many drivers enter and exit the lot as if they were at the Indy 500. Please be careful.

Membership Photos Club Services of America will be here to take member pictures for our directories on June 29th - July 3rd, July 6th - July 10th, July 13th - July 17th. There is no cost to members for the Club photograph. Images of your photographs will be shown immediately following your sitting, you can then make your Club pose selection and if you are pleased, you may purchase portraits for your personal use. The photographs will be taken on a complimentary basis at the Club. Club Services of America has been calling members to set up the photographic appointments. You may also call them at 1-800-951-0590 to schedule your appointment as well. Thank you in advance for your help on this important project. Important Guest Policy Reminder A Guest as defined in the T&C Club Rules is defined as anyone, regardless of age, who is not a member, a members’ spouse, or child (24 years and younger), who has been invited to use Club facilities under the sponsorship of a member. Such guest(s) must be accompanied at all times by the sponsoring person in the Clubhouse, grounds, golf course, pool and tennis. Abuse of this policy has been occurring at the Pool. Grown children of members and grandchildren are not to utilize the Pool or Tennis Facility unless accompanied by a member as defined above. Saturday, August 6th Campout Don’t miss this night! Tent pitching begins at 6:00pm creek side next to the fourth fairway. Dinner will be served fireside beginning at 7:00pm followed by s 'mores, a bonfire, camp songs, star gazing, kid’s games and more. Wake up to a warm breakfast and the sound of Bill’s crew mowing. Adult beverages will be available.

“Short Gamers”- The Perfect Age to Start Golf!

IT’S ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN! This year we added a new junior golf program called “SHORT GAMERS”. It is designed for 5-7 year olds and has been a tremendous success (as you can see from the pictures!)

What the kids learn: Hand Eye Coordination Skills Introduction to golf & seeing how much fun it can be! How to aim by playing tic-tac-toe or trying to hit bowling pins Good sportsmanship and teamwork

Five to Seven is a critical age to teach your kids how to catch a ball, throw a ball, run through an obstacle course and aim a putter! That is what “Short Gamers” is all about and it’s amazing how much improvement I have seen from each child every week (all in a fun, exciting atmosphere!)

There are still a couple of openings in July and if there is enough interest, we will add an August class.

The dates for July are: June 30th, July 7th, 21st and 28th (no class July 14th). Cost is $60 for the 4-week session. These are all Thursdays and you can either be in the 3:30-4:15 or the 4:15-5:00 class. Please call or email Sara Evens to sign up. 651-797-8086 or [email protected]

WATCH THE TREE TOPS & FLAGSTICKS TO CHECK THE WIND The wind can have a significant influence on your golf ball whether it’s behind you, in your face or coming at you from the side. Knowing that the ball only weighs 1 ½ ounces it doesn’t take much wind to push the ball off line or make it come up short or long. What’s the best way to know the wind’s direction or velocity? When I’m playing, I will constantly observe the tree tops and the flags on the flagsticks. Both the direction and the intensity of their movement will give me a lot of information about the wind. Flagsticks will help you primarily with direction of the wind, but tree tops are more at the same height that the ball will be in flight which is a very important factor. You will notice when watching golf on television, that the caddies and players study the tree tops on a consistent basis. Just a slight breeze of five to ten miles per hour can influence a 1 ½ ounce golf ball. So, let the trees and flagsticks help you judge the wind and you will become a better player.

Fairways and birdies!

July is already upon us and we are at the height of summer activities at the Club. Our fabulous pool & tennis facility is enjoying another bustling season and golf is busy as well. Your continued patronage speaks volumes to the commitment of our membership and your interest in the vitality of the Club. As you may or may not be aware Bill Larson, Gail and crew have created a wonderful new herb and vegetable garden for us. It is located west of the front entrance along the riverside fence. I invite you to stop and view it. There isn’t a garden around with a better view of the Minneapolis skyline! We are currently growing several varieties of tomatoes, greens beans and jalapeno peppers. Our herb collection includes chives, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, Italian parsley and edible flowers. I

am very excited about the expanded space and am looking forward to “farming”. These items are of course, used in various ways in our recipes and dining specials and keep us on the cutting edge of the locavore and hyper local food trends. There are very few restaurants that have the opportunity to treat their patrons to such fresh ingredients and we are fortunate to add this to the list of amenities available to our members and guests. In keeping with our commitment to going green, we have installed an ozone generator in our kitchen. What the heck is that you might ask? Good question. Ozone is nothing more than three oxygen molecules electrically bound together. Unlike the air you breathe (O2), ozone is unsteady and very ready to react to germs, viruses and a host of microbes that are known to cause illness. Ozone is generated naturally from oxygen in the air by electrical discharges such as lightning. The device used in our kitchen generates a high voltage spark across a gap (like a spark plug) to turn oxygen (or room air) into ozone which is then introduced into a water supply to attack any impurities such as iron, arsenic, hydrogen sulfide, nitrites and others. This water is used to wash our fruits and vegetables as well as the preparation areas and tools. Once ozone has done its damage to impurities, it naturally converts back to the stable oxygen we breathe. Ozone treatment has many food safety benefits over chemical or detergent sanitizers, chiefly that it is clean and natural and leaves no residue. It is much safer than chlorine and 3000 times faster in killing impurities and bacteria. Ozone is effective in killing all known bacteria, fungi and yeast strains as well as all known protozoa. It also is effective to oxidize and degrade most organic pollutants including, pesticides, herbicides and a host of other environmental contaminants. We are dedicated to your safety and the integrity of our products and strive to implement the best possible tools to aid in that process, so next time you dine here you can rest just a little easier knowing the extent of the steps taken behind the scenes to enhance your well being.

Power Pool Play - Not your typical water aerobics Three 4 day sessions: $40 or $10 each time Classes are Monday and Friday 10:00am –11:00am Session #2: July 1st, 5th, 8th and 11th Session #3: July 15th, 18th, 22nd, and 25th (make up July 29th if necessary)

I am also introducing an early morning workout in the pool on Wednesdays at 7:00am, to see if there is an interest, especially for those 20-somethings who are working too hard: Wednesdays: July 6th: $10 No registration is required for any of the above.

Please bring your inner child and relearn how to play in the water. I promise you fun, and yet a therapeutic workout. We will walk, run, jump, stretch, dance and use water resistance. Hopefully the benefits from playing in the water will help your strength and flexibility. Get your hair wet, or not. Women of course enjoy this, and I would also like to encourage gentlemen and guests. Exercise according to your ability. Listen to your doctor, if you have any restric-tions. For example, if you have a knee or hip replacement, be gentle. You are lighter in the water and can be more creative in your movement. We will have a swim meet on the last day. Just kidding!

I am an aquatic therapist, retired from Courage Center where I worked for 15 years. I started the Clownfish Swim Club for children and young adults with special needs while at Courage Center and have created my own non-profit 3 years ago, moving our site to Eden Prairie. I am also currently teaching swimming lessons at Williston Fitness Center in Minnetonka.

I look forward to seeing you in the water! Debbie Townsend
