Jasper County Conservation

South Skunk River Cleanup and Hunter

EducationJoin Jasper County Conservation for a fun workday while helping to protect the environment on Saturday August 7, 2010. Volunteers should plan to meet at 9:00 am to pilot a seven mile stretch of the South Skunk River in Jasper County beginning on Highway F-48, just adjacent to I-80 and ending on Highway 14, south of Newton. Along the way, volunteers will remove pop cans, plastic sacks, tires, barrels, and other pieces of trash found in the river and along the riverbanks. Volunteers will receive a free lunch, free canoe use, and a free t-shirt. Participants should dress for the weather, bring work gloves, and wear closed-toe shoes. The Jasper County Conservation Board and the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will offer a Hunter Education Course on Wednesday, August 4, and Thursday, August 5, from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. each day. The course will be held at the Izaak Walton League club-house located northwest of Newton, just off Highways 14 and F-36. The Hunter Educa-tion Course is free and all materials will be provided. Persons must be at least 12 years old to take the course. It is necessary that students attend both days in order to receive certification. Students should also bring a sack lunch. Please register for the Hunter Education Course by creating an account online at www.iowadnr.gov/train-ing. Children ages 12-14 will be required to register under a parent or guardian’s ac-count.
