YEAR 4 OVERVIEW Thursday and Friday Week 1, Term 3 2021 THURSDAY Morning Session Happy Thursday everyone! Many thanks for working hard on your Home Learning. We love the work you are submitting on Seesaw. It was great to see you in our Zoom meeting yesterday and we look forward to seeing you again today. Please look for the meeting link in your Student DET portal email. Mrs. Batistich, Miss Chue, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. McWhinney and Mrs. Richardson WRITING (50 mins) 1.Draw a picture of the main character of your story in the box in your booklet. 2.Identify three character traits that your character has and write an example of how they show this trait. For example if a character is brave they might run into a burning building to save their friend. 3.Write the pebble, rock and boulder section of your story. Tighten tension and you build towards your exciting ending. Include metaphors, similes and dialogue as you highlight the traits of your characters during the events. READING Independent Reading (20 mins) Read a book of your own choice for 15 minutes, record the name of the book and then complete the ‘VISUALISING’ activity on the ‘Independent Reading’ page of your booklet. Shared Reading (30 mins) NAIDOC Week Literature - 'Clever Crow' This activity can be done on Seesaw or on your own paper. Indigenous people tell stories to explain values, expectations, beliefs and many other things. This week we have been learning about NAIDOC week. Each year, NAIDOC Week has a specific theme. This year’s theme is ‘Heal Country!’ Country is more than just the land to the Indigenous Australian Peoples. It is everything - the earth, the sea, the seasons, the stars, the plants and animals, the culture and language, ceremony, tradition. Country is an integral part of identity. 1.Watch the BTN video about what country means to our First Nations People: ‘Celebrating Naidoc Week 2021: Heal Country & First Indigenous Flag Bearer’ https://www.abc.net.au/btn/newsbreak/btn-newsbreak-20210708/13437530 2.Design your own NAIDOC poster on A4 paper that represents the theme

‘Heal Country’ for a school based poster competition. Use colour, pattern and symbols to represent ideas about ‘Heal Country’. Put your name and class on the back of the sheet and give it to your teacher when we all return to school. Lunch Drama (60 mins) Complete this activity on Seesaw. It has been assigned to you and is called ‘Drama Kings and Queens’. You will need to: 1.Watch this video to construct a paper puppet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBYW8e2BVCk&t=458s You will use this puppet to create an interview between you (the interviewer) and an expert (the puppet). 2.Select a topic that you know a lot about. 3.Write a script that is for an interview that is going to be between you and your puppet. It needs to consist of at least 5 questions and have detailed answers explaining your topic well. 4.Perform your interview to a family member and upload a video of it onto Seesaw.

FRIDAY Morning Session WRITING

(50 mins) Conclude your story with an exciting ending and the character wrap-up. Make sure that the reader does not have any unanswered questions once they have finished reading your story.

1.Use a coloured pencil and edit your whole story. Make sure it has appropriate punctuation and that you have banned the boring.

2.Start publishing your story on Seesaw in the “Wonderful Writing” activity. To make sure you have included everything. An editing checklist has been included in the activity.

Your published story needs to be submitted to your teacher by Monday 19/7 at 3pm. READING Independent Reading (20 mins) Read a book of your own choice for 15 minutes, record the name of the book and then spend 10 minutes completing the ‘QUESTIONING’ activity on the ‘Independent Reading’ page of your booklet. Shared Reading (30mins) NAIDOC Week Literature - 'My Country' and 'How we Sleep' This activity can be done on Seesaw or on your own paper. Read the stories 'My Country' and 'How we Sleep' by Ezekial Kwaymullina and Sally Morgan. Words that end with the suffix ‘-ous’ This week we have been learning to spell words that end with the suffix ‘-ous’. Remember, that this suffix means “full of”. Complete the spelling activities page in your booklet.

another way to solve the problem? (Hint: there are at least two different ways to solve it).

UNFINISHED WORK (40 minutes) Is there any work that you have not quite finished this week? Writing? STEM task? NAIDOC poster….etc. This is your opportunity to finish it! If you have finished everything, use this time to be active. Go for a walk, ride your bike OR complete the ‘Home Exercise Mission’ from Tuesday a couple more times. Time yourself to see if you can become quicker. Lunch

Digital Technology (60 mins) Please check your emails as you have been assigned you a short coding task using the Grok Learning platform. Email Mr Brock if you need help. He will monitor your progress.
