YEAR 3 IPAD INFORMATION FOR YEAR 2 PARENTS Just a further reminder that as students in Year 2 transition into Year 3, they have the opportunity to participate in the 1-1 IPAD program. IPAD’s are used in all classrooms as a tool for learning. Given this is a significant financial commitment for parents, we are wanting to inform parents of the approximate cost of these devices for planning purposes. Considering the costs from the past 2 years, the estimated price parents will be required to pay is approximately between $400-$450. This is a subsidised cost from the school and may vary slightly depending on models and costing at the time. If you would like to set up a payment plan in advance for your child’s device, please contact Karen in office for help and support. Although we are informing parents of this early, devices will not be available for collection until late in term 4. Walk to School 2019

JSC Footy Animals Day

You Can Do It

Shane Ezard, Principal

In Term 4, from day one is Walk to School month! So from Monday 7th October to Friday 1st November we are encouraging students and families to walk to school in October. It’s a great way to help students to learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity ever day. Along with the health benefits, active travel options to and from school reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking and helps the environment. So it’s great for the entire school community. By participating, our school will have a chance to win great regional prizes! We will be recording students’ walks during October, so make sure that students write on our bright calendars (which we will have on display like last year) to record how many times students walk, ride or scoot to and from school in October.

GEELONG CUP DAY A reminder to parents that Wednesday 23rd of October is a Pupil Free Day for all Geelong Government schools for the Geelong Cup. Please ensure you have this on the calendar, as there will be no supervision at school on this day. SCHOOL FEES Thanks to all families who have already settled their 2019 fi-nancial contributions. As the end of term three approaches the payment of any outstanding fees is appreciated ASAP. Please see Karen in the office if you have any questions. BUILDING WORKS We will be having some exciting building works at Herne Hill Primary School during the Term 3 break. As part of these works, we will be replacing the landing and ramp outside the 5/6 building, replacing some doors, including new electronic doors to the entry of the school, creating some further paths around the oval and modifications to the 3-5 playground. This is exciting for our community and I look forward to seeing this complete when we return from the break.

Hello to the Herne Hill Community, Welcome to another exciting Student News Update!! Last week we had the Division Athletics, members of The Junior School Council go somewhere special and Senior Constable Robbie Noggler visit our school. The Division Athletics were held at Landy Field on the 10th of September, and a bunch of people from our school took part. It was a lot of fun according to the participants. People who went to the event included Ashton Hunter (my best friend) and Summer Raju (the other School Captain). Also at Division Athletics a new high jump Division record was set...1.52cm!! That’s actually taller than I am! Crikey! On the 11th of September, 3 members of the Junior School Council drove with Ms Johnston to a special shop with recycled things. In the school office, there have been boxes for toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, textas and pens. These things were dropped off at this shop. The group consisted of Summer Raju, Lincoln Boyd and me. At the shop, they sell items that are made from 100% recycled things. The shop is located at 1/112 Pakington Street, Geelong West and things you can bring to the shop are, phones, chargers and other phone accessories, metal/aluminium lids, batteries, dvds, cds, plastic bottle lids and bread tags. On the 9th of September, all Gr 5/6 were visited by Senior Constable Robbie Noggler who gave us a learning session about cyber safety. He is part of the police department and works in the online part of the police. He talked to us about the rules about being online, a law that was made for someone that was cyber bullied (Brodie’s Law) and other things too! He also gave us advice about things to think about before cyber bullying someone. One of these was ‘Would you want someone to do what you are about to do, to you?’ People who are mean and go onto bullying to other people through their computers/iPads can cause a lot of trouble and damage to people. Sometimes, this cannot be repaired! Have a great holiday!! Signing Off, Rafael L

School holidays is a great time to collect any loose change.

We are hoping to raise more than last year… we still have a long way

to go.

Don’t forget to bring your coins into the office. Our Junior School

Council will be deciding on what to do with our total amount, so that means the more we can get the

more ideas on what we can do or get for our school.

There is a display outside the office.

The canteen will not be open the first week of term 4

(Friday 11th October).

Mrs Johnston will be in the produc-tive/Butterfly garden from 9:30am to

12 noon, next Monday 23rd September. Families are very

welcome to come along to help.

Student News: Grade 5/6 Inquiry

Student Banking

Grade 3/4 NGV Excursion

Herne hill Primary School 3/4 students visited the National Gallery of Victoria to view the

Terracotta Warriors: Cai Guo-Quiang exhibition.

We had an introduction talk from an art curator

then we had a tour of the exhibition. After lunch we were able to make our own terracotta warriors. It was a great opportunity for students

and teachers to learn more about Chinese history and contemporary Chinese artist Cai.

Student banking is on Thursdays!

Don’t forget to bring your bank book first week back

of Term 4 (Thursday 10th October)!

Dear parents, The 5/6 students have been doing an inquiry topic called ‘Feeding A Hungry Planet’. We have had weekly tasks through term 3 that were scored out of 5 points. Our last task is worth 15 points and is to do an action about sustainability. We could do things ranging from talking to different year groups, or writing a letter to big companies, anything! I have chosen to see if there is a more sustainable meal/snack for kids, and even adults, than chocolate. I have researched 3 snacks/meals that are more sustainable than chocolate. These 3 snacks/meals are more sustainable as in: no packaging because they’re made fresh, less processed and as a bonus healthier. Here are my 3 sustainable meals/snacks.

The first recipe I found is Apple Betties With Cream. Please note this recipe is from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Cooking book. Step 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Weigh the butter and set aside in the small bowl to allow to come to room temperature. Step 2. Peel the apples. Set out the chopping board and knives. Cut the apples in half from top to bottom, then cut each in half again from top to bottom-so you have quarters. Step 3. Using the small knife, cut out the core and seeds from each apple quarter and then cut each quarter into small pieces and place in a medium bowl. Step 4. Divide the following ingredients equally between the two remaining medium bowls: flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add all the rolled oats to one of the bowls. Step 5. Cut the softened butter into small cubes. Use one cube to rub the inside of the dish/es. Divide the rest of the butter cubes between the 2 bowls. Rub the butter into the mixture, using your hands, until the mixture is crumbly. Step 6. Tip half of the chopped apples into the buttered dish/es. Scatter the mixture without oats over the apples. Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Step 7. Serve hot with a bowl of double cream.

The final recipe I found is Lemon Crêpes. Please note that this recipe is also from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Cooking book. Step 1. Preheat the oven to 120 degrees Celsius and put the ovenproof dish in the oven to keep warm. Weigh the butter and melt in the frying pan over a medium heat, then allow to cool. Step 2. Sift the flour and salt into the large bowl and make a well in the centre. Break the eggs into a medium bowl, add the milk and whisk together lightly. Add the cooled, melted butter to the milk and eggs. Step 3. Tip the egg/butter mixture into the well in the flour and gradually fork in the flour. Using the whisk, mix until smooth. Pour into the jug and refrigerate for 2 hours before cooking. The consistency of the rested batter should be like cream. If the batter is too thick, add a little of the extra milk. Step 4. To cook the crêpes, put a dab of butter on a piece of kitchen paper and grease the base of the frying pan. Heat the pan over a high heat. Step 5. Spoon 1 ladleful of batter into the pan and immediately lift and tilt the pan so the batter flows evenly all over the base of the pan. Place the pan flat on the stove again, reduce the heat to moderate and leave for 1 minute. Shake the pan to ensure the pancake is not sticking and, using the egg lifter, flip the pancake over. After less than a minute on this side, slide the pancake onto the waiting baking tray. Step 6. Continue until you have used all the batter. Try to make your pancakes as thin as possible. You may need to re-butter the base of the frying pan after every 2 or 3 pancakes. Step 7. When all the pancakes are cooked, juice the lemons. Take one pancake at a time, drizzle it with lemon juice, sprinkle it with sugar and roll it up tightly like a sausage. Place the rolled pancakes ina stack in the ovenproof dish in the oven until you are ready to serve.

I hope these 2 recipes helped you and you are now going to use these instead of something like chocolate. By using these, you will be helping the environment and staying healthy too! Have fun making these recipes with your kids. Written by Laura G.

Hello Herne Hill community, This term the Grade Five and Grade Six students have been focussing on ‘sustainability’ for our Inquiry topic. One thing I have learnt during this topic is that plastic is bad for our environment. Did you know that in 2019 plastic bags were banned in Victoria? After 6 months, approximately 200 million plastic bags were stopped from entering landfills. That is a lot of plastic! Plastic is still a big problem though. There are birds and other sea life dying in our oceans because they eat or get tangled up in plastic. A lot of our plastic still ends up in landfills and this is bad because plastic takes a long time to break down. I have noticed that many students at Herne Hill are not listening to Mr Ezard when he asks them to pick up five pieces of rubbish. I would like to see this change. Students, if you see rubbish in the yard please pick it up, even if it is a small piece of plastic and you only have to walk up to a bin. This small action will make a big difference to our school grounds and our environment. By Piper J 5/6B
