From the Instrumental Music Department

I have been incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment and growth of students in Instrumental Music this term, and in fact this year.

We have had a busy term as students completed playing assessments earlier in the term, performed in several lunchtime concerts and gave a performance on parade last Friday to showcase our fantastic Concert Band after their successes at the Charters Towers Eisteddfod. There’s been plenty of music making!

Charters Towers Eisteddfod 2021: The RHSS Concert Band performed at the Charters Towers Eisteddfod achieving 1st place and walking away with the perpetual Rotary shield. Students including those who have only started learning their instruments this year also got out on the stage in solos and duets and were very successful in their performances with many receiving places. Congratulations to everyone who competed and a huge thanks to families for supporting their children in coming to watch, transporting, taking time off work to get students there etc. A big thank you also to the staff who assisted on the night- Ms McMahon, Miss Libby and Mr Hutchinson from CTSHS. Recruitment for 2022: The process is underway for recruitment in 2022. Students have been completing their ‘Selma’ audiation testing with the classroom music teacher, Ms McMahon. Students who achieve 65% or above will be invited to express their interest in joining IM next year. We will hold an information evening early next term to meet with prospec-tive parents and outline the IM program. Yours in music,

We have had a great Term 3 in regards to HPE and Sport. The term started with our Interschool Athletics Carnival with all our representatives performing incredibly well. At the end of the day we came away winning the Aggre-gate Shield for the most points overall and lots of students moved onto Red Track in Townsville later in the term.

This term also saw our Year 5 and 6 students competing in Interschool TeeBall. We played 2 games throughout the term on Friday afternoons (having to forfeit one game due to camp). Last Friday 10th September was our Interschool Gala Day. It was amazing to see the improvement in the skills and abilities of all our students with each game they played.

In Term 4, students in Prep along with those in Years 3-6 will be engaging in swimming lessons and pool safety. Notes were sent home earlier this week. Please return the permission/medical form and payment as soon as possible as the Swimming Program starts in Week 2 of Term 4.

Hello from Prep H Another term has drawn to an end. The Preppies (and their teachers) are all a little bit tired however we are still soldiering on. We are almost finished this term’s work so it is extremely

important to ensure that your child is at school everyday.

We have loved our information report unit in English this term. The children really enjoyed learning some interesting facts about insects. Please call into the classroom and check out their infor-mation report posters.

In Mathematics, the children have been learning about measure-ment. They have been investigating length, mass and capacity and have had fun exploring different ways of being able to meas-ure. Next term, we jump into a lot of number work and building on our knowledge of numbers to 20.

Thank you to parents who were able to attend Parent/Teacher interviews. I have enjoyed sharing your child’s progress with you. If parents were unable to attend, I sent out an academic and behaviour update on Monday 13th September.

We have had a really great term and are excited to see what Term Four has in store for us. Have a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks.

Term 3 in 1G has been a blast!

We had our emergency services day with the

paramedics and fire fighters, a classroom visit

from a bearded dragon and we even got to visit Billabong

Sanctuary in Townsville. We did lots of hands on learning.

What a fun term!

This term students have been learning the

Japanese language based around the topic

of the Tokyo Olympics. Students have com-

pleted medal tallies and learned new lan-

guage concepts about the various sports,

countries and competitors of the Tokyo

Olympic games, 2020.

It has been an engaging way to learn new

language and grammatical concepts.

We made it!! It has been a busy term with lots of exciting

learning happening. We went to Vir-

ginia Park as part of Design Technolo-

gy and baked bread. We also did lots

of hands on maths games and activi-

ties. Students are enjoying Maths ro-

tations on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Thank you to all who were able to vol-

unteer to help with different activities throughout the term.

Next term I will be on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks. The chil-

dren aren’t happy that I have “an extra long holiday!”

In Term 4, we will be learning about:

Maths: Money (counting notes and coins, and giving change), Frac-

tions (halves, thirds, quarters and fifths), Multiplication (continuing to

work on 0,1,2,3,5,10 facts)

English: Analysing fun poems and presenting a poem to the class

HASS: Geography—Australia’s neighbours and different climates

Science: Hot Stuff—Students explore sources of heat.

Digital Technologies - Students will explore digital systems and create

a simple guessing game using Scratch (visual programming language).

A HUGE thank you to Peter O’Keefe for letting us use the Indoor Sports Centre for our Term 3 Gotcha Party AND donating two prizes!

We had an amazing time playing indoor soccer, netball and a very quick game of modified volleyball. Miss Jessie was an awesome

goalkeeper. It was an interesting competition between Harvey and his Mum, but Harvey’s team was victorious in the end.

YEAR 4 NEWS What an amazing Term Three we have had!

In English we explored media art texts and wrote a feature article on the Charters Towers Dump. The students had amazing

ideas on how to fix the dump expansion problems and debated their opinions with their peers beautifully.

In Maths students became more confident in applying the split strategy to multiplication word problems and learned how

to complete short division for three and four digit numbers. They also completed measurement, tackled angles and blitzed

probability.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the engagement of hand, body and mind learning in Maths.

In Science this term we studied life cycles. The students have loved learning all about the life cycle of butterflies, echidnas

and turtles.

All students set goals at the beginning of term and worked exceptionally hard to reach them everyday.

The students in Year 4 have been following all expectations in the classroom well and have had an extremely

successful Term.

We’re looking forward to Term Four where we continue to watch them grow, learn and mature ready for Year Five.

Live Laugh Love Learn

Hello from 6L

Wow, what a busy but fantastic Term 3! 6L’s biggest high-

light this term has been Paluma Camp. High Ropes and ca-

noeing were a favourite and we also loved experiencing

the rainforest and camping in the clouds. We did a lot of

head learning, hand learning and heart learning. Enjoy

some photos from our great trip. Have a safe and happy

holidays. See you in Term 4.

Principal’s Article Happy Holidays

We hope all families in the Richie Hill School Community have an enjoyable and relaxing break with

your loved ones. Staff look forward to seeing all students next term when school resumes on Tuesday,

October 5th. Safe travel wherever you go.

Year 5 Paluma Camp

Last week the Year 5 students had the opportunity to attend the Year 5 Camp at Paluma. Everyone had

an amazing experience completing activities such as rainforest studies, team building activities, canoe-

ing, paddle boarding and raft building.

Swimming Lessons Begin

Swimming lessons begin the second week of school in Term 4 ( Tuesday, October 12th). Preps and

Year 3- 6 classes will be attending swimming lessons in Term 4. Please remember payment must be

made before your child can attend a lesson.

Teacher Transfers

Today the school was notified of the teachers transferring out of the school at the end of the year.

Teachers have requested that this not be shared with the Richie community at this time.

Transition to State High School for Year 6

Yesterday, Year 6 students across the 3 state schools in Charters Towers had the opportunity to get a

taste for what Year 7 at high school might be like. The feedback from students was very positive and

the Year 6 cohort will have the opportunity to participate in another transition to high school day next

term on November 3.

Prep Enrolments now being taken

2022 Prep enrolments are now being taken. If you have a Prep or know a family with a Prep student

who wishes to enrol at Richie for 2022, please contact the school.

Parent Teacher Interviews

We have this term had a great response for Parent/Teacher interviews with large numbers of interviews

occurring in every year level over the past 3 - 4 weeks. Thank you for supporting the school and your

child by attending these interviews. It is hoped you have gained a better understanding of how your

child is progressing and how you can work with the school to support your child’s progress.

Reading on the Holidays

Our reading data shows that nearly half of the students go back a level if they do not continue to prac-

tice reading over the holidays. It is really important that all students read every day for a minimum of 15

minutes. Parents your help is needed to make sure this happens. Thank you!

REMINDER– Richmond Hill State School is part of the Containers for

Change recycling program. Please send your containers for recycling

into the school. There is a recycling bin located in the stairwell near

the main office.

Students also participate in this program each day by placing their

recyclable containers in the boxes in each eating area.

MONSTER HAMPER RAFFLE We will be having the Monster Hamper Raffle and are asking families to send in donations to go towards this great prize. Tickets will be $1.00 each and will be available soon. This raffle will be packed for display in the large wooden sleigh and will be drawn at the Christmas Night Markets on Saturday 13th November. We will be having Free Dress Day on these Fridays leading up to the Christmas Night Markets

On these days students are encouraged to come to School in Free Dress. Students in Free Dress will need to bring along a donation to be used in the Hamper Raffle or on the Softdrink Quoits stall.

Donations required include: Non-perishable grocery items, 1.25ltr bottles of softdrink, wrapping paper, toys, cooking ingredients, cans of softdrinks. Anything at all that you would like to win in a hamper raffle. Plants will also be needed for the plant stall – These can be sent in the week of the Markets or on the day of the Markets.
