The Big Vegie Crunch hits LEPS

Before

After

At the start of the year, the school leaders got together with Mrs O’Connell to look at a few things we could actively promote for the benefit of the students at LEPS. Mrs Williams passed on some information about The Big Vegie Crunch and we decided to start with this. We found out that only about 5% of NSW school children eat enough vegetables so we decided that we could do our bit to lift the profile of vegetables in our school and hopefully encourage LEPS students to increase their daily vegetable intake. We’ve signed up to the Big Vegie Crunch. Principal’s Post

Dear Parents and Carers, You may have heard increasing numbers of reports online, in the news and on social media about an internet phenomenon called the ‘Momo challenge’. It allegedly involves children being challenged through popular social media (WhatsApp, YouTube, SnapChat, etc.) to carry out dangerous tasks, such as harming themselves or others. The game allegedly also may send disturbing images or threaten children with severe consequences if they do not follow Momo’s instructions. Despite the widespread recent coverage, there is some question whether the Momo “game” is real or an urban myth. Snopes.com, the internet site devoted to fact checking, as well as some social media experts are questioning whether the Momo challenge is real cyberbullying or a hoax. Whether or not Momo represents an actual threat, the rumours about it can be frightening for children. The internet poses risks, particularly for those who are vulnerable. This serves as an important reminder for parents to be aware of what their children are doing online, at all times. Parents and guardians should teach their children and teens to:

1. Be present as much as possible to see what your child is watching and playing. 2. Talk regularly with your child. Have frequent open and honest conversations with your child about screen time and encourage your child to feel confident about having discussions with you about issues and concerns they have related to the online world. 3. Get support from organisations that have expertise in this area https://kidshelpline.com.au/ 1800 55 1800, https://www.esafety.gov.au/.

As always, our staff are continuing to provide reassuring messages to students that caring adults are available to help them with their concerns. Mrs Nic Williams Principal

Improving Student Safety

To improve student safety we have had to change the time the school gates will be locked in the mornings. The Douglas Road gate and Daly Street walking gate will be locked at 8.55am when the bell rings. Any late students will have to walk around to the main entrance in Daly Street. Thank you for your understanding.

MCE Get Cooking Students of MCE have been cooking up a storm in the school kitchen with a variety of meals which

includes Meatloaf and Vegies, Macaroni Cheese, Spaghetti Bolognese, Gluten Free Pikelets and Gluten Free Cupcakes. YUM!!!

This Term in 3/4M This term 3/4M have been learning about summer and the effect of the sun on people and the earth. As part of this learning, we have viewed and analysed resources such as a Cancer Council advertisement and a sun safety song. Afterwards, we discussed the influence of such health messages on decisions we make. To finish off our learning, we planned and created sun safety posters to display at school. Here are some of our posters. Michelle Cary Classroom Teacher

‘Tell them from Me’ student feedback survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 9.8 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help im-prove how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typi-cally take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11 March and 12 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 15 March 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.
