Kitty lauded as ‘Pet Hero’

FILE PHOTOPekoe the blood donor faced his own health crisis earlier this year when he was diagnosed with lym-phoma and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. His cancer is currently in remission. His recovery is going well enough for him to consider returning to the show ring this summer.

By Jennifer LangTh e inspirational story of Pekoe the cat will

be featured in an upcoming episode of the television series, Pet Heroes.

Th e 14-year-old Cloverdale feline is notable because he’s a kitty blood donor. Until his re-cent retirement, he provided blood for cats needing life-saving surgery to patients at Cats at Home, his home base since being adopted by Jim and Dr. Susan Th ompson.

Th e prize-winning orange tabby is also a cancer survivor. Reporter readers learned about Pekoe’s health struggles a few months ago (“Donor kitty living on borrowed time,” March 18, 2011).

Pekoe does have a remarkable story to tell: he was rescued as a tiny, 12-week old kitten, suff ering from a blocked urethra requiring several surgeries and lengthy recoveries – all before the age of six months.

Pekoe was already nearing the end of his do-nor days this past January when vet Dr. Susan Th ompson found a tumour wrapped around his abdomen. since the Th ompsons set up the practice in 2000.

Pekoe has Type A blood, which makes him a good match for about 95 per cent of all domestic cats in North America.

Very infrequently – just a few times a year – he’s called upon to donate a small amount of blood (no more than 60 ml) when a feline patient has suff ered a violent trauma or is in an acute medial emergency.

When not saving lives, his main job has been to mingle with the other cats and their owners in the waiting room.

Th e Pet Heroes producers were hooked.“Once the decision was made, I was sur-

prised at how quickly it happened,” Jim said.Th ey fl ew out and interviewed Jim, Susan,

and the owner of a feline patient whose lifewas saved, thanks to Pekoe.

Th ey also took footage of Nicholas, thegrey shorthair with aquamarine eyes who’sreplaced Pekoe as the Cats at Home mascot.

Th ey stayed overnight in Cloverdale, thenwent to Telegraph Cove to cover the story ofanother pet hero: a dog who’s a seeing eyedog for another pooch who lost both eyes inan accident.

Pekoe’s role as a cancer survivor may beeven more heroic than his track record as ablood donor.

When they asked Susan what makes Pekoea pet hero, she responded, “We’re showingpeople that we’ve had a kitty that had adver-sity throughout his life and is still surviving, and we can show people that this is a kittythat’s had cancer and this is how he’s doing.”

Election in the air?Word that Kevin Falcon’s annual

“Beans ‘n Jeans” fundraiser is set for July 9 is helping fuel rumours of a B.C. election as early as September.

As in previous years, the MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale’s annual western-themed barbecue is hosted by Conser-vative Senator Gerry St. Germain at his Indian Springs Ranch in South Surrey.

A who’s who of Falcon’s Liberal cau-cus colleagues from the Fraser Val-ley and beyond are sure to be there, along with federal Tories, with crowds reaching upwards of 800.

Last week, reports surfaced that staff ers for both the B.C. NDP and the B.C. Liberals have been asked to fi nish vacations before mid-August,

typically a quiet time in government.Premier Christy Clark, who won

the Liberal leadership in February, has said she wants a mandate from the public, but has yet to indicate when

an election would be called.

Th e NDP has al-ready started getting candidates ready.

Last week, former B.C. NDP leader Car-ole James announced she plans to run again

in her Victoria seat.Falcon’s 2010 Beans ‘n Jeans event

was held in September.– Cloverdale Reporter

A: You are correct when you say a crooked smile can have a dramatic impact on her interaction with oth-ers; this is a known fact. It can also create diffi culty in proper brushing and fl ossing; can lead to tooth de-cay; abnormal wear on teeth/tooth mobility; tension in chewing muscles; clicking and popping in jaw joints; headaches and TMJ pain. Not to mention accumula-tion of plaque and calculus – which leads to gum dis-ease and eventually bone loss and lack of tooth sup-port... You are making the correct decision to help your daughter straighten her teeth. In recent years an alternative to metal braces called Invisalign has become popular with teenagers and adults. It helps patients of all ages feel confi dent in their smiles and themselves. The Invisalign system is actually a series of clear plastic virtually invisible aligner trays, which gradually move teeth to achieve a great smile and proper bite. By using a series of clear, removable aligners that are changed about every 2 – 3 weeks, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth towards the smile you’ve always wanted. The aligners are made of a hard clear plastic and are removable, allowing easy brushing and fl ossing for proper hygiene. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and cleanings become easier since the aligner trays are popped out for improved access – quicker, faster, more thorough visits. This is the single biggest advan-tage over metal braces because often accumulation of plaque and calculus around standard brackets can lead to decalcifi cation of surrounding teeth and ap-pearance of unsightly white decalcifi cation spots on

teeth. Another distinct advantage is that removable trays make an active lifestyle easier to accommodate. When you are playing sports or an instrument there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums.IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES? In the hands of a skilled prac-titioner and when worn according to doctors recom-mendation, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment.HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEAR-ING HIS OR HER ALIGNERS? Teen aligner trays come with built-in compliance indicators that estimate ap-proximate time your teen spends wearing the aligners. Indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time so you can easily monitor your child’s compliance.WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR ALIGNERS? Should this occur, tells the child’s Dentist right away. He or she may ask the pa-tient to start wearing their previous set of aligners and the Dentist will order a new set of replacement aligner trays. In our offi ce Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to 6 individual replacement aligners at no charge.HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST? The cost of Invisalign is usually slightly less than conventional braces because aligners require little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor so less time is spent at the doctors offi ce.Over 1 million patients are now smiling thanks to In-visalign. If you would like to book a FREE* Invisalign consultation in our offi ce please visit:

How to best straighten crooked teeth….By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Ask the Dentist

Q: My daughter is 16 years old with very crooked teeth. She is a beautiful, outgoing young lady but self-con-scious about her crooked smile. I am afraid if I don’t have her teeth straightened it could impact her self-confi -dence and the way others perceive her. I’ve heard there are new technologies to help straighten teeth without the need for metal braces. What exactly are my options?

We need to discuss the PatulloTo the editor;Th ere has been a great deal of concern over the

last six moths that there was to be a change in the Government (and TransLink) view on the solution to replacing or refurbishing of the 74 year old Pat-tullo Bridge connecting Surrey with New Westmin-ster.

In the fall of 2010, it was learned that the De-partment of Transportation had asked TransLink to review its plans for the crossing and investigate whether or not refurbishing the span would be a satisfactory alternative to building a new bridge.

For quite a long time now, it appeared that there was no alternative to replacement being consid-ered, and when the request came to light, there was considerable concern that a less than satisfactory conclusion would be decided ie; not to replace the bridge.

Subsequently, TransLink has announced that theonly viable solution would be to replace the bridge, however there is still some concern that they mayopt for a four lane span rather than the six lanestructure that many agree is the appropriate solu-tion to now and future needs.

Th ere is still some discussion as to how the bridgewould be paid for, so the Surrey Board of Trade canwait until an overall funding position for TransLinkis determined before taking a position on that.

Th e Surrey Board of Trade, as Surrey’s businessorganization endorses and supports the construc-tion of a new, six lane bridge to replace the oldspan.

Opinions

Canada: where our hearts are

In 1823 American dramatist John Howard Payne wrote, “Home Sweet Home”. Remember the stanza: “Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home”?

Arriving at the Vancouver Air-port International Terminal recently the “there’s no place like home” part crossed my mind.

“Humble” is neither an apt description of the stunning approach to Vancouver by air, nor the impressive artwork majestically greeting visitors.

Beside me travelers – obviously fi rst time visitors – commented: “Wow! Terrifi c!”, “Look at that those carvings!”, “Holy! Impressive!”

And, they were right.Th ough not Canadian born, I con-

fess to considerable pride striding along the platform over the water-fall feature, and descending (rather regally, I thought) down the esca-lator fl anked by statuesque totem poles and an outstanding collection of aboriginal carvings to be greeted by Bill Reid’s haunting bronze sculp-ture, Th e Spirit of Haida Gwaii.

In 1927, the late aviation icon Charles Lindbergh – unimpressed

with the Vancouver airport of the day – declined to include it in his North American tour. Well, Charles, it would top on your tour list today.

Sailing out of Lunenburg onboard Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador, Bluenose II, inspires similar senti-ments.

Wandering Pier 21 (the Museum of Canadian Immigration in Halifax), or a blustery day peering at the Atlantic from the craggy St. John’s, Newfoundland seafront has the same eff ect.

Surely, the young Duke and Duchess of Cam-bridge’s visit to Ottawa’s Capitol Hill on Canada Day and their delight (I have no doubt) when checking out Kate’s Cal-gary aviation connection

will bring a tear to eyes even younger than mine.

Closer to home, Surrey’s in-variably packed multicultural extravaganza at the Cloverdale Rodeo grounds will generate similar emotions.

From Canada’s shining sea to sea it will indeed be a “Happy Canada Day.”
