While designing the Twin Cam engine, the Motor Com-pany was faced with quite a few challenges, not the least of which was reducing emissions. When we think of emis-sions, we usually think of exhaust. While that is at the top of the list, noise emissions are a significant challenge to the engineering process. Ever increasing EPA restrictions on noise and exhaust emissions force manufacturers to rethink the design process.

Harley’s reason for going back to two cams (the two cam design was first introduced in the early 20’s) was simple. This allowed a reduction in the angle of the lifters and pushrods. The pre-Twin Cam engines had significant side loading of the lifters due to the angle of the pushrods, es-pecially the front cylinder exhaust lifter. It was not uncom-mon to have one or more of those lifters go south before

the 50,000 mile mark. The system to drive the new two cam set-up had to be differ-ent than the previous gear drives of the past in order to pass noise emissions. The answer was a “silent chain drive.” Picture 1 shows the set-up used from 1999 to 2005.

The first systems from model year 1999 to early 2000 had trouble with cam bearing failures. It was discovered that the rear cam bearing, which was a ball bearing, could not handle the radial tension or side forces. The fix was a replacement with a roller bearing. It was also discovered that the tensioner shoes were wearing out beyond service life as early as 30,000 miles. There was no consistency in the shoe longevity. Some would last over 60,000 miles while some were completely gone by 30,000. The problem then becomes a cost issue as most shops charge one half to a full hour of labor to inspect the shoes. Most shops will recommend inspection every 20,000 miles.

In 2006 HD redesigned the cam support plate, chains, shoes, and oil pump. This new design was implemented with the Dyna line only, and then in 2007 all Big Twin mod-els. The new shoes were now utilizing a hydraulic ten-

sioner, a much improved design over the spring tensioner it replaced. The chains were also changed to a roller style, which are less abrasive (see picture 2).

The good news for all you pre 06/07 folks is that there

are several options to retrofit the new hydraulic system to your bike. Andrews sells conversion cams that can be used

with the new plate and ten-sioners. Harley’s Screamin Eagle line has a complete kit which allows the use of the pre 2006 cams. This is a nice option if you want to continue to use your existing cams. Another option is the gear drive system offered by S&S (see picture 3). Although a bit more costly, there are no concerns with

wear. They can be a bit noisy. Depending on gear fitment, a whine or tick similar to worn lifters can be heard. Gears

should be measured to ensure the best fit possible. Pinion shaft run-out is a criteria with gear drives as well. Pay close attention to S&S’s instructions. If run-out exceeds specifications, the gear drive system can-not be used (see picture 4).

Deciding which system to use depends on performance requirements, cost, and even annual mileage. If you’re mostly interested in keeping your bike stock, and put very few miles on the odometer, why spend the cash? More radical set-ups would be bet-ter served with gear drives. Ask a reputable shop before spending that hard earned cash.

PINKERTONWell as any teacher would, we have a class pet. Our number one problem is kids and allergies to animals. So when I was at the Roanoke State Hog rally I picked up a pink HOG. They were selling them to raise money for a child. So I got one and he is my class pet. We named him Pinkerton, after a book that we love to read. Every Friday, Pinkerton goes home with a child to be cared for. They take pictures and add them to a photo album that we have inside our classroom. One child went to Germany on Christmas break to visit family and took my pig. He is a well loved, traveled and cared for pig. I told the kids that he was going to go with me on the Rolling Thun-der ride. They questioned how he was going to ride with out all the safety stuff so I worked it out. Now we have a Biker pig that these kids worship. They love him sooo much and love that he is a biker like their teacher is. I am recruiting a whole lot of bikers as the days go by. So I am sending you Pinkerton’s picture.

GOOD FOR YOUStrawberriesWhen looking for strawberry nutrition facts, you’ll find that nothing packs a big-ger nutritional punch than this little berry. Prized in ancient Rome for their medicinal uses, strawberries are rec-ognized as having more vitamin C than some citrus fruits. They are also high in fiber, folate, potassium and antioxidants, making them a natural means of reducing the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers. With only 55 calories per one cup serving, and containing 140% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C for children, it makes sense to add this fruit to your daily menus. The fact that strawberries are available year round, offers you the perfect opportunity to add great taste and nutri-tion to your everyday meals. Research shows that 94% of Americans currently consume strawberries and it is strongly suggested that eating them more often will add to a per-son’s overall long term health.

Apple’s 8th AnnualEast Coast Motorcycle Rally

Little Orleans, Western Maryland August 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th 2011 Apple’s 8th Annual East Coast Motorcycle Rally! Formerly known as East Coast Sturgis. This year is the year! You’ve heard of this Rally, you’ve talked about this Rally, well, this year you’ve got to experience this Rally. All the reasons are right. Great roads to ride. Great people to meet and the main reason motorcycle rallies started in the first place…you and your ride. Once a year, a sleepy little area, Little Orleans,( I’d call it a town, but it ain’t) in Eastern Allegheny County Maryland comes alive for a week with the constant rumble of motorcycles, laughter of partying bikers and steady words of praise of the excited locals, all 400 in our zip code. This Rally has really gained a reputation in it’s 7 previous years. All thanks to the bike riders that have made it. The mountains that surround it and the “Old Skool” feel of it! Whether you’re here for the party, the riding, the Motor-cycle Demolition derby or more, we have it, Check out our website eastcoastmotorcyclerally.com & reserve your tickets now! Thanks and ride safe, Apple(301) 478 3421

Two Texans were out on the range talking about their favorite sex po-sitions. One said, “I think I enjoy the rodeo position the best.” I don’t think I have ever heard of that one, said the other cowboy. “What is it?” Well, it’s where you get your wife down on all fours and you mount her from behind. Then you reach around and cup each one of her breasts in your hands and whisper in her ear, ‘Boy, these feel just like your sister’s.’ Then you try like hell to stay on for eight seconds.”

I recall my first time with a condom. I was 16. I went in to buy a packet of condoms at the pharmacy. In those days it took a lot of guts to go in a store and ask for that kind of item because everyone in town knew you, and there was no doubt the young lady behind the counter knew what they were for. She was working as an assistant behind the counter, and she could see that I was really embarrassed by the whole procedure. She handed me the package and asked if I knew how to wear one. I honestly answered, ‘No, not really.’ So she unwrapped the package, took one out and slipped it over her thumb. She cautioned me to make sure it was on tight and secure. I apparently still looked confused. So, she looked all around the store to see if it were empty. It was. ‘Just a minute,’ she said, and walked to the door and locked it. Taking my hand, she led me into the back room, unbuttoned her blouse and removed it. She unhooked her bra and laid it aside. ‘Do these excite you?’ She asked. Well, I was so dumb-struck that all I could do was stand there with my mouth open and nod my head. She then said it was time to slip the condom on. As I was slipping it on, she dropped her skirt, removed her panties and lay down on a desk. ‘Well, come on’, she said, ‘We don’t have much time.’ So I climbed on her. It was so wonderful that, unfortunately, I could no longer hold back and ZAPP!, I was done within a very few moments. She looked at me with a bit of a frown. ‘Did you put that condom on?’ she asked. I said, ‘sure did,’ and held up my thumb to show her. She then beat the crap out of me...Women have always been hard for me to figure out.

“Super B.” a good old southern gentleman in his later 70’s, was sitting at his local watering hole; The Stable”, when a really sexy woman in her late 30’s walked up to him and whispered, “hey good lookin’, let’s you and me run upstairs and make passionate love”. Super B. looks at her, smiles, and calmly replies, “well, darlin’, that’s a dang fine idea and I’m certainly game, but you’re just going to have to choose one or the other as there’s no way both those together are gonna’ happen.”

A congressman was seated next to a little girl on an airplane so he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.” The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?” “Oh, I don’t know,” said the congressman. “How about global warming, universal health care, or stimulus packages?” as he smiled smugly. “O.K.,” she said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?” The legislator, vis-ibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I seriously have no idea.” To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss global warming, universal health care, or the economy, when you literally don’t know shit?” And then she went back to reading her book.

An 86-year-old man goes for a physical. All of his test results come back normal. The doctor says, “Eddie everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?” Eddie replies, “God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eye-sight, so he’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, *poof* the light goes on. When I’m done, *poof* the light goes off.” “Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Eddie’s wife. “Marianne, he says, Eddie is doing fine but I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night and *poof * the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, *poof* the light goes off?” “OH MY GOD!” Marianne exclaims.“He’s peeing in the damn refrigerator again!”

Just got off the phone with a friend in Anchorage, Alaska. He said that since early this morning the snow has been falling heavily and it is nearly waist high. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing, and his wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window all morning. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

So this spoiled rotten preppie is pulled over by a hard-working, veteran cop for going 70 in a 30 m.p.h. suburb with kids playing in the yards, and as the cop walks up to the top down convertible BMW the kid says, “Do you have any idea whom my Father is?” and the veteran cop cooly replies, “what…your Mom never told you?”.

White Trash Repairs –White Trash Repairs is your one stop shop for some good ole, git r’ done ingenuity. See more of these ingenious ideas at www.whitetrashrepairs.com

Zip tie auto body repair. Ahhh another main item needed in every Bubba tool box, zip ties. Zip ties can be used like stitches for any auto repair.

Redneck dog waterer. The submitter wrote: “I used an old go cart wheel and a buffet tray to hold a water bottle. Works great!””

Locked Up. Well I hope when they bought this from the auto sales that it had a trunk lock at some time. I am totally digging the chain and lock set up we have here. At least they are secure! I’m thinking this deserves a C+, what do you think?

Little Bathroom Door Repair. OK smartie.. once you get the door open and step inside how do you shut it? Do you have to stand on the toilet or straddle it? Not to mention when the door is shut now you have one big peek hole right at who-ha level, total Fail!

Salad Bowl For Parts? The submitter wrote: “All the classic components of a Bubba repair. Do you think Mrs Bubba is going to miss her salad bowl?”

I Believe…That our background & circumstances may have influ-enced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

That no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

That just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.

That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

That you control your attitude or it controls you.

That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

That sometimes when I’m angry, that I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.

That life is more precious than money will ever be able to be.

Rumor had it there was a new place in Hampton Roads to get every-thing you need for your two-wheeled therapy. So we had to check it out.

The Biker’s Depot opened its doors in June of 2010. Virginia Beach native and co-owner Amy Graziano attended a charity ride in Long Is-land, NY in 2009 and returned to Virginia Beach with an idea and moti-vation. The trip proved that shopping for biker apparel and motorcycle accessories doesn’t have to leave you gasping for air at the sight of the bottom line on your receipt. She wanted to offer the same oppor-tunity to the riders in this area as she’d experienced up north. So Amy turned to the one person she knew could help make her vision a reality, her mother, Page Camp. The two got to work and started bringing what was now their vision to fruition. Their goal was to provide high qual-ity items at affordable, lower prices and give customers the superior customer service they deserve.

“After seeing the wide selection in New York City after a charity ride, it was evident to us that riders don’t have to break the bank to enjoy being on the road,” said co-owner Amy Graziano. “We wanted to bring more options to Virginia Beach, without the unnecessary price hikes or selling subpar items. Riding in the area is its own subculture, with a significant portion comprising of women. However, resources for the female enthusiasts in this area are extremely limited. We’ve changed that.”

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 30

Page 33: Thunder Roads Virginia Magazine - May 2011

After discussing the idea, finding the location, and con-tacting the participating vendors, Page and Amy got the business running in just under 60 days. “Basically, we just want to see people out riding, and we’ll do whatever we can to help them along the way,” said Page.

Page and Amy have created two ways to help you keep more money in your pocket: the Heroes’ Discount and the Ride Hard – Shop Free customer loyalty program. The Heroes’ Discount offers 10% off every item in the store for all active duty and retired military members AND public safety employees. The offer is even good on special order/non-stock items. The Ride Hard – Shop Free program is a no obligation, free customer loyalty program that rewards members with $15 in Biker’s Depot Bucks for every $100 you spend in the store.

Conveniently located in the Hilltop Shopping Center in Virginia beach, VA between Audio Connection and the new Jewish Mother, The Biker’s Depot combines friendly and knowledgeable customer service with recognizable name brands, such as: Wiley X Eyewear, Ridge Outdoors Foot-wear, Milwaukee Boots, Cruz Tools, NHJ Powersports, Frogg Toggs, Fulmer Helmets, Daytona Helmets, Sailor Jerry, S100, AceIT! Polish and Guardian Bells. They are also authorized dealers for large distributors like Mustang Seats, Tucker Rocky, FatBaggers, Inc., Kuryakyn, V-Twin and Cus-tom Chrome. As a result, both local residents and beach visitors can find the necessary part or accessory quickly and easily without overspending.

The Biker’s Depot will be celebrating their 1 year anniver-sary the weekend of July 9th and 10th – they’ll have lots of door prizes and specials. Be sure to check it out!

DEADLINE!

The preschoolers all answered “left.”When asked, “Why do you think the bus is traveling in the left direction?” They answered: “Because you can’t see the door.”

I RIDEKelly, I really enjoyed the “I Ride” article I read in you March issue of Thunder Roads Magazine. So much that I have to submit my sweetheart for a future issue! My fiancé’s name is Janet Marino. She is a systems tech for Veri-zon in Virginia Beach Va. She installs and repairs phone lines throughout South Hampton Roads. She has been working for Verizon for over 13 years and has worked in telecommunications for over 20 years. She is a hard working mother of two great daughters 17 and 19. Her youngest Daughter is a Junior in High School and an ac-complished Artist and her oldest daughter is a Freshman attending Duke University and made the Dean’s list her first semester! Janet rides a beautiful teal and birch white 2009 Road King Classic. She is an inspiration to her family, co-workers and to me and I would love to see her featured in your next “I Ride” article.

Sincerely, John Pasanen

News BytesCONGRESS ACTS TO REINFORCE BAN ON NHTSA LOBBYING May is Motorcycle Awareness Month across the country, and Congressional lawmakers are introducing a resolution on May 2 to continue current restrictions on NHTSA that prevent the federal transportation agency from lobbying state and local governments to enact helmet laws. The lobbying ban was originally amended into the Transpor-tation Equity Act in 1998, but U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and his House colleagues want to reinforce the prohibitions on NHTSA lobbying and focus the agency’s ef-forts on crash prevention and rider education. According to the resolution, the U.S. House of Representatives “supports efforts to retain the ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ability to lobby state legislators us-ing federal tax dollars, encourages continued growth in the motorcyclist community, and encourages owners and riders to be responsible road users.” The resolution, similar to a version Sensenbrenner introduced last session, goes on to say that the House “recognizes the importance of motor-cycle crash prevention as the primary source of motorcycle safety (and) encourages NHTSA to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education as the most significant priorities in motorcycle safety.”

“KIDS JUST WANT TO RIDE” COMPANION BILL IN-TRODUCED IN U.S. SENATE U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has introduced an amendment to exempt youth motorcycles and ATVs from the “lead law” that will effec-tively ban the sale of these machines. Senate Amendment 264 would exempt youth off highway vehicles from the overly-restrictive lead-content provisions of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, which has decimated the youth motorsports industry and will ban their sale at the end of the year unless the CPSIA language is changed. Meant to protect our children from imported toys with lead-based paint, the CPSIA prohibits the mak-ing, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under that contains more than a speci-fied amount of lead in any accessible part. The unintended consequences were that, because some parts such as brakes and battery components contain lead, dealerships were barred from selling motorcycles and ATVs intended for young riders, as well as replacement parts. The Klobuchar amendment is similar to H.R. 412, the Kids Just Want to Ride Act introduced in the House by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT), and would amend S. 493, the Small Business Inno-vation Research Reauthorization Act. You can contact your Congressional representatives through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to urge their support.

BIKERS PROTEST MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECK-POINTS Hundreds of motorcyclists from around Georgia rode to the Capitol to rev their engines in protest of a feder-al grant the Georgia State Patrol is using to conduct motor-cycle-only checkpoints. The crowd denounced the overly-invasive and discriminatory roadblocks as unconstitutional and chanted “No more profile stops” and “Education, not checkpoints!” The protest rally came two weeks after the

state patrol conducted motorcycle checkpoints on Inter-states 75 and 95 during Daytona Bike Week, during which troopers stopped motorcyclists at roadblocks to check for proper paperwork, approved helmet, and properly function-ing equipment. “The roadblocks are a violation of our rights and are a pure attempt at profiling,” said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. “Having a registration, proof of insurance and an endorsement on our license does make us safe. Loud pipes never killed anyone.” Georgia is the first state to conduct such checkpoints under a federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of a $350,000 pool of funds available to as many as five law enforcement agencies nationwide to test the effec-tiveness of a New York State Police pilot program. Several motorcycle organizations are urging riders to call on Gov-ernor Nathan Deal to cancel the remainder of the check-points, which will be scheduled over the next 20 months at undisclosed locations during unannounced times. Some in Congress have also questioned NHTSA’s grant and called for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to pull the plug on future funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints. Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), who recently co-sponsored legislation to prohibit such grants, called the checkpoints “outrageously intrusive.” Indeed, many of the protesters at the March 23rd rally held signs in support of US House Resolution 904 which would prevent the US DOT from providing funds to states which would be used for motorcycle roadblocks. In the meantime, motorcyclists are also awaiting a court ruling on the constitutionality of the New York checkpoints, being challenged by N.Y. Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitch Proner on behalf of his clients as well as representing the interests of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM).

MOTORCYCLISTS COME TOGETHER FOR JAPANThe 2011 Japan Earthquake and subsequent Tsunami last month has affected the motorcycle industry in a big way, especially since Japan is home to the “Big Four” motorcycle manufacturers: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. As the disaster relief efforts continue in Northeastern Japan, American motorcyclists are doing what they can to help those struggling through the cleanup and rebuilding, with U.S. motorcycle industry groups, racing series and even the American division of Japanese manufacturers raising funds in various fashions. Three U.S. powersports indus-try associations announced that they are joining forces to provide financial assistance to the relief efforts underway in Japan. The boards and members of the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America are collectively donating $10,000 to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund, and each organization is encouraging its members and individuals in the riding community to make their own contributions via a link on their websites (visit MIC.org, rockmoto.com, motor-cycles.org, MSF-USA.org, SVIA.org or atvsafety.org and click on the “2011 Japan Relief Fund” tab). All donations will go to experienced non-governmental disaster relief agen-cies in Japan that have a proven track record of emergency

News Byteshumanitarian relief and restoration work. To provide sup-port to those affected by Japan’s worst natural disaster; the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami that caused widespread devastation and crippled nuclear power plants, the presidents of all of the U.S.-based Kawa-saki entities are collecting donations from employees under their matching gift program and forwarding the contributions to the Red Cross. The Kawasaki Good Times Founda-tion is contributing $50,000 to initiate the charitable giving campaign. Even iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has reached out to the disaster zone with a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross aid effort in Japan, and has established a link on their website to the Red Cross (www.RedCross.org) to make it easier for em-ployees, customers and other riders to contribute.

EUROPEAN STUDY YIELDS INSIGHT INTO MOTOR-CYCLE ACCIDENTS European researchers discovered some interesting facts about the common causes of motor-cycle accidents. The Motorcycle Accidents In Depth Study (MAIDS) was based on 921 motorcycle accidents, which included 103 fatalities, across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. While some of the findings were expected, others were unanticipated. Not surprisingly, the study indicates that the motorcyclists most often collided with passenger vehicles. Surprisingly or not, 70% of pas-senger vehicle drivers involved in accidents with motor-cycles failed to perceive the motorcyclist. And while 73.1% of riders attempted some form of collision avoidance, 32% nonetheless experienced some form of loss of control dur-ing the maneuver. While all this may seem disheartening to riders, there are steps that can be taken to maximize safety; other findings from the study indicate: Over half of the ac-cidents occurred at intersections - Although 90% of those involved in crashes were wearing helmets, 9% of helmeted riders lost their helmets in crashes due to improper fit, fas-tening or damage - Younger riders -- those between 18 and 25 years of age -- crashed at a higher percentage and rid-ers aged 41 to 55 crashed less frequently - Riders wearing dark clothes were more likely to crash than others - Modi-fied conventional street motorcycles were over-represented in crashes in the study, but engine size did not appear to be a factor - Unlicensed bikers were more likely to crash than properly licensed bikers - Weather was deemed to be a fac-tor in only 7.5% of accidents.

VIRGINIA LAUNCHES “RIDER ALERT” CARDRichmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) and Bon Secours Virginia Health System, in partnership with Motorcycle Vir-ginia, Inc., have launched a new program designed to save the lives of injured motorcyclists. The program provides free identification data cards that will help first responders provide rapid and accurate medical assistance to riders involved in accidents. Motorcyclists who participate are provided a free Rider Alert card that contains their personal emergency contact and medical information in the event of a crash. The cards are kept inside the lining of riders’ hel-

mets and come with a 1-inch round sticker placed outside the helmet to alert emergency responders of the card. The sticker also warns bystanders not to remove the rider’s helmet, which could prevent further injury. RAA officials say the Rider Alert card program is the first of its kind in the United States, and said that they modeled their program on an initiative in Great Britain known as “CRASH Card”, de-veloped two years ago by that country’s Ambulance Motor-cycle Club. On a national level, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) was founded on a similar premise over 25 years ago by California attorney Richard M. Lester, issuing free Emergency Medical cards to bikers across the country that are linked to a database of their important medical informa-tion and emergency contact. A.I.M. has notified ambulance companies and first responders across the country to look for the yellow A.I.M. Card in a downed rider’s wallet. “We applaud Virginia’s Rider Alert program and appreciate their organizers’ level of commitment to implement such a life-saving project,” said Lester, whose A.I.M. program also networks with biker attorneys in every state to represent the interests of injured motorcyclists. “When a rider is down, they need all the help they can get as fast as they can get it.” More than three million A.I.M. Cards have been issued since 1985, and you can get yours free by calling (800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. Free “Do Not Remove This Helmet” stickers are also available.

WEIRD NEWS: HONDA WORKING ON MOTORCYCLE SEATBELTS Yes, you read it right…Honda is working on a system of seatbelts for motorcycles. Seems crazy, but it appears to be a serious project judging from the patents Honda has filed for the system, and images posted on BikersPost.com. According to the website, the belt arrange-ment is designed for larger touring bikes like the Gold Wing where the rider won’t be moving around much in the seat, and the belt can work with the airbag to more effectively reduce injuries. However, Honda apparently has recognized that in a lot of accidents it’s better to be away from the bike rather than attached to it, so their new seatbelt system also has elements of ejector seat: When the computer senses that the bike is irretrievably tipping over it releases the en-tire seat, with the rider still attached, and inflates an airbag backrest. “The idea is that having ejected you slide down the road in a sitting position, with the seat betwixt your hide and the asphalt. Sort of extreme tobogganing.” Of course, nobody envisioned airbags on a motorcycle either, before Honda’s R&D team put one on their Gold Wing as a factory option.

CHARITY EVENTS ADVERTISING ATTENTION EVENTS COORDINATORS

You Can afford to put an ad in our magazine for your char-ity or fundraising event! We offer very low rates for charity advertising – Thunder Roads would like to help in any way that we can which is why we offer these special rates. We are working very hard to move towards FREE ads for char-ity events but we need more businesses advertising with us in order to do that. Hopefully in the near future, as more biker friendly businesses run ads in our magazine, their support will allow us to help charity events more by offering even lower rates & even free advertising for them...this is something that we have wanted to do for a very long time. The more support we have from businesses that place ads with us, the more we can do to help others. Many events have their sponsors pitch in to cover the cost of advertising so it does not take away from other $ needed for the event. Please contact me to find out more about charity event advertising – [email protected]. Remem-ber that our deadlines to have ads in are the 15th of each month for the following month’s magazine, but we often extend it to allow for last minute ads. Plan ahead so we can get your ad in plenty of time before issues close up for the month. Event listings for the calendar online are FREE – we take the events submitted into the online calendar & add them into the print magazine each month. Submit your event on our site as soon as you have your info…it’s never too early! www.thunderroads-virginia.com

Happy Spring, Everybody! Ain’t it wonderful! Riding season is upon us! Make sure you get your bike blessed! I love the spring. It’s such a time for renewal, as Preacher Rick talked about in last month’s edition. Look around and you see spring happening, right in front of your eyes. But sometimes it’s not just the flowers and the trees, it’s within your self, inside and outside. We get so “comfortable” sometimes that we start accidently ignoring things in our life. Things that have always been there, we start taking them for granted and overlook how much these things mean to us.

Being in a “comfort zone” can be a good thing, but it also can be a very bad thing. Let’s say churches, for example. Some people sit in the same church their grandparents and great-grand parents sat, just because it is what they do on Sunday. If you ask them what the preacher talked about, they don’t know. This is happening all over the place. People go to a church that is not feeding them. Their spirit, their soul and their mind is starving. They come out knowing no more than when they went in. This is a sad place to be in! If you are in this place, get out! Find you a church that will keep you fed!

We all need to examine our lives and determine if we are in our “comfort zone”. Some “comfort zones” are alright, though. I am comfortably with my relationship with my husband and my family. I am comfortable in my career I chose. These things are alright.

But sometimes God stirs things up a bit. When you get really comfortable at where you’re at, God will take you into another “camp”. We are going through this in our church, right now. We have been in this location for a little over a year, and we have grown a little bit. We wanted to rent the empty place beside us and knock the wall down to expand. We had it all planned, right up to the decorating. All we had to do is to meet with the landlord and agree on a price.

That’s where the problem came. He wanted more than we could afford. “But, Lord, it would be so perfect. It is such a comfortable place.” BAM! That’s when it hit me. Church is kind of like boot camp. It’s a training school that you go through and then God releases you on the battle field. I believe God is taking our church out of it’s comfort zone to the war zone! We are looking at a location that is surrounded by drug activity, homeless, prostitution and all those things that most folks would run from. God wants us right smack dab in the middle!

And what is so amazing is the place we looked at last year is still available. A few people are a little concerned, but most of our congregation are as ready as I am. I think God is stepping us up to the next level. Now, we could stay where we are, in the comfortable place, that is to small, but how would we be blessed? Or would we? When God opens doors for you, you have to go through those doors, even if it means going out into the unknown.

He’s going to be right there beside you, all the way. And by following Him, you can’t go wrong! Please keep our church in your prayers as we go through this transition and we will be praying for you as you go through yours. Until next time...God loves you and so do I!

Last week The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration (NHTSA) held meetings in DC with stakeholders in motorcycle safety. While many things were discussed there were a few items of particular interest to motorcyclists. I’m sure that by now everyone has heard about the motorcycle only checkpoints that were done in Georgia the week of Daytona Bike Week. According to attendees at the meeting it was reported that these weren’t actual traffic stops but rather rolling checkpoints. Which is to say that most people didn’t stop, only slowed down through a closed truck weigh station to be observed by officers and then stopped if the police felt they had reason to inspect more closely. Things being observed were lighting, exhaust systems, valid tags and of course “non-compliant” helmets. $70,000.00 in federal grant money was spent on these stops and normally these grants require matching state funds bringing the total to $140,000.00. All this money and manpower and to date we have not had confirmation of a single ticket being issued. We have confirmed numerous warnings but no tickets. We will keep looking.

Besides the monumental waste of money and the intru-sion upon the citizens right to travel free from governmental interference, the manner in which these check points were operated raises some serious constitutional issues. As you know from the previous article that I wrote on this issue, one of the restrictions that the United States Supreme Court has placed upon checkpoints is that the officers operating the checkpoint must not have discretion as to who they stop.

What the????We’d like to thank Horse Head Huffer Pro-ductions for allowing us to share some of their crazy, funny & amazing photos each month from their websites: www.perfectlytimedphotos.com, www.funnyexam.com, www.motivational-generator.com, www.explainthisimage.com, www.spoiledphotos.com, www.passedoutphotos.com, www.parentfailure.com, www.adfailure.com

They must stop every vehicle or every third vehicle etc. They cannot have unfettered discretion as to who will be stopped. It appears that that particular rule was ignored in Georgia . We’ll keep you posted as we find out more about these and other similar stops around the country.

On another note, it appears that another issue being studied by NHTSA is license plate lighting and mounting. Apparently NHTSA is concerned about tags mounted on the side of bikes, tucked deep underneath luggage or sur-rounded by bright lights. I am not quite sure why this is an issue for NHTSA in that their focus is supposed to be high-way safety. I have yet to hear of a motorcycle accident that was caused by the manner in which the license plate of the motorcycle was mounted. At the end of the day this is not a safety issue. However, automated enforcement equip-ment such as red-light cameras are becoming increasingly popular with state legislators. Tags mounted on the side of a bike, tucked deep underneath luggage or surrounded by bright lights can make it difficult to issue automated tickets as the cameras can have a hard time getting a good picture of the tag. Once again, this does not seem like a safety is-sue so I question why NHTSA is involved. We will continue to watch this issue.

As always if you have any questions or comments on anything that is written here or any other matters of interest to motorcyclists please feel free to contact me. Matt Danielson McGrath & Danielson Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group 1-800-321-8968 Motorcyclelawgroup.com

Dried Basil2 Cups of Dark, Strong, Columbian Coffee1 Cup of Sweet Balsamic Vinegar (in any condiment aisle. Be sure and get sweet though, to counter-balance the slight bitter of coffee)Lay your meat on counter and let get room temp for like a half-hour prior to working with it. In a large-sized skillet electric skillet; circle the pan with quality olive oil but also add a table-spoon of quality margarine. In a small bowl mix up your garlic powder, chili powder and basil. Rub both sides of your meat really well, work it in. Place ribs in medium-high heated skillet and braise both sides till golden brown. Salt & pepper to taste while braising. Remove to a side plate; lower temp. to medium-low, add 2 cups of dark, strong, Columbian coffee and 1 cup of sweet Balsamic vinegar to same skillet, use wooden spoon and scrape up any tidbits from bottom of pan. Let reduce down for about 3 minutes. Place your short ribs in a crock-pot evenly on the bottom and any others crosswise on top. Pour your reduc-tion over all ribs, lift up ones on top to make sure liquid gets up under them. Cook in covered crock-pot for apprx. 3-1/2 hours, then remove lid and let go until totally fork tender. Place ribs on a serving platter and pour that phenomenally tasting sauce all over each and every rib. OMG! if these don’t make you want to lick the plate, nothing will.

Recently, I ran across, Eric Banks of Game Over Built. I told him that I was interested in expanding our magazine by add-ing some awesome sport bikes, but needed the bikes and connections to do so. Fortunately, Eric jumped at the opportu-nity to help us out. Check out the cool story that goes along with this good looking ride! Terri “T” Collier, TRM Oklahoma

The owner, Matthew Williams, brought me his ‘06 gsxr 750 that had been wrecked on the left side, to simply repair the damage, lower and stretch it. Within days, the game plan changed to a full custom bike that would be flashy, yet simple and clean. Eric said that he started off by ripping the bike completely down, powder coating the frame, swing arm bars and just about everything else including nuts and bolts. With the plastics replaced it was taken to LL Cool Spray for the custom kandy rootbeer paint with heavy metalflakes. It also got a molded windscreen and shaved undertail.

Once back from paint, the 240 wide tire swing arm and custom billet wheels were installed along with a wide array of other after-market parts. To finish the paint off, it went to Cole Stevens where he ghost pin-striped the frame and swing arm and striped the game over built logo on the swingarm. Seats-by-Tommy also hooked us up with one of his custom seats. This really tied it all together. Eric stresses to our readers how quick and easy any bike can become a showpiece. Of this build he commented, “It’s crazy to think this bike was dropped off for minor work and it turned into a full blown build.”

This story is dedicated to all of you backyard builders who’d prefer to turn a wrench vs. slide a credit card….to those who ride their bikes to events and shows and not just trailer in tro-phies that won’t ever see pavement….to those who appreci-ate skill and hard work and not who’s wallet is fatter.

Mike Bradley aka “Dawg”, is a junk man by pedigree as his father was before him. He’s been building customized cars and bikes all his life and I simply felt compelled to share his talents and story with the readers of Thunder Roads.

A few months back, he envisioned a build that would be-come a personal challenge for him to complete in less than “30 days”. Considering that he was starting with literally “nothing”, many of his critics were skeptic. “Dawg” disap-peared for nearly a month and when I started getting cell photos of his progress, I was amazed….

“Dawg’s” so called “Barter Bike” was quickly taking shape. I guess being in the junk business does have its perks. He initially traded a 2001 Chevy truck bed for the custom wheels and tires, a jet ski for the frame, a 1993 mustang for the motor/trans & tins and finally, he sold a rigid bike frame for a few bucks to complete the build. Needless to say, the final product

is a head turner that is nothing short of beautiful. To have personally designed, built and painted this bike in

30 days is incredible…even for a country boy from Suffolk, VA.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the roadway. Motor-cycle Safety Awareness Month is a national initiative aimed at getting motorists and motorcyclists to “share the road” with each other.

Share the Road with Motorcycles Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the roadway. All motorists are reminded to safely “share the road” with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists.

Drunk Riding Prevention Alcohol affects those skills essential to riding a motorcy-cle - balance and coordination. So it plays a particularly big role in motorcycle fatalities. Statistics show that the percentage of intoxicated mo-torcycle riders in fatal crashes is greater than the percentage of intoxicated drivers on our roads. This is why NHTSA urges all motorcycle riders to always ride smart and sober.

Impaired Motorcycle Operation - Riders Helping Riders (Final Report)

Riders Helping Riders (RHR) is an instructional program designed to encour-age motor-cyclists to intervene to prevent drinking and riding by their motorcyclist peers. The program is based on focus group research which found that riders consider themselves to be united by an interest in rid-ing, and willing to help other riders in need, but that a sense of individualism limits the extent to which riders are willing to intervene in drinking and riding.

RHR is intended to convince motorcyclists that an im-paired rider needs their help, and that they are in the best position to provide help. The program provides a “toolkit” of techniques for separating drinking from riding, discourag-ing riders from becoming impaired, recognizing impairment, and discouraging impaired riders from riding. An optional role-playing module is included. At the end of class, stu-dents are asked to sign a pledge to do their best to help an impaired rider live to ride another day.

RHR was developed with the assistance of instructors from the South Carolina Rider Education Program and pilot tested by instructors of Georgia’s Department of Driver Services, Motorcycle Safety Program.
