Founded in 1990, and located in Cork City, Backwater Artists Group is the largest purpose built artists studios in the region, currently catering for 39 artists. MELANCHOLIA by JILL CHRISTINE MILLER [VISUAL ART] Garter Lane Gallery FOH space Runs until 31 October / FREE Jill’s work examines an autobiographical understanding of depression and the emotional reactions inherent to these states of consciousness. Jill has recently completed residencies in Ireland, Iceland and Norway and held her first solo exhibition in Dublin. Her work further develops the sense of paint as flesh and incorporates human emotion into physical visual representation. GEMS - HIGHLIGHTS OF WHAT ART COLLECTION [VISUAL ART] University Hospital Waterford Runs until 4 November / FREE This exhibition showcases some of the favourites of the WHAT art collection which comprises over 560 original artworks and inhabits every nook and cranny of University Hospital Waterford. OTTERAN’S HOSPITAL [VISUAL ART] University Hospital Waterford Runs until 23 October / FREE An exhibition of original artworks by 15 mental health service users based on personal experiences and memories of St. Otteran’s Psychiatric Hospital, Waterford. The works were developed with artist Jill Bouchier through Iontas, WHAT’s arts and mental health programme. Tour of the exhibition: Monday 5 October at 1.30pm starting in UHW foyer / FREE. FRAGMENTATION AND FLUCTUATIONS OF THE MIND [VISUAL ART] Index Gallery, Central Library Runs Mon 5 to Sat 17 October / FREE In this exhibition of paintings, the artist, Melia Maddock has created compositions with abstract forms that convey a mood. The forms are purposely represented as being fragmented and are a metaphor of our fragmented lives or state of mind. These compositions all allude metaphorically to our attempt to make sense of our joys, fears, and sadness; to find equilibrium or wellness in our life and in ourselves.
