Vines If you have limited horizontal space for plant material, choose something that grows vertically. Vines are the perfect vertical plants that will grow up against a fence, a wall, a trellis or on an arbor. Let’s take a look at annual and perennial, deciduous and evergreen vines that do well in north central Texas.

President’s Message Have you looked outside?! (Silly question!! You are gardeners!) It seems that in the last day or two the trees have dressed themselves in gorgeous autumn colors. It gives me a catch in my throat that has nothing to do with the head cold I brought home from Peru and the Amazon River Basin. (It was a wonderful trip, by the way, and if anyone has a week to spare, we will set up our slides for you to enjoy!! Ray Chancellor took thousands!) Last month in my President’s Message I addressed migration. With dwindling food supplies to our north, birds must adapt, migrate or die. The migrants who arrive in our area are exhausted, hungry and must compete with our year-round residents to survive. This month will address how we can enhance our backyard environments to make them a haven for these visitors. Don’t forget that birds need water! First, check out the list developed at our April 23rd GGC Forum, “Augmenting bird feeders with native plants…” http://grapevinegardenclub.org/learning. I will highlight the first suggestion in the Additional Information: Don't trim spent flowers (deadhead) until January. Leave for birds. Right now, though, as hungry migrants arrive, we need to make sure our bird feeders contain what they need. Most backyard visitors fall into two categories: suet or seed eaters. Birds who eat suet are often those who eat insects when insects are active in our yards. Virtually all winter birds will utilize suet at some point—as a high energy food. As you shop for suet feeders, look for those that may contain perches at the bottom for smaller insect eaters. Seed eaters fall into several categories: the larger species enjoy larger seeds, such as sunflower seeds. Be sure to shop for black oil sunflower seeds. Although they are a bit more expensive, they include nutrients the less expensive varieties do not have. Our most abundant winter birds (goldfinches and pine siskins) need thistle seed. (Niger is the kind we look for.) Feeders themselves come in a huge variety of sizes. The majority of birds are ground feeders. All you need to do is to throw a handful of mixed birdseed on the ground or patio. The mixture needs to contain mostly millet and as little milo as possible. Looking at our calendar of GGC events, it looks busy but wonderful! Don’t forget to register for our Holiday Luncheon on December 10th at the Lancaster Theatre in downtown Grapevine. We have a true musical treat in store for us! Our program for the general November meeting brings back a long-time friend to gardeners in north central Texas—Steve Huddleston, Senior Horticulturalist at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.

Before and after this meeting, you will have a chance to shop for homemade gifts at our Craft Bazaar as well as to purchase a copy of Steve’s book, Easy Gardens for North Central Texas—a “must have” for every gardener who lives among us. Lots to look forward to! See you soon.

Our Spookie West Texas Street Workday

Tuesday, October 29th

We thought it was going to be a horrible day to work outside, but it was just yucky. It was in the 40’s, cloudy

and sometimes it was misty, but we are a tough group! We weeded, planted pansies and spread mulch. No, we

didn’t have to water everything in because about 2:00 the bottom fell out of the clouds and all was good. Ten of

us went up to Jakes and had lunch and hot coffee. Hip hip hooray. All in all we decided it really wasn’t that bad

and that it could have been a whole lot worse.

I want to shout out a very big Thank You to Peggy Harris for giving us a great talk about how to take care of our

iris, and this is the time of year to do it. In spite of the nasty weather, we broke up into 2 smaller groups, found

out the important steps to take, and just how to do it.

Thanks, Peggy!

The Committee appreciated all that were able to make it to the work day: Peggy Harris, Susan Boelens, Linda Bloodworth (Peggy’s sister), Debbie Boyle, Angelia Ozymy, Susan Sporl, Greg Braak, Pam Braak, Babs Sidorowitcz, LaJune McCrea, Beverly Gill, Terry Curcio, Kris Botterman, Candace Kyler, Sheri Jones and Robin Pond. A special thanks to Bruce Herndon and Joe Krimm for taking the time to work to remove a very sad looking Abelia shrub, clear out the big flowerbed and plant two new Edward Goucher Abelias. Their extra effort was greatly appreciated. Photo:

Gardeners on the Go To get in the Christmas spirit, Gardeners on the Go will be visiting Blooming Colors Nursery in Grapevine on Wednes-day, December 4th. While there, we will each create a large Christmas spray of live greenery to hang on our wall or front door. Blooming Colors will provide everything needed to bind the spray together and ribbons and pinecones for decora-tion. The cost is $15. We will also be given a 20% discount on any purchase we make that day.

Because this workshop is so popular, Blooming Colors has agreed to have two workshops . One will be from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., the other will be from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Before or after the class, we will go to Café Italia in Grapevine for lunch.

If you have any questions, pleases contact me. (Page A-43 of the yearbook)

Butterfly Flutterby Again Exceeds Expectations!

Butterfly Flutterby was a fun and educational event for GGC members, families, friends, grandparents and the community. A big THANK YOU goes to the 80+ Garden Club members who volunteered over 700 hours. The number of members and volunteer hour is an outstanding example of how well our Club comes together to participate in this wonderful community event.

And we want to especially thank Trace Worthy, Luke Wolford and the other Grapevine Convention and Visitor Bureau and Park and Recreation staff for their help and support.

The Club sponsored a sales booth with educational materials, flowers, caterpillars, bug eyes and other fun items to buy. We also sponsored an Art Contest, Passport Table, Science and Plant Table, made lots of wonderful crafts, checked in volunteers and served as Festival Ambassadors.

Overall the BFFB was a huge success for everyone.
